Good morning everybody! A banger of a day for me - the fam is going to King's Island for some Halloween stuff, and everyone is bring friends. So that's a lot of kids that I won't have to deal with as I watch football in glorious solitude. If I make any food it will be awfully simple, the kind I can do on autopilot, like a chicken quesadilla.

Just beat me Sam ready to hit send.Damn you guys are either keeping late nights or in worse shape than I.Which is pretty freakin' bad.Yesterday was the picture perfect autumn afternoon, sunny 70s leaves ablaze and falling. This morning it's like Grampa Munster's basement dreary, wet, foreboding, gonna clean the furnace, replace filter and slurp coffee until 7:30 kick off in Madtown. If you didn't catch the Series last nitght it was good one 6-5 Rangers in 11 well worth the watch
Dawgs - Gators and Ducks - Utes should be good one kick back and take in one of those

It's overcast in Columbus and so dark this morning. I'd have been later but my wife's alarm went off

Beautiful football day here in NW Iowa
26 degrees and 2 inches of snow expected this afternoon
It's still dark but when I stick my head out the back slider, I can hear the leaves hitting the ground
Pancake breakfast fundraiser for the volunteer fire department in the small town of 300 started about an hour ago.
I'll walk down wearing Husker RED and greet my Hawkeye neighbors!
Maybe discuss illegal fair catch signals
after the large breakfast I'll just snack during the Husker/Boiler game with the 2:30 kick
enjoying Yuengling lager, Kinkaider Devil's Gap, and Kinkaider Octoberfest, followed with some Bud Heavy.
the great thing about a 26 degree morning is the beer stored in the attached garage is the perfect temp!
GO BIG RED!!!

that's a pretty light schedule(list of honey-do's) and way too much coffee!

Got things sorted there FF keep the weather puhleeze.Yesterday afternoon pulled out the '79 TORO Blower that I used like twice last year.Changed the gas pulled the plug and cleaned it, primed 3-4X choked it - BAM 1st pull. They really dont make them like they used to - except for the Beer I guess. Oh ya and posters - those to :D
-
Going to try to get to the gym and run a couple errands before kick off.
Out this way, we had an eventful Thursday and Friday night. Our goal will be taking it extremely easy. We will also be declining the chance to go to a bar to watch Wisconsin-Ohio State.
No good sense in building the evening around what I know is going to be an ass kicking
-
Good morning all. Was planning to get up and start this but I guess I needed the rest. Been kinda sick all week.
My thread was gonna be called "Death Star Descends on Madison" but Sam got here first.
-
Somewhat underwhelming slate of games today. Not bad, but a little low on real bangers.

Just what the hell kinda attitude it that? Over?did you say over?

I dunno McCord doesn't seem to get his collective self together until the 2nd half. This ain't one of Urbz squads who always seem to pull that other hand out from behind their backs

need to tune up my Craftsman
didn't run it much last season, but when I had some wet heavy stuff the blower wouldn't run high RPMs. like it was chokin a bit
I suspect a blockage of the intake - perhaps a mouse nestI'll wait until next week when it's in the mid-40s

Making a pot o' chili today, in honor of the Fall season.
Only gonna get up to 87, but it will be windy.
My wife is gonna make little smokies wrapped in crescent rolls.

Damn just have some offset grilled brats with the poppy/sesame seed hoagie or kaiser rolls.W/raw onion and Stadium Mustard
-
Hard freeze last night here in the Twin Cities. Gonna be brisk today out at the New Brickhouse, so last night was spent digging out and washing our stadium blankets and towels.
Beef stew is on the menu for today. Started it last night, used the grill as cold storage, and our house smells fantastic.
-
I made this concoction last night, not sure what to call it, but it was good.
Sautee ground beef, onion, sliced garlic, finely sliced celery
Add tomatoes - 2 cans
Add some tomato sauce - 1 can
Basil
Salt
Powder made from chili peppers
Simmer a while, my wife ate it in a soft taco shell. I took out a can of beans and thought about it and said "Nah, wouldn't be prudent".
-
Supposed to be 80 and possibly rainy here in Central Texico. No football for me, I'll be volunteering with my daughter's marching band at the Area competition in San Antonio all day long. I'll probably catch some of the UT game on the phone, but will be mostly busy all day.

