Title: The Ghost Of Harbaugh Has Arrived in Happy Valley (SOC 11/11/23)
Post by: MaximumSam on November 10, 2023, 06:04:51 PM
Fellas, I kind of like this Friday night posting. I've got a fire going, I'm sipping some wine, getting ready to watch some real live basketball tonight. On Peacock! What a country! And my wife is bringing home dinner. And hopefully will keep the kids occupied.

Anyways, we've got the Harbaugh suspension, we've got BRAD AKA BART making a spicy meal for himself, we've got three good basketball games on tonight. Nothing says middle aged like being excited to not go anywhere on a Friday night.

I've got some split chicken breasts in the brine, for grilling later. My wife is out now looking for some seafood. I've got a chuck roast ready to sear on the grill and then take a bath in the crock pot. Gramma's tomato salad on the docket. Mashed spuds. Asparagus.

Won't need to cook for a few days.

We're headed to a different Persian restaurant before the symphony, it's across the street from the Arts Center, called "Divan".  Menu looks interesting, it's in an old house they redid informally called "The Castle".  I dunno about lunch, probably heated up leftover something.

We had steak tacos last night with the rest of the flatiron I did earlier, they were delicious.  I will be using this baking powder thing as tenderizer on steak from here on.  I like to use the leftover steak to make beef stew but the tacos were great, my wife's idea.

Drizzly here and 60 degrees, not that nice out.

Atlanta Persian restaurant (divanatlanta.com) (https://www.divanatlanta.com/)

I still bemoan our lack of French anything near us.  There is a place in Decatur that is said to be very good.

If you're ever down here with a hankering for fine dining, I'd suggest this place:

Bacchanalia — Star Provisions (https://www.starprovisions.com/bacchanalia)

Parent Bingo Night. Etc ...fundraiser at my kid's High school tonight.   It's quite a fun event they have.

I'll make something earlier on the grill though.   Probably some kabobs of some sort.

the marinated Iowa chops will go in the air fryer with some quartered russet taters and onions

it's too easy, they all go in together and come out together - about 20 minutes
I can relax and enjoy the salad

we have that hot pot thing we barely use.

Put up the Christmas Tree last night. With assistance from the Pets.

Hit the gym already. Will soon drive up to my brother's to catch Michigan-Penn State. Probably miss 1st quarter. At some point later in the day brother wants to get a Veterans Day meal at Applebee's or Chili's. Surely more games airing there.

Sherrone Moore looks shook and his play calling is booty cheeks so far.

Michigan needs to use some screens and quick hitters to bite an overly aggressive PSU defense.

And Donovan Edwards needs to line up in the backfield then motion out wide and they need to get him the ball in the passing game. He’s an absurd mismatch on a safety or backer. He hasn’t even seen the field once yet.

Needed to keep up the three yards and a cloud of dust play calling there. We don’t have the players to get contested catches that close.

Yes- and trying to go against W Johnson.  One of the best corners in CFB.

on the other hand- they almost got lucky with it and it shows they are willing to try it- so not as easy to crowd the run.

We host 30 people for thanksgiving so it always was the weekend after. We had a pretty shaky holiday season last year and the kids didn’t really get to experience a very good Christmas. So this year I started decorating for a Christmas 2 weeks ago.

the family coming over for thanksgiving is going to think it’s odd, but it’s honestly been nice to have Christmas trees up this soon.

Speaking of pets though... We're entertaining a houseguest today.

In-laws are going to the NHRA drags. So we met them for happy hour yesterday evening and brought Lenny home.

They should be coming this afternoon to get him, and then it'll be time for us to cooks some braised short rib and mashed potatoes. I bought 5+ lbs of short ribs... Hope it's enough for 2 of us lol ;-)

Maybe I should vacuum seal and freeze some of them.

Alright I'll give you a pass, this time. :)

Kids always come first and providing a top notch Christmas experience to them, is a rewarding experience, as a parent.

My kids used to hate my rule about no Christmas music until the day after Thanksgiving.  Nowadays, they've begun enforcing it themselves.  They're both in band and so are already playing Christmas music getting ready for their winter concerts, but they both tell me that it makes them feel awkward and unsettled.

