Title: Your earliest memory of each major bowl
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on June 01, 2018, 01:39:41 AM
Can you list your first memory of watching each of the major bowls (say 5 - Orange, Sugar, Rose, Fiesta, Cotton).  By that I mean you remember watching the game and can still recall specific plays and/or the score - NOT a game you've since seen dozens of clips from and vaguely recall it.  Concrete remembrance.

For me:
Cotton - 1991 season....I vaguely recall Miami was in the news for the 91 Cotton, but that doesn't count
FSU 10
A&M 2
Recall seeing if A&M was for real with a weak schedule.  FSU defense outshined wrecking crew.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Orange - 1991
Colorado 10
N. Dame 9
Will never forget the Rocket Ismail punt return TD that wasn't.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fiesta - 1993
Arizona 29
Miami   0
Surreal game, first time Miami looked slow in my memory.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Rose - 1991
Washington 34
Michigan    14
Was a big fan of Desmond Howard, but Washington was just too good all-around.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sugar - 1991
N. Dame 39
Florida    28
Florida kicked a bunch of FGs, then couldn't stop Jerome Bettis in 4th quarter.  Started the day with an outside shot at the NC if Miami and Washington lost (they both won, obviously).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
***I thought there'd be more of a range of years for each of the 5 bowls, but I was wrong.  I don't know why the Fiesta was delayed a couple of years in my world, but it was.  Hopefully for some of you older guys, the years won't align like mine do.

btw, go ahead and look up the bowl game histories to be able to pinpoint the correct years.

1982 orange bowl.. Huskers vs Clemson.  UNL has a chance late in the game to tie the game and commits a several offensive penalties that kill the drive.  What I mostly remember about that game were those penalties.....

'96 Citrus:
#3 Tennessee vs #4 Ohio State - first bowl ever watched, hard hitting and played out more like an NFL rivalry. At the time I did not appreciate the Peyton Manning vs (Heisman Winner) Eddie George storyline.

'96 Rose:
SC vs Northwestern (miracle season)

'96 Fiesta:
#1 Nebraska vs #2 Florida - blowout

'96 Orange:
Florida State vs Notre Dame (31-26 FSU)

'97 Sugar:
#1 FSU vs #2 Florida - Gators trounce Seminoles 52-20

'98 Holiday:
Arizona vs Nebraska - 23-20; stayed up plate to see the finish, watching with my grandpa, because it was so very rare to see Nebraska lose back then

'01 Cotton:
Tennessee vs Kansas State - Not sure if I caught an earlier year, but first I can remember was '01; was a "down year" for Tennessee and K State came out roaring though Travis Henry did put up good yards on Snyder's D.

Very first college football game I watched in it's entirety was '95 FSU @ Florida - Gators won, finishing 11-0 Reg Season, Emmitt Smith visiting on sidelines. Earlier that year I caught bits of NW vs ND & ND vs Ohio State.

You can tell when I started watching college football; just into my third decade now.

1966 cotton Bowl, a good UGA team beat somebody, SMU?  With a player named George Patton, then 1968 Sugar Bowl when UGA was heavily favored but lost 16-2 to Arkansas.

1953 Orange Bowl. Spent the entire month of December reading and hearing how the 'Beast of the East' Syracuse was going to run all over Bama. Final score: 61-6 Bama!

1954 Cotton Bowl. Dicky Moegel of Rice did run all over Bama. Game remembered most for Tommy Lewis coming off the bench and tackling him on one of his long runs.

1959 Liberty. I know you said Major, but I've got to throw this one in because it was Bama's first Bowl under Coach Bryant, plus your old HC, Galen Hall, threw a TD pass off a fake FG attempt to win the game 7-0 for PSU.

1962 Sugar Bowl. I was at this one. Tulane Stadium with New Years Eve snow still on the ground. Coach Bryant's first NC team beat Arkansas 10-3 by shutting down Lance Alworth. Arky had 55 yards passing on 2-10-3 with both receptions by Alworth, fumbling after his long of 31. Bama also held him to 15 yards rushing.

1973 Rose Bowl. USC's Sam Cunningham ran all over tOSU, scoring 4 TDs. Guess that was the year for big horses!  :93: If I could go back in time and see any sporting event it would be the '73 Belmont.