Sounds like a chile-flavored Bolognese sauce to me. it's missing finely diced carrots though.

Yup, sounds like Mexican spaghetti sauce. Interesting.

Retired from.coaching last week and kids won out so no more weekend volleyball. Guess I'll clean the garage floor today before checking out some games.
Colonoscopy coming up in a few days, this giant industrial jug is now in my field of view.
-
Also, the first degree Mrs. GR has is from Michigan State, so a lot of our stuff for the game is green and white.

Damn just have some offset grilled brats with the poppy/sesame seed hoagie or kaiser rolls.W/raw onion and Stadium Mustard
That's pretty much the plan for me tomorrow. Brats simmered in beer, kraut, and onion, then browned on the grill, on kaiser rolls with some fresh kraut and mustard (and prolly some of those simmered onions). Wife making potato salad.
For me today I'm going to head to the driving range for a tune up before playing some golf tomorrow. Then it's a trip to the theater for Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations (https://www.scfta.org/events/2023/ain-t-too-proud-the-life-and-times-of-the-temptations) -- not the most exciting show of the season for me, but should be fun.
Should be a gorgeous 72 degree day.
Tonight will be grilled rack of lamb and a Greek salad. Might crack a nice bottle of wine.

Christmas Ales were out at the store. I'm not a big fan of the Great Lakes one, so I went with Land Grant, which I have not had. The temps are supposed to drop from mild to cool throughout the day, figured that would be good.

it's October for cryin out loud!!!!
I want my Octoberfest!!!
-
Sounds like Henderson and Burke should play tonight, Egbuka is still a question mark
-
Still dark here in pre-dawn Honolulu where work has me onsite this past week. Birds starting to chirp in the palms outside hotel windows. Already hit the gym at the hotel. Now sipping a Japanese brand of canned coffee while watching the rest of gameday.
Have to work later, but since it's Saturday, told them I won't be onsite until the 9am hour. That gives me the early games to watch. Will start with Texas A&M Vs South Carolina.
There's a chance I go to tonight's Hawaii Warriors home football game. But not likely. Tickets prices need to drop a little more.

OSU doesn't need any of them to beat Wisconsin. Wisconsin just isn't quite there yet, Fickell is still trying to rebuild that squad. Maybe they'll be ready to give teams like OSU a tough out next year, but not this year imo. OSU should win by double digits.
The plan for all those guys should be to not rush them back and make sure they'll be 100% for Michigan. Don't need any of them for Rutgers, Michigan State, or Minnesota. Going to need them in Ann Arbor.
-
Holy hell did Indiana just score?
-
Hoosiers daddy?
-
Holy hell did Indiana just score?
yep.
Penn State will still win comfortably, Indiana stinks. But imo....OSU kinda exposed Penn State- they just aren't at the level of the Big 2- they are a notch below- and clown show James Franklin is still the coach- and well he's a heckuva recruiter- but the guy in all honesty is a shit head coach.
-
Hoosiers get a 90 yard touchdown pass and do indeed score. I was watching and didn't quite believe it.

Penn State offense is DOA

might get to my target of 220 yards of Offense
-
northwestern scores again!
14 all
-
Luckily they are playing Indiana, who helpfully muffs the punt
-
PSU converts, tie game
-
Allar finally hits a pass further than 10 yards accurately. Indiana absolutely blew it and left the guy completely uncovered.
7-7. We've got a ball game now.
-
Kansas up 14-0 on the sooners
-
Keep an eye out in Lawrence, KS.
14-0 Leipolds.

Sparty should throw a bag of money at that dude and hire him. Like right now. They won't though. Thankfully.

