Another shorty, but goodie.
I'll post #46 later, as I've only found 2 guys I'd even think of listing.....I'm sure I'll find a few more. I'm driving cross-country right now, and I've got 900 miles of Texas to cover today.
-
Two-time All American at Kansas, best back in the Big 8 in his first season. Has to be Sayers.
-
Graham's 2,132 career passing yards was a Big Ten record at the time he graduated. No clue where that is on the list now, I can't find a list that goes down that far. Jim Everett's 3,256 yards is now #25 in Big Ten history...for a single season.
-
Sayers is the best running back/returner I've ever seen (film, of course) of any, anywhere.
-
There is a line of thought that losing him to KU was what ultimately doomed Bill Jennings at Nebraska, paving the way for the hire of Bob Devaney a few years later.
-
Additionally, KU's all-time backfield would probably be:
QB: Nolan Cromwell
FB: John Riggins
RB: Gale Sayers
...not too shabby.
-
Todd Reesing would not be a bad choice for their best ever qb either..
-
Wouldn't matter. Why would they ever put the ball in the air?
-
3 huge names in history
gotta go with the kid from Omaha
-

exactly why you go with Cromwell, if one of the backs fumble Nolan can pick it up and run or make the tackle
-
Some things:
We have 2 contemporaries, which is rare for this series. Bertelli won the '43 Heisman, Graham finished 3rd.
Bertelli had three top-6 Heisman finishes, but he didn't pass a ton, didn't run much...I'm wondering why he was so highly thought-of (besides being ND's QB).
KU's coach must've been a moron....his first year, he averaged 7.1 ypc. He never had as many carries in a season as he did that first year. WTF?
-
He must have figured if he reduced his carries his ypc would be even better.

Damn, ELA, why'd you beat me to it?
-
Ah, except his backups didn't average higher ypc.....
-
that wasn't the goal
the goal was the Kansas comet having the highest YPC
-
You didn't understand a word I said, apparently.
The goal, in this case, would be to give Sayers the ball so often that his YPC decreased until it equaled the backups'.
-
your moneyball goal
not the goal of the Coach in charge
-
Giving the most effective RB the ball more isn't going to help you win? Since when???
-

If that is the case, Nebraska was very fortunate to not recruit Gale Sayers.
-
My Dad got to play against Sayers in high school. He did not tackle him. Zig zag, TD.
-
I played against the 'other' Adrian Peterson (Ga Southern/Chicago Bears), Ian Scott (Florida/Bears), and Thad Bullard (Florida/WWE "Titus O'Neil").
-
I completely forgot about Terrell Suggs, DE, Arizona St.
I specifically had him in mind, but evidently not when I posted the poll. I'm confident Sayers wins anyway, but I bet Suggs would've finished 2nd. My bad.