They, too #RespectTheHoliday

How do you do your short ribs?
Cut up one medium sweet onion
Cut up two medium carrots (skin removed)
Cut up two medium celery stalks, including leaves (peeled if needed)
Cut up a half head of garlic

Add all of the above to a food processor, adding a little canola oil for lubrication - process until you have a puree.

Season the short ribs and sear in a lightly oiled Le Creuset (or similar), remove when seared on all sides.

Add the veggie puree along with a small can of tomato paste. Stir to combine. Sautee until lightly browned - not burnt - maybe 5-6 minutes. Return the short ribs to the mixture. Add two cups of beef stock and two cups of wine - preferably Chianti Classico. Bring to a boil. Add thyme bouquet garni (tied).

Cover and set in a 350 degree oven for 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally. The ribs should be fork tender.

Remove the meat and the thyme, and stir using a stick blender, if available (get one!!). Place on high heat. Add corn starch slurry to thicken - but do not over-thicken.

Serve with mashed potatoes and asparagus, if available.

Enjoy!!

Dumb calls always take the easy points(PAT) .Buckeyes went for 6 on the goal line late in the 3rd vs PSU,not only didn't get it but got the back up QB Brown injured take the freakin' gimmes never know how things will shake out vs evenly matched teams

Can't wait for Michigan to score a FG to go up 17-9, leaving Franklin chasing those points.

Correct the seasoning of the gravy as needed. Also, in MY preference, I add a lot of crushed red chili flakes to the puree.

How do you do your short ribs?
Season and sear in a Dutch oven, set aside. Cook down veggies in the pot, and wine and beef stock and deglaze, add back the ribs and some herbs, then cover and braise in the oven.

This time is a Bobby Flay recipe, but all of these recipes are substantially similar...

Yep, they are. Mine is largely based on this recipe from Anne Burrell, who is vastly underrated in my opinion.

This is a quote from Penn State’s Bio page for OC Mike Yurcich:

“Penn State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich will look to do what he feels needs to be done in order to put the Penn State offense in the best possible position to win.”

Like what are you doing to set up your offense for success, Mike?

Predictable play calling? Running up the middle into an 8 man front on every 1st & 2nd down? Not coaching Allar through progressing to a 3rd and 4th read?

Penn State’s offense plays like an offense held back by timid and sterile coaching.

Actually the refs have been spot on, IMO.

I thought it was pass interference because he was face guarding— didn’t turn to look for the ball, until after it was already passed him

The Michigan offsides call, I called that before they even snapped it. Harrell was lined up way off sides, but they didn’t show the right angle when they went to look at it on the television.

PSU getting a lot of criticism here- and rightly so.

But you have to give credit to the Michigan players and coordinators. It’s not easy to come into this environment and play a game with no turnovers and very few meaningful penalties.

And, they forced Penn State to play the game under Michigan’s terms

Penn State, or anybody that’s ever going to beat Michigan would have to get some points on the board and get a lead and get them out of the game plan.

Unapologetic water carriers for Michigan football like Joel Klatt will use UM’s win to go around trumpeting how sign stealing wasn’t that big of an advantage for Michigan because “see, Michigan beat Penn State without knowing their signs!”

My response to that is if there was ever an offense where knowing the signs doesn’t provide an edge, it’s Penn State’s determinedly predictable offense.

Since they went East-West, Wisconsin has won the West 4 times, Northwestern and Iowa twice each, and Purdue once.  5 of the 6 times either Wisconsin or Northwestern went, OSU won the East.  The three times neither Wisconsin or Northwestern won, OSU didn't.  So I guess get ready for Michigan-Iowa

They just suck. Period.

Both coordinators need to be gone, and about 40 players recruiting by the old (lazy) staff, who also suck.

I never like to say I want to see someone get fired, but man, if Baylor cuts Aranda loose, come on back. Open arms await.

Agree. Replays showed the QB dropped with knee and ball on endzone side.

I don’t know why it seems to be the case but refs are more averse to calling a safety than anything else.

Franklin will be fired after the season or his boss should
nah. he's going to go 10-2 regular season and if he gets a favorable bowl match-up he'll go 11-2 and then it's going to be hard to fire a guy who is 11-2 every single year.

he won't get fired until Penn State starts going 7-5/8-4 in the reg season imo.

Yes, more or less.  Iowa has clinched at least a tie for first place in the West.  Iowa still needs to win at least 1 of it's final 2 games to clinch the division outright and a trip to the Big Ten CCG.