I don't think he'd take that job right now. 2020? Yep.
-
this game is turning into which QB can throw high and behind their WRs the least. that was an easy 1st down on 3rd down that IU QB threw 10 yards over the open WRs head.

I doubt Sparty will be throwing any bags of money at HCs for awhile.

But again, why would he want to leave the Big 12, only to go into a meat grinder?
XII is still P4 conference with a seat at the playoff table - for now anyway.

I was thinking they dodged a bullet not having to pay Tucker and would have learned their lesson.

Indiana!!

Indiana!!
Simple miscommunication.
For those who weren't watching it literally looked like both the corner and the safety thought they were supposed to blitz and the other guy was supposed to cover the WR.
Both blitzed, nobody covered the WR, and IU just scored a TD on a pass that literally anyone on this board could have made.
-
I'll get warmed up then...

Not me. Arthritis says no.

maybe 220 offensive yards was a bit low???
-
I'm watching PSU/IU and this is why Wisconsin scares me tonight.
Penn State is way better than this, we all know that.
Hard to keep the intensity up, hangovers happen.
Oh, and Wisconsin is WAY better than Indiana.

Keep an eye on Evanston. Despite playing in front of 29 fans, NU is up on MD 24-14.

Ya, me neither,I'm not setting my Beer down for that
-
I never had a strong arm growing up.
I think some kids grow up just slinging it as hard as they can and they end up with the strongest arms. I didn't want to break anything and get in trouble.
I was accurate, though. Playing pickup football with my friends, they'd want me to be QB, but I hated it, because I wanted to get the ball and bowling-ball my way to a TD. I was heavier than my friends, but was the only one who played HS football, so I was in shape and as fast as anyone else.
Good times.
-
Hoosiers!
-
Tie game with three minutes left. PSU getting the ball.
-
Did PSU lose some great offensive linemen from last year? Their RBs had dominant stats in '22, but stink this year. The RBs didn't suddenly forget how to run the ball.
-
Finally a big play for the Nits

Tie game with three minutes left. PSU getting the ball.
:o great gogely-mogely I know my Genuis contest pick well wasn't so genuis but by the stats who knew. Thanx Ninnies SoS will take a hit
-
The last-second deke with the ball in the air by the PSU WR (1) was epic!
-
From tied at 24 to a 9-point game in like 4 seconds. Ludicrous speed!

Wow, Brad Nessler looks awful, I hope he's okay. Badly bloated.

I noticed that too. Perhaps he was enjoying Wlocp. The field is garbage. Jax and Chicago can't manage a grass field.

Gophers first two series have ended with lost fumbles in their own territory. 6-0 MSU. Lucky this isn't worse.

Georgia going right down the field here. Florida needs to stiffen up.
So says me, Florida Man.

Defenses can be effective by taking a little blue pill when backed into the red zone.

Neither of these offenses are setting the building on fire so far.

OU in trouble in Lawrence.
-
The key to our defense's suckitutde is that the DBs are MIA vs run plays.
Once an opponent RB gets past the front 7, he can take a leisurely jog to the end zone, our DBs are laser-focused on whoever they're covering.
There could be a flying T-Rex above them, and they wouldn't see it.

well, the Dawgs are pretty good

Usc will get one down from cal 16 to start before they start 3rd quarter.
Yes, refs reviewed last play and determined usc still had time.

Cal giving the business to SC on the Trojans last ever visit to Berkeley.
Oregon not intimidated by the altitude in Salt Lake.
Little Nubin with a nice TD here. Tyler, his older brother and all everything CB, ran all the way from the defensive huddle on the other end to congratulate him. 17 6 Gophers early in the 4th.

Nice snowfall for AFA at Colo st. Csu wearing state flag duds tonight.

