Title: September 2 Stream of Conciousness
Post by: 847badgerfan on September 02, 2017, 11:43:21 AM
Here we go.

Just got back from the Kenosha farmer's market. Got some eggplant, squashes, zucchini, tomatoes, lemons and feta. That's gonna be a nice dish to go along with the clams and mussels later. Got some nice bread too, for dipping. Mmmm.

On to watch some football now. Gonna be a good I day I reckon.

Why does Florida State refer to itself as a university?

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/01/sports/ncaafootball/florida-state-football.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fncaafootball&action=click&contentCollection=ncaafootball&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=3&pgtype=sectionfront

Long read, but in interesting to know that football players need extra help in on online class on beverages. WTF..

I'm at a fancy-pants Chik-fil-A.  Think I'll make some crazy nachos and/or spaghetti for the game today.

Encouraging performance by MSU since the second quarter. Offense looks improved, secondary was shaky at first but settling. LBs have been very good. DL hasn't done much, OL not dominating but been solid.

Yes it is.
Rutgers gave Washington a scare, held them to something like 70 pass yards, 20 rushing yards, 0/5 3rd downs, and 9 min t.o.p. in the first half.  They hurt themselves too with a pick, missed FG, and a  punt that was supposed to go out of bounds being returned for a TD which let UW take a 10-7 halftime lead.  Washington finally woke up in the 2nd half, but this was B1G #14 vs PAC #1.
Now Maryland is looking good vs Texas, granted UT may have a helmet ranking.

I caught at least one of each species, which is always a goal.  I slayed the Lake Trout and Northern Pike, the later of which is a guarantee where we fish.   Great new techniques for the trout. Had to grind for the Muskie and crappie. Bass and walleye were easy to find.

Speight has air mailed everything. Yes it hit the hands, but it was an athletic play just to get his hands on the ball. Speight hasn't looked great. Even the td pass was poor. It took forever to get there and black was wide open.

all Speight has is the deep ball. His accuracy still kinda sucks. He's high or behind on most of his throws.

UF-UM is basically a 3-3 game.  Neither team a fan of the refs.  At least neither targeting call got anyone booted.  Ugh.

If Harbaugh is smart, UM will run the ball 2/3 of the time in the 2nd half.  The only depth UF has on defense is at DE.  The Gators might as well go all Texas Tech the rest of the way, because we're not even getting back to the LOS on running plays.

Michigan looks pretty damn good to me. That defensive front is filthy. Excellent stable of RBs. WRs look damn good and will only get better.

They have physically controlled this game from the start.  Florida is no slouch on defense and Michigan moves on them pretty well.

That tilt in Happy Valley at night will loom large me thinks.

O'Korn sucks. That's why.
Have to think RS Frosh Peters or true Frosh McCaffrey would be better options. Honestly.

Ya know when Crawford hooked around a db and floated outside there were a whole shitload of bodies between the 2.Seriously from his angle he didn't have a clear view.Spreight did a good job calling an audible and M just seals the victory

FSU missing Cook something fierce. He made that OL look better with his ability as a runner and he was a complete mismatch in the pass game.

Patrick looks slow as dirt and the 5* Frosh Cam Akers looks lost. He was a HS QB if I recall correctly. Never even played RB in his high school career.

FSU defense looks fantastic. Bad special teams basically gifted Alabama two free td's.

But you should see the Purdue Message boards.  Even after a loss, this is the most excited the fan base has been in 4+ years.  The fan base knows there is something different about this coach and his staff.
I think that is a testament to how low the program had gotten, where Purdue was in a game until the end vs a ranked opponent can generate this much excitement.

If a certain qb is marched out all season, there will be many that lose faith that the guru is still a guru at that position. First few years get a pass, year 3 should see some drastic improvement. Last night did not give any hope to that.

From the sounds of a lot of posts in this thread, it seems that the QB guru in Ann Arbor needs to start doing some guru or whispering or something.
he's doing the best he can with what he has.