Strangely enough I would say that both ILL and Neb still have realistic chances to win the West because they both have one of their 2 games left against Iowa.  Wouldnt it be bizarre if Illinois comes back and wins the division with their backup QB making all these great plays in the clutch?

Coaching is also about fit.  I'm starting to wonder if Fickell at a P5.job is a bad fit.  That's not a knock.  I don't know that Kirby Smart could go to a Group of 5 school and reach a CFP (without his current clout).

Some coaches are good at getting elite talent to gel.  Some coaches are good at mining 2 star talent into something.  And levels in between.  Next year is a big prove it year for me with Fickell.  He was great at Cincinnati.  But he has massively underachieved in his first two seasons at the P5 level

I almost don't put any weight on a coach's first year. So much of coaching, especially for a coach like Fickell, is developing your program. He went 4-8 his first year at Cincinnati.

The good news is dinner was really good, tried a new place.  The better news is the concert was fantastic.  I was checking my phone for the best news during intermission, of course.

I thought UGA would win something like 34-17.  Bowers is back.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Iowa isn't anywhere near dominant. Their offense is so bad that they could lose any given week.

They are 5-2 and two games ahead of a five-way tie for second between:
Iowa beat NU and UW and lost to MN. In the event of a two-way tie, they would lose to all except NU or UW.

The number of teams that mathematically could tie for the B1G-W title is limited because a lot of these teams play each other:
Iowa can clinch next week with a win but if they lose it gets interesting.

If Iowa loses to Illinois:
It is only complicated if Iowa loses out so all of the following assumes that and that the team in question wins out (because otherwise they wouldn't tie IA).

Don't let the recruiting rankings fool you. The cupboard is bare in Madison.

I suspect Franklin may be nearing his exit at PSU, not quite yet, but another quasi-OK year might do it.  They beat the teams they should, usually, and then lose to the top two.  Is that enough?

This is why he reminds me of Richt.

His speed of return is not unprecedented of course.

What is Tightrope Surgery? - The Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Center (footankledc.com) (https://www.footankledc.com/news/what-is-tightrope-surgery/109)

After a syndesmotic injury is diagnosed, a decision on surgery is made with the patient. Sometimes, these injuries can be treated nonoperatively with an extended period of limited weight-bearing immobilization in a cast or a boot. Oftentimes, surgery is recommended for athletes in an effort to shorten the rehab and return to play timeline. Previously, this surgery involved using 2 metal screws to stabilize the fibula to the tibia. These screws are rigid and would have to be removed at a later date, thus requiring a second surgery. The tightrope allows the syndesmosis to be stabilized in a FLEXIBLE manner, keeping the natural motion between the tibia and fibula. Since the fixation is flexible, there is no need for a second surgery. Rehab may begin much faster and return to play may happen as soon as 4-6 weeks. This timeline was made famous by former Alabama QB Tua, who played in the national championship game just 28 days after surgery on his syndesmosis.

UGA lacks the DL they've had in the past two seasons.

don't agree with that. UGA is obviously really good and a top tier team in 2023, but they are not quite what they were the last 2-3 years. they just don't have that insane front 7 on defense like they did with all those mutants like Jordan Davis, Travon Walker, and Jalen Carter the past 2-3 years.

I think Beck is also a terrific young QB but he's yet to prove himself the way Stetson did in the biggest moments on the brightest stage. Don't know how a guy is going to respond until they are there and they do it. Stetson clearly didn't have the elite NFL size + raw arm talent that Beck has, but he was just a "gamer" and he also had the ability to escape pressure and make huge plays with his feet that Beck just doesn't have.

I don't think there are 5-6, I think there are probably 3-4. Not really buying into Oregon or Washington, Pac12 hype is just hype. They don't play any defense whatsoever in that conference at all. Both those teams have huge ? marks on defense imo.

I was almost 100% sold on Texas, but man they are starting to scare me, not quite sure they are there. Obviously hugely improved from a season ago, but not quite there imo. BAMA has the defense but Milroe is still a huge question mark- never know what you'll get out of him throwing the ball. If Nick just lets him run it 30 times a game and throw it only 10 they might be there.

I think UGA, Michigan, Ohio State, and Florida State are probably the 4 teams right now that could go win the natty imo.

agree with the bolded part. only reason why UGA isn't a mortal lock right now to win it imo.

