Title: Illinois (7-4, 4-4) at #3 Michigan (11-0, 8-0) Postgame
Post by: Mdot21 on November 13, 2022, 09:27:42 PM
the penultimate to THE GAME and the final home game of the season for the Wolverines. Hard to believe the season is already almost over. Illinois star RB Chase Brown seems to have injured himself badly last week, questionable as to if he'll even play in this one. Michigan opens as 17 point favorites.

Hopefully these guys are locked in and not taking anything for granted and not looking ahead to the huge showdown in Columbus. Has to be ridiculously hard not to- these are 18-21 year old kids after all- and it's shaping up to be #2 vs #3 and the biggest showdown since 2006. Kinda sucks both those years that Michigan actually decides to get their sh*t together happens to be years that game is in Columbus.

Chase Brown was injured in the final minute of the game. No injury update, but from all appearances, it is a serious leg injury. He did not bear weight on his right leg coming off the field.
Illinois came into the Purdue game with several other injuries, and are playing at the 3rd string level at one cornerback position. Illinois was not deep to begin with, and as injuries pile up with a team like Illinois it has a much more devastating effect in conference play than when injuries pile up for teams like Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State.
Michigan has to give effort, but injury to Chase Brown would seem to be devastating for a team that relies so heavily on his skill.

unfortunately i think you are right. Michigan's red zone issues seem to be getting worked through, but their downfield passing attack remains an achilles heel. IF they were just a touch better there, I'd be more confident in a road win in Columbus. As it stands, think it'll be a close one but OSU pulls away in the 4th.

if Chase Brown is done for the year Illinois is going to have a tough time winning another game imo. He was basically 99% of their entire offense.

The theme assigned this week to the media covering Michigan seems to be Michigan's passing game.  Many feel there is a problem with it.  Joel Klatt poses the question is Michigan is harming JJ McCarthy's development by not passing enough?

I'd guess Michigan is harming JJ's development.

But it's not the lack of reps or attempts

It's about the "whisperer"!!!

Well, they do finish with Northwestern. It's in Evanston, but Illinois will fill it up for them.

YUP. The problem is his head coach. I think Jeem maybe coaches QBs to be like he was as a player- to his limitations. Well the game and the passing game has evolved DRASTICALLY since Jeem was a player- and he was a decent player but never a great one. JJ can do a lot of things from a physical standpoint that Jeem just couldn't do.

Putting aside the fact that the situational football and play calling SUCKS and is mind boggling for long stretches- Michigan does NOTHING to get McCarthy or any of it's QBs ever really into a rhythm or get them easy completions. Where are the smoke screens to the WR's out wide when the corner is playing 10 yards off? Where are the bubble screens to the slot WRs? Where is the TE screen? Where are the RB screens? SHOOT those were effective STAPLES of Michigan offenses under Lloyd Carr in the 90s and 00s. Where are the goal line fade routes/jump balls in the red zone? Those were STAPLES of Michigan's offense in the 90s and 00s. They are literally non-existent in Harbaugh's offense. I'm not saying you have to do this all the time- but hey can you like maybe try it out ONCE IN A BLUE FKN MOON?

The WR talent is not good enough either. Ronnie Bell is basically a poor man's Steve Breaston. Bell doesn't have the 4.4 speed or crazy open field moves that Breaston had- and he's got all the same issues in terms of being too skinny, not physical enough, can't go up and get tough contested 50/50 jump balls, and struggles tracking the ball and getting open on the deep post and go routes. That's their best WR- that they actually play a lot and try to feature- and it's a huge problem right now for the passing game. Cornelius Johnson is just bad at football and I love Roman Wilson because of his elite 4.3 speed but he can only run the go route- he's been hurt a lot this year- and they aren't really featuring on the deep shots. Most of the deep shots have been to other guys the past 5-6 weeks.

as much as I want to sh*t on Jeem it's hard though....this little turn around he's pulled off is impressive and never saw it coming.

Michigan is 22-2 in it's last 24 games under Harbaugh, with the only losses coming by 4 pts on the road to one of it's rivals (MSU) that finished the year ranked #9 and to the National Champs Georgia.

If he beats the Illini, he'll be 23-2 in his last 25 games. That's nothing to sneeze at. And not at all what I thought was possible after that disastrous 2020 COVID season from hell he had.

they might just win it two years in a row. Their OL is better this year despite having to replace it's C and RT.