Think it's pretty apparent that he's a QB guru- just based on what he did with Rudock and just based on the mere fact that he can make Wilton Speight a serviceable QB at times. Speight's dog-shit plays and horribly accuracy and foot-work rear their ugly head from time to time- but he's the best Harbaugh has got right now.

John O'Korn just doesn't have it up-stairs and he literally has zero pocket presence. Brandon Peters is a RS Frosh still a year away from being ready to play- and Dylan McCaffrey is a true frosh beanpole at 6'5, 190- he'd get broken in half right now if he took a big shot to the chin- he needs a redshirt bc physically he just is not ready.

Harbaugh is doing the best with what he has at QB at the moment. Cannot re-iterate just how bare that QB cupboard Hoke/Borges/Nussmeier left that QB cupboard. That takes time to fix when your best talents at that position are freshman. I'd almost sell my soul to the devil for a year of Jake Rudock right now- and he was the definition of mediocre- but he's not going to lose you games like that dipshit Speight will. That's all they need- mediocre, reliable QB play that won't give the ball to the other team and shoot his own team in the foot. Harbaugh should have sold out and went all in to get Stidham to transfer from Baylor. That kid starting at Michigan this year- they are legit playoff contending team.

FSU QB Francois out for the year. Ouch. That's a huge blow for FSU. The back-up is a true freshman and Francois was pretty much their entire offense with Dalvin Cook gone to the NFL. I really like their WR's and that TE of theirs but that OL didn't look that much better from the horrible FSU OL of 2016 and RB Jacques Patrick doesn't look like the kind of back that can carry an offense like Cook. Not even in remotely the same universe. 5* frosh Cam Akers might be that kind of back one day- but he didn't look like he was ready for prime time. Which honestly is asking A LOT of an 18 yr old true freshman to come in and be the savior game 1 against Alabama.

FSU offense is going to REALLY struggle without Francois and until Akers gets in his groove and figures it out that offense will be completely doomed because Patrick just ain't it and that OL is mediocre. They need an explosive big-play back like Cook who can make people miss and make things that aren't there happen because that OL ain't good. Gonna be even worse with a true frosh playing QB now.

FSU has an elite defense which will keep them in every game, but sooner or late that defense will break just because the offense will be so bad and their special teams were B-A-D against BAMA and their entire offense is in the tubes with Francois out for the year.

FSU needed Akers to come on-line and be the real deal sooner than later, significant improvement from it's OL, AND a healthy Francois to make the playoff. OL didn't look leaps and bounds better and Francois is out for the year. Have to think their playoff hopes are ruined.

I'll go with the game played in a home venue.
Looks like a bad choice.

FSU QB Francois out for the year. Ouch. That's a huge blow for FSU.
According to Bamaonline:
Alabama outside linebackers Christian Miller and Terrell Lewis are expected to miss the rest of the 2017 season, BamaOnLine has learned. AL.com's Matt Zenitz was first to report.

Miller, a redshirt junior, was listed as the team's starting Sam linebacker on the Tide's preseason depth chart. Lewis, a sophomore, was expected to make a significant contribution.

Evidently there was some hitting going on

So does the old standard apply that Paul Johnson's attack is easily shut down by those with more than a week to prepare?

In attendance at the WVU-VaTech game last night. Always impressed with how well Tech fans show up for their neutral site games. First half was mostly defense until the offenses got carried away in the second half. WVU's QB had a Favre type game, slinging it all over the place while making plays with his feet and holding up threw some big hits. The Mountaineers defense though cost them the game down the stretch, as they couldn't match the momentum of the offense. WVU lost but they'll be fine once Big 12 play rolls around. Not so sure about Tech given their harder schedule that picks up quick.

Not when Butch Jones is the coach preparing.