Ags are getting desperate with Texas and OU coming into the conference next year, and nothing to show for their 10-year headstart.

Even so, I didn't think they'd pull the trigger on Jimbo.  It's not just his salary, it's all of the assistants (that they JUST extended), and then hiring the new coach and paying any potential buyout there, and then hiring a new staff and paying any potential buyout there.

The total cost isn't a mere $77M, it's going to be over $100M, with the first $30M-$40M to be executed immediately.

Pffft. SEC is just tough, even for blue bloods.

Neither OU nor Texas ever had to play in a conference with more than 1-2 equals including each other, now they’re going to compete in a conference of at least 5-6 equals or better. If anything this makes things worse because now we start over at just the same time as the going gets tougher.

Meh, original B12 had Nebraska in the midst of its 90s juggernaut run.  That's 3 right there.  SEC always has a couple of excellent schools at the top carrying water, but never 5-6 at the same time, that's laughable and a pure myth fueled by ESECPN.

Anyway, none of that is here nor there, with respect to Jimbo.

Yeah.....we take turns.
Unlike the Big Ten (UM, OSU forever), Big 8 (OU, UNL forever), Pac (USC forever), ACC (FSU, Clemson forever).
The SEC has depth.  It's not stagnant.
Alabama (forever, minus the late-90s)
Auburn (2004, 2010, 2013)
Florida (90s, 2006, 2008)
LSU (2003, 2007, 2019)
Tennessee (90s)
Georgia (now)

Just learn to take turns.

The point was that neither Texas nor OU ever had to compete with many top teams. In the Big 12 it was OU, Texas, and for the first 5-6 years Nebraska. So they only had maybe 2 peer programs at worst.

In the SEC there will be 4 teams right off the bat that are equal or better. Bama, Georgia, Florida, and LSU. Edging right under them you have Auburn and UTenn. I base these numbers on championships played and won in this century. UTenn is listed simply because they are still a blue blood. Auburn has won as many MNC’s this century as OU and UT and came close to winning another.

You know the difference between the Big 12 teams like KSU or oSu and 2nd tier teams like Auburn and others?  2nd tier SEC teams can win national championships.

Again, I am against this move unless it was apparent that Fisher was really just mailing it in.

I just don’t see how this has anything with OU and UT entering the conference next year. We probably won’t even play OU for several years and I’ll trade Bama, Auburn, or Georgia for UT and OU any day.

You ever look up Big 8 championships ?  It’s literally all Nebraska and OU, for like 50-60 years. And if it is anybody else, it’s a shared title. At least the SWC had almost all the teams winning a conference title once in a while.

Just going by what I hear from my Ag inlaws and other Ag friends.  They think Jimbo is a failed experiment and didn't want to enter next year's new SEC featuring the entrance of Texas and OU, with him at the helm.

They don't speak for all ags of course, you can certainly have a differing opinion, but that is absolutely a real and stated opinion of many ags, indeed the overwhelming majority of ag fans I know in real life.

Anyway, I won't say I think it's premature because I don't think Jimbo was ever going to do any better at A&M, but the timing is surprising given just how much it's going to cost TAMU.

Texas & OU joining and slotting (on the whole, on the average) above A&M (no offense) with a HC that's had 6 seasons without winning even a division title.
The closest A&M came was the covid season where they went 9-1, but were 28 points worse than Alabama.

They never really got close to winning anything under him.  So yeah, giving him all the dollars was stupid and letting him go makes sense.

Solved: Are contributions to college athletic funds deductable if priority points are included? (intuit.com) (https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/retirement/discussion/are-contributions-to-college-athletic-funds-deductable-if-priority-points-are-included/00/615514)

The new law essentially replaces the 80 percent in the 80/20 rule with 0 percent. This means that, as of Jan. 1, 2018, donors who make a contribution to or for the benefit of a college or university in exchange for the right to purchase tickets or seating at an athletic event in the university’s stadium can no longer take a charitable deduction on 80 percent of the contribution.

The law clearly states that, “no charitable deduction will be allowed for any amount” of these contributions.

Right.  If you get tickets in exchange, then it's no longer tax deductible.  You're free to make direct contributions to university athletic programs any time you like and receive tax benefits, just as you have always been-- as long as you're not receiving tickets as part of the exchange.

hah, if you're an oil baron donating 10 million to pay off Jimbo's contract, you might have the means or other options to get tickets

so, skybox suites aren't tax deductible? oh well

If they are a 503(c), it's deductable, unless you receive benefits.  I wouldn't think paying off a coach would be deductable.

