If you could only have 11 players from this past year's team to play both ways, who would they be?
5 linemen/LBs
6 backs/ends/DBs
.
Realistically, there would be no 300 lbers, but that's not feasible nowadays.
.
Ex: Florida
position - player (real position)
QB/DB - Anthony Richardson (QB)
Back/DB - Trey Dean (S)
Back/DB - Trevor Etienne (RB)
End/DB - Ricky Pearsall (WR)
Back/LB - Montrell Johhnson (RB)
End/DB - Xzavier Henderson (WR)
Line/DL - O'Cyrus Torrence (G)
Line/DL - Gervon Dexter (DT)
Line/LB - Amari Burney (LB)
Line/DL - Chris McClellan (DT)
Line/DL - Richard Gouriage (OT)
.
In actual, old-timey one-platoon, defenses were mostly 6 DL, 2 LB, 3 DB. The 6 DL included 2 edge/ends/OLBs.
If we instilled one-platoon today, it would probably be more of a 4-2, with 5 DBs.
Either way, I have a 220 lb LB playing offensive line, lol.
.
Here's the lineup:
offense:
QB richardson
RB Etienne
RB Johnson
WR Dean
WR Henderson
WR Pearsall
OL Torrence, Dexter, Burney, McClellan, Gouriage
.
defense:
DE Dexter, McClellan
DT Torrence, Gouriage
LB Johnson, Burney
CB Henderson, Dean
S Richardson, Etienne, Pearsall
.
Those 300 lbers would slim down to 250 after about a month of 60 min football games/practices, lol.
-
For Iowa this is easy.
Take the 10 starters on defense plus TE Sam LaPorta who can play the 3rd LB. Cooper Dejean can play QB.
Then just let the Iowa defense outscore the other team's offense to win most of its games.
-
Do we have to have a QB?

Do we have to have a QB?
You can have Graham Mertz, back. I am sure Florida won't mind.
-

You need someone to take the snap, sure. Even if he's not passing much, like in a single-wing.
-
I'd put Brock Bowers at every position and go ...

probably why OAM started this thread

I predict Florida fans will like him, assuming Napier can coach him up.
-
this is one of those weird exercises with crazy results. like for bama, could be argued would be best to leave of a heisman winning and potential #1 nfl pick at qb due to his skill set not being worth it here. or, to maybe go another extreme, keep him, go with an almost complete 11 of strictly starting offense, and just outscore everyone else.
-
I try to put myself back in 1950 and just see these guys as athletes, especially the cardio/60 min aspect of it.
Like Will Anderson is an OL and does what he does on defense. Young does what he does at QB, but is freed up to show off his athleticism at safety or something.
Perhaps UGA's sole actual lineman is #88, and the other OL/defenders are LB types.
.
But we all envision something different, and that's a plus.
-
A fun part is figuring out who would kick and punt, lol.
.
Posting this thread made me make a connection I had never previously made: 2-platoon football = the DH in baseball.
Traditionalists hated the idea of expanding the 11-man team on the field, as WWII ended and they actually got their way for about a decade. But then 'progress' won out and we have 2-platoon now.
Traditionalists in baseball held on to that idea of 9 players, that a DH was sacrilege.
.
I think 2-platoon/specialization has made football more fun to watch, but part of me would really respect and appreciate 11 players displaying more skills than they're now required to. Getting tired, lower-scoring games, etc......but the best 11 overall, well-rounded players being out there......it would be special.

yup, no way todays players could hold the old guys jocks
-
Many could, many are leaps and bounds better - the elite ones do it in HS - but not the big boys.
.
The 2022 freak athlete that played 4 sports growing up and is like 6'2" 210......a Jabril Peppers type or someone like that could have played back then and would put the 5'10" 170 lb all-star on the bench.
.
But there would be zero shit brickhouse guys playing 1-platoon, even today. You can't carry that mass and have the cardio to go every play, both ways.
-
Do you guys think a 1-platoon (ie - 11 players only) team would sell?
70s Michigan 1-platoon, 90s FSU 1 platoon, etc.......maybe average the team's stats from the decade or something?
.
If you had a 8 or so of those teams, it would be fun to play them against each other.
But it may be too obscure an idea. Keep in mind my customers are 50+ years old and may appreciate it.
-
better question for the customers

Even they don't remember single platoon football.

I just think it could be a streamlined version of the all-time teams I offer. The best 11 from my school can beat your best 11. So it would be all-time instead of by decade or whatever. Idk.
.
ELA, do you have any feedback on the game - gameplay or game design. I have an exciting idea about the playing field being replaced by something better, but won't get to it until summer.
-
not much for stats on defensive players back in the day
how do you assign yards per play with your LB getting all the touches?
and your stud safety tossing all the passes
-
Yeah, it would really require some major fudging that I'm not comfortable doing. Hmmphh.

I was hoping my oldest would be more into it when I bought it. Figured that would be something we could do together, but it's still a little over his head. He's started really getting into stratomatic baseball, so I think he's close. Don't really have the solo time to play the one person version.
I do think the learning curve is steep, but quick. The first time we played, I thought we'd never have the time to play, but it only took like 3 games before it was second nature which card to go to. I think it's a hard sell as a one time play, but if you have someone you can play regularly with it picks up.
The games have been a little low scoring, but not obscenely so, and the sample size is too small to draw much from it.
-
All of my play-testing averaged out to a lot of scoring, but that was 2-player. I was scared to death that would be the issue.
Most customers buy great teams from the past with strong run defenses.
.
But I feel good about the running game, as in reality there are often short gains and the rare long gainer (WN situation).
I'm looking into changing the WN card/situation to be 50% long plays, 25% nothing, 25% fumbles, though. I need to mess with it more.

Ditka once said that Walter Payton could plan any position on the field.
I believe that.

he would give em hell in the trenches, but.............

Ditka also once traded away his whole draft for Ricky Williams, so...

That was after he went nuts, when he started partying too much.

better than Herschel
I don't remember Herschel in a Wedding dress, but he was goofier
-
Hey, if John Lynch could go from a QB to a hard-hitting safety, why not Peyton Manning? lol