703 yards in a 77-20 win over Southern Utah on Saturday night. That included 52 rushes for 348 yards.

so they probably didn't throw it over the top 68 times

tell ya what I'd take that Tech QB right about now. Kid grew up in Ann Arbor and his pops coached at Michigan for 20 years. Shame he didn't wind up a Wolverine.

Caught the replay on the final drive Purdue can hold their heads up.L'ville isn't an easy out and the Boilers gave them a scrum.Didn't see the contest however Boilers going to contiue with 2 QB's?
Not sure what Purdue is doing at the QB position. Blough was injured in camp (shoulder), so there is speculation that Sindelar started to try to keep Blough fresh. But then when Sindelar struggled, Blough came in, so he was clearly "OK enough" to play. He looked good, too. The offense really started moving with him. But after 2 picks, Sindelar came back in for Blough and looked a lot more sharp as well.
So... We'll see? Probably have to wait for some of the quotes from the coaching staff through the week to understand why they made the rotation they made.

As stunning as it was to watch UCLA's comeback, it really shouldn't have been.  This has been Aggie's m.o. for most of Sumlin's tenure.  Get out to a big lead then completely implode in 4th quarters.  This has happened to them a lot more than just last night.  I don't know if it's conditioning, mental, or what, but they are the current kings of failing to close games out.

Sumlin is a drunk. coaches sober first half, goes into the locker-room at half, has a couple then rest is history.

I wouldn't put much stock into the Ducks stomping the Thunderbirds.

They are an FCS bottom feeder.

So does the old standard apply that Paul Johnson's attack is easily shut down by those with more than a week to prepare?
Easily shut down remains a silly overstatement.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Tennessee stand tall though. Vols should have more talent, facing a team replacing a top QB and its top two fullbacks.

Well Auburn shut out GA Southern, who runs the triple option (Johnson's old job).  GT has better players, but yeah, you'd rather have them in the opener than the 2nd game.

Alabama assistant coach (formerly on the Maryland coaching staff) Mike Locksley's son killed apparently from gunshot wounds.

Terrible :(

GA Tech up 14-7 on #25 Tennessee at the half

btw, why anyone (ranked or otherwise) would voluntarily schedule a game against an option team is mind-boggling

- seems like a nightmare to defend

- takes patience and discipline, which most football players (who are aggressive by nature) don't have

Case in point was NU's annihilation at the hands of Nebraska in the 2000 Alamo Bowl, 66-17

- granted, we had no choice in the matter but damn ... what a crappy "reward" for co-winning the conference  ???

You'd have thought Hazel was still running things.
Not quite. I'd like to think Brohm at least has reasons for playing both QBs. But of course that remains to be seen...

There's never a reason for that

tell ya what I'd take that Tech QB right about now. Kid grew up in Ann Arbor and his pops coached at Michigan for 20 years. Shame he didn't wind up a Wolverine.

GY triple option looks a little loose this far, even when it works.  Funny, I've seen it look better when not working.

Tennessee escapes with the win

Man, if Tennessee played Tech without that magical extra time to prepare, the Jackets might've had 1,000 yards.

rtf4 says it's that time of the year when TAMU pretends they are a top 5 team for the first 5 weeks.
guess they decided to go ahead and get the collapse out of the way in the first 4... quarters.

Oh boy.

Who does the regent think will come there?

According to Bamaonline:
Alabama outside linebackers Christian Miller and Terrell Lewis are expected to miss the rest of the 2017 season, BamaOnLine has learned. AL.com's Matt Zenitz was first to report.

Miller, a redshirt junior, was listed as the team's starting Sam linebacker on the Tide's preseason depth chart. Lewis, a sophomore, was expected to make a significant contribution.

Evidently there was some hitting going on

bama had 5 lb's get hurt. 2 out for season, 2 out for 2-4 weeks, and 1 is day to day. good news for bama is lb is loaded, even by bama standards.
some major hitting going on.