But money is fungible, maybe you donate to a scholarship fund somewhere.

Right, so receiving tickets, or even receiving priority placement for selection of tickets, is no longer deductible.

I suppose paying $77M to a departing coach might be deductible if the entity is 501C3.  There's no direct tangible benefit being offered in exchange, as far as I can tell.  Just the satisfaction of wasting tens of millions of dollars to get yourself out of a terrible deal and move on to the next guy?

$19 million up front is coming from the donor fund.  The remaining $7.2 annually is coming from the athletics budget

Don't forget the buyout of assistant coaches (OC and DC were just extended), the hiring of the new coach, and the hiring of new assistant coaches.

The immediate outlay is a conservative $30M-$40M, and it could reach $50M, that must be executed ASAP.

Moreso with position coaches.  I think most MSU fans want the new coach to retain Courtney Hawkins as WR coach.  They've been solid, but he's been probably the best recruiter on staff.  He's an MSU alum.

O-coordinator was retained when Pelini was hired

of course Bo had no previous head coach experience and the AD Osborne thought the offense was good enough

I think it was Shawn Watson

From what I've seen, when the administration forces the head coach to either hire someone specific, or retain someone specific, it typically ends poorly.

And I'd imagine that ANY coach that's agreeing to go into the current situation at A&M, is going to insist on complete control of their entire staff, including all hiring and firing decisions.  That's pretty much bare minimum table stakes for a transition like the one A&M is bringing upon themselves.

Well if you look  on Texags, the candidates are: Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Kirby Smart, Dabo Swinney, Jimmy Johnson, Mike Ditka, and Knute Rockne

:)

Realistically I believe Elko is a candidate, perhaps the prime candidate.  And if they're smart they'll be looking at Traylor at UTSA.  Not splashy but he's a good coach and excellent recruiter within the state of Texas.

He doesn't really contribute to the athletics side.

Instead he founds entirely new schools of medicine, and builds numerous top-notch hospitals.

As much as I'd love him to drop a cool bil on the the football team, I think the work he's actually doing for the university and the community, is more important.

I'm not sure I follow, but if you're referring to Dell, there's no mandate of course, it's simply a matter of how he chooses to spend his money and support the community.  He COULD support the athletic side, but he chooses not to, and that's totally okay.  He's done incredible philanthropic work for the community both through support for the university's medical programs, as well as through his foundations, and building some incredibly top notch hospitals.  The company also matches dollar for dollar up to $10,000, any donations employees make, to approved charities (which is all of the major ones and tons of smaller ones, too).  And the company also allows employees to spend company time volunteering for any of those approved charities as well.  The charity work and community outreach, around the globe, is one of the things I'm very proud of, for the company I work for.

honestly would be unfair if he started pouring in money.

Texas already has the richest and most giving base of any helmet. They don’t need Dell’s money.

I actually agree.  As nice as basically "unlimited funds" might seem to be, I'm pretty sure we'd screw it all up royally. We already seem to waste a ton of booster money, I'd hate to throw any of Michael Dell's money into the mix.  It's being used better on much more important endeavors.

I agree Lanning is unlikely to bolt, but competing in the B1G will get tougher for them.

Dan Lanning will most certainly bolt for the first big SEC/Southern job that comes calling.

Why?

The SEC Coaching ranks are the ultimate personality cult for someone with the Type A, combative, hyper aggressions of Lanning to strive for as a hardboiled coaching destiny.

No matter how good Lanning is appearing at Oregon, I DON’T believe Lanning will be much of a step up from Mark Stoops at Kentucky or Shane Beamer at South Carolina.

One reason to point out is how Oregon conversely makes coaches look better than they turn out elsewhere. I say ‘conversely’ because a resource-rich program like Texas A&M can be held back by a plateaued coach like Jimbo Fisher. But rarely is this dynamic reversed where it’s the program that uplifts and gets the most out of the coach, not the other way around.

We’re witnessing a decade of coaches moving on from Oregon and never finding the success at higher profile opportunities that they had as Ducks – Chip Kelly at UCLA/Eagles, Mark Helfrich (never mind), Willie Taggart at Florida State, Mario Cristobal at Miami.

