Title: 2024 Northwestern Offseason Thread
Post by: 847badgerfan on April 11, 2024, 08:24:42 AM
I don't expect this thread to get too much play, but there is no other place to put this. Kind of an oopsie that the AD didn't find a home for his team before they started ripping their stadium part.

Lots of gale storms in October/November. Could get ugly on The Lake if those happen.

Last fall there were a few, and there was one that produced 22 foot waves out of the NE.

That's a +/- 60 MPH wind.

I seem to remember a minimum seating capacity requirement around 40K for D1 schools back in the day.  I guess that requirement did not carry into FBS.

This is temporary. Probably be fine there.

I just looked it up. No current stadium size requirement, but they DO have to average 15K attendance over a rolling two-year period.

Incidentally I thought the same as you that there was a minimum stadium seating capacity requirement (and I think there was), but I had thought it was 35K, which this new stadium would just barely clear.

It's not clear to me if NW has finalized any plans for NW home games in 2024.

Its one thing to use temporary facilities along the lakefront for things like Lacrosse,  but that could be bad look for NW home football games.  I think one thing NW may still be waiting for is the exact dates of the NFL home games in 2024.  Rumor has it that Soldier Field is trying to charge high rents,  but also the Bears and Fire get first choice of dates.

If I had to guess,  if the temporary lakefront plan does not work out the backup plan will be for NW to play it's home football games at the following

Miami—oh,  Aug31.  My guess this game will get moved to Sun Sep1 and will be played at Soldier Field

Duke, Sep7,  SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, IL

EIU,  Sep 14,  SeatGeek Stadium

Indiana,  Oct5,  SeatGeek Stadium

Wisc,  Oct19,  Lambau Field in Green Bay,  Wisc

Ohio St,  Nov16,  Wrigley Field,  Homecoming

Illinois,  Nov 30,  Soldier Field

It would have to be FBS. Most FCS stadiums are nowhere near that. Take SUU, for example.

Although it does appear as though the portion of the grandstands containing the press boxes would have been installed around the time they moved up to FCS in the 20-ots, seemingly to reach some sort of minimum required capacity for FCS.

It is done. They are playing on the Lakefront with a temporary stadium.

They failed on this. They should have had everything in line before they wrecked Ryan Field. Instead, they are at the mercy of everyone with a stadium, and they were all asking too much.

Lambeau actually could have happened, but their big donors were not about to give Wisconsin a home game. That's where the money came from to build the temporary facility on The Lake.

Well,  the most recent article just says most of the football games will be played at the temporary stadium,  but it is not sure all 7 games will be,.  For the 3 OOC games, they probably won't get a lot of fans anyway, and the weather will be nice in Sep,  so might as well play those 3 games at the temporary stadium.

I predict Ohio St will still be at Wrigley Field since it's late enough in the year to be after the Cubs are done, and the game will bring a lot of fans.

Bret Belima is on record that he does not like Wrigley,  which makes me think the Illinois game will be at Soldier Field on Thanksgiving weekend.  The students  will all be home that weekend anyway.  Plus Soldier Field is built to handle cold weather if it is cold that day.

For Wisconsin,  that game should bring a lot of fans.  They need a larger stadium for that game.  If not Lambau,  then Soldier Field makes the most sense to me.

The other Big Ten game is Indiana.  Previously NW had confirmed that was going to be at SeatGeek Stadium.  But Bridgeview is actually not that close to Evanston.  So I doubt they would have got many fans at SeatGeek.  So they might as well play Indiana at the temporary stadium.

Anyway, that's my prediction.  The Ohio St,  Illinois and Wisc games will not be played at the temporary stadium.  We will see.

Wouldn't surprise me to see OSU and Wisconsin AD's pony up to play in a larger stadium and take a percentage of the gate. I don't know about Illinois, and I don't think NU gives a crap about what Bert thinks. ;)

https://nusports.com/news/2024/5/15/northwestern-announces-2024-football-schedule

Northwestern officially announced the location of its 7 home games today.

