Title: SOC 2022-11-05: How the West was won
Post by: 847badgerfan on November 05, 2022, 07:19:10 AM
We start to sort things out today, with Purdue-Iowa and Minnie-Little Red going at it. UI and UW play crossovers.

Not really any food plans today as we are going out tonight. I'm thinking maybe depression dogs.

Gonna head to the gym soon and then hit the range to work in a new rifle. Probably mix in a little body defender practice too.

Checking in from Lincoln. Going to get breakfast in a bit, then head down to meet Fearless and his motley band of ne'er do wells.

Weather is very pleasant. Low 30s at the start but warming up as the day goes on with plenty of sunshine. Driving out of the storm system yesterday on 80 at sundown felt like driving into the apocalypse.

Stayed up too late watching the Pac 12 game. Trying to motivate myself to get in a little run before I have to head to the bar to watch the badger game.

Overcast here all day apparently, and in Athens too I guess, no rain apparently, it's possible.  Black coffee as usual.  Managed to sleep fairly late.  Headed to Vancouver, BC Tuesday to see daughter.  Rainy there the whole trip sans one day, with snow possible.

Game of the Century again today?

I saw somewhere this is the highest ranked pairing every played in Sanford Stadium.  In 1942, # 5 UGA played #2 Ga Tech (and won handily 34-0).  They played #3 Alabama earlier at Grant Field for some reason in Atlanta (and won).

Checking in from Southern California. Was out at the bars later than I meant to be last night (11PM) buying shots of Jameson with a Humboldt County hippie chick (it’s California) but woke up just fine. Plan today is to head up the road to my brother’s to watch Tennessee-Georgia. Him and his wife will probably invite me to stay for a few more hours to catch at least the first half of FSU-Miami and Clemson-Notre Dame. For lunch I’m bringing along the Trader Joe’s pizzas they’ve come to like since trying gluten free (it’s California). Before heading up I need to clean up my place, load/run the dishwasher, and sort out the aluminum cans from my trash for leaving with the homeless neighbors on my block to refund (it’s California). After a week of dropping temperatures and rain, the weather is sunny enough to tan again (it’s California).

Anyway, enough of California. On Monday I returned from my East Coast trip, stopping through Indianapolis, Richmond VA, and Auburn/Montgomery AL and thought I’d share a few autumnal scenes we don’t quite experience in the Southwest.

Didn't miss the target with 48 rounds out of the S&W defender. I wish it was 9mm instead of .380 auto though. the latter is too expensive right now.

The AR shot great. Decent kick but not horrible. The 556 NATO rounds fire nicely.

They spotted that where the ball crossed the plane of the sideline but the player isn't out of bounds until he touches the ground out of bounds and by then he had that by at least a yard.

Baby back and brisket- smoked them yesterday eve, wrapped in foil and towel amd held in yeti until a few minutes ago where they're on the grill at 200* to get them back to serving temperature... it was close as it was so it won't be long...

Cowboy beans set, tater salad and jalapeño corn bread inbound...

Kickoff at 330... same spread as the bama game... I dropped a half gallon of jack daniels old #7 during the bama game (well, between kickoff and midnight)... I have a fifth today in its stead...  I rarely drink but when I do? Clear a path...

Last time I rushed the ribs and brisket.  The taste was there but a little too much tug on the ribs. The bones are jumping out of these... I haven't sliced the brisket yet, but man it looks and smells superb.  It's just a flat brisket not a packer... I was SO tempted to take a slice off it last night.

For as rancid as the Gophers have played, only down 10-0 is a win. That last series have showed that the Huskers are out of scripted plays.

Gophers have lost 32 in a row when down 10 or more.

Iowa at Purdue

17-0 mid 2nd quarter

Quarterback stats:

10/15 182 yards 2 TD

6/13 76 yards 2 INT

Never would imagine it's Iowa and Spencer freaking Petras putting up the better numbers.

Only the Purdue defense could make the Iowa offense look this good.

Tua Jr ain’t my boy, and I think it’s fair to say he’s having a bad game but he is a better QB than Mertz. I’ve seen a ton of sucky QB play over the past decade as a Michigan fan. I know a crappy QB when I see one. Mertz is one of them. Mertz blows.

Well that clinches a win for the Buckeyes but they aren't going to get any "style points" for this.

My "glass half full" view is that if you are going to have a terrible game you could hardly do better than to have it against this year's Mildcats.

Why does UGA's band just blare noise until the snap of the ball?  It's really annoying.  Not music, not a school song, just blaring noise.

Well that clinches a win for the Buckeyes but they aren't going to get any "style points" for this.

My "glass half full" view is that if you are going to have a terrible game you could hardly do better than to have it against this year's Mildcats.
OSU couldn't throw and Fitzgerald sold out to stop the run - credit. Then the rain came down in buckets, not a great day for an offense either way,Stoud actually had a nice run

Stetson Bennett is a big game player man. Dude elevates in big moments. That was an amazing escape from a blitz that had him dead to rights and he runs it in for the score.

Georgia is looking real impressive early.

Thread for another day, but the amount of game time 'scratches' has gotten much worse.    Lots of claims that legalized gambling would make injury reporting more transparent.  I'd argue it has worsened.  Israel Abanikanda a game time scratch today among some others I've noticed.