Meanwhile, Oregon remains a consistently fine program.

It's all weird to me, I saw someone claiming that about 20% of coaching hires are "successful" for major programs.  They hired Jimbo to be a great success, and it didn't work out.  OK, fine, but maybe the problem is elsewhere?  Do you have someone in mind who is clearly better?

I know they can throw dollars around at will, but time is a different commodity.  They could well have an 80% chance of firing the FNG in five years.  He might even do WORSE.  Or he does OK, then has a couple promising seasons let's say, goes 10-3 then 11-2, in years 2 and 3 and they write him a BIG contract for 7 years and then they drop back to 9-4 and 8-5.

And if you get into the fire and hire pattern like Tennessee, you really start to thrash about, and I'm hearing some disgruntlement now with Heupel.

I worried about this when Richt was fired, but at least they had "their guy" lined up ahead of time.  Richt was doing OK.  I didn't know of course if Smart would do better, I guess he's turned out decently well.

It's a rather risky proposition to fire a coach who is doing "pretty well" when you think you should be in the title hunt nearly every year.  Not many programs can sustain that, and some that get tired of 9-4 find an FNG who ends up averaging 8 wins.

Take Florida, they are in a bind here already in Year 2.  I don't think the change it up, but Napier clearly is "on the clock".

When Purdue had Joe Tiller, he was getting into his later years and there was a cadre of fans that wanted to get rid of him. He put together a program that was a consistent bowl program, could beat up on the OOC patsies and the bottom of the Big Ten, but would get routinely beaten down by the power programs of the conference. That was good for 7 to 9 wins a year.

A bunch of fans wanted him gone to find a coach who could take us to "the next level".

Well, when he left, we got one who took us to the next level. It was one level down. We booted him and got one that we thought would do better. He took us to a truly new level--he was the worst-performing coach in Purdue history.

I generally think it's a bad idea to fire a successful coach in the hopes that you find one even more successful. Certainly seemed to work for UGA, but hasn't really seemed to be a consistently good strategy when tried elsewhere.

need the coach first and foremost OBVIOUSLY.....but also need the recruiting base + facilities + booster/NIL $$$ base to truly be in the title hunt every year. only a handful of schools have that.

probably only UGA, Bama, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, USC, LSU, and Texas have that.

probably only UGA, Bama, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, USC, LSU, and Texas have that.

Probably add A&M and Oregon in there, and subtract LSU.  LSU doesn't have the booster/NIL$ to compete in this new landscape.  I hope I'm wrong but the early trends have been terrible.

The resources A&M has at their disposal makes their lack of accomplishments that much more perplexing.  I blame it on being a cult.

I have no idea if the Dawgs have major NIL monies.  It's probably at least decent.  They have upgraded facilities a lot over the past decade (the stadium is the same size, but improvements on collateral items).

Alabama actually doesn't have a large NIL program.  Right now they have tons of momentum, tons of history, and tons of Alabama players in the NFL, which are all still important to recruits.

But going forward, it'll be interesting to see how well they can keep up.  NIL was always going to be a competitive disadvantage for Alabama which is why you've seen Saban so often in the news, either protesting it directly, or asking for severe curbs and caps on it.

On3's top 20 most ambitious NIL collectives - On3 (https://www.on3.com/nil/news/on3-top-20-most-ambitious-nil-collectives-year-2-tennessee-texas-am-oregon/)

Alabama not on the list, South Carolina is though.  Tenn leads it.  There isn't a ton of correlation between on field success and NIL ranking at this point.  UgA is "ethical" ....

14. Classic City (Georgia)
A registered LLC, the Classic City Collective (https://www.on3.com/nil/collectives/classic-city-collective-11/) does allow for Georgia (https://www.on3.com/teams/georgia-bulldogs/) boosters to donate. Run by CEO Matt Hibbs, the collective has prioritized finding outside revenue sources. A former football compliance officer at Georgia, Hibbs has helped secure corporate partnerships with Truist BankApotheos coffee roastery and The Players Lounge
In the last week, the collective has become the first to launch software (https://www.on3.com/nil/news/georgia-bulldogs-football-nil-collective-deals-classic-city-collective-firework-innovative-new-media/) that offers short-form videos that provide original content while overlaying advertisements from companies. It could be a significant revenue stream for athletes who promote companies.
Classic City has had to adjust on the fly like many in the space, but they’ve been able to do it at a high level.
“They’ve won back-to-back national championships, they don’t have to be the richest,” an SEC East competitor said. “They’re on it; they’re ethical.”