Even though the Hawkeyes sucked when I was a kid, we watched the Rose Bowl, as it was the Big Ten's game againt the PAC-8. It was a game the Big Ten dominated until it didn't. Because the Hawkeyes sucked I was going to grow up and personally save the program when I got into college. My adult height soared to 5'8". I didn't quite accomplish my goal. And that's not to say I wasn't the toughest little kid on the block. I could lift more than most big kids. I could hit harder than most. And I never, until decades later, let my high school teammate who was All Big Ten  know how jarring it was, or how much it hurt me, when I took him down in practice. Had he known, he wouldn't have gone down.
My early memories were of Indiana in the Rose Bowl with a running back named Isenbarger; sort of like a slow moving iceberg that stopped for nothing. I don't remember how that Rose Bowl turned out. Or if it was my first memory of a Rose Bowl. I recall Sophomore Rex Kern leading Ohio State, possibly against Southern Cal and OJ Simpson.
Now I am going to cheat, and look.
The Indiana Rose Bowl v. USC is my first memory of a bowl game: 1/1/1968.
Ohio State v. USC is my next memory of a bowl game: 1/1/1969.
I seemed to recall Purdue was playing on 1/1/1967, but can recall no details of who played for Purdue in that game.
And the Big Ten was so good at that time :) no Big Ten team was allowed to play, even if it was the champion of the conference, two years straight. And the PAC-8 was at that time hard-up for wins and played whomever was 1st.

It's not cheating to look up the particulars.  I wouldn't have guessed 4 of my 5 were all the same year, but they were.

1/1/69 - Rose bowl. Still remember the grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Parents and a boatload of cousins sitting around the TV eating spare ribs watching Ohio State win the National Championship. I will have to think about the others.

Rose Bowl - Looking these up I vaguely recall some of the older games (like OSU's loss in '85) but I think the 1st Rose Bowl I was really into was the '93 Where M*ch's Wheatley and Gerbac beat Washington's Napoleon Kaufman in a close, great game.

Fiesta Bowl - '84 OSU (Mike Tomczak, Keith Byers) thrilling come from behind victory over Pitt. Byers had a 99 yard kickoff return, Pitt had a weird failed 2 point conversion, Tomzak threw an interception dropped by pitt, and then got a lucky 4th and 10 conversion, before hitting .... someone for the game winning TD with less than a minute.

Sugar Bowl - '98 FSU (Janikowski) taking OSU (Joe Germaine, David Boston, Michael Wiley) behind the woodshed. Cooper - *Shakes Fist*

Orange Bowl - '99 Florida beating up Donovan Mcnabb and Syracuse.

youngster...  that was my Frosh year at UNL - very fond memories of that season
I remember many things about that game.
As had happened to the Cornhuskers in 1970, the stage was set for a charge to the top by events earlier on New Year's Day, 1982. Clemson, undefeated Atlantic Coast Conference champions and ranked No. 1, dug in for the challenge from Big Eight champion and No. 4-ranked Nebraska. Meanwhile, Texas and Pittsburgh were giving the Cornhuskers their chance at No. 1. Pitt beat No. 2 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl and Texas toppled No. 3 Alabama, 14-12, in the Cotton Bowl. Would 1970 repeat? Could No. 4 Nebraska knock off No. 1 Clemson and claim the title?
This is what I miss about the old bowl system. up to 4 teams could still have a shot at the national title on new year's day.
Turner Gill was injured and out of the game.  Senior QB Mark Mauer had played brilliantly in a huge win over the Sooners, but didn't play well in the Orange bowl.  Mike Rozier threw a TD pass, my favorite I-back, Roger Craig from Iowa, had a good game with a 26 yard TD run and 8 yard 2-point conversion run in the 4th quarter to make it 15-22 and give the Huskers a chance.
LB Steve Damkroger, who tailgates with me now, had a good game.
And the national unveiling of Freshman William "refrigerator" Perry

my earliest memory of the Orange Bowl was 1971, I was 8 years old.  My parents had a party in the basement that evening and my aunts and uncles from Omaha kept coming upstairs to check the score of the game.

Don't remember much about that game, but it was against LSU and it was close.

The Husker fans were excited.  Much fun.

What was Keith Byars like at OSU?  All I remember of him was as a chubby, slow FB who caught passes out of the backfield for the Philadelphia Eagles.  I can't picture him as a 1,000 yard RB at all.

this Rose bowl could have been my first memory of the Rose.  I would have been 7, so pretty young.
If not this game it would have been the 1971 Rose won by Stanford and Jim Plunkett

Maybe it's his running style, I don't know.  Looks weird to me, like he's gotta take a dump and holding it in.

The opposite of Larry Johnson, PSU, actually.  When I picture him, his strides seem six yards long, like his foot stays on the ground too long and ends up far behind him before picking it back up to make his next stride.

