My comment: I am not sure Indiana and Rutgers are worse than Northwestern. Northwestern was beaten down in the transfer portal this season. Northwestern had 8 transfer portal departures, and one transfer portal reception. Five assistant Northwestern coaches were added including one from NDSU who will be D-Coordinator, and NU added an assistant from SDSU, both schools are top FCS programs.
I haven't looked at Indiana's and Rutgers's transfer portal additions and subtractions.
I wish someone would comment on Wisconsin's status in the transfer portal. Seems like they lost some of their top players, and I know they brought some in, but I am not sure what players Wisconsin brought in.

Here is a list.
QB's:
Iowa took QB Deacon Hill, who put his hat in the ring as soon as PC was fired.
Mertz left as soon as CLF was hired.
Wolf left when he saw UW take 3 transfer QB's. He knew he had no chance.

My vague memory is that in many years, somebody between Minny, NW, and Purdue do a lot better than expected. I guess you could add MSU and Indy to that group.
-
Unlike NU and PU, Minnie has not won any championship.

I mean it's been like 25 years for Northwestern and Purdue too

B1G West champs get a trophy.
-
Doing better than expected means they weren't 4-8, they were 8-4, and maybe beat OSU or somebody.
I think this happens in every conference.

Yeah, but this is probably going to become less and less possible in the NIL era. Those schools just aren't going to have the payroll (or the desire to spend it) to compete.

We all recall when Pickens got into Oklahoma State football in a Big Way ($$$) and how they made a bit of a splash for a while. They are still decent. But Deep Pockets of that ilk NOW could really alter a landscape, if such a donor is interested. Take, say South Carolina. Give them a big fan who is a billionaire and runs multiple car dealerships, whatever. He NILs recruits for ads mostly because it fills the roster with 4 and 5 stars, not that it aids sales.
This is unlikely at Purdue or NW, but it COULD happen at quite a few places.

Warren Buffet could step up
-
Yeah, he's not really a CFB fan, he does (or once did) play a lot of bridge. He used to enter the Omaha city duplicate tournament with Bill Gates as partner.

True. I don't think anyone ever expected Oregon to be what they are, but then Phil Knight started throwing around crazy money up there.
Obviously Purdue has some wealthy alums, but I don't really know of many who have been willing to support athletics to that degree. Northwestern of course is going to have a bunch of wealthy alums, but did any of them care about athletics even when they were on campus?
-
I'd guess Vandy has some wealthy alumni also, but ...
You really need one or two who really like football and are willing to pay for it. I'm told the football players in my day all had jobs at some local car dealerships in the summer and never showed up for work.

he shows up at a game about once or twice a season
he could be a big supporter behind the scenes, but it's not been made public
his public comments are that he gives to the academic side of the U but not the Athletic side

Why is OSU above TTUN again? The bucks have gotten spanked around 2 years straight, and replaced their Heisman finalist QG with hot garbage.
-
FPI factors in recruiting rankings
-
FPI is absolute garbage.
FIFY. Lol.
-
If a ranking doesn't do a better job predicting than others, it's useless indeed. I view them all as useless, including the spring mags.
Maybe they are worth minor discussion if they rank X highly we didn't expect.

IU fans have been clamoring for Mark Cuban to be their guy for a while.