It's last 2 home games in November against Ohio St and Illinois will both be played at Wrigley Field.

It's first 5 home games will be played at the temporary field in Evanston.  Miami-Oh,  Duke, EIU,  Indiana,  and Wisc.

Of these the one that really surprised me was Wisconsin.  I thought for sure,  they would try to play that game in a bigger stadium.

They should play every game on that practice field in the micro-stadium.
They have been for years.

WRT Wrigley, I assume that it is about the Baseball schedule:

Northwestern "hosts" Wisconsin on October 19 then has road games at Iowa and Purdue on October 26 and November 2 then a week off (11/9) then "hosts" Ohio State on November 16.

MLB Schedule:

That game against Wisconsin is in the midst of the LCS and only a week after the end of the Divisional Series.  Obviously that wouldn't work if the Cubs made it to the NCLS but even if they lost in the Divisional Series that would be an awfully quick turnaround to get Wrigley ready for football in a week.

The Ohio State game is so late that even if the Cubs ended up hosting a WS Game 7, they would still have two full weeks to get Wrigley ready for the football game and of course the NU/IL game is two weeks after that.

Back before they built Jacobs Field in Cleveland, the Browns and Indians used to both play in Cleveland Municipal Stadium but it was HUMONGOUS so it wasn't all that difficult.  Still, I remember as a kid watching Browns Games where the base path was visible on the field.  They just striped over it with yard lines and switched sports.  It isn't as easy for Wrigley where it isn't really big enough for football and they don't do it all the time.

The Miami OH (8/31), Dook (9/7), and EIU (9/14) "home" games are during the MLB regular season:

Indiana (10/5) is the first day of the MLB Divisional Series and only six days after the Cubs' last regular season home game (9/29 vs Reds).

That just leaves Wisconsin (10/19), Ohio State (11/16), and Illinois (11/30).  The Ohio State and Illinois games are after MLB and they are already scheduled at Wrigley.

The only game left to consider is Wisconsin and (see above) that one is in the midst of the MLB Playoffs.  I would guess that if they suck this year, the Wisconsin game will get moved to Wrigley as soon as the Cubs are eliminated from the MLB Playoffs.

  • September 29:  Last day of the regular season
  • October 1-3:  Wildcard
  • October 5-12:  Divisional Series

The Miami OH (8/31), Dook (9/7), and EIU (9/14) "home" games are during the MLB regular season:
  • On 8/31 when Northwestern plays Dook the Cubs will be playing the penultimate game of a long road swing but they host the Pirates at Wrigley two days later on Monday, September 2.
  • On 9/7 when Northwestern plays Dook the Cubs will be hosting the Yankees at Wrigley.
  • On 9/14 when Northwestern plays EIU the Cubs will be in Colorado but the Cubs have home games six days earlier (9/8 vs Yankees) and two days later (9/16 vs Athletics).

Now that it's published, Wisconsin would have to approve that move.

I suspect they would as they could bring more fans.

I assumed that, but who would object?  I mean, Wisconsin has a lot of fans in the Chicagoland area anyway and Wrigley is an institution.  Honestly the Ohio State/Northwestern game being at Wrigley makes me want to go to Chicago but I can't with four little kids.

I'd consider it if they were playing at Sox Park.

Wrigley is a dump.

FWIW:
Demand at Wrigley appears to be sky-high.  Here are Ohio State's 2024 games arranged by the "get in" price per the Worldwide leader:

The 11 Illinois games not played at Wrigley range from $5 (vs CMU) to $54 (vs Michigan) but the game against Northwestern at Wrigley is $130.

It is similar for the Wildcats.  The Ohio State game at Wrigley is almost twice as expensive as their second highest ($173 for vs Wisconsin) and almost five times as expensive as their game in Ann Arbor ($66).

Obviously some of this is that Wiconsin and Ohio State bring a lot more fans than most opponents but I think getting to see a game at Wrigley is an added draw that is propping up the price for the games played there.

Understand here that you have a much different perspective than the average Ohio State fan who might travel to Chicago.
