Title: It’s still off-season - Fashion!

Kilts - I’d wear one if it were a light cottony one.  I wouldn’t be caught dead in scratchy wool.

One of my favorite authors wears a kilt in public: Alexander McCall Smith.  We saw him give a reading to a packed house (n=2500) at the Schnitz in Portland, and he started off by saying "I'm amazed at how many of you came here tonight to hear thoughts from a man wearing a dress" and then he howled in laughter and we howled with him.  What is it about some people with the true gift of making you laugh, and really just by occupying the same space with them?

Okay, my fashion question is much more mundane, but I'd like some sandal recommendations.  The ones I have tend to make my feet sweat a bit, and after wearing them awhile they get a bit, I dunno, sticky or something.  And, don't worry, I'm not one of those guys who tends sweat so much that I walk outside and get instant sweat rings or something.  You wouldn't know that I was sweating to look at me.  But my feet get a bit sticky.  Just a bit.  Is this just part of the sandal lifestyle?

Of course I guess I could go back to those days when I would just go barefoot all summer.  By August my feet were so tough I could cross a hot Oklahoma asphalt road, a wide one even, barefoot, and not even need to run.  Maybe walk a bit faster, but that's it.  Them dogs was tough, I tell ya!  And, I don't remember sweat ever being an issue for my feet when I went barefoot as a kid.  Of course Mom would send me straight to the tub and make me soak every night to clean up my act, but I'd do my best to undo all her fuss over that every day.  Gawd summers as a kid were just plain wonderful weren't they?

Twenty five years ago when my father was in his 70s he began wearing leather sandals with white cotton crew socks.   He looked absolutely atrocious but happy.  In fact during one of those gender sequestering moments when womenfolk chat huskily in the the kitchen while menfolk meditatively sit on the backporch and make idle conversation while scratching the ears of faithful dogs my dad told me he had never been happier.  It was like he had attained a higher level of consciousness and enlightenment.  The last 15 years or so of his life were bliss.

About ten years ago I was in socks and had to run out to close carwindows as a freak summer rain rolled in so unthinkingly I slipped my sandals over my socks before runn8ng to the cars.

The sensation was amazing.  Almost like the smell of fresh baked cookies, words of encouragement in a time of need and slow BJ all in one.

But alas I’m not mature enough to take the plunge.  I still imagine there are beautiful young women in this world who have yet to make love to me, who would love to make love to me, and will surely make love to me someday unless they see me wearing socks with sandals.

I imagine I will lose my sons’ secret, unspoken respect if they see me in socks and sandals.

I worry I will lose all motivation to work and strive and provide and achieve if I begin wearing socks with sandals.

But sometimes when I’m home alone I wear socks with sandals and it’s heavenly.  I even take pictures of my feet and send them to a pervert I know.

Someday I’ll cross over into true enlightenment and begin wearing them boldly all the time but for now I’m just a padawan in the game of life.

Heh!  Pasty yankee.  Thank you for sharing.  It’s things like that that make us Texans feel genetically superior and divinely enriched.

Why do styles have to change?

Over the last year or so I’ve bought several new suits of the slim fit variety and while they look great and I get compliments and generally feel fine they are just so tight around the johnson area. I’m not sure I like that.

I’ll be glad when we can get back to the baggie 90s hiphop style,

Mine are Eccos.  I've had them awhile as you can see, but they're still in good shape.  They hold the feet well, never cause any blisters or foot pain in the arch etc.  My only complaint is that sweat thing that builds up under the balls of the feet after wearing them for awhile.  Hmmm, yeah, I guess they make my balls sweat ...

(https://thumb.ibb.co/ks9Jkp/IMG_0054.jpg) (https://ibb.co/ks9Jkp)

And, HH, heh, yeah the sock dilemma.  I've worn them a few times, but only inside the house, well out of sight of the general public.  Turns out Portland has a surfeit of people who wear socks with sandals, totally belying their general hip image (or maybe part of their tragically hip image).  Something to do with the persistent 45 F cool weather that happens there from about Nov to March, and even spring fall and shoulders of the summer it might only get up to 65 F on a given day.  Perfect weather for sandals with socks, at least in their mind.  But I didn't go there, and now PDX is in my rear view so the threat of gradually succumbing to sandals with socks with advancing age or creeping tragic hiptitude is off.  Or at least so I think now ...