Big Marv

not gonna say the blackshirts are back, but they don't suck
Agreed. They lose 4 fumbles , including a cameo by Sims and the D doesn't panic.
-
Osu must cheat by paying officials. 👀
-
safer than paying sign stealers
-
McCord is not having a good game
-
They say that this is Tressel ball, but there are a lot more turnovers and a lot fewer running plays.
-
JFC QB sneak it
I'm sure he's been told not to run since Brown is not available.

The play call on the potential TD for Wisconsin was terrific. The execution was awful.

When in doubt...Marv

Lot of good games tonight.
The umpire has been caught up in a bunch of plays today, more than normal it seems.

USC and Cal Twelved.
Dumb question: what is twelving?
-
I cannot recall if the term got coined initially by Fro, or UTee.
-
...but it meant that a pair of CFB teams were engaging in a contest on the gridiron where the losing team's score was >40.

Henderson!

They seem often to start out pretty well and then lose two in the middle they should have won easily.
-
Clemson appears to have faded from the scene. USC is doing what many here expected, UNC as well. ND is sort of hanging around a bit.
OSU-UM game could be pretty epic.
The SEC overall looks pretty meh, I think (so far). UGA's schedule is about to get tougher with three ranked opponents, two at home.

Ahhh yes, the metric of "lost badly in the playoff." A natural point that always settles arguments about who should go.

Florida doesn't even need to go to the Playoffs in order to lose badly.
All they have to do is play Kentucky.
-
Florida is a weird team, to me, they have some skilled players of course, but I think lack linemen. That is probably the toughest part of a down team to rebuild.
The Vols are weird to me also, not really sure about them. I guess we'll find out a bit about Missouri next week in Athens.
-
hah, everybody does it
Lol.. Ohio state has the most money so it’s a competitive advantage. Makes them cheaters

It was definitely OAM. And I thought it was losing team still scores 31 or 32?
These days everybody but the B1G seems to do it. Those crappy cro magnon offenses don't lend themselves to much scoring or excitement... :57:

Henderson was the difference last night. McCord is not good.
UW losing Braelon Allen and Chimre Dike in the 2nd quarter wasn't ideal.
Yup I tried to like him, I really did the late drive vs ND had me thinking/believing he turned a corner but sadly no.He's the same QB in week 8 as week one and been thowing to MHJ for 5 yrs now two in HS and 3 in C-Bus.Day hasn't developed anyone behind CJ,but it is noticeable he really has no zip on the ball nor can McCord look off his primary receiver that he routinely locks into then kind of arm punts. QB will be open for competition in the spring

He sucked yesterday. It was by far his worst game.
He had the 3rd best streak of passes without an interception broken last night.
Most of the other QBs at top programs have already had a night like that ( Caleb Williams, JJ McCarthy, Quinn Ewers)With multiple interceptions.
He has been very streaky- with times he looks horrible and other times he looks excellent.
I tend to agree- I don’t get the feeling he is going to be an elite QB. My hope is he becomes a better game manager, distributing the ball. Pretty much what he has been before last night- only with less mistakes.
Let me respectfully- but strongly disagree with you on 2 things.
-Has no zip on the ball. Couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, one of the big criticisms about him by the quarterback, Talking Heads- is that he throws too many passes with too much zip and needs to learn how to throw with more touch. He has a legitimate NFL arm - as Blackledge said last night on McCords first throw. That was one hash to the other and 15 yards downfield.
- He doesn’t get off his first read. Again not true at all. That is an overused cliche anyway. Even the best NFL QBs don’t need to come off their first read. But McCord does go his reads often- think of the number of dump offs he had last night to his hot read ( usually a RB) when nobody is open downfield. Again, he is often criticized for going through his reads TOO quickly and getting impatient with his feet.
Lastly- some of the sacks he took last night were because the pass blocking and play call were horrible. Wisconsin sent 6 or 7 with only 5 blocking. Obvious passing downs and Day gave no outlets for a hot read. And they never ran a single screen on those downs. U

Seriously??
Well that, AND every single other metric. Talent. Coaching. Facilities. SOS.
All of that, plus getting run off the field, is called TOTAL evidence. Every single data point is evidence against an Air Force navigating a shit schedule for a pseudo-chance at the national championship.
That they had a chance before was a lie and it's an even bigger lie now. 65-7.