This is going to sound like sour grapes but hopefully I've built enough equity on here that people will know it isn't.  Jackson played well but the jury should still be out on him.

Almost every big pass play Tech hit came off a blown assignment or an overreaction to a PA fake or pump and go off a bubble screen look or something like that.  WVU gambles and guesses a lot and when it works it looks good. When it doesn't you have receivers running 10-15 yards behind the nearest defender.  Even the nice runs he made were off fakes in the zone read game where big lanes opened up.

He was poised and didn't make any major mistakes. He played well but while Grier was going through read progressions and throwing darts into tight windows Jackson was throwing lollipops to his primary reads who were wide open due to play design, blown assignments, or both.  Jackson might end up being a great college QB but he didn't need to be great to make the plays available to him Sunday night.

bama had 5 lb's get hurt. 2 out for season, 2 out for 2-4 weeks, and 1 is day to day. good news for bama is lb is loaded, even by bama standards.
some major hitting going on.
I saw that, but the FSU QB's injury hogged up all the headlines Sunday morning.  Clemson can cement itself as the ACC favorite if it beats Auburn at home this weekend.
And yes, Bama should be fine.  The defense looks as strong as ever (you can place a team full of All Americans on offense - heck, maybe even mix in some NFL journeymen in there - and they still won't be able to run the ball on the Bama front 7).  Florida State did put up much more of a fight than the final score would indicate, as they kept the Bama O in check, but you just can't give them short field after short field after short field and expect the D to hold each and every time).
And FWIW, Damien Harris is Bama's best back.  Bo S. is good, but he's not Derrick Henry.

thank you! said this last year and all off season as well. we have a 1000 yard back returning, and it isn't bo.
and had fsu not turned ball over and flubbed in sp teams, that game could have gone either way. not sure what they do without francios, but with him they are a top 5 team.

At Bama the players come off an assembly line.

Injuries are not relevant with regards to their title hopes.

Yes, the FSU offensive miscues ultimately did them in, but I also think the Bama D and special teams deserve at least a little credit for that.  FSU was fortunate to have the athletes to prevent Francois' picks turn into pick-sixes, but Francois was clearly rattled in the second half and in hindsight should have been pulled after the second INT.  The Noles also did a fabulous job on defense all things considered - outside of D. Harris' one big 35 yarder, they kept Bama from running wild and limited Hurts to 96 yards passing on the night.

Bama seems to have certain vulnerabilities though (they can be thrown on, and the jury is still out on Hurts), but I still have a hard time finding a potential "L" on the schedule.  Maybe if A&M ever figures out that football is meant to be played 60 minutes instead of 45, or possibly the Iron Bowl, but I doubt it.  I think Clemson waxes AU in Death Valley.

A&M doesn't even come close to having the lines to beat Alabama.

They didn't when they had JFF, either.  But to be fair, JFF was the only reason why A&M was competitive with Bama when they first joined the SEC.

They had JFF and Aggie still needed multiple fluky plays to win that game, just like one of Ole Miss' recent wins.  Stuff happens.  They tend to go 7-1 in conference for whatever reasons.  Lightning could strike for A&M, but it's just that.  Not something you should look on paper and think "Hmm, they could win this game."

How many wins at the expense of Bama would you consider "fluky" since 2010 or so?  Both Auburn's Iron Bowl wins seem to be 'fluky'. Oklahoma lucked out because they played a very disinterested Bama in the '14 Sugar Bowl.  Bama was one last stop from beating Clemson last year.

The only game that comes to mind where Bama really got beat straight-up was, funnily enough, at the hands of Ohio State in the '15 Sugar Bowl.  No, it wasn't "ownage" (and I use that term lightly, because if Bama really wanted to be there, the final score likely would have been reversed in favor of Bama) like the previous year's Sugar Bowl, but Ohio State did not need luck to beat Bama that time.

Ole Miss beat Bama a few years back with 5 turnovers to zero.