I'm weird.

I guess Johnson was sort of like Wheatley, in that he was too fast for his size.  But Wheatley ran really upright.

Makes me feel like an idiot.....gosh, all these tall RBs ran upright.  Or they were just tall.  LOL

I compare it to a "rising" fastball.  No pitch actually rises, but it looks like it does simply because it fails to fall at the normal angle.  It also falls, but more gradually.

Maybe tall RBs running upright is simply an optical illusion in the same way?

those physicists don't know JACK.
that fast ball rises
do they think that the curve ball doesn't move because of the spin on the ball either?
I can hit a rise ball with my driver on the golf course with the correct spin.
these are the same jokers that explain the best way to shoot free throws is with back spin so that they fall into the basket - wouldn't top spin then be the opposite of back spin
did none of these nerds play ping pong?

I was always shocked by Calvin Johnson running. He looked like he was out for a leisurely jog, and yet the fastest cornerback on the opposing team couldn't even dream of keeping up with him. Vince Young was a bit like that too...
I think it was just an illusion of a tall player with a long stride, compared to those little sparkplug RBs that looked like their legs were churning 1000mph on a hamster wheel...

Eric Dickerson ran I bit high, but he had jets!
He also had a really nice gold Trans Am that the Aggies bought him!  He drove it for his first several years at SMU, until the Mustangs bought him something better. :)

My first memory of a bowl game is probably the 1978 Cotton Bowl.  Texas was undefeated, Earl Campbell had just won the Heisman, and those stoopid domers spoiled it all.

I always paid the most attention to the bowl game(s) that had an effect on the national title race.  So the games that stick out in my memory is framed by that.

1982 Sugar Bowl. Georgia vs. Penn St

1983 Orange Bowl. Miami vs. Nebraska

1986 Fiesta Bowl. Miami vs. Penn St

1987 Cotton Bowl- Notre Dame vs. Texas A&M.  I know I watched other Cotton Bowls prior to this but I remember this one because Tim Brown won the Heisman that year and during the course of the game he had a towel he was wearing around his waist taken by one of the A&M players and they kind of made a big deal about it.

1991 Rose Bowl. Michigan vs. Washington.  So, here’s the thing.  There is obviously a big difference in the dates of the other bowl games and the date of this one.  I had watched several Rose Bowls prior but none of them really stick out to me in any way because, like I mentioned, I sort of paid attention to the games that would influence the polls for the MNC.  I don’t really remember any Rose Bowls prior to this one that really did that.  This is the first one I was really dialed into going into it.

Rose: wash 28 Iowa 0.  We just got done plowing and shoveling a ton of snow.

Orange: got to stay up to watch the Clemson v Nebraska game. 82 OB .

Sugar: auburn v Mich 9-7, opposite the Nebraska v Miami OB.  We had a 13 inch black and white turned on to the sugar w the sound down .

Cotton: bama v UT . Great game. 14-12.

Fiesta: asu 32 ou 21. Dupree ran wild, an amazing performance on so few carries while he was so out of shape . Switzer was angry.

There are audio recordings of me talking in the background of  the 80 cotton and 79 sun bowl but I don't remember these games. My brother always messed around w my dad's dictaphone.

I have a vague memory of 1979 Rose Bowl following the 1978 season when Charles White scored winning TD on play where he clearly fumbled before the goal line but the fumble was not called.

But my first good memory was from the 1980 Rose Bowl following the 1979 season.  USC vs.  OSU.  That was the first time  I had seen the script Ohio done by the OSU band,  followed by the USC band performing Tusk from the new Fleetwood Mac album.

Oh yeah the game was pretty good too.  Undefeated OSU vs.  Undeated USC.  Once again Charles White scores the winning TD with less than a minute to play. USC is named co-national champion.

I can't recall a particular Rose Bowl game from my early childhood.  I typically watched the Cotton Bowl early in the day, and the Orange Bowl at night, which always had the "flashy" halftime show.  For the Rose, I just recall that it always seemed to be USC playing Ohio State or Michigan.  That might or might not be true for the years 1976-1983 when my football awakening was occurring, but that was my impression.

The Fiesta Bowl was not a major bowl until much later, I'd say the first one I remember was the 1987 Penn State-Miami game.

I was at that game. I remember saying to my dad next to me. He lost his shoe, he lost his shoe.
I also remember how dejected I was when Illinois came out strong early. If I remember right we were down by 24 at one point in the first half.