Question and a comment:

Are cargo shorts not cool?  I have a couple pair that I love, I think they look nice and they look nice on me.  I gather from my nieces and other youth that cargo shorts are the new jorts.....i.e., only do this if you intend to embarrass your nieces.  When did this happen?  And I don't care.  I like my cargo shorts.

I used to love sandals when I could wear them, but not ones with straps like the ones Fred posted.  I think those look a little better than than the thong sandals I wore, but a major reason why I wore sandals was for complete laziness and ease.  Just put my foot in them, slip my foot out.  The sum action required to move between a state of being shoeless and shoed.  Straps were too much work for me and I'd just have soon worn my sneakers, which don't look as cool as sandals but were hardly any more work and provided a greater level of comfort and versatility.  You don't want to be asked to go jogging spur of the moment by a beautiful college girl in San Marcos and be wearing sandals.  Unless they're thong sandals and they're so easy to take off and on that the benefits outweigh the consequences.

In which case you just say "Ok, I can't go jogging with you right this instant, but tell you what.  I'll do a raincheck and jog with you later if you'll let me take you out right now to anywhere you want to go.  That's right.  Because unlike the 'roided out college losers who are more interested in looking at themselves in the mirror at the gym than in looking at you who you're used to dealing with, I'm in my later 20's and I have a job and my own place."  Then you just find a way to further explain how those other losers are only thinking about one thing, how they can get her to please themselves.  Whereas I on the other hand, being a little older and wiser and just generally of better substance than the average goon, understand that relationships on any level are a give and take, and I like to focus on ways to make her happy.

So, another question:  There's nothing better to make a woman knock herself out trying to please you than by hinting to her that all you really want is to please her.  Did you all find that to be the case, or is that just me?

I seem to have severely digressed.  Back to the fashion thread.

Your neices are correct. Cargo shorts are no longer cool.  Much like a cold front this hit different parts of the country at different times.  I first heard murmurings that America’s affection for cargo shorts had played out in 2009 at which time I was assured that had been the case in the more avante gard parts of the country as early as late 2006/ early 2007. By 2015 all of America had received the news.
That said I still keep a couple of pair for when I go fishing, hiking or kayaking.  There’s a quality of manly indifference with a Jeep, hiking boots, a fishing pole or kayak covers the cargo shorts with a plausible purpose that transcends fashion.
Here again, I despise the fashion of today because the newer tighter shorts cut into my swing.  When you live a good 20 years or so in baggie pants and cargo shorts, your johnson comes to expect a little elbow room.  Then fashion changes and he feels choked. Mark my words fewer babies will be born over the next 20 years because balls can’t breathe and produce semen.
And I don’t know how I would’ve raised kids without wearing cargo shorts.  Without them big ass pockets, I would’ve had to carry a diaper bag.
But so it goes. Unless we reach the age of enlightenment and just don’t care we’re all slaves to the good thoughts of others.
Think we’re not?  Then ask yourself if you would drive a minivan and why not?
Economy, roominess, sliding doors and more AC vents, power outlets and drink holders than you can shake a stick at.  It’s the most practical and affordable vehicle ever built but just like cargo pants the 14 year old Caitlyns and Mikaylas have declared it SO uncool.
As for pleasing women to make them happy.... I caution you, young Amos my friend, to never ever think you’ve discovered any possible solution to figuring out women.  Their natures are too unpredictable.

I'm not sure of the definition of cargo shorts

do they need to have a certain number of pockets?

I've seen references regarding golf and the frowning on cargo shorts on the course.

I won't buy a pair of shorts that does not have a pocket for my cell phone

If golfers want to look down on me, so be it.

My feet are poorly designed. They're mostly size 10, and to say they're a "B" width is generous. There's also the notion of the monstrously high arch. I own athletic type sandals (the velcro strap kind) for outdoor water/sand trips, but not for long term wear.

I've discovered I like "Sanuk" sidewalk surfer (https://www.sanuk.com/mens-sidewalk-surfers/) shoes. They're the right mix of casual and functional. Plus, I can stick orthotics in them. I like linen pants, and they look good with them.

