Are there songs that you hate for two reasons?
1 Because they are terrible insipid songs with no redeeming value to begin with, and
2. Because they get stuck in your head
The familia and I went to Fiesta Texas and while we were in Pete's Eats, they played "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies.
I have heard this song a couple dozen times in my life and I absolutely despise it. In part, because it attaches to my brain like a bacterial infection and repeats itself over and over again.
I don't want a candy girl. I just want. to. be. left. alone.
Why isn't there an app for that? Or OTC medication? Or something?
-
I'm more annoyed by the use of that song in an artificial sweetener ad campaign, than I am by the song itself.
-
The songs from commercials always get stuck in my head. Like the Farmers-Only jingle, or the "Ford is the BEST in Texas" song.
As far as full fledged songs, I'm glad the Gangham Style song went out of mainstream play because that one got super annoying. Made that S.Korean guy rich, though, so I guess it was a bit of a phenomenon but I always had to change the station when it popped on because I'd have that beat going on in my head unwillingly for far too long for my liking.
-
Songs from commercials are precisely why I created the other thread!
For straight-up "evil songs" I'll throw out Debbie Gibson's "Only In My Dreams." I really hated that song, but any time I heard it, it would be stuck in my head for hours.
-
I'll preface this by saying that I like Hall and Oates. I think "She's Gone" and "Sara Smile" stand up well as R&B ballads.
But along about 1981 they had this song called "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" that must've been maliciously and repetitiously calculated to worm its way into a person's frontal lobe and stay for days or weeks on end.
-
I consider Hall and Oates to be pretty close to yacht rock, and I think one defining characteristic of yacht rock, is that ALL of those songs were maliciously and repetitiously calculated to worm their way into a person's frontal lobe.
Please note, I'm not saying I don't like yacht rock, I actually love most of it. But, it's definitely evil sometimes.
Think... "I'm alright... nobody worry 'bout me... why you got to put up a fight?... why can't you just let me be?..."
Yeah. You're welcome.
-
Kenny Loggins.
You know, Jim Messina kept him tethered to real, if not entirely profitable music. And then he just went nuts.
Seriously isn't Highway to the Danger Zone just the fourth verse to I'm All Right, with Footloose being the second and Lindsay Buckingham chiming in with Holiday Road as the third?
-
the theme to CaddyShack is golden!

Brian McKnight covered "I Can't Go For That" on one of his early albums, and it kinda has the same effect. There's better songs on the album, but that on track was always what kept popping up in my head.
-
I'll tell you a ditty that has stuck with me for ages....
No more bull
No more bull
C'mon down to Bastrop that's where all the bull stops....
And then announcer says "Longhorn Ford & Mercury, Bastrop Texas"

Ever see those old Yacht Rock videos on YouTube? Not sure if it's a small niche that just happened to land on my particular sense of humor, musical taste, and trivial knowledge, but I thought they were hilarious back when they came out.

Yacht Rock???
I'm not familiar with the term or it's definition
and I'm happy to stay that way
sounds absolutely dreadful
now wondering if it's an optional station on Pandora?

It has its own Sirius/XM station, so I'm certain you can call it up on Pandora.
And you, being the late 70s music listening mofo I know you to be, have no doubt experienced-- and ENJOYED-- yacht rock.
-
late 70s is good as long as its not too poppy
-
Steely Dan? Doobie Brothers? Other similar artists... all classified (loosely) as yacht rock.
It's not so bad. Lots of fun tunes in that (artificially made-up) genre. :)
-
Steely Dan & Doobie Brothers are good by me
-
Well then, my friend, you like Yacht Rock.
Congratulations! ;)

Ever notice how we as humans love to sort, categorize and label? It's like our little bitty minds rebel against assessing things individually on the value of its own merit. So much easier to group and dismiss...
Oh that's yacht rock.
Typical blonde.
The story takes place in Florida. What do you expect?
They all drive that way.
Damn kids.
Oh you're one of those religious fanatics.
Freaking hipsters. Bet they moved here from California.
Old people suck.
etc.

Ha! It was just an observation. Not an opinion. Ya typical illiterate butthurt reactionary message board nice guy.

I bet he looks like John Stamos.

