Umm, his dad was.....

sorry, kickers of any sort don't win these votes
-
They should, shouldn't they? Shouldn't the best kicker of all time (whoever that is) beat out say, the 20th-best QB of all-time?
If there's been about 82 Heisman winners and if you don't count returners, kickers and punters make up 2/24 of the players on the field (8.3%). So kickers and punters should have 6-7 Heismans......
-
they are kickers, dude
long snappers don't win anything either, unless they are also short snappers that block like Rimmington
-
Has Vanderbilt won their proportionate share of SEC titles? I agree it's too QB centric, but I cant think of a kicker possibly adding enough value to a team to overcome in a down year.
Is their any overarching stat like WAR for football players that measure players value on the whole across positions? I'd be curious about that.

If you have a guy that doesn't miss from 50 and in, it's a virtual guaranteed 3 points anytime you get to the opponent's 35 - that's not worth a lot?!?
Or a punter who nets 15 yards more than your opponents' punters? 15 yard advantage (gain?) every time you have to yield possession.....
I think we value each position very poorly. A great punter is a huge yardage advantage in a game. A great kicker puts points on the board and provides peace of mind.
All that being said, kicker/punters are the radicalized version of "all other positions besides offensive skill positions".....10 linebackers should have a Heisman by now, 8 corners, 26 offensive linemen, etc.
That's the point.

One could make a punter case, but I’d need some really good numbers on it.
-
The worse your offense is, the more important your punter. I guess that's true of your defense, too (longer field). So if the importance of your punter is in direct correlation with the quality of your team, then we need a guy with a great boot on a winless team for Heisman!

let's get a D-linemen and O-lineman a trophy first, then we'll talk about the kicker

Suh and Pace.
