Title: End of the 4-team CFP era, some stats
Post by: medinabuckeye1 on December 04, 2023, 10:35:26 AM
In the 10 years (2014-2023) of the CFP a total of 75 different teams have been ranked in at least one of the final polls.  Below they are sorted first by total number of appearances then by average ranking (when they were ranked).

First a comment on my school.  We've discussed this many times here so it will not surprise regular visitors but Ohio State's long-term consistency is astounding.  Even in this ten-year sample, Ohio State already emerges as the most consistent.  The Buckeyes are one of only three teams to be ranked in all 10 final CFP polls along with Alabama and Clemson.  Note however that Ohio State's worst ranking was #7 (twice, 2015 and 2023) while Bama's worst was #13 and Clemson was ranked #7 or worse four times.  Ie, Ohio State is the only school ranked in the top-7 of every single one of the final rankings and no other school has been ranked in the top-12 of every final ranking.

That is sorta a brag and sorta not.  It is nice that Ohio State has been basically "in the mix" every single year but on the other hand they "only" have five CFP appearances and one CFP Title to show for it compared to eight CFP appearances for the Tide and six for the Tigers with both of them also having multiple Championships.

Anyway, here are the 75 teams:
Teams appearing in all 10 final rankings:

No teams appeared in exactly nine final rankings.
Teams appearing in eight of the 10 final rankings:
Teams appearing in seven of the 10:
No teams appeared in exactly six of the final rankings.
Teams appearing in five of the 10 final rankings:
Teams appearing in four of the 10 final rankings:
Teams appearing in three of the 10 final rankings:
Teams appearing in two of the 10 final rankings:
Teams appearing in one of the 10 final rankings:

Teams in bold are currently in the B1G, teams underlined and italicized will be next year.

So you are the first to break the news of Wisconsin departing?

Yep, they are gone, you heard it here first.

Seriously, oops, sorry.  My mistake, fixed it.

I'm sort of glad that Texas finally got in on the 4-team playoff era.  We'd made it to the MNC game during the BCS/Alliance era, and of course we'd played for it during the Old Bowl era.  Woulda been sort of a shame not to have participated in the 4-team playoff era, as brief as it's been.
