The NCAA has no teeth. School Presidents will not provide the teeth. Cooperation = punishment. Cheaters win.I would think it would be much tougher now, in the age of social media and cell phone cameras.
I do believe cheating is worse now than ever. The amount of money involved in college sports compared to the 70's or 80's makes me believe this has to be true.
The NCAA has no teeth. School Presidents will not provide the teeth. Cooperation = punishment. Cheaters win.NCAA and University Presidents have teeth, they chose not to use them.
NCAA and University Presidents have teeth, they chose not to use them. The NCAA can not do a thing to your program if you block them from access. They have had to rely on outside organizations more than their internal capabilities. Regarding PSU... the NCAA had no authority on the matter. PSU could have said "pound sand". But revelations and facts create an atmosphere (and rightfully so) of cooperation and agreement. Nothing PSU did helped in winning games and the NCAA had no authority. So I'd said the NCAA still has little teeth...
The NCAA put some teeth into Penn St. not long ago. If the NCAA would cripple a program like Ole Miss the university pres and the other SEC programs would be forced to do something.
maybe a post-season ban of 8 years along with scholarship limit of 40 instead of 85 for the 8 seasons - put them in the tank for a decade - hurt the SEC in the process.
or just slap some wrists and keep raking in the $$$
I would think it would be much tougher now, in the age of social media and cell phone cameras.I get what you are saying, but pictures have come out and nothing happens.. If I want to give you a free meal or free shirts, no issues. Let me swipe this Amex Gift card and give the card back to you with your new shirt or steak dinner. Dad needs help, here is some cash in your car that is parked in a secured lot.... no cameras involved. The pressure to win is higher now than in the 70's. Coaches get fired a lot more often. How many coaches bend the rules to stay employed? How many universities? How many boosters? Money changes the moral bell curve. jmo..
I'd also speculate that it was a lot easier to keep the players out of trouble, so long as the PD and DA are fans.
I know we still see corruption like the situation in Tallehassee with Shameless Jameis, but that was still National News whereas in the 70s they'd've swept that bad boy under the rug faster than Roscoe P Coltrane can wreck a cruiser.
I would think it would be much tougher now, in the age of social media and cell phone cameras.Plus the media. How much national coverage was there of the college football offseason even 20 years ago? Very little. It was all the local guys, and they knew, but they weren't telling. Now, even if it's the local guy who finds out, he/she knows the only way to make it out of being stuck at local is to get the national story, so they are willing to blow up the local program, if it means they can get to a national media outlet.

what local person has blown up a story lately? I can't think of any, but perhaps that's a memory issue and I've missed a really good point..I think it was a local guy with the UM Practice Gate. I know with the MSU Nassar stuff, a bunch of the FOIA requests have been by Lansing writers. I just wanted to also make sure to include the caveat where it is a local breaking the story.
I thought Nassar was broke by an Indianapolis news reporter...??The initial story? Yes. But a lot of the subsequent stories about MSU's response. IIRC the original Indy story was heavier into his dealings with USA Gymnastics, Indy being where it's headquartered or something?
regarding Luck and XFL.. yep. The NCAA really has no power if cooperation is withheld. It would be very frustrating working for them in compliance. At least, I'd find it that way...
what local person has blown up a story lately?2000 - Wisconsin State Journal (Madison paper) exposes discount shoe store for giving discounts on shoes to student-athletes.
What happens if I have deep pockets and simply pay kids to go where I want, perhaps not even on scholarship? I might pay the parents. Is that illegal?someone paid Cam Newton's dad.
I pay the gift tax as well.