Keep in mind this list is only naming specific collectives at various schools which it deems to be the "most ambitious."  Texas has dozens of various  NIL collectives, but the TexasOne fund is very large and very ambitious, so it made the list.

Yeah sorry.  It's not that old.  I should have said something more like "parts of that article have become very outdated" which would have been more correct and more specific.

I just found it fascinating that A&M thought they could run an NIL collective through the same organization that runs their ticketing which is officially part of their athletic department.  There are some murky areas in the NIL laws but that one is clearly a conflict of interest and in most states-- including Texas-- is explicitly named as being illegal.  And yet they still went and tried to do it.

Here's where A&M should be at every damn year:

Win about 20-30% of the games vs Bama.  Right now we're about 2-12 or some such, with wins 10 years apart.  We should and can win more than that, especially games at home.

Win 40-60% of the games vs LSU.  Started off badly in the SEC, but I think we're about 50% over the last few years.

Only lose 20-30% of the games vs Miss St and Ole Miss.  More specifically, only lose to Miss State 10% of the time or less, and Ole Miss no more than 20% of the time.

Win 80+ % of the games vs Ark.  13/14 mission exceeded.

Split 50% of the games with Auburn at worst.

Never lose your buy games.  App State I'm looking at this one.

8 games should be the floor, a mediocre to bad season.  Should still win all of the Miss St/OM/Ark, lose to Bama and LSU, maybe lose the premiere OOC game (we're playing ND next season).  Go bowling.

If the SEC stayed in it's current state here's how A&M should really stack up.

When Bama comes to CS every third trip we should win at home and be in contention for the West title.  We haven't done ever.  When we won two years ago we were already out of contention.  It was nothing more than a fluke.

If we do that, we have a chance of taking the West assuming we can split the series with LSU.  Ark, OM, Miss St are nothing more than cannon fodder for the rest of the SEC.  Throw in our permanent opponent, SCar, which we've won 90+% of our games.

We should have won the West at least once every 7-12 years even when Bama is HOT.  Heck, LSU has won the West 3-4 times over the last dozen years even when they have fired coaches and had bad seasons in between.  Auburn has won a couple of times in the last decade.

9-3 is a mediocre year, 10-2 is a good one, 11-1 is a great one, and 12-0 is tops.  8-4 should not happen more than once per dozen, but we should be winning 9-10 games 60% of the time.

That strikes me as reasonable.  With the addition of UT and OU, there will be years with really tough schedules.  You could field a very good team and finish 10-2.

We won't play OU every year to my understanding.  I'll trade UT with Bama any day and twice on Sunday.  I think we're going to get LSU and UT every year, along with one of the Miss Schools.

I'd need to look it up, but I think Jimbo is close to 50% or under vs the Miss schools, and 0-3 vs Kiffin. Forget LSU and Bama, he can't even beat Miss St.

I think the SEC is eventually going to add a 9th game (once Disney pays for it) and at that point the scheduling will go to 3-6-6.

That's 3 "protected rivalries", and then you play 6 of the other 12 every two years, and then flip to the other 6 every two years.

For TAMU, I could see it being Texas, LSU, and...?  Not sure who the third is.  A Miss school maybe?

Texas' three protected rivals are easy enough, it should be sooners, ags, pigs.

I wonder how these collectives actually operate. Are they mostly there as support organizations to help a student-athlete financially once they're signed and on campus? Or are they going out there recruiting? And if they're going out recruiting, are they recruiting specific players at the behest of the coaching staffs (who identify and prioritize target players)? Or are they going out and just independently trying to work with recruits that have offers/etc?

I realize all that they really need is to make any of this stuff an arms-length transaction. But I wonder how much coordination is behind these guys...

I'm not so sure Tiller would have been that successful at a helmet. The type of teams he ran were perfect for teams with less talent who exploited a higher-variance strategy that--when it worked--could outperform their talent. But a cold day for a QB could derail that offense real quickly. It just so happened that he managed to get a future NFL hall-of-fame QB in Brees, followed by a career NFL journeyman in Orton. And that was coupled with an era in the Big Ten where teams were built around stopping 3-yards-and-a-cloud offensive strategies, and he spread everyone out 5 wide and said "let's see if your 4th best cover corner and your best cover LB can cover Vinny Sutherland/Dorien Bryant and Tim Stratton/Dustin Keller, sucka!"

