Title: Nebraska (3-6, 4-8) at Iowa (5-4, 7-5) Post Game
Post by: Hawkinole on November 21, 2022, 03:18:00 AM
The past 4 games have Iowa QB Spencer Petras at 63-of-100 (63%) for 727 yards and five total touchdowns (three passing, two rushing), and zero interceptions. That is Iowa football.
Unfortunately, losing a one score game in the 4th Qtr. in most recent years is Nebraska football.
The past few years in this series:
    (AWAY) 2021/11/26  Iowa      28 - Nebraska  21  W
     (HOME) 2020/11/27  Iowa       26 - Nebraska   20    W
     (AWAY) 2019/11/29  Iowa       27 - Nebraska   24   W
     (HOME) 2018/11/23  Iowa       31 - Nebraska   28   W
     (AWAY) 2017/11/24  Iowa       56 - Nebraska   14   W
     (HOME) 2016/11/25  Iowa       40 - Nebraska   10   W
     (AWAY) 2015/11/27  Iowa       28 - Nebraska   20   W
     (HOME) 2014/11/28  Iowa       34 - Nebraska   37 OT L
     (AWAY) 2013/11/29  Iowa       38 - Nebraska   17   W
     (HOME) 2012/11/23  Iowa        7 - Nebraska   13   L
     (AWAY) 2011/11/25  Iowa        7 - Nebraska   20   L
Iowa won 8 of the past 11. 7 of 11 were one score games; Iowa won 5 of 7 one score games.
Even when these games are not supposed to be close they almost always are close.
It is sort of like a rivalry game.

Nebraska is down to its last football game of 2022 and spoiler is the only role that remains.

The Huskers (3-8, 2-6) head to Iowa City Friday to face a Hawkeyes team that can clinch the West Division title with a win.

Circa Sports made Iowa a 9-point favorite on its opening line on Sunday. The game total started at 42.5.

ESPN’s Football Power Index ranks Iowa 31st this week, Nebraska 74th. The FPI ratings, adding 2.5 points for home field advantage, project a line of Iowa -12.8.

If Iowa wins they're going to Indy.  That's some motivation right there after the year Iowa has had.

So basically Iowa has won 7 in row and 8 of the last 9 against Nebrasksa since 2013.

The last Nebraska coach to beat Iowa was Bo Pelini in 2014, beating Iowa in OT.  Pelini was fired the day after the win over Iowa.

At one time Neb led this series all-time 28-12-3 but now only leads 29-20-3.

Nebraska is playing on Black Friday for the 33rd consecutive season dating back to 1990.
The Huskers have met Iowa on Thanksgiving Friday the past 12 seasons, and played
Colorado (1996-2010) and Oklahoma (1990-95) prior to that.

The Nebraska-Iowa matchup has been decided by seven or fewer points each of the
past four seasons. Iowa posted three-point wins on back-to-back last second field
goals in 2018 and 2019, and has won by six and seven points, respectively, the past
two seasons.

The road team has won seven of the past 10 meetings in the series, including NU wins in Iowa City in 2012 and 2014.

• Nebraska is 9-6 on the road in Black Friday games since 1990, including 2-3 at Iowa.
• In addition to playing Iowa on Black Friday the past 11 seasons, Nebraska and Iowa also closed the regular season against each other nine times from 1892 to 1916.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-6, 3-8) at Iowa Hawkeyes (5-3, 7-4)
4:00 (Fri) - Iowa City, IA - BTN
It would be pretty funny if the West Division team that generated the most negative ink this year (Iowa), wound up representing the division in Indianapolis for the second straight year, and third time in the past nine years, trailing only Ohio State (4) for appearances in that time frame.  But when Jake Moody made his game winning kick, shortly before Iowa kicked off last weekend, the Hawkeyes took control of their own championship destiny.  Minnesota outgained the Hawkeyes by over 100 yards, dominated time of possession, held Iowa scoreless for over 45 game minutes, and had Mo Ibrahim run for 263 yards.  But Iowa did Iowa things.  Twice in the final 5 minutes, the Gophers were in scoring position, to win the game, and the Hawkeyes forced a fumble at the 9, and an interception at the 33, and then ended a string of 6 empty drives by kicking the winning field goal.  Now all that stands between them and Indianapolis is a Nebraska team that once again found a way to lose a game they had seemingly wrapped up.  It was the Huskers fifth consecutive loss, and they've held fourth quarter leads in 4 of their 8 losses.  After holding the Badgers to 193 yards and 3 points on the game, they surrendered 125 yards and two touchdowns on two fourth quarter drives.  The bigger problem was an offense that looked just as inept, even with the return of Casey Thompson.  Thompson helped the passing game, with a serviceable 12-20 for 106 yards, 2 touchdowns and no picks.  But if you are going to tally just 106 passing yards, you can't combine that with just 65 rushing yards on 2.2 ypc.  While Ibrahim had himself a day last Saturday, the Iowa run defense still remains a solid unit.  While the Nebraska run attack has fallen all the way to #13 in the conference.  With nothing to lose, assuredly not returning to Lincoln next year, and no postseason this year, one would hope Mark Whipple would let Thompson throw it downfield.  The only shot Nebraska has in this one is to let Trey Palmer go wild over the top, like he did against Purdue.  Iowa has dominated this series recently, and while the last four have been close (average margin of victory of 4.8 ppg), the Hawkeyes have won 7 in a row.  Make it 8.
IOWA 31, NEBRASKA 6