He thru three up for grabs Marv came down with two of them the one TD pass in the corner. Fleming got destroyed on one of them and limped off. He had 2 defenders beat about 30yds or so downfield. He had to stop then turn and reach back as the ball hit his shoulder pads and defender hit his mid section simaltaneously .If one the of the defenders turned around they would not have had a problem fielding it. Just to inconsistent,he seemed to throw well to his left though

Well let's hope it stays there moving forward

The playoffs have to make room for a G5 for legal reasons. Deal with it and move on. They do need to adjust their parameters now with the Pac 3.
-
What legal reasons?
Nothing about crowning a national champion is official. None of it as rules besides the ones they invent on the fly, as far as I know.

#4 McMillan on AZ is a specimen.
Tetairoa McMillan from Anaheim might be the highest rated recruit Arizona Football has ever signed. #37 Nationally as ranked by 247. McMillan contributed right away as a true freshman last year and has developed into an all-conference/American talent this season.
Coach Jedd Fisch promised a new culture, upgraded talent, and a team worth Tucson's support. So far he's delivering: there are numerous weapons across the roster, players look developed into their positions, attendance is up, and the program is pointed in the right direction. After a 1 win season in 2021 Arizona is 5-3, having beaten two straight ranked conference opponents: @ #19 Washington St 44-6 & Vs #11 Oregon State 27-24.
What might be most impressive is Arizona's secondary holding the likes of Michael Penix, Caleb Williams, Cam Ward, and DJ Uiagalelei to TWO total touchdown passes in their past four games.
Up next is homecoming Vs UCLA.

I almost feel bad for Day and the Bucks for their sub par QB play
almost
check every QB in the Big Ten West
-
I don't think McCord is that bad. He just isn't to the level that OSU has been accustomed to under Day. They went on a pretty high level run from Haskins to Fields to Stroud- who imo was the best of them all. Bama went on a great run with QBs as well. Now they have Milroe.
Hard to have elite QBs every single year.
-
it's even harder in the west

Exactly and I'll add this:
IMHO, the main difference between McCord and recent prior tOSU QB's is consistency. McCord can be great but he can also play like he did in Camp Randall, or worse.

I am seriously rolling my eyes at this little fit. Yes.
is anyone actually asking for Air Force to go? It seems like everyone feels good with the decent number of contenders at the moment.

Not this year, but next year, yes.
The top SIX ranked conference champions would get a slot. Top SIX, as it stands now.

next year Cinderella doesn't really have a shot, but upsets are fun to root for and it will make $$$$
also gives Michigan too many possibilities to scout

According to DraftKings Sportsbook, Nebraska is 3-point favorite over Michigan State. The OU is 34.5. We are approaching Iowa territory.
Big Ten Teams In Week 10
Penn State is favored by 10.5 over- Maryland. The OU is 50.
Wisconsin is favored by 9.5 over Indiana. The OU is 44.5. At some point, Tom Allen has to get fired.
Ohio State - Rutgers - No line.
Iowa is favored by 4.5 over Northwestern. The OU is 31. EGAD!
Illinois is a 2.5-point UNDERDOG to Minnesota. The OU is 41.5.
Purdue is a 32-point UNDERDOG to Michigan. The OU is 48.5.
Other Games
Texas is a 4-point favorite over Kansas State. The OU is 51.5.
Ole Miss is a 3.5-point favorite over Texas A&M. The OU is 63.5.
Notre Dame is favored by 2.5 points over Clemson. The OU is 45.5
Oklahoma is favored by only 6 points over Oklahoma State. The OU is 62.
Washington is only favored by 3.5 over USC. The OU is 76.5. This sounds weird to me. The spread, not the OU.
-
might be a bit of a hot take here but imo Marv is the best WR in the B1G since probably Charles Rogers or Braylon.
He’s just an obvious top 3 NFL draft pick and Pro Bowl player. OSU has put out some dudes lately- but Marv is the best and it’s just like ok…duh…that’s what an NFL receiver looks like from a height/size, speed, strength, body control, hands aspect. A prototype.

