Merry Christmas everybody! Heading up the road to my brother's where his in-laws, my Dad, and my other brother are spending the weekend. Among his in-laws annual Christmas special choices of Bad Santa, Christmas Story, and Elf, they are having me pick a special to watch. Going with Flintstones Christmas Carol:

Merry Christmas all.  Staying home in the sub zero wind chill weather with my hubby, sister, and youngest son.  Watching games with the son today and finishing up the side dishes so I only have to throw the ham in the oven and cook biscuits for the meal.  All else is done; haven't had anything to do this week except cook.  Rewatching a bunch of Husker (winning) games to tide me over until next season.

Everyone stay safe and have a wonderful holiday season.

flying around the holidaze is nutz

I haven't been on a plane for 6 years - didn't really enjoy it

Shouldn't offend anyone. People are getting weird about that stuff.

If you're Jewish, Happy Hanukkah. Or whatever you want.

I'm Christian, so, Merry Christmas it is. No offense to anyone.

^^ This is a good example of me having no idea that a movie I grew up with has a half-assed, unimaginative, shameless, opportunistic, cash grabbing sequel.

Bad Santa is another; until this year I somehow missed there was a Bad Santa 2.

And it wasn’t until last Christmas I caught an unfortunate glimpse of Christmas Story 2 airing on Telemundo. It’s shtick is depicting a more grown up Ralphie reliving the many memorable moments that made Christmas Story a must watch Christmas movie, though with a cruder twist. The much parodied scene of Schwartz’s tongue frozen to the flag pole becomes his tongue sucked into one of those pneumatic bank vacuum tubes.

Per a quick Google, it appears it links back to some pre-english traditions of X being in place of Christ becuase X is the "ch" sound in greek.

It seems it was thrown into the culture war blender at some point, though it's not 100 percent clear if it was someone wanting to not have the name "Christ" in Christmas for some reason, or someone who wanted to stir up dander accusing someone else of that act.

I saw a list of the most streamed Christmas movies this year. It said it was compiled from multiple sites, and I cannot vouch for which sites.  But the top three were Home Alone, Christmas Vacation, and Elf. I Love all three, no complaints.  But where it got me was the headline being that people still prefer the classics. To me that's Holiday Inn or Wonderful Life.  I guess I'm old enough that I need to accept Home Alone and Christmas Vacation, as being 30 years old.  (I pointed out to my wife when Chevy blew the dust off the reel of "Christmas '59", that he was actually closer to that Christmas than we now are to the Christmas they are celebrating (1989).  But Elf?  That's like 15 years old.

Oddly #4 was Four Christmases, which I have always thought was underrated, but apparently everyone else likes it too

Credit to Chuck Lorre. He knows how to make TV like that.

Agree with that. I think most network shows are pretty awful though so not just singling out Big Bang. They’re pretty much all bad. The Office was maybe the only truly great one and I doubt you could even make that today with all the wokies and cry babies.

Well,  it's true that I'm about as nerdy as you can get.

An electrical engineer, who was in band, choir, and theater, who read almost exclusively fantasy and science fiction from the age of 8 through 18, loves Star Wars and Star Trek and Lord of the Rings.

I understand the scientific aspects of the show, I just find it overall to be contrived, obvious, and not-very-funny.  But everyone's entitled to his own opinion.

But no, you're not nerdier than I am.  No flippin way.  We might just have to engage in a nerd-off to establish our true pecking order of nerddom.

Community was a gem.....for 3 seasons, and the 4th was decent enough.  5 never recovered from the behind-the-scenes upheaval and 6 was some of the worst sitcom material I've ever seen.  NBC just couldn't leave well enough alone.  But those first 3 seasons are HoF level.

I also really liked Parks and Rec.  Ron Swanson is my spirit-animal.  Both were significantly better than The Office, imo.

No, much worse than that.  We organized and conducted math competitions for our school, and then district, area, region, and state levels.  Calculator and Number Sense were the two primary areas of competition back in my day. That may or may not be the same these days.

Yeah I stopped watching Community after Season 4.  Parks and Rec had a sweet spot too, seasons 2-4 or maybe 5.  Season One was so horrible that I just couldn't watch it at all. I caught back up a year or two later when trusted friends told me it had improved a great deal.

Oh, and I agree on Ron Swanson.  I consider him to be the greatest character on television, of all time.

No, much worse than that.  We organized and conducted math competitions for our school, and then district, area, region, and state levels.  Calculator and Number Sense were the two primary areas of competition back in my day. That may or may not be the same these days.

Well I collect stamps and have replaced the mother board twice in my old laptop computer

I built an entire RISC CPU with an instruction set of 19 codes, using discrete Fast TTL logic components.

I also watch Hallmark movies

This makes you a sap, not a nerd.

I could probably draw a line between those who watch Hallmark movies and those who don't.  I respect one group and not the other.

To this day when somebody puts a salad in front of me I ask them why are they feeding me food that my food eats.

I was saying the line "salad is what food eats" at least as far back as 1993, so it's possible Ron Swanson stole that from me.