I'm on a mountain bike a lot, and cargo shorts still work well with them. Usually, it's when I'm wearing a floppy, button down rayon shirt, so the shorts are the least of my fashion worries.

Pocketed pants don't bother me. I do a fair turn as a theater tech (audio, lighting, stage), so I've got lots of Dickie's style pants with a ton of pockets (mostly black). During a run, the pockets are crammed with an alarming amount of oddball stuff.

As a long time wearer of cargo shorts I too was caught off guard with the news they are now uncool (the new jorts is a very apt description) but as someone who never was all that cool to begin with I continue to wear my cargo shorts. I mean, my girlfriend still sleeps with me so how bad can they be?

I never been a sandal wearer but most of my adult life in Texas and Arizona if the weather is over 55ish and sunny I'm wearing shorts and flip flops and a t-shirt 90% of the time when I leave the house for anything other than work or the rare times I go somewhere "formal".

Speaking of work. While I've always considered myself a desert rat who never minded the sweltering summers here too much I will say having to wear steel toed work boot with thick jeans (and being outside a decent chunk of time I'm working) has made me tolerate these summers a lot less than I used to. I mean I still love it here and will likely never move, but still.

The cargo shorts issue is kinda funny.
I think us women are jealous of all the pockets on them, since our pockets are either non-existent or so tiny they won't even hold a wallet.

The husband-type wears his cargo shorts and I don't really care either way.  If he's NOT wearing them, he's more likely to hand me his crap to put in my purse, so I would almost rather him look uncool in cargo shorts and carry his own stuff.     I could always buy him a fanny pack, since it appears those are making a come back these days, but even those seem less cool than cargo shorts to me.

Well, I mean, what else am I supposed to be wearing?  I should note here that I don't much care about pockets and I've rarely used them.  Cargo shorts to me were more about the fit and cut of the things rather than the utility.  CH is right, once the meat and potatoes get used to having room to breathe, they don't take kindly to claustrophobic conditions.  I could just as happily wear shorts without any pockets, but when I go to the store the shorts they're selling look like something made for twig-legged wusses who don't plan on actually moving.  Plus the colors are atrocious.  It's all pastels.  And may I just say, HELL.  NO.

Also I can only assume that the guys who wear those things have small penises.  I don't say that as an attack on their manhood, but rather as a statement of fact about their anatomy given the crotchal restriction they've confined themselves to.

I hate flip flops.  I don't like anything between my toes, bugs the crap out of me.

I wear sandals when canoeing or camping around water, and about the only ones I've ever found that have the required utility and comfort are Tevas.

Otherwise I'm wearing shoes of one kind or another.

I hated flip flops growing up and never wore them.  It wasn't having something between my toes, it was that my normal gait took my feet right out of the things.  I felt like I had to unnaturally clench my toes and feet somehow to keep the things on.  One day in 2005 I got 3rd degree burns on my feet from the sun from being out on the Guadalupe too long.*  I couldn't stand socks or my Nike's for a long while after that.  Bought my first pair of flip flops and after I wore them for about a week, whatever different motion was required to wear them easily became second nature and I never had to think about it again.  By the time the burn healed into a tan I had become enthralled with the sheer ease of putting on and taking off my shoes.  No tying, no staps, no buckles....I was hooked.  I wore flip flops anytime I could until I developed foot problems such that they're no longer an option.

*Yes, I had on sunscreen, but the river washed it off of my feet because they were in the water enough to wash off the stuff, but apparently out of it enough that I caught way more sun than I realized at the time.  My skin passed red and had gone to a weird incandescent blue.  My co-workers were horrified.  It'd make you swear that if you put me in a dark closet, the tops of my feet would've provided a small amount of light, but they didn't really glow, they just looked like it.  Until the doc told me, I had no idea 3rd degree burns were possible from sunlight.  I thought the marks would never go away.  I had that tan line well past the time I left Texas.  It did eventually all vanish tho, about 8 years later.  I'm surprised I didn't immediate cancer and have to amputate.

