This tangled mess in the West is making it hard to figure out bowl projections. Anyway here is my guess.
OSU/Mich winner - CFP
OSU/Mich loser - Rose
PSU - Citrus (Orlando)
Purdue - Reliaquest (Outback/Tampa)
Iowa - Duke's Mayo (Charlotte, NC)
Wisc - Music (Nashville)
Minn - Pinstripe (New York City)
ILL - guaranteed Rate (somewhere in Arizona)
MSU - Quick Line (Detroit)
MD - some random bowl that can't fill its spot through its normal tie-ins (Liberty?)
Neb, Rut, Ind, NW - no bowl
Of course Purdue, Iowa, Wisc, Minn and ILL are all interchangeable at thiis point. Iowa has a history of going to Tampa A LOT, so Iowa probably won't go to Tampa. Iowa was supposed to go to the Music Bowl in 2020 but that got canceled due to COVID. Wisc has already been to Duke's Mayo bowl before.
I have been assuming Minnesota was a lock for the Pinstripe because it's the only contender to have never played there. But Minnesota could play itself into a better bowl if it wins out.
MSU, Wisc have not clinched bowl eligibity yet, both need 1 more win, which I am assuming they will get.
Rutgers is still technically alive but needs to win out to make a bowl, which I am assuming they will not.
Neb, Ind, NW are all officially eliminated from being bowl elligible.

Who might PSU face in the Citrus if that is what happens? Ole Miss?
Alabama?
-
Jerry Palm
- FIESTA (CFP) - Ohio State vs. TCU
- ROSE - Michigan vs. USC
- CITRUS - Penn State vs. Ole Miss
- RELIAQUEST (OUTBACK) - Purdue vs. Florida
- MUSIC CITY - Iowa vs. Arkansas
- MAYO - Illinois vs. NC State
- PINSTRIPE - Minnesota vs. Duke
- LIBERTY - Maryland vs. Kansas
- GUARANTEED RATE - Wisconsin vs. Oklahoma
- QUICK LANE - Michigan State vs. Miami(Ohio)

Sounds like the SEC.
-
I think this year in the SEC there are more than two pretty solid teams. They have some flaws of course, like Alabama, but Ole Miss is pretty good and Tenn looks dangerous to me.
-
Are Ole Miss and Bama clearly better than Penn State?
Could LSU score against Iowa?
-
Palm also projects Alabama-Clemson in a NY6 (not CFP) bowl. That might set a record for guys opting out.
I just want to get to a bowl to get the extra practice, and give more guys some run in the game, going into next year. I don't care if it's the Pizza Pizza Bowl. But man, playing a MAC team just feels like a lose-lose.
-
Iowa's offense couldn't score against LSU

I dunno, but I think several SEC teams are pretty decent, more or less akin to Penn State.
Tenn could score on nearly anyone I suspect. They look to be a playoff bound team.
-

I dunno about that. The LSU defense isn't that great, and neither is their ST.
-
the defense just has to trot out onto the field and line up
now if special teams gave Iowa's offense a short enough field enough times.........

Could spin it as a win-win.
-Win the game: hey, winning is nice
-Lose: our coaches were focused on recruiting and players didn’t care. This means nothing.
(Man am I still pissed Wisconsin couldn’t make this a slightly moot point)
-
Bama-Clemson will have some heavy opt outs indeed. They might as well start their twos.
I was chuckling a bit about Jermaine Burton who left UGA to play for Bama, for some reason, more targets I guess. He has 375 yards vs 497 for all of last year. They have three games left, so he should pass 500. Yay.
-
With the 12 game playoff apparently in the cards fairly near term, will these bowls persist? It means some extra practice. The outcomes won't really be of much note but some teams would finish 10-3 instead of 9-4.
I think using the AP rankings as of now we'd have:
Oregon at Tenn - interesting game really
PSU at LSU
Utah at USC meh
Clemson at Bama
"They" would probably change that third matchup.
-
Bama may have some players opting out next Saturday
-
Yup, I'd be thinking about it were I draftable. Bryce Young?
-
Looking at CFP rankings there is a possibility PSU could make it into a NY6 game if they win out and other things break right.
One possibility is that both Mich and OSU make it into the CFP final 4, in which case PSU will go to thevRose Bowl.
Another possibility is Ga and Tenn make it into the CFP while Bama loses to Auburn. In that case, PSU has a good shot at the Orange Bowl. If PSU gets the Orange, then the ACC gets the Big Ten's spot in Reliaquest bowl, so nothing much changes in the bowl pecking order except Purdue might move up to the Citrus instead of going to Tampa.
But most likely, PSU could get the last slot in the Cotton Bowl, depending on how things play out in the PAC and Big 12.
If PSU ends up in the Rose or Cotton, then everybody in the Big Ten gets bumped up 1 spot in the bowl pecking order, which could be bad news for the Big Ten's overall bowl record.

Unless the tOSU/M loser sneaks into the CFP, we'll probably find out how PSU compares to the SEC's second tier in the Citrus.
As I see it the SEC is simply deeper. The SEC's second tier is Bama, LSU, OleMiss. The B1G's is Penn State.

The thing is, that might be great for both teams in terms of preparation for 2023.
-
Tennessee seems to have a very good shot at the CFP. It helps of course if TCU loses and UGA wins out. I doubt the Vols lose at USCe or with Vandy.
The bowl games usually don't tell us that much these days especially. Imagine Penn State beats say Ole Miss 27-24, it would seem to suggest they are comparable, presuming the opt outs weren't sign.

That is true, the SEC is much deeper than the Big Ten with Tier2 teams. Yet PSU has surged ahead of OleMiss, Oregon, UCLA to #11 in the latest CFP rankings. But still behind LSU, Bama, USC, Utah.
So if PSU wins out, they may have a good chance at a NY6 bowl anyway. Which would probably make the Big Ten's bowl record much worse because every Big Ten would move up 1 spot. Unless PSU goes to the Orange, then the Big Ten loses its bid to the Reliaquest Bowl, so that is kind of a wash.
Of course PSU could still lose one of their final 2 games, in which case any chance of a NY6 bowl will be gone.

Cheez-It is getting another piece of the bowl season action and will be the new naming sponsor for a key bowl game between B1G and SEC teams.
Tuesday morning, the Citrus Bowl announced that Cheez-It will be the new sponsor, officially unveiling the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl for this year’s Bowl Season. A new logo was also unveiled, featuring the historical fruit tree with the name positioned on top of a Cheez-It square.
The Citrus Bowl was most recently sponsored by Vrbo from 2019-22.

I use them as well
they get soggy quicker

Will bowls survive a 12 team playoff? How many? Some will I think, Citrusy like bowls. I'm not counting the "major bowls" we have today.
-
People really know how to F up a perfectly good bowl of chili.
-
Maybe it's because the chili is not very good?
-
I guess the Cheez-it ingredients aren't completely terrible. I'd still rather just eat a piece of cheese.
