Mark Stoops, from Kentucky. To A&M. A fine coach, no doubt. Not sure how I feel about it. Whatever, mostly. Get back with you in 5 years I guess.
PS..the last coach from Kentucky we hired was Bear Bryant.

Close the book on Kentucky mattering.
-
I think he's a solid coach, maybe he can do more with A&M level talent.

In 1981, Dooley was offered a million dollars to go to Auburn, which tempted him. His kids apparently talked him out of it.
There was a bumper sticker "Some folks won't go to Auburn for a million bucks". It was a lot in those days.

Wow. I can’t understand how these things leak before they’re official and then how they fall thru at the last minute. Not gonna say I was impressed, but in the world of hits and misses, nobody knows nothing.
-
I think "insiders" hear something that really is tentative and want to seem important to a reporter. They probably heard "We're offering Stoops, and it's money he can't turn down." The first part is true.
-
If we haven’t by now figured out we can’t money whip our way to winning we never will. There’s no guarantee with any coach. Even Nick Saban.
Know what I’d do? Get rid of the old men, nobody over 40. Maybe a 40ish coordinator would be ok for OC or DC, and the DL coach can be over 40.
No more than $5 MM total for the coaching staff as a whole, with bonuses for winning. Base salary, bonus for winning the SEC or whatever pod we’re in. Bonuses for making the CFP. No more unearned dollars for inflated ego coaches.
Then we should do something unprecedented. The Athletic budget should send any excess dollars back to the students. At least $10 MM per year. Build it into the budget. Because if we care so much about football we can care about the students that support it.

I think with few exceptions, it turns out better to hire a DC or OC than another HC. It can turn out worse obviously, but I'd look for someone at the second level.
Cheaper for one thing. And of course, a HC that does well at a place like UK might not "fit" with a place like A&M.

nothing can be trusted until you start hearing sound bites and of team meetings etc. rumor reported as fact is no longer the exception
matt painter was “reported” as our next hoops coach a decade ago. that’s just our ex at this point many schools have them.
i have seen the rumors as to why stoops didn’t happen and whether one is true or not doesn’t matter beyond confirming the veracity of my first two sentences. the media sucks. we now have to pay close attn to word choice: “blah blah expected to be blah blah” = fos & maybe

Some the names I've seen projected for the job aren't any better than Jimbo maybe worse.
A&M should be looking at Jamey Chadwell (46 years old) the guy TN should have hired. He's a program builder and a winner everywhere he's been. Turned Coastal Carolina into a champion in the Sun Belt Conference and went 12-0 at Liberty his first year in Conference USA.
East TN guy played QB at East TN State not a Yankee, so he knows what football is to the SEC and their fans.
-
The Duke guy?
-
Elko. He was our DC in 2020. Very highly regarded by fans and players. Did a good job at duke.
-
I think he'll be good at A&M. He's the guy the AD should have targeted from the beginning, IMO, and then they could have avoided the messiness of the past 24 hours.
-
did a great job at duke. seems like a good hire to me.
-
Heck, if the guy can actually coach and get players here that won't get the boot in the first year. I'm kinda hoping he'll keep most of our D staff, and maybe even turn Petrino loose on the Offense.
Jimbo was a egotistic, pompous asshole. Maybe Elko is down to earth. Who the heck knows? We'll find out in 3 years.
-
I think retaining Petrino would be a good move. Elko being a defensive guy would likely cede most everything offensive to Petrino, which would be a big plus, imo.
Obviously I'm rooting for this hire to fail spectacularly, but objectively I think there is a lot of upside here.