Iowa will take on Nebraska without two of its top offensive players. Tight end Sam LaPorta and blocking fullback Monte Pottebaum won’t be available to play against the Huskers.

I am thinking the game will be more like Iowa 17 - Nebraska 14.
If the Nebraska players are no longer along for the ride, and if the assistant coaching staff spends part of the week updating their résumés, it could be worse for the Cornhuskers. It appeared Nebraska had not given up last week against Wisconsin until the 4th quarter (as usual). If Nebraska were not hiring a new Head Coach, the Nebraska defense would be too good to give up 31 to the Hawkeyes’ offense. The only way it could become a 31-6 rout is because this is not an ordinary year for Nebraska football, and its coaching situation.

This has me curious now.  I have watched all the Iowa games this year and I don't remember them playing the fullback as much as Iowa typically has in the past.  Of course my memory is not 100% reliable.  But I wonder if there is a way to look up the percentage of plays where Iowa's offense is playing a fullback.

EDIT:
I tried to look this up.  I saw an article that before the Wisconsin game Pottebaum had played 185 snaps for Iowa.  That was after 9 games.  Iowa's offense I believe averages 53 snaps a game, so they would have around 477 snaps total after 9 games.

So does that mean that Pottebaum has only played on less than 40% of Iowa's offensive plays?

I've watched a handful of the Hawk games

the Fullback isn't on the field much, when he is, many times he's noticed by the announcer

maybe he should be playing more?

couldn't hurt

Nebraska vs. Iowa Prediction: Hawkeyes Look to Clinch Big Ten West With Another Win Over the Cornhuskers

Iowa can make it back-to-back Big Ten Championship Game appearances with an eighth straight win in the battle for the Heroes Trophy.

Logic and reason say this ends up being an easy two-score win for the Ferentz family. But college football is weird sometimes. Maybe the Thanksgiving tryptophan hits differently or Iowa understandably chalks this up as a cakewalk. Either way, embrace the chaos.

Prediction: Nebraska 19, Iowa 16

the annual SCHEELS “Heroes Game” recognizes local heroes who inspire others and positively impact the community.

This year, the Iowa Hawkeyes are celebrating two heroes from right here in Siouxland, charity auctioneers Randy Stabe of Hinton, Iowa and Clinton Vos of Lawton, Iowa.

The two are longtime Hawkeye fans who volunteer their auctioneer services to nearly 30 nonprofits, one big one being the Boys and Girls Club. They have raised millions of dollars nonprofit organizations for more than 25 years.

Happy for Nebraska and it’s fans that they got to experience the joy of a win and play spoiler to Iowa winning the West.

They definitely deserve some good fortune after the last few years they’ve had under Frost. Sounds like they got a coach now too and that Matt Rhule is the guy.

For Iowa, yeah it sucks not winning the west but the more L’s they take and the more games the offense struggles to score points the faster Kirk & Son are going to be shoved out.

I think the BTN stat was Iowa had 7 penalties and 4 TO's, something they haven't had in a decade under Ferentz (or was it ever?)  And then Neb jumped on the opportunities by making big pass plays.

I was pleasantly surprised that Nebraska got as many calls go their way

Kirk wasn't so happy

Brian really is an idiot.  Perhaps the worse O-coordinator I have EVER really thought about.

Iowa's running backs averaged 6 yards a carry last night.

Petras was terrible.  Padilla averaged 3.8 yards per attempt.

It's easy to imagine the Hawks just running over the Husker defense if they didn't pass at all.

39 pass attempts - 33 rushing attempts

Whenever Brian Ferentz tells a joke he immediately follows it up with "No offense"

As in,  hey Brian, you suck as an offensive coordinator,  no offense.