Lately I've been shooting for Don Draper.

Anything by ABBA or the BeeGees or Barry Manilow for me. And I really don't like bands like REO Speedwagon and Journey who started off as pretty decent garage rock bands but then went commercial with soda pop songs featuring those guys with high-pitched singing voices like Kronin or Perry. I remember going to an early REO concert at the Tulsa fairgrounds where Gary Richrath played really mean extended guitar jams with the band on songs like Ridin' the Storm Out, etc ... but then they turned into a commercial success and it went to milk toast. Yuck.
-
I love ABBA. So does Dave Grohl from Nirvana/Foo Fighters, so I think I'm okay having that position.
Their tunes will definitely stick in your brain though, that's for sure.
-
My dear wife like ABBA too. Or maybe she just enjoys knowing that I don't like them, and likes to taunt me with their music :)
-
I've always enjoyed musical theater, and their music is very theatrical. So much, so, that they've made it into two musicals, apparently. :)
-
Any song I play on my boat is "yacht rock" as far as I'm concerned.
Anything by Whitney Houston or Celine Dion makes my skin crawl.
-

I liked ABBA in the 70's, before I became aware of better music
I would ever say I loved ABBA and even if I did I wouldn't admit to it.
Having Dave Grohl in your camp isn't a plus in my book
but, I realize each person has their own book and tastes and I don't judge
If you love ABBA, good for you. I could put up with a few of their tunes during one of your tailgates and possibly I did while having a great time
-
Oh no, ABBA is not tailgate music. A few of their songs are definitely lake music, because they get the girls up and dancing.
Tailgate music is Van Halen and Willie Nelson and Robert Earl Keen.
But speaking of the 70s, here's a truly "evil" song from one of my favorite bands of the era:

OK, I looked up Yacht rock....... probably not my thing, too much soft pop
TOP 10 YACHT ROCK SONGS OF ALL TIME
"In the musical sense, yacht rock refers to the highly polished brand of soft rock that emanated from Southern California between 1976 and 1984. The term is meant to suggest the kind of smooth, mellow music that early yuppies likely enjoyed while sipping champagne and snorting cocaine on their yachts. Significant "yacht rockers" include Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, and Toto."
10. England Dan & John Ford Coley -- "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" (1975)
9. Robbie Dupree -- "Steal Away" (1980)
8. Player -- "Baby Come Back" (1978)
7. Kenny Loggins -- "This Is It" (1979)
6. Michael McDonald -- "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)" (1982)
5. Toto -- "Rosanna" (1982)
4. Daryl Hall & John Oates -- "Kiss on My List" (1980)
3. The Doobie Brothers -- "What a Fool Believes" (1978)
2. Steely Dan -- "Hey Nineteen" (1980)
1. Christopher Cross -- "Sailing" (19 )

Last night about 3:40 in the morning, I crawled out of bed and staggered to the bathroom. I felt nauseated, like I had food poisoning, but I didn't. I merely had a song stuck in my head that had replayed so many times in my sleep that it had made me sick.
The song?
Elton John's Benny and the Jets.
Bennay Bennay Bennay Bennay Bennay Bennay Benny and the Jets
-
The only way I could get to sleep was to overwrite Benny and the Jets in my mind with the Isley Brother's It's Your Thing.
It's Your Thing is a repetitious song too so it makes for a great re-channeling but it's kind of cool too so I can tolerate it much more easily than hearing Bennay Bennay Bennay Bennay Bennay Bennay Benny and the Jets over and over again.
In case you've forgotten, it goes:
It's your thang
Do whatchu wanna do
I can't tell you
Who to sock it to
-
Hey Nineteen and What A Fool Believes are great songs.
Some definite clunkers on that list, though.
-
One of the most annoying evil songs ever, is "Hey Jude." I can take the first 1/3 where verses actually exist, but latter 2/3 of endless refrains of "naaa na na na na na naaaaaaaa" makes me want to apply Chinese water torture to any remaining Beatles that might still be out there.
-

