Title: #2 Ohio State (1-0, 1-0) at Indiana (0-1, 0-1) Post Game
Post by: medinabuckeye1 on August 28, 2017, 12:38:38 PM
I didn't see a thread for this game yet so I thought I would start one.

It seems weird to start the season with a conference game on a weekday.

Ohio St leads the all time series 72-12-5.

Indiana dominated the series prior to OSU joining the Big Ten. They played every season from 1901-1905, with Indiana taking all but one, which was a tie.

Indiana won the inaugural Big Ten show down, 7-6 in 1913.

After that it's been pretty much all OSU, with Indiana picking up wins in 37, 43 (Paul Brown's final season), 47, 51 (Woody's first season), 87 (Earle Bruce's final season), and 88 (John Cooper's first season).

Indiana is the only team in the Big Ten that hasn't knocked off the Buckeyes a single time, since the 1980s.

Nothing too shocking from the depth chart.  Like 6 guys in the rotation at receiver.  Dobbins listed as co-starter at running back, and McCall listed as the backup there and not at H-back.  Kendall Sheffield in the mix at corner.

Hoosiers with all starters returning in the defensive backfield versus all new starters at WR for the Buckeyes. And that's a defense that shut down OSUs passing game last year.  Add to that 3 new starters in the defensive backfield for Ohio State, road game.    I smell tight game.

Perhaps Mister Bobby Knight might make a cameo appearance on the OSU side line?

I just don't see it brother. Kevin Wilson is a great coach, I'm a big fan of his. He's a huge part of the reason why Indiana has played Ohio State so close. He's now on Ohio State's sideline. He knows that Indiana team like the back of his hand, he'll know what to exploit and what not to. Ohio State's OL should be improved, there is plenty of talent on offense even if it is young, Mike Weber is rock solid RB and able to grind out the tough yards, and JT Barrett is the best QB in the conference with like 30 starts to his name and he's played in even more games than that.

Last but not least, Ohio State's front 7 will be way too much for Indiana to handle. This is the best front 7 that Ohio State has had in a minute, and it's deep.

edit: little talked about fact- Mike Weber is only the 3rd Ohio State RB ever to rush for 1,000+ yards as a freshman. Only Robert Smith and Maurice Clarett before him have accomplished that feat. Both of those guys were pretty good. Mike Weber gets slept on too much. He's a terrific young RB.

So you are predicting that it will be close until kickoff?

I am predicting that Ohio State will demolish Indiana. That's what I am predicting.
JT Barrett is already an excellent college QB and Kevin Wilson will get the absolute most out of him. That guy is a QB's best friend. Excellent offensive coach. Ohio State had a good OL last year, they were better run blockers than pass blockers- but the run blocking won't get any worse and the pass blocking should only improve. Mike Weber is a rock solid, dependable RB who will be on the field week in week out and eek out tough yards and keep drives going and Ohio State has a lot of young talent at RB to help Weber shoulder the load. Baugh is one of the top all-around returning TE's in the conference- if they decide to use him more in the passing game he is more than capable of producing. There is young talent in the WR corps- might not show itself game 1 but by the end of the season that unit will be more than fine.
Ohio State DL and LB's will completely overwhelm and control the Indiana offense. They will have one of the best front 7's in college football. They have 4 DE's that can really play and all have real experience in Lewis, Bosa Jr, Hubbard, and Holmes. Not many programs have that returning in 2017. They will be able to rotate in and out and stay fresh and get pressure on the QB and stuff the run almost at will. Really the only shot Indiana has is that all the new pieces in the Ohio State secondary aren't all in sync Game 1 and they are able to exploit the newbies in the passing game. But I don't see that happening if Indiana can't run the ball and the QB is going to be on his back most of the game.

I could see it being a close game.  Indiana had a decent defense and they promoted their DC to head coach and returned a lot.  OSU is implementing new stuff and is on the road, so could be some tough sledding there.  But I would be pretty disappointed if they gave up 27.  The defense should be stiffer than that.

not a chance. Ohio State is going to blow them off the field.
I don't like Michigan fans who root for Ohio State to lose against everybody they play. I want them to be undefeated when Michigan knocks them off at the end of the year. Those were the best- when Cooper would roll into that game with 1 or no losses and Michigan would beat Ohio State and crush their dreams of a National Title shot.

Ugh, OSU scored a long TD on a curl route?  Jeez.

For those who poo-poo 40 times, these long OSU TDs are the difference between a 4.5 guy and a 4.65 guy.

I liked it for week one.
Don't have to wait as long for the season to start, and you get a good game out of the gate, instead of some cream puff.

I watched until Indiana took its last lead, then had to move on to something else and it apparently thereafter was like an Ohio State avalanche falling on skilled skiers who could not outrun or outlast their doomsday event. Indiana had a very game defense in the 1st half and quite an offense through midway into the 3rd qtr.