You know, I've heard that observation a lot from my female friends and it always makes me think that creating a line of women's clothing with ample pockets would be a great niche market opportunity.
Problem of course is you need a sufficient capital base and a sense for women's fashion, and even after 26 years of marriage in a family run by Latinas, I have absolutely no sense of womens clothing, and am thus forever hopeless in that regard.  The only thing I know for sure is that I need to check every purchase of my own clothing with "the authorities" back home (because there's no way I'll buy anything for her "unchaperoned" except maybe a scarf, and even that's a nerve wracking prospect), and thanks to the iPhone camera, this is easy to do.  The iPhone has saved me a ton of return trips to the store, and I'm forever grateful to Steve Jobs and co for that.
And, my 2 cents on the fanny pack.  It's a hell of a thing, givin' a man a fanny pack. Take away all the masculinity he's got, and all the masculinity he's ever gonna have.

I'm neutral on cargo pants.  I wear them when I'm doing some home repair project.  They're perfect for that.  But I really don't wear them out much, unless it's a hot day and I'm going to Home Depot or something.

Actually I don't wear shorts much at all.  See above comment about being married into a family run by Latinas.  It's a cultural thing.  Guys don't often wear shorts in Argentina (and probably in most of L.Am. but I can only vouch for Arg), unless they're engaged in a sports activity or are at the beach etc. So, I just wear loose pants, and avoid living in hot climates, and yeah, I do play a lot of sports.

But minivans, no way in hell - lol.

I will say the husband-type wears soccer shorts much more often than cargo shorts.  And he refuses to wear flip flops, even on the beach.  No sandals, either, he's all tennis shoes all day, even if it's 100 degrees.   Or he would be barefoot, I can't get the guy to wear shoes in our own yard, even when he comes in with splinters on his feet asking me to get them out with my tweezers.    This is when flip flops are very useful, but noooooo, he would rather risk splinters and hot pavement with his bare feet rather than slip on some flip flops.   I don't think it has anything to do with the between-the-toes thing, because he even has the regular sliders that don't go between the toes, but he's just stubborn about proper footwear.

Yes, we need more women's wear with decent pockets.  Can you believe they even give us FAKE pockets?  Like they will make perfectly good pants for work, but the "pockets" on the back are sewn shut and all for show with no real use.     I'm guessing the clothing industry is in cahoots with the purse industry for convincing us why we need these 3-gallon handbags that cost $500 and maybe that's why this pocket-epidemic is occurring.

A collusion with the purse industry??  Ah, yes, I love that idea, and it makes sense.  Hmm, I guess if we tried to start a cottage industry to make womens clothing with multo pockets that we might find ourselves at the bottom of some harbor with concrete purses chained to our bodies?  Or maybe they would fill all those extra pockets with quikrete to make sure the message was clear for all.
In defense of your husband, maybe he spent his youth like me running around barefoot in the summers and so it's just an attempt to reclaim those carefree days?  Illogical moves (as seen by others) are sometimes founded on childhood memory stuff like that ... or of course sometimes we're just illogical for no reason at all!

I wear shorts when I'm doing something athletic. Otherwise, I've discovered the fun of linen pants. They're not as hot as jeans, and not as stuffy as dress pants.
They're like wearing pajama pants to a dress up function, but since they haven't caught on yet as a trend, I can get away with it and just look like I'm ahead of the style curve. Since most guys my age are wearing the waistband of their pants around their top-thigh/lower buttock region, no one really focuses on my beach wear.

My SUV drives as well as any pickup, and tows better.  Of course it's not a crossover, it's a full-sized half-ton Tahoe Z71 4x4.  It's  superior for towing boats since it has more weight over the rear wheels, and it's superior for towing RVs on long roadtrips because it has more air conditioned interior storage space for family, pets, etc.

So you can take your comment, and shove it up your corn-fed arse.

I can buy that.  I love the feel of grass on my bare feet, but I hardly ever go outside without shoes because my folks always told me I'd get worms if I went barefoot.
Which, I mean, IS a thing around here, but man has it got to be uncommon with the amount of barefootedness I've always seen out of these hilljacks.

Maybe all the hilljacks have foot-worms?  How would you know?  You ever check out their feet?

As a kid I never wore shoes either.  As I've gotten older, my poor beat-up old feet require I wear them.

Man ya'll are a bunch of minivan hating, tender foot baking faux macho men, ain't y'all?

When my ninos were small, the missus and I acquired a series of minivans because they were voluminous but much less costly to acquire and fuel than SUVs.  Back then to get a third row (outside of the minivan field) you pretty much had to get a Suburban which cost as much as a small farm and got GPMs instead of MPGs.

