Title: 2023 Week 8: Buy, Sell, or Hold
Post by: 847badgerfan on October 16, 2023, 11:51:22 AM
1. Ohio State will advance to the playoff.

Hold. This weekend will tell us everything.

2. Iowa will run the table.

Buy. There is nobody left that can beat their defense and punter.

3. Michigan will lose a game.

Hold. It could be to PSU or OSU, or could also be a shocker, or not happen at all.

4. Wisconsin continues its bowl streak and winning record streak, dating to 2002.

Sell. The QB depth chart is a redshirt senior who is now out for the season, followed by 4 freshmen. UW cannot win on running alone this season, and RB2 is out for the season.

What say you?

I'm thinking about making this a weekly thing.

Ok I'll give it a shot:

1) Ohio State to the Playoff?

Hold, but a little shaky.  I don't think we'll have 2 Big Ten teams this year.

2) Iowa will run the table

Sell.  I think they'll win the West, but their offense isn't good enough to save them from a few fluky plays against the wrong team.  I think they'll lose 1 or 2 more and go 9-3/10-2.

3) Michigan will lose a game

Hold, but also shaky.  They'll be favored vs. PSU and OSU, but could possibly drop one of them.  Maryland could possiblly be scary.

4) Wisconsin continues its bowl streak

Buy!  Look at the rest of the schedule.  You just need 2 more wins.  Northwestern and Indiana look like wins and could get others against Minny, ILL and Nebraska.

1. Sell.  Nobody is beating Michigan this year and we should have an undefeated team from every major conference
2. Sell
3.sell
4. Hold

I'm not sure I agree with either of those things.  Michigan *LOOKS* really good but their opposition has been so bad that it is hard to tell.  I *THINK* they are really good but their system is also fairly dependent on being ahead or at least close and they haven't played anybody yet that could challenge them.  What happens if they get down a couple scores?

On the second point, at this time of year it almost always looks like there are going to be a multitude of undefeated teams.  Then uspets start happening and we almost never end up with more than one or two.  The same thing will probably happen this year.  We'll have a crazy weekend where three top-10 teams all lose or something and the whole picture will be rearranged.

That said, I do think there is a solid chance that there will be at least four P5 Champs with one or less losses.  Part of the reason for that is that the Pac and ACC have joined the B12 in doing away with divisions so you aren't going to have any 3-loss winners of a weak division pulling upsets in those CG's.  That could only happen in the B1G or SEC and it doesn't look all that likely even there.

1. Ohio State will advance to the playoff.
Sell.  See below.
2. Iowa will run the table.
In the regular season?  Buy.  Is there any sort of loophole whereby we could combine Iowa's defense with LSU's offense and the fans get to split whatever success happens as a result?
3. Michigan will lose a game.
Sell.  I've got the Go Blues beating PSU and OSU.
4. Wisconsin continues its bowl streak and winning record streak, dating to 2002.
Buy.  I think the Badgers find 2+ more wins on the remaining schedule.  If I'm wrong, 847 can say "I told you so."

Don't forget - Question 4 is two parts. Everyone but me is addressing only one part. UW needs to find 3 more wins to get 7. Where are they?

Okay, fair enough.  @Illinois, @Indiana, Northwestern, Nebraska, @Minnesota are all winnable still.  Not that the Badgers will win all of them, but right now I think Wisconsin snags some combination of 3 of those.  Nebraska could be tough, but the Badgers get them at home, and I've hardly been impressed with the Huskers so far.  Northwestern at home seems likely.  Then just pick up 1 road win against 3 teams no better than Wisconsin and Bob's your uncle.

You also have a chance to win a bowl game against MAC tomato can to get to 7-6 if you fail to get the 7th in the regular season.

They needed that last season and got it against the ASU tomato can.

Sell - OSU is the 3rd-best team in the East
Sell - They suck too bad to be 6-1, much less 11-1
Hold - playing 2 teams as good as PSU and OSU....can be favored in both and still unlikely to go 2-0
Buy - just get to .500 and win a mid-Dec bowl
