No, no one has 5 rivals, but that's the point. That's what makes this hard.
.
Florida: FSU, Georgia, and Tennessee, right off the bat. Those are easy. Then we have Carolina, basically all because of Spurrier. It won't last, but it's a thing. Plus we have Miami historically, and maybe someday they'll get back together. Auburn used to be a big thing, too.....historically placing 3rd, behind UGA and FSU. But divisions took care of that one.
No, LSU still isn't a rival. They never were. We were thrown together because reasons.
.
Historical: Georgia, FSU, Auburn, Miami, annnnnnd Alabama (mostly bc everyone wanted to beat Alabama)
.
Modern: FSU, UGA, Tennessee, Carolina, Miami (rarely play, but it's a huge deal when we do)

MUCH harder when you've changed conferences a couple times
for the Huskers........
Oklahoma - fading
Texas - fading
Iowa - growing - because of a border and a win
Wisconsin - growing maybe, gotta get a win
Minnesoota
Northwestern
very sad, really
-
Come down the road FF we'd be happy to be your
Rulers Rivals

Just going by today's landscape I guess we can include michigan...for a few seasons anyway. Also MSU/PSU - UW was fun when playing them with Barry so put them there . Evidently tOSU has played Illinois more than anyone except Michigan. They also have 30 wins vs tOSU and it's the only program we play for a trophy - The Illibuck so I guess that rounds it off.I dunno I was going to include the Domers maybe as they are next door but just to snooty to play big teams with any regularity saying they cherish their Traditions with Army/Navy.Avoiding pummelings really
-
UGA's main rivals today are obvious, UF, UTenn, Auburn. I noted GT was in the past, and might be again if they ever get off the floor. USCe can be pesky, as can UK, but they aren't rivals as I define the term ...
A rival is a team you play often (near annually) in a game with some significance (usually) with a lot of history behind it, usually in geographic proximity. I don't think any team has five without stretching the term.
-
5?
-
Wouldn't it just be the teams in our "divisions" for the most part? The teams that we actually play every year?
-
Minnesota
Iowa
Northwestern
From the East, there are some choices.
OSU was juicy when King Barry was there and beating them, but it's fading as UW has not beaten them since 2010.
MSU was pretty electric for a while, but divisions and fixed scheduling killed that one.
UM was just getting going after 6 seasons of fixed scheduling, but that's out now.
There is no in-state D1 program.
There is no regional non-conference rival, or any non-conference rival for that matter.
UW has played ND 17 times, and UNL 16 times (including conference games).
-

I suspect many programs have two real rivals "in division" and one outside of that. The B1G might be an exception, there aren't too many rivals cross division there.

and when the Cali Twins join and the B1G goes to PODS no one will have a rival
-
tenn
au
msu
lsu - flip lsu/msu for recency bias, but until 15-20-ish years ago, msu was a solid but distant 3rd rival.
psu - mostly because i like the idea of ooc rival and we have a good history together. and i'd like to continue it.
historically, gt should be 5 probably, but its been so long since we've played. i've only been alive for 1 meeting, and i was under 3 months old. uga could be argued, i guess, but we play so infrequently. same with uf, though we do have a solid seccg rivalry.
i don't really consider vandy a rival, though we were paired together for a long time as one. same with ole miss.
i don't consider ark a rival either, though i very much enjoy the games with them. maybe that one is poised to become 5th.

Oklahoma
Texas A&M
Arkansas
Vanderbilt
Wofford

Believe or not, Iowa plays 4 trophy games each year
Iowa State - Cy-Hawk Trophy
Minn -Floyd Of Rosdale
Wisc - Heartland
Neb. - Heroes
After that the best rival candidates are NW and ILL. NW hates Iowa with a passion but Iowa thinks of NW more like a pesky fly you keep trying to swat away.
Iowa-ILL is more of a basketball rivalry that goes back decades. Does basketball count? If so I guess the 5th rival is Illinois.
I know during the leaders and Legends era, they tried to turn Iowa-Purdue into a cross-division rivalry, so it was fun to pretend Purdue was Iowa's most hated rival for a while. But then they switched to East-West divisions and Purdue became just a normal division rival for Iowa, so that most hated rival joke just kind of died out.

Historically, I would say:
Pitt
Virginia Tech
Penn St
Maryland
Syracuse

You know, as much as that precious moments version of the re-designed Cy-Hawk was hated and ridiculed at the time, the design has grown on me over the years, to the point where I almost wish they would have kept it, instead of scrapping it for that boring football shaped trophy

Which programs, if any, have basically no rivals (P5)?
Maryland? Rutgers? Might be a program that has switched conferences in the past 20 years or so. Louisville?
-
Although now that I think about it, that corn family trophy still kind of gives off a Children of the Corn type vibe. Son, the corn is good. We must worship the corn, etc.

Maryland and Rutgers probably consider PSU a rival, but PSU doesn't think that.
-
Louisville plays Kentucky every year now.
They used to play Cincinnati for a "keg of nails"

UW has 2.5 rivals
Minnesota
Iowa
Sort of Nebraska (only been played 16 times)
NW isn't really a rival. It's a team that every loss to them makes me want to put a fist through a wall because the game is always stupid. I don't get the sense NW specifically cares, and I don't feel like UW thinks of the game as anything but a normalcy in victory and an affront if there's defeat.
Michigan and OSU are weird cases. I think at points the games are competitive for some rivalry-esque fire, but those are isolated. For a time, UW was doing decent against OSU, couldn't touch Michigan. Now OSU is OSU, and UW-Michigan is just a grab bag with each team's volatility.
MSU was a thing for a time, but if you've played three times since 2012, it's hard to keep that fire going, even if that game last year made me want to burn Spartan Stadium to the ground.
-
I definitely consider NU a rival. UW has played more games against the nerds than any other team not called Minnie.

Minnesota has more than five, if we are going on trophy games.
-
a trophy does not a rival make
Huskers had trophy with Missery, for example
I'd guess if they ever schedule a non-con game, the trophy would be on the line

Bobby Carpenter likened the Minnesota HC job to playing Zelda, where you just go around trying to collect obscure little trinkets the whole time.

UL - Kentucky
Rutgers might consider someone a rival, but that team looks at Rutgers like shit on their shoe.
.
Hell, Rutgers' rival are the NYC pro sports teams.

That looks like something you could buy for $40 at a random antique store.

I'd like to see them in the AAC so they could play their true rivals.
Temple beckons.

The logic is compelling, though I still don't like it for some gut reason.

The nerds win often enough lately. Chaps my ass.