So we had a 1998 Plymouth Voyager.  From 1996 to 2000, the Voyager and its sisters (the Dodge Caravan and the Chrysler T&C) were the least boxy, most teardroppy minivans ever built.  And they were ubiquitous.  Everybody had one.

Then in 2005 we traded it off for a 2004 Pontiac Montana.  Now the Montana was a jewel.  It was so smooth, comfortable and quiet.  Had the quad bucket seats and built in DVD player.  I loved that minivan.  We'd probably still have it if some dang fool hadn't rearended us and their insurance company declared it a total loss.

So after much fighting that even required us to get a lawyer and file a claim, we finally settled and got a 2006 Saturn Relay.  It was a lot like the Montana but it just wasn't the Montana.  It was like the dog that you regrettably buy right after your beloved 15 year old dog dies.

Plymouth, Pontiac and Saturn.  Were we the kiss of death for American marquees or what?

Along about the time our oldest had cars of their own and my i s c & a w wasn't having to transport a car load anymore we traded the Relay in on a 2013 Jeep Patriot.  Now it's about time to give the youngest the Patriot and move up to acquire a Grand Cherokee or Durango or Explorer so we can pull a small travel trailer.

But often times when I travel for business , if a handful of us are having to travel, I'll rent a Dodge Caravan.  It's good stewrdship.  I got read the riot act the time I rented an Expedition so I stick with Caravans to save $10 a day and to avoid confrontations.

I love to get somebody else to drive, crawl back to the third row, pull down the shade, plug in all my devices, fold down the middle bucket to use as an ottoman and kick back.  I'll have my big drink next to me and about three vents blowing hard at me.  It's really pretty nice.   It's not a bad experience.

The worst part is that so many people are moving to Texas, Enterprise doesn't have any vehicles with Texas plates anymore so you have to drive around looking like you're some rube from Wisconsin or Arkansas.

I really don't cornsider myself to be a macho man, but I ain't drinking diet coke, light beer, and Zima, or driving a minivan, and certainly not wearing flip-flops, which back in my day were referred to as thongs!

of course, we didn't have the thongs of today back in the 70s.  We referred to those as wedgies or snuggies.

If y'all think that thing between yer toes feels weird or awkward, it would seem minor compared to having something between your cheeks.

I'm not gonna wear thong underwear myself that's for sure.

But if my i s c & a aggie wife chooses to do so, well, who am I to stop her?

that's their decision

I drink Diet Coke.  And I do consider myself to be a macho man.  So something's gotta give.

Well as for me, I’m very secure in my manhood so I have no need to drive truck, wear boots, belch or posture.  So I metro.  I drive economical vehicles, I eat salads, I work out, I dress fashionably, I color the gray in my hair and smear collagen under my eyes at night. I even carry a briefcase just so my car keys and wallet won’t bulge my skinny slacks. So yeah I guess I do posture after all.  I pretend to be a guy 15 years younger than I am.  And if I’m not actually pulling it off, folks are nice enough to play along.

I do, however, have a fashion dilemma.

I grew up to believe one wears brown shoes and belt with browns and tans and black shoes and belt with blues and grays.

But now I can afford all kinds of shoes including colors like gray, blue (really more of a navy) and saddle.

Saddle as you probably know is a light brown that’s an almost orangy leather.

Personally I think the saddle shoes and belt look bad ass with my very light gray (not dark gray or charcoal) two piece suit and most people under 30 tend to agree while most people 40 and over consider it a faux paux.

Those vocal opinions leave me torn. What thinks ye, oh college football chums?

The saddle shoes are probably fine with the light gray.     I highly doubt anyone will turn you in to "What Not To Wear" in either case, if that show is even still on anymore.

When I was a kid, my mom would say my pants looked like "high waters" if the pant leg didn't go all the way to the ankle/shoes.
Nowadays, all the pants look like "high waters" since they are all cut above the ankle, and it's the latest style.
It really is hard to keep up with the shifting taste, styles & trends, and half the crap that is pushed in the fashion magazines are ridiculous trends anyway.
At one point, denim top with denim bottoms was a no-go, but now I'm seeing the double-denim look everywhere.