LT Ryan Hayes, LG Trevor Keegan, and RG Zak Zinter all returned and are playing at higher level than they were a year ago. That's to be expected a'course, especially with Keegan and Zinter who were first time starters last year. The transfer C from Virginia Olu Oluwitami was everything he was hyped up to be as runner up to the Rimington Award last year- guy is a BEAST and a massive upgrade over the walk-on center they had last year. He is the best center to play at Michigan in YEARS. What a gift that was to land him in the portal. Those 4 guys are all going to be drafted by the NFL, and they have been so good it almost doesn't matter who the RT is- Karsen Barnhart or Trente Jones- the other 4 guys just "got it".

Illinois Fighting Illini (4-3, 7-3) at #3 Michigan Wolverines (7-0, 10-0)
NOON - Ann Arbor, MI - ABC
A couple weeks ago this looked like a surprising major game.  Illinois just had to beat a couple of middling Big Ten teams (Michigan State and Purdue) at home, and would roll in at 9-1, ranked in the top 10.  Hell, we could be a Michigan win in Columbus away from seeing them rematch two weeks later in Indianapolis.  Instead, the Illini dropped both games.  The problem isn't so much the offense, which has essentially held up the same pace.  But the defense, which had allowed just 42 total points over their previous 6 games (7.0 ppg), with a high of 14 against Minnesota, gave up 54 over those two games.  Now they have to go to Ann Arbor to face Michigan in a series that has all but disappeared in the 14 team Big Ten.  These two teams have only played twice since 2012.  Illinois does have a little bit of history of going into Ann Arbor, and mucking things up for Michigan, at least in the 90s.  In 1992, Illinois tied #3 Michigan 22-22, which cost a Michigan team that wound up 9-0-3 a shot at a shared national title.  Michigan was 8-0-1 that week, with a trip to Columbus to follow.  Sound familiar?  The following year, a bad Illinois team upset #13 Michigan in Ann Arbor a week after the Wolverines beat #7 Penn State in Happy Valley.  And finally in 1999, Illinois scored 28 unanswered points to erase a 27-7 lead for Tom Brady #9 Michigan, and pull out a 35-29 win, which cost Michigan a Big Ten title.  We will see if Illinois plays with more desperation now that they no longer control their divisional title aspirations.  Likewise, now that this isn't a showdown between top 10 teams anymore, can Michigan avoid the look ahead?  The Maryland win was probably the only game where Michigan didn't look sharp, but they had gotten off to slow starts recently, before pulling away in the second half.  Not so last week, as the Wolverines scored the first 14 points, and outscored Nebraska 17-3 in the first half, and 17-0 in the second.  Blake Corum continues to put up big numbers, running for 162 yards on 5.8 ypc.  His longest run was just 12 yards, he did it by consistently picking up 5+ yard chunks.  The only potential issue right now for the Michigan offense is J.J. McCarthy, who has completed under 50% of his passes in back to back games...against Rutgers and Nebraska.  If the Illini offense is back in form, and they can get Michigan into 3rd and longs, that might be worth watching.  Illinois running back Chase Brown, the nation's leading rusher, not only has to play, but be damned close to 100% for this Illinois offense to have a prayer of moving the ball.  It sounds like he is going to play, which I never expected to hear.  But it won't be nearly enough.
MICHIGAN 31, ILLINOIS 12

honestly kinda amazes me that Mason Graham wasn't a 5* DT recruit or near it. Kid has been playing amazing as an 18 year old true freshman at DT. Probably should've seen it coming as he absolutely dominated both ways for 3 years on the OL and DL vs the toughest competition- the SoCal Trinity Leauge- in all of HS football. USC and Oregon were trying harrrrd to flip him last NSD.

only a 3*...lol. Kenneth Grant 6'4, 356 pound true frosh DT.....freakishly big and freakishly strong....saw this dude up close and personal in the Penn State game...he looks fkng terrifying in person. a dude that big should not be that long and slender. he's nearly 360 pounds and he doesn't look overly fat or like he has a huge gut. he straight up looks like an NFL DT as an 18 year old freshman.

I think it's fair to say this is the best true freshman DT class I've seen Michigan pull maybe ever....

can’t tell you how much I miss the Gatorama reports. He was my primary draw to this group early on. Always regret not making the effort to go meet him at one of his trips. The private messages on life advice both personally and professionally were incredibly impactful to the young version of me trying to find the right path. He always set the right tone for our board. Another tunnel incident!

Michigan was the first out of the locker room at halftime.  Officials and security held Illinois in their locker room until Michigan was out of the tunnel.  Officials had to add two minutes to half time so Bret’s head wouldn’t explode.

Bad game changing calls all around.  Fourth down and Illinois lined up off sides which was not called.  Bogus drive killing hold called on Michigan's LG.