I mean, that guy's about 4points on the line.  I'm guessing 100 people knew.     Very fishy and this is not isolated to Israel today.

That was already true to a degree    If they lose one of the next 2 but beat Michigan and win the CCG- they will be in.  But other than that they were never getting in without beating UM and winning the conference.

Also- let’s not over react to a game played in 30 mph hour winds with 50 mph gusts, and sideways rain.

I don’t understand Michigan State’s roster. Looked so full of holes in uncompetitive losses to Washington, Minnesota, and Maryland.

Then today teams up and overpowers a ranked Illinois home team with the added disadvantage of four or five starters suspended. In any case, it was a big advantage to the Spartans that Illinois didn’t (or couldn’t) attack their secondary. MSU’s pass rush dominated the 4th quarter.

Faith restored in Mel Tucker.

Special Teams have been the difference in this game.

Jake Moody- the best kicker that’s ever played at Michigan and who is basically automatic- missed 2 FGs.

Brad Robbins had one of his punts blocked and returned by this shitbag New Jersey trash team returned for a TD.

Moody hits his freaking kicks and Robbins just gets his punts off it’s 20-10 at half, Michigan. But nope, it’s 17-14, Rutgers.

I don't think he's bad, the problem is there is no learning ground.  There is no ESPN+ for P5 programs.  It's baptism by fire.  It sucks that he's doing a game everyone can see, but he seems like a guy that just needs reps, and where is he going to get them?

I wouldn’t say DJ is bad. He just isn’t good. He does most things well…but he gets toasted on deep balls. Like wayyyyy too much and wayyyy too often.

Re: Will Johnson- I’d agree his HS tape was not otherworldly special, but then again it was mostly him playing WR. Feel like HS teams probably avoided him at CB.

Will Johnson looks like a 5* CB when you see him in person. He is impressive looking athlete on the hoof. Having said that- he missed an easy tackle this game which sprung a Rutgers WR free for a huge gain.

Donovan Edwards is the best player on the Michigan offense. That TD catch was an insane catch for a RB to make. He’s a future 1st round nfl draft pick.

They need to feature him a lot more often. He’s very Marshall Faulk like. I know that sounds crazy and insane to say, but I think it’s true. His route running and ball skills for a RB are insane. Insane.

Nah. They have negative rushing yards. They were lucky to even be ahead. Flukey punt block return for td and Michigan’s Mr Automatic kicker shanking two FG’s = them being up by 3.

Michigan is a 2nd half team, Minter makes adjustments and Michigan looks like a different team in 2nd half’s of games. Michigan about to open a can of whoop ass in this 2nd half I think.

I hate michigans WR’s. Why can’t they make any fkn plays? Hit Ronnie bell on the money in stride and he can’t hang on…wtf

Cornelius Johnson and Ronnie Bell need to hit the bench.

Give Andrel Anthony, Amorion Walker, and Darius Clemons a fair shot.

Cornelius Johnson and Ronnie Bell are overrated af by Michigan fans. These are average receivers who don’t do anything elite. Johnson fkn has butter fingers and Bell is a pussy with the strength of a 120 pound woman.

Insane.
Donovan Edwards might be the best non QB Big Ten player since Ted Ginn

I would love to watch a breakdown of the Wake Forest offense, because it's efficient, and puts up a lot of points, but when I watch it, I don't get how they are out scheming everyone

Ronnie Bell is seriously a pussy. He has no strength. He can’t snatch contested balls.

I’d kill for a Braylon or David Terrell at WR right about now.

Good game in Baton Rouge. Once Bryce Young threw that first quarter pick in the end zone, and the home crowd reacted in kind knowing LSU wasn’t playing scared, I knew Alabama was in for a long battle.

Amazing to see how a little player development has done wonders for Jayden Daniels. He was an effective QB at ASU but never improved beyond what he was as a true freshman.

don’t look now, but with Corum going over 100+ and 2 TD’s and the Heisman leader Hooker having a stinker and the #2 guy Stroud also having a stinker- Corum could legit sneak his way into the Heisman race.

If Corum has another 100+ yard game with a score or two vs Nebraska and Illinois and then just goes nuclear vs OSU- he’ll have a real shot at it.

Problem was - evidently - it shouldn't have got there.A good friend watched the whole game and isn't one to pick on the refs said some of the calls were like the SEC was trying to get the Tide the "V".Checked some message boards and many posters were basically saying the same thing

CFB is the bomb.
I'm not sure what other sport really has this kind of drama for an entire day of the week.

Every game counts, the underdogs come up with great efforts, QBs can play insanely or crap out, Texas looks pretty good one week and not the next, Bama loses twice in a season!, Oklahoma falls to pieces like a Patsy Cline song, Nebraska fires its coach, NW hangs in against OSU in "inclement" weather, Rutgers sticks around a half and then gets wasted, UCLA comes in unheralded and is 8-1 now, Oregon gets torched in Game One and is 8-1 now ...

There likely won't be 30-50mph consistent winds with rain going sideways in 3 weeks.I  take it you didn't watch the contest in Evanston.CJ is shooting for 3 things - November 26,December 3,the CFPs.Anything else is window dressing, and I'm betting Corum won't be going nuclear if the the skunk bears get behind early in C-Bus.I don't think CJ will be having a stinker then