I really like Michael McDonald. Steely Dan too. One of my oldest friends is Mr. McDonald's bass player now, which allowed me to hang out with him for a while when he came here last year. I'll tell you two disappointing things about that affair. Like all the acts at "that" point of their careers, you're gonna get two things from them at a live show. You're gonna get a greatest hits list and an offering of new material from their latest stuff. Unfortunately his hits all come from his early solo days or the Doobie Brothers, and my favorite stuff of his was "middle career" stuff, which albums did not produce radio hits, so I got to hear a bunch of stuff that's still good, but not my fave. The other disappointing thing was the man had shaved his beard. I took some pics with him and put them on social media, but how am I supposed to convince people I met the guy when he's completely unrecognizable? Everybody knows Michael McDonald sports the white beard. I saw footage of shows directly before and after I met him.....he's bearded in all of them. I got maybe the only pictures of him ever taken that nobody would think I really met him.
He's coming back near here in December. He better have a beard and be ready to do some stuff from Take It To Heart and Blink of an Eye.

My Bennie and the Jets equivalent is Marley’s I Shot the Sheriff. They played the same tape during EVERY 9th grade lunch hour and that was on it. Ruined me for Marley and the Wailers for years before I realized they had music that actually kind of nice to listen to.
It’s like spinach. My elementary school cafetería always soaked it in vinegar and I ranked it as possibly the worst food known to humankind (in my limited sample, this is long before I’d encountered stinky tofu). Then one day much much later I had spinach with I dunno oil or butter or something, and realized that it was the Muskogee public school system that was willingly inflicting this evil on an otherwise innocent and pretty tasty leaf.

The last 2/3 of "She's So Heavy" would drive you nuts as well. The Beatles had a way sometimes of outstaying their welcome.
Number 9, Number 9, Number 9, Number 9......

agreed, not sure what they could have possibly done to make spinach taste any worse
I don't need no education!

This thread reminds of me of the always clever Weird Al and his Achy Breaky Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7kfm6QmROA), which takes jabs at several known annoying artists/musicians on top of the song it is parodying.

Hall and Oats' Kiss On My List is common earworm of mine, and it's not that I even am exposed to that song often or anything. I'll just wake up and BAM it's in my head.
Speaking of Hall and Oats, I saw them live little over a year ago. They toured with Tears for Fears and I gotta say it was a pretty decent concert. I will say Tears for Fears voices have aged quite a bit better than Hall and Oats' voices.

TFF are over a decade younger than Hall and Oates, so, yeah.
Darryl Hall is currently 71, and John Oates is 70.
Yes they're old. So are we. ;)

I remember I once had the Steve Miller Band’s Abracadabra stuck in my head for about nine weeks. It was like a bad case of hiccups. Every time I exclaimed it had left, it came back.

Supposedly studies have shown listening to Mozart temporarily raises one's IQ. I wonder if you got a Mozart piece stuck in your head, could you become permanently smarter?

Michael McDonald caused problems in my young life.
As a youngster of 16 or 17 I was naive but, like most folks that age, passionately opinionated. I liked Aerosmith, the Eagles, Poco, the Steve Miller Band, Jim Croce, stevie Wonder, the Commodores and George Benson. And that was it. Everyone else I mostly despised albeit with the exception of maybe 1 or 2 songs. For example, I liked China Grove and Black Water but otherwise the Doobie Brothers could go to hell.
Enter Wendy, my first love who liked “crap” like Boston, the Moody Blues, Led Zepplin (of course, what girl born the ‘60s didn’t?) and the new sounding Michael McDonald Doobie Brothers.
So we hung out at each others house, trying (I suppose) to fulfill ourselves with each other and all I heard was “Minute by Minute” and “What a Fool Believes.” We wore that album out.
But I never really got everything I wanted out of the relationship so I grew to despise Michael McDonald’s deep Eyeore voice.
Towards the end of the semester, my... ears... were so blue, I blew up and told her what I really thought of the post-Johnston-era Doobie Brothers and my verbose rejection was more than her tender impressionable young round... ears... could take.
We broke off non amicably.
She befriended me some years back on FB before I knew it was a mind control device for the Rooskies. For an old woman she don’t look too bad. Not too fat. Still has an angel smile and pretty brown eyes of the lightest most interesting shade. Almost golden.
But I imagine she still has piss poor taste in music so I never like any of her posts or even post on her page when it’s her birthday.