Georgia almost beat them in 2012 I think it was in the CG off a blocked FG returned for a TD.

One things that stands out with FSU is 27 rushing attempts for 40 yards rushing.  When you hold the opposition to that sort of figure, which is what Bama does, you are likely to win.  I know that includes some negative yardage.

Bama's very simple mantra is "Stop the run and play a clean game on special teams with fewer TOs.".

On occasion, some brilliant performance by a QB can beat them (Manziel, and Clemson's QB).  In recent history, the only team I saw line up and beat them mano a mano was Ohio State.  That was an impressive win, no fluke.

If Bama really wanted to be there? In the playoffs? Where else would they rather have been?

Three off the top of my head.  One of the Ole Miss games with a ridiculous amount of crazy turnovers, the aforementioned A&M game, and the 2013 Auburn game...largely well played by Auburn, but I'm forced to admit winning on a kick-6 is crazy and not likely to be repeated in 10 tries.  Oklahoma and the rest of them in that time span, you just have to give credit to the other teams.  It's erroneous to guess at Alabama's interest level against the Sooners, I have no way of knowing, and I give Bama's players and coaching staff more credit than that.  OU played on fire that night, just like Watson and Clemson did, I think they just get due credit.  Ole Miss mostly just played a better game the other time they beat them, it happens.  LSU won because up until 2-3 years ago, LSU's roster = their roster, albeit with serious deficiencies at QB, but those aren't flukes, it's just a great roster accustomed to operating a game plan hiding terrible QB play.  That's all the teams I can think of to beat them in that time frame.
The comment about Ohio State is baffling.  It was the playoffs, and the first year of the playoffs at that.  I can't imagine Alabama wanting to be anywhere else.

pretty much this.
fluke things happen in games you dominate too. doesn't mean you didn't play a very good game and deserve the win.

Sorry for the confusion - I was referring to Bama not being mentally in the game in the 2014 Sugar Bowl vs. Oklahoma.

"Old School" football, stop the run, run the ball, dominate the clock, wear out the other team, special teams pluses.

On occasion, somebody will beat you passing the ball.  On rare occasion, someone lines up and simply knock you off the line and runs the ball anyway.

It ain't some mystery, but it's hard to do at Bama's level with consistency.

Any one who beats them is either just as deep and talented or has a QB who has an insane game or gets a 5-0 TO margin.

None of those things happen very often.  OSU is really the only program I see that recruits at the same level as Bama.

Georgia isn't far off.  It's second only to Bama as far as 4+ star recruits go in the SEC.  I think it's safe to assume that if UGA and Bama swapped players, Saban would still win big (not necessarily natties every other season, but at least SEC championships and playoff berths)

On paper, UGA should win the east.  And it really shouldn't be close.  They have more players than other SEC sans the Gumps.  That part of my brain really wants to pick them, but UGA is the king of disappointing my high expectations of them.  I'm very trigger-shy about picking them.

But on paper, yeah, I think your SEC CG participant picks have to Bama vs. UGA this year.

My too early conference rankings after week 1:

2.  ACC
3.  a)  SEC
     b)  PAC 12
5.  Big 12

four B1G teams in the top 10?

That's not sustainable

as silly as having four or five SEC teams in the top 10 a few years ago

The Dawgs need to prove they can do better than "doing less with more".  They often did this under Dooley back in the day, but when they started accumulating talent, they would suddenly tank a game they should have won, against Florida or Tennessee or South Carolina, or all three.  The have not always been the most talented team in the SEC East of course, but I'd say more often than not they were.  They are the "anti-Wisconsin" program.

I think a good bit of this is weakness in the OLine.  A team derives a lot of consistency from OL play and conditioning.  It enables you nearly always to crush lesser teams and compete with teams even more talented than you overall.

Georgia barely edged Nicholls last year in Game Two, and the OL looked awful.  That presaged a mediocre year at best.