But variance can be difficult for a helmet team. One bad day can be the difference between 12-0 and 11-1, and that difference can be the difference between a BCSCG berth and a "mere" NYD bowl. If you go for a low-variance strategy because you've simply got better players and grind your opponent into dust (see UM vs PSU second half), you limit the danger that mistakes turn into opponent points and suddenly you've been upset by the "Spoilermakers"...

I do think the game has changed, partly due to the changing of rules, and Tresselball or a Saban "get the best players at every position and a game manager at QB" are no longer going to get it done. And with the CFP and soon-to-be 12-team playoff, you maybe optimize for the highest offensive output you can get rather than the low-variance strategy to avoid a random loss--because a random loss no longer eliminates you. But those changes mostly really occurred post-Tiller.

Officially-- no interaction. :)

Unofficially-- Yeah, it's all just a bunch of smoke and mirrors to produce the illusion of an arms-length transaction.

Here's how I hear it probably, usually goes down, at least at the places that are at least TRYING to keep a facade of propriety.  Coaches go and recruit a kid.  They tell the kid, "look, from what I hear, recruits with your * ranking at your position, are typically getting $X per year."  Meanwhile they're confirming with the collective that once the recruit is on campus, that will indeed be the likely amount of money paid for the recruit's NIL.

These collectives aren't dumb, the deals are typically tied to required activities (be in this ad, or show up for this charity event, etc.) and they aren't ever-green, they're usually just for a year at a time.  So if a kid portals out after one year, he doesn't take 4 years worth of NIL money along with him.

Those are the specifics for the how the collectives tend to work, that is.

The REAL NIL deals are set up directly between Company Y and Recruit B, based entirely on perceived marketing benefit.  Things like Caleb Williams in the Dr. Pepper commercials, Quinn Ewers advocating a specific packaged tea brand, etc.  Those kids made those deals independently and would presumably retain them no matter where they went, unless of course, say, Ewers decided to transfer from Texas, to North Dakota State, where his expected marketing value would necessarily decrease, and the tea company could either cut him, or pay him less.

Agree 100%.
High variance at Purdue is great because it means that once in a while you'll take down tOSU. It sucks at tOSU because it means that once in a while you'll lose to Purdue. (Note that in the preceeding sentence tOSU and Purdue are more representative than specific).

I also agree about the coming 12-team playoff. With the four-team CFP the upcoming likely 11-0 vs 11-0 tOSU/M game is probably a CFP elimination game. Last year it turned out not to be but that is rare in the 4-team setting. In a 12-team CFP world, tOSU and Michigan would be locks already because even with back-to-back losses they'd still get in. That changes things. It puts more emphasis on peak performance (ceiling) and less emphasis on avoiding upsets (floor).

That billionaire probably gets very little ROI and hopefully is willing to urinate a bunch of $ down the drain in return for hopefully a few wins.

In our case, I wouldn't know, because to my knowledge LSU has no billionaire donors.  Even our multi-millionaire crowd is small and meager compared to the Texas' of the world.

I think the expectation for any team in the top 20 would be to compete for the MNC.  And there is a big difference between competing for a MNC and not competing.

9 wins per year = not competing for the MNC.
10/11 wins per year = competing for the MNC.  The gap may not seem it, but it's huge.  Even if you can win 9 games every year, you're not competing for the MNC.  Even really winning 10 you don't compete for it, but you're on the bubble for competing. Look at almost every successful coach out there, once they start regularly winning 9/10 games they're on the verge of competing for the MNC.  Hit a ceiling at 9 or under, you're out even if you're Bama or Texas or OU.

In Jimbo's case, he never even plateaued at 9 wins.  Therein lies the problem.  We can do 7/8 or less wins with almost any coach as could Bama or Texas.  Hell, we could hire Les Miles and hit 9 wins.

The Boosters of Substance must have realized they took on a hell of a gamble locking in all that money, and I have to assume they knew full well they could have to pay up if he didn't perform.  So even though it's unfathomable to us, I guess they have that kind of spare change.