Allen's buyout is $20 million. The university hasn't demonstrated the financial and institutional commitment necessary to make IU football even moderately competent on a regular basis. There's no way they'll cough up $20 million to do it this year. It doesn't matter anyway. They could hire prime Nick Saban and they'd still be the worst program in the Big Ten because the university braintrust doesn't understand the importance of football. They either refuse to provide the infrastructure and budget for football relevance, don't understand what that is, or both.

It's not a matter of infrastructure or budget. You're Indiana. You're never going to compete, even with money. We're Purdue. Neither are we. It's one of the reasons I don't pay attention any longer. I've lost interest in the rigged game.
Fundamentally Indiana isn't a shiny enough helmet to recruit at a level much better than they currently do. They're in a moderately-populous state with three in-state major programs (and one G5). One of those in-state programs is a legitimate helmet, with two others in neighboring states.
Playing the arms race to get to parity with a school like Purdue or Illinois or Minnesota will result in a program achieving less than those schools due to the recruiting hangover of being the Big Ten's historically weakest program.
In order to get to "moderately competent" I would argue you must out-spend those programs by a significant level to overcome the recruiting disadvantages, NIL, transfer portal, etc.
-
Be nice to keep things like they were around 2000 or so,smaller programs still had a punchers chance
-
CFP ended that idea.
-

Not really. They didn't have 4 impossible hurdles to leap in a 12-team playoff or the 2 they have now, but they had no way to earn their way in back then.
Even if they scheduled tough OOC, their overall schedules were still comically weak. And so they were dismissed, a la Utah in 06 (being pitted against a crap Pitt conf champ) or the year Boise and MWC TCU were paired (in an ultimate slap in the face).
98 Tulane had no chance. Their best win was 5-6 Rutgers from the Big East. And their conference bowl tie-in was the Liberty. That's not a glass ceiling, that's an underground bunker.
Louisville had some good teams in Conf USA, but they didn't warrant any real chance. Weak-ass resumes, all.
Even the quintessential mid-major to actually summit the mountain, BYU, simply lucked into it. Didn't really win their way in, facing a .500 UM.
If Warshington lost to USC earlier in the year or won the PAC, they'd have been NC.
If OU had won the Orange vs UW, they'd have been NC.
If Florida wasn't on probation and beaten someone decent in the Sugar, they'd have been NC.
If Nebraska had beaten OU, they'd have won the NC.
.
By the late 90s, I don't think BYU wins the NC in the same circumstance. Warshington does. This "shrug and blindly reward the zero in the loss column" crap was thankfully gone, thanks to some brain evolution.
-

I THINK a generational coach can turn it around, at least for a couple years, see Spurrier at South Carolina or Meyer just about anywhere. Indiana probably needs a coach near that level AND the spending to be a consistent 8-9-10 game winner. If you can hold that, you start to be relevant to recruits I think. Of course, said coach will likely be tempted by others.

That's the exactly it but now you bitch about air force getting in.Just WTF is your point?
Purdue,Rutgers,Indiana had a much better chance than today's situation with NIL $$$ and delevoped talent portaling.Because a better chance with established Programs and all of their resources towards the sport whether work out and conditioning facilities or nutritional programs and even better coaching(for the most part). All of that get's them to the LEAGUE quicker if that the destination and for many it is.There is a much bigger disparity in those today than just 20-25 yrs ago
-

I believe by "smaller programs" he was referring to low power conference teams, as we were talking about Indiana specifically.
It would be unlikely for an Indiana team on a good year to actually have NC aspirations, because it's unlikely they could ever actually go undefeated in the Big Ten. And if they did, any potential year where there was another undefeated team with a shinier helmet, the poll-based NC would select someone above them.
But in the crazy scenario where they went undefeated OOC and in the Big Ten, beat the PAC champ in the Rose Bowl, and there were no other undefeated teams? Indiana is your national champion.