Interesting little game.  Like all OSU fans I was beyond frustrated in the first half with the offense.  They seemed to drop the one of the two things they were good at last year (running with the QB) in exchange for short crossing routes that didn't seem to get them anywhere.  But they slowly got JT and the rushing game going, and that sprang open receivers everywhere all over the field.

I was not at all disappointed in the defense.  No part of me (and probably not the coaching staff) thought Indiana was going to come out at ludicrous speed.  Indiana threw and threw - 65 attempts is a hell of a way to introduce the secondary to college football.  Many times I thought Indiana made great plays against great coverage and a ridiculous pass rush.  Simmie Cobbs is going to be a load all year.  But Indiana had no run game and it was a matter of time before balls got tipped and some not as great throws were made.

The first half reminded me of the VT game a few years back.  The opposing QB made throws into good coverage that got caught.  The second half was not like the VT game.  As noted above, it was a matter of time before those throws were not pinpoint and turned into picks.

IU needed to be at least 3-0 in turnover margin, but they were 0-3 instead.  That "flip" if you will was the game for them.

Their QB was dropping passes into tight coverage all the first half and it was perhaps a matter of time before they got picked.

OSU allowed over 400 yards of offense to IU and I'm sure UM will have ample opportunity to "encourage" the Buckeyes this week in practice.

my take-aways....

Ohio State is the best team in the B1G.

Dobbins and a healthy Mike Weber are going to be the best RB duo in the conference if not vie for tops in the nation. That is a nasty 1-2 punch. JT Barrett pulling the trigger in the read option game with those two is going to be a three headed rushing monster. They NEED to feed the run game. For some reason they go long stretches without pounding the rock, doesn't make sense to me. This has been a real thing the last few years. Run. The. Ball.

I didn't get the JT Barrett hate on the internets. He is what he's always been. Not every throw is going to be perfect, but he threw plenty of catchable balls that his WR's just flat out dropped. Don't think the issue in the passing game is Barrett- think it's more the WR's. Paris Campbell might be the fastest guy in the B1G. Holy hell he can really fly. He also seems to really fight the ball and not be a natural WR. But get him the ball in space and watch him go. And he's got size. If he develops his hands and route running- he's got 1st round talent. I thought Jehu Chesson was a pretty fast WR- he was a legit 4.4 guy- but Campbell has even another gear- I think he's a legit 4.3 guy come NFL combine time.

Now on to the defense- Ohio State has the best front 7 in college football. I was convinced of this before that game. More convinced of it after. Bosa Jr and Sam Hubbard- those are what NFL teams dream up what DE's should look like. They look like they were created in a lab. Not to mention Lewis and Holmes. They have 4 future NFL DE's on the roster that have real playing experience in Holmes, Bosa JR, Hubbard, and Lewis- the interior DL's are definitely above average- and I saw that 5* DE Frosh Young out there a lot getting snaps and he looks pretty solid. The LBs are excellent with Baker and Worley both looking ready to rock and roll.

Wouldn't be too concerned about the secondary. Indiana has a really good QB and WR's- and they were just flat out making plays against good coverage. It happens. Ohio State won't face too many teams with a QB and WR crew that good. And that front 7 will take over games sooner or later. It'll basically be impossible for teams to just throw the ball like that all game long without the QB getting broken in half.

Here is my take away.

While Indiana completed a lot of passes, there were only about 3 or 4 that I can remember that were due to a lapse in coverage. Most of their catches came against great coverage. Cobb is going to be a great receiver in the B1G and then in the NFL. That guy has some great hands and is tall enough to have his way with most DB's.

I was really impressed with the half time adjustments, both offensive and defensive. The defense forced IU to change their routes having to resort to routes over the middle of the field that took a sec or so longer to run. This allowed the pass rush to get to the QB. The offense went back to using downfield crossing routes that allowed the speedy OSU receivers to run themselves open with good passing angles for Barrett.

I was disappointed with the first half play calling. I thought that maybe Ed Warinner was calling the plays remotely. I am still not a fan of swinging the ball horizontally as opposed to down field action. I was about to put my fist through the TV in the first half if I saw another pass behind the line of scrimmage. I can understand that once in a while, but after a half of not working, you would expect to try something a little different.

All in all, I think Indiana will be a pretty good team this year, but they need to find a running game. I think they will give the better teams they play a good game, and should win their share of games against lesser teams.

I don't know that tOSU is worthy of their #2 ranking, but we'll see how they do against Oklahoma next weekend. They cannot afford a slow start against them. I know this game was as much about getting the kinks out as anything, but let's hope they have.

I came away impressed by the Indy QB, Lagow (sp?).  His line offered no resistance to the Buckeye front and he got the ball out in 2ish seconds routinely.  He fired some darts right where they had to be.  Didn't go their way in the 2nd half obviously, but I thought he looked pretty good when he had any help.

I'd take him on my team, but then, that's not saying much.
