Title: Vol Fans Better Get Ready for Disappointment If a Change Isn't Made
Post by: gymvol on September 10, 2023, 11:35:10 AM

I'm not a football expert but I do know TN is in trouble if Heupel continues his experiment of playing a certain QB.

TN has a good run game but it's a chuck and duck screen passing game with hardly anything completed down field.

Last night it was the same thing we've seen in the past with overthrows and throws behind receivers that are wide open.  Wasn't very good against Virginia and Saturday against Austin Peay was even worse.

If it's the same next week in the Swamp, I'm afraid we won't be happy campers coming out of Gainsville.

So, get ready for it because it's only a matter of time before it happens unless a change is made somehow or in some way.

The thing I can't stop thinking is that Joe won the job over Hooker... he practices better... but he sure didn't play better.

The question is if Nico is ready or if they're ready to give up on Joe.

That aside...

I saw more dropped passes than I did bad throws.  I also saw some less than ideal play calls.  I didn't see a lot of spazzing by coaches where there should have been some words passed with emphasis...

I really think the team has been laying back... and working where they figure they need it most.

I hope this is so... I really do.

I think when a good team plays an "AP" they don't go in trying to win, they go in using it as practice, and to avoid revealing their real playbook to the extent possible.

The idea of playing teams like AP is to score enough early to get people in the game to get experience but that didn't happen.

It might not have been a loss, but it was a failure because 2nd and 3rd string players didn't get to play.

JM was 1 of 7 in his first 8 passes because of overthrows and throwing behind the receivers. The one throw Bru caught over the middle was low he had to scoop it off the turf.

We've seen this before it's Guarantano all over again with a good passing percentage because of all the screen plays but can't complete anything down the field.

We've already seen that kind of offense doesn't win games in the SEC. The defense of opponents will be stopping the run, and you stop Tennessee. You'll see a lot of it Saturday in Gainsville with the Gayturds trying to do just that.

I have read the same sorts of comments from Dawg fans lately, even after a 45-3 win.  And some of it may be on point.

The backup QB often is a very popular player.

Didn't watch that one but I did keep up with the score on the ticker.  It looked like slow-going for Tennessee and I wondered what was up.  Last year's team would surely have put up 35-40 on a team like AP by the half.

Not when the starter is a good player.

I've seen this asinine take from the majority of Vol fans.

The playbook is out there, and has been for a couple years now.  You think Heupel threw out the script and started from scratch?

Tennessee isn't hiding anything.  They have a new QB that is very limited throwing the ball, accurately that is.

I think the Vols are in trouble, and will be a shadow of last years squad, unless Nico is the real deal, and ready to lead.

Milton is a 6th year senior, and hasn't improved in any of the 6 years.  He is who we thought he was.  And will cost TN winnable games.

I generally see very abbreviated play calling in chump games, often coupled with fan complaints about not scoring more/faster/better, and folks wanting the backup to start.

Not Heupel, unless he just started this past Saturday.

I watched the game again.  Then, I watched the Virginia game... then I watched the vandy and bowl game from last season...

The coaches are definitely focusing on the run game and they have yet to open up the playbook this season.

Now is that because lack of faith in Milton or lack not faith in receivers or just because they've not felt the need to at all?

I'm thinking we'll know early in the UF game.  If I'm right and the playbook is held close they'll go for UFs throat immediately... if there is concern about the components or execution, they'll play conservative and probing.

Either and any way, they're a helluvalot better than either the Virginia or the AP game.  It could be they were simply sleep walking through a team they thought would lay down Saturday....

I once saw my team do the opposite of playing close to the vest.

They opened 2019 against GA Southern and ran several cool things that we never saw again.  The Sean Payton/Drew Brees special, 4 verts and the back escaping WIDE open into the flats.....and once they got down near the goal line Burrow hit Jefferson on a sexy-as-hell tunnel screen......never to be seen again.  They showed more that night than any other game of the season.

They probably didn't need those plays down the road.  I don't generally watch a good team playing a chump except when it's "my team", and they certainly look plain vanilla on offense and defense.  I suspect they are working on timing and assignments and technique more than trying to win.  But other coaches of course may operate differently.