Dude,
Wishing the poor thing Happy Birthday wouldn't be too much. Have a heart.

That's not a bad song at all.
I've always loved this 1970 hit of theirs, however.

Another artist who manages to camp in my head for days at a time is Eddie Money, especially this song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8zoSAsiJUc
-
My summer of Wendy and Michael McDonald was 1978 so at that time the Moody Blues were 3 years away from their image reinventing Long Distance Voyager album, more thAn 10 years removed from their haunting Nights in White Satin and were mired in songs like Driftwood and Steppin in a Slide Zone.
I double dog dare you to listen to those songs all the way through.
-
Eddie Money (Take Me Home Tonight) reminds me of Joe Jackson for some reason.
Is She Really Going Out With Him?
-
Both of them remind me of this one by the Tubes, maybe the era is why?

I've always suspected people who liked the "classic" Doobie Bros. probably hated Michael McDonald. I've never seen one guy so radically change a band. Ever. They went from a folksy kinda pop-rock to basically an R&B fusion band that sounded exactly like MM's early solo material. For better or for worse, depending on your preference (doesn't matter to me, I like both versions), McDonald bitch-slapped that band and re-made them in his image.
-
Riiiiiiide, Run my last race, take my place, it's for free.....
Or something like that. Got that one hung in the old noggin for weeks, but actually enjoyed it being there.
-
One song that has been so overused in commercials that it just needs to be banned for about 21 years is American Authors’ ‘Best Day of My Life.’
Li-ai-ife my li-ai-ai-ai-ai-ife
Just. Stop.
-
One song that has been so overused in commercials that it just needs to be banned for about 21 years.....
We all probably hear the first 30 seconds of Born To Be Wild at least twice a day.

Even though this is off the topic of the thread, it's still the closest thing to a music thread we have.
So, head bowed out of respect for the passage of the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.
My dear wife's favorite music genre is R&B, and she particularly likes female singers with a big voice and heavy pathos, like Etta James, Bessie Smith, Mercedes Sosa, etc ... and for sure Aretha. All week we've been listening to her songs like Natural Woman, Say a Little Prayer, RESPECT, etc. Also we downloaded and watched the Blue Brothers and her classic diner scene with the song Think! on the eve of her passing. It was my son's first time seeing the Blues Bros, and of course he loved it.
RIP Aretha
-
...and without MATT GUITAR MURPHY.
RIP Aretha.

Yep, we lost another great one.
A track that I particularly always loved of hers that your wife may not have heard, but might be interested in, is Aretha's "newer" version of "Somewhere." I say newer, this still comes from '95 or '96. I'm pretty sure she had recorded this song much earlier in her career, but I have to say I like this one even better. The link says this was unreleased, but that's not true. It's from a compilation album called "Songs of the West Side Story." Phil Collins actually does the same song on that album, and both his and Aretha's versions are great in their own way.

Well then, my friend, you like Yacht Rock.
Congratulations! ;)
You know there's a Yacht Rock touring band? They're quite good actually. My wife and I went to a show here in Indy this summer. Great show on a lawn pavilion. Bring your own chairs, picnic/booze, etc. Most of the founders are IU alum. The crowd is what you would imagine. 98% white, 35-80.
-
I recently heard somebody opine that Michael McDonald is the only guy that aged 40 years instantly (in his young 20s,) and has managed to look the same ever since. Yes, that beard is a must. I've also heard people express surprise to find out that he's a white guy. Rick Astley had that problem too.
Which reminds me, 'Together Forever' is one of those songs that nearly led me to commit crimes as a youth. No song though generates more disgust to me than BTO's 'Takin Care of Business'. The vocalist sounds like he's got a mouth full of novocaine. I once read that Bachman or whoever wrote the song, pitched the song when he was a part of The Guess Who, who said 'not interested'. Speaking of which, nobody better speak ill of 'These Eyes.'
-

"These Eyes" is a great mood song. I caught it on youtube the other day.
Some nights I lay in bed scrolling youtube with no particular purpose. One of my faves is to listen to songs I haven't heard in awhile. Remember "Chevy Van"? I listened to that one last night. Ah, memories.
