Hi, just breaking into your regularly scheduled summer porch ponderings to make this observation in the subject line.
I was hoping against hope that it would be, as it would have given me triple word points and F+K alone gives you 9 to start with.
But alas the Sooner-Fusker rivalry is in moth balls, Nebraska has floundered in the B1G, and well it’s just been a long time since the ‘71 GOTC ... nearly fifty fuskin’ years ... so the term fusker is still not a dictionary word alas and given how lame big 10 smack is, may not even be in common use anymore where Nebraska rivals are concerned
Sheesh.
Okay, as you were - back to talking about the rise of Texas baseball, the magic of kolaches, why soccer will never be a major US sport, how DOUMED Texas football is, etc
-
Hey Cuz!
If you were playing scrabble with me, it would be a permissible word. For sure.
Speaking of futbol, I'm enjoying France-Belgium right now. With the USMNT out, these were actually my two next-favorite teams, due to time spent living in those countries and friends made there.

Hey Cuz
I know what you mean. I congratulated my French brother-in-law and he was happy but said it was kind of a “family game” (like the Argentina-France game earlier) as his godparents are Belgian so either outcome was okay with him.
France looks darn good right now. We’ll see who the face in the final soon. Either Croatia or England would make for a tough match.
Hope your summer’s going well. Belated congrats for how well the baseball Horns did - pretty dang impressive.

I don't Europe. I don't South America. I don't soccer. And I don't World Cup.
I could give a rodent's donkey about those things.
But it is so nice to see a post by Cousin Fred. I saw a pic of you and your son you posted on FB a while back. He's really growing up. You're looking good, amigo. Many sincere blessings to you and yours.

If you are playing through "Words With Friends", feel free to start up a game with me. I'm "Longhorn Erin" on there. I'm not as regular with it as I used to be but do play pretty often.
And Go CROATIA! I'm definitely tuning in this weekend for both of the WC games, partly by choice and partly not since my husband is a huge soccer dude.

I think my wife used to play that but she got mad cuz people would cheat. Or that's at least what she said. I'm not sure how it works but I guess there is an honor system.
I wouldn't play against males, put it that way.
-
I played all the time with LittleBigMatt (RIP), he was very active on there. Used to play ElTigreRex, too. Come to think of it, they both usually beat me in the games, so maybe they were cheating.
I don't really care too much about winning/losing, it's mostly a brain-game for me in my moments of boredom... I figure that game does me more good than watching dumb youtube videos of people opening Disney packages, or walking around outside looking for Pokemon Go thingys, or whatever other time-killers people choose to do. Mostly I play against my mom, some cousins, and a few friends.
Once a friend started a game with a raunchy word and we made it our mission to use as many other raunchy, dirty, or filthy words it would take in that game, with no regards to whether or not the word scored high points, but just to have a collage of dirty words in a single game at completion. I took a screenshot of it at some point but have changed devices so I'm not sure if I kept it or not. So, for me it's not always about winning but the fun of it, too.

Nebraska fans mob the Lincoln Airport to welcome the team home after Nebraska upsets Texas in 1960.

Glad they enjoyed that extremely rare win over the Horns.
-
I'm sure they did
I know I enjoyed the very rare win in my lifetime in 1999
-
I was in San Antonio. I saw how you Huskers "celebrated." Shame on you.
;)
-
I was back on 6th street in Austin - celebrating
had no issues
I was in a dueling pianos bar
-
Pete's Peanut Bar?
That place was great.
Except for the rare occasion when Husker assholes showed up in the joint.
-
sounds like the place
but that was a couple decades ago, back when the Huskers were good
and I'm bad with remembering names
-
Except for the rare occasion when Husker assholes showed up in the joint.
Those weren't just any A-Holes,they were the "Original" H.P.S.That always cracked me up
-
I never thought I'd miss those guys, but I really miss those guys
-
There were only a couple of really bad ones. The rest were pretty okay.
And one was a certifiable lunatic.
-
quite a few teams had one fan that was a certifiable lunatic
-
Gah! Kids today! Just don't have the same passion we used to. If they do, it's cause they're nuts.
I swear it's not me getting old and grumpy!
-
Ha! I was a "kid" back then and could still recognize that there were some complete lunatics.
Notorious King Of Trash comes to mind...

I like it
-
because you've heard it
-
It really is the worst.
-
If you're a fan of the other team getting beat, I'm sure it is the worst.
But to me, it sounds like Rhapsody in Crimson and Cream.
-
no unlike button
-
Not unless you like first.
See if Drew can add one.
On second thought, don't. It wouldn't be good on the "Stream of Unconsciousness" thread on the B1G board.
-
At this point that thread should just be nuked from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
-
I wish I could remember NOT to click on it

the accountants and money always win
I'm pretty sure it's not right, possibly evil, but it's the way of the world

I'd welcome the Huskers and Ags back to the B12.

Nebraska always needed a recruiting pitch. The corn fed boys are big and all, but they relied on convincing outside players to visit. When they were rolling and smashing everyone with power option, it advertised itself (editorial commentary about Big 8 qualifications ignored for purposes of brevity).
Obviously, selling UNL to outsiders has been rough lately. Leaving the Big 12 didn't make it easier. However, I'd think that the NIL rulings might be their way back. Nebraska has no major professional sports teams. Seems like there should be plenty of branding opportunities.

Maybe, but I kinda think NIL opportunities are really just going to become table stakes. All of the big-name programs (and even wealthy programs that aren't big-name) will be able to offer quite a bit to the athletes.
Doesn't mean NU won't be successful at it. I just don't think it will end up being a competitive advantage, except against the have-nots.
As always, the rich will get richer...
-
so far, I know it's early, there's no talk of big money being funneled from boosters
that could easily change overnight
-
I imagine all the TRUE dealings are occurring right now.
The first wave was just the student-led initiatives, their attempts to launch clothing or other kinds of promotions, on their own.
But now the corporations will be getting involved. And those negotiations will take time and be a lot more thorough.
And of course, as far as recruiting HS kids goes, none of that can be announced until the kid is actually enrolled and on-campus. Many (most?) of the states have some provision along those lines, to avoid recruiting bidding wars, even though those will happen regardless. We just won't hear about them until the Fall.
-
Nah. I'm talking about legit branding opportunities. In Texas, things are kind of localized. A Longhorn football great can play well in several locales, but not everyone's a fan. Every school in America will have a decent amount of those licensing deals.
Nebraska has no professional sports franchises. Being the successful QB of the Huskers would let you plaster your face wherever you'd like.
I'm not saying it's instant recruiting mojo. I'm saying it's a better enticement than they've had in a while.
-
the husker coaches are pushing that recruiting pitch
we shall know the results in a few years
every little bit helps

Nebraska has no professional sports franchises. Being the successful QB of the Huskers would let you plaster your face wherever you'd like.... in Nebraska.
But the state of Nebraska's population is smaller than the population of the city of Austin metro area, so I really don't think it's going to make much difference.
And nationally, there's no way the QB at Nebraska is going to gain more national recognition than the QB at Texas. Texas is the largest brand in all of college sports. I'm not saying this to belittle Nebraska, I'm just saying I don't think this is going to give them some edge that their peers in the B1G can't also capitalize on in much the same way.
-
not going to be much national branding - college football isn't national
not even Bama or Clemson or Ohio St. or Texas
-
now, there are players that can have national recognition, but they are rare
thinking of Vince Young type players
-
I'd welcome the Huskers and Ags back to the B12.
Now that's a stand up act of contrition right there :D

Contrition? For what?
I'm magnanimous, is what I am.