Ah the old double denim or Canadian Tuxedo as one of ninos told me it’s called.  I’ve always been a fan provided the colors contrast - faded jeans with a much bluer and less faded shirt.

I loved it in about 1991 when Boys II Men took denim to the urban mainstream with their Motown Philly video.

One of my favorite outfits was in about 1992 when I’d wear a pressed dark blue denim shirt with olive colored pleated Dockers and a wild slim knot wide at the bottom Jerr Garcia tie to tie them both together.

Great look.

I miss denim.

Charley,

Your fashion sense has always been top notch when I've met you in Texas at various locations.  (usually Bonedaddy's)

you never come across as any of the 5 metro-sexual men in Erin's pic above

I'm thankful of that.  Not that there's anything wrong with that or the way they dress.  Just definitely not my style

Yes, the saddle shoes are bad ass.  I'm planning to purchase a pair soon.  I usually reference them as bowling shoes when I notice them looking good.

Thank you for your kind words, Frankie.

But I should point out.... when I say saddle shoes I don’t mean the snazzy two tones Wally’s girlfriends wore with his letter sweater on Leave it to Beaver.

I mean a solid one color loafer the color of Matt Dillon’s saddle.

Primo, I don't have much fashion sense so can't comment other than to say it sounds kind of "Palm Springs" to me, not in the sense of old geezers playing golf etc, but am thinking more of the actual physical landscape out there, which is pretty light colored with a lot of sand and rocks etc.  You might be able to blend into the landscape kind of like a chameleon.

You could always say that you're tracking in on the Arizona Buff Bench Boulder look (and beyond the buff bench boulders look also at the gray of the Navajo Boulders or the Smokey White Ice Boulders ... these sound like the color scheme you're putting together):

https://www.southwestboulder.com/products/arizona-buff-bench-boulders

Anyway if it feels and looks good to you, go for it, I say!

I can't find the exact shoe.

It's a Florsheim driving loafer, like this:

But orangy tan like last one I posted.

I like em.

Last pair of loafers I had was back in college in the early 80s

since I'm not big on spending money on shoes, I have a dilemma.  Do I get the saddle/bowling shoe or the loafer?  Both classics.

Loafers

Only time I tie laces is if I'm hiking or shooting hoops.

I like rubber flat soled loafers made of leather so soft it's wrinkly.

Like Baloo told Mogli when they were floating down the river, "Man, that's living!"

Since I'm a person for economy of movement, particularly when it comes to arranging clothing, etc, I'd opt for the loafer.  No shoelace action.

Actually the shoes I wear to work are lace-up black Eccos:

https://us.shop.ecco.com/holton-apron-toe-tie-621114.html?dwvar_621114_color=01001

But I often treat them like loafers, sliding them on and off without tying or untying the laces.  The good thing about Eccos is that the soles are really resilient, including dealing with the constant Portland rain and wet streets.  They last forever.  I should probably check into their loafers though ...

All you non-shoelace people are my kinda people.  Y'all get it.  Life is too short to spend tying and untying shoes.

Unfortunately I can't handle much else besides sneakers (tennis shoes, whatever they're called) these days, and even that only with orthotics.

Even if my shoe has shoelaces, I still just slip them on and off.  Except for my actual running shoes, those I lace up each time but you know, since I'm exercising, I'm okay with that.

I need some new golf shoes

I wish it was still off season, at least for the conversation.  There’s nothing wrong with rivalry smack talk, I suppose, but it’s just not as fascinating overall.

I mean where else can we talk about men’s fashion (thanks to JCG’s brilliance) with semi-straight faces and it actually be interesting?  Seriously this was a good thread.

Just thought I’d speak up for it one time before we plunge into full on moping, gloating and hating ...

I figured we needed to prime the pump after the long offseason.
I must admit I’m impressed by your shoes.
So the other night I was at a high school football game and I saw a young high school aged brother wearing Addidas slides with white crew socks.
A damn fine look and he looked so comfortable too.
Now that I have tge validation of a 16 year old I think it’s time.

Glad to hear it!  I may follow if I can get the right look.  I wonder - do they make socks without toes like those gloves without fingers?  That might be a good halfway approach - keep the sweat off the bottom of the foot but leave the toes free to move about the cabin.  Hmmm.