Only disagreement, Nubbz, is that I don't think the disparity in *facilities* means squat for getting to the league. I think pretty much all teams have competent S&C programs and nutritional programs these days. The fancy facilities are merely meant to LURE recruits, not to develop them any better.
The reason the top programs put more players in the league is because they recruit more top players with the athleticism, skill, and talent to get to the league. A 5* recruit at Purdue or Indiana is IMHO as likely to get drafted to the NFL as a 5* at Michigan or OSU. It's just that 5* players don't go to Purdue or Indiana, so we rarely see it.
-
If a program has up to date equipment that is properly maintained with good instruction is the point.Look at Iowa sticking with Brian - that may have put them in a hard hole to climb out of and that is rightfully a black eye for pops.Kirk kinda comes away richer than anyone with his resume deserves to be.Think he may reward his employer by taking the high road and doing the right thing but N-O-O-O.Kinda mimmicks the Whitehouse
-
If a program has up to date equipment that is properly maintained with good instruction is the point.
Yeah, but I'd argue any power conference team is doing that. You don't need Alabama-level facilities to have a competent S&C program. They're spending money on those facilities to wow a bunch of teenagers and convince them to walk through the front door, but I don't think it makes much difference to what walks out the back door after 4 years in the program.
-
My GUESS is a decent S&C guy is pretty easy to find, and a brilliant one is likely not any better realistically. Maybe the latter is more motivational.
The WOW stuff is for recruits.
I'd guess some programs struggle to spend money productively, the end up throwing money at "stuff" that looks nice.

Not really.
Michigan's S&C guy is about as elite as they come. They do not grow on trees.

Maybe so, I don't know how one could quantify it. I know personal trainers around here are "dime a dozen" and struggling for business (not that they all are competent of course).
Technical coaches like OL coaches I'd GUESS can be elite, or not, and hard to find.
I watched a video yesterday about the fastball and it talked about some dude who never made the majors and may have thrown hardest of anyone (Steve Dalkowski). I was thinking about pitching coaches. It's about as technical as a golf swing I'd opine.

I think "think" I can tell a positive difference in the new S&C guy at Rhule brought in compared to Frost
-
There's a lot to stay on top of as far as incorporating the latest workout routines and dietary findings, because science, yo. LSU's Tommy Moffit was long considered to be one of the best in the biz. Frequently turned down attempts to hire him away to other programs. Alabama's red-headed guy, can't remember his name, learned his chops under Moffit at LSU and is now often regarded as the best. Probably already was for a while, imo, with Moffit getting older and dealing with bouts of cancer in his later years.
-
I don't mean to suggest S&C is simple or easy, only that the best routines likely are public knowledge, or so I would think. And can the difference between excellent and elite in an S&C coach translate into an extra win on the field? I'm clearly guessing here. It could be tricks of the trade are not well known, and perhaps motivational techniques are also crucial.
-
Because the "best" routines are so person-specific, I don't know that there's a stock program that can be implemented for a team, or even for positions groups. As far as wins on the field, well, maybe, indirectly at least. An elite S&C routine can help avoid injuries and lead to faster recovery times if injured. If a key player can make it back that one game earlier than he otherwise would've, that could be significant.
-
I'd love to have Herbert back at Wisconsin. Playing in Pasadena was a regular thing when he was there.
-
Because the "best" routines are so person-specific
I can see there being considerable judgment and technique in that aspect, yes.

Top level S&C guys are hard to find. IU had David Ballou and his sidekick, Dr. Matt Rhea in the years where they started to make a bit of an ascendance to regular competency. They were huge because they developed scientifically based individualized workouts for each player. They were eventually poached by Alabama and there has been a noticeable decline in player development.
