Probably because the NFL has scared ESPN away from showing halfway decent games on Thursday night, but we never got this thread going this year. It's a horrible game, but having Virginia vs Georgia tech on Thursday night is like a bowl of your mother's chicken noodle soup. It just tastes like nostalgia
-
Every Thursday WVU game has been great. This matchup isn't as exciting.
-
I'd much rather watch Thursday night college ball then the crap the NFL plays on Thursdays.
-
I'm watching

Same

THHe. YANKEES LOSE. Yeah, I'm watching that game too.
-
me too
I think GT is out of chances
unless blocked punt or punt return
-
GT dropping the option irks me for many reasons, but a big one is that their Thursday games could at least get kinda weird.
It's also wild how their pace obscured some fairly interesting half-teams (better offense than you thought, much worse defense), but that's another story.
-
They injured a lot of players with the PJ offense in their day. I hated it.
Of course now they are trying to play standard football and have zero shot.

what if they hire Deion Sanders?
-
Prime don't know the option offense
-
Deion would up their recruiting, obviously, but Tech has some basic core academic requirements that will limit that significantly. They do offer a kind of three year "plan" that avoids some of these requirements. You'd never get a degree of course that way. Maybe they could contrive another major like "consumer economics" (remember when the TV would show player majors?). Last I heard, everyone there had to take calculus to graduate.
They have that doddering old crappy stadium and outdated equipment that still would exist.
-
yup, Prime knows better than to take that crap job

From what I've heard (mainly from Andy Staples) is not the admissions requirements, schools can generally get around that, but that GT doesn't have majors to hide kids in once they are there. Keeping kids eligible is the real obstacle.
-
Yeah, Tech does that as well, but the players have zero shot at graduation for the most part. If they are elite, they can choose an SEC school or Clemson etc. and have at least a pathway to some kind of degree, if they are academically challenged. It may be consumer economics, whatever that is.
In my day, it was "Spanish".
-
This is why I'd favor UGA dropping Tech on the schedule. The SEC is going to 9 conference games eventually, leaving three left for OOC of course, if one is Tech, it limits options for playing the Wisconsins and Ohio States of the world.
(UGA already had to drop their OOC games with Texas and OU for other reasons.)
I really enjoy significant OOC games. Tech isn't one of them.

this can be easily remedied
if the admin really cares about football
-
I doubt the Admin at Tech has sufficient interest in changing the Rules, and I'm not sure it would help much anyway. Put Prime at Tech as a draw, great, he would attract a few players I think on style points alone, and maybe lose a few to academic stuff, but largely, players are going to look harder at programs with a proven track record and facilities.

NC State-Virginia Tech tonight. Now that's the crappy ACC Thursday Night content I like to see

This is the Thursday night content I'm here for. I feel like the games were always bad, we were just so starved for football off Saturday, we didn't care

How did Virginia Tech fall off so hard, so fast?
-
Utah at Wazzu underway in fs1. That's a swell match-up. No rising tonight.

Shutdown Fullcast noted that since the SWC-Big XII merger, Wazzu has more 9 win seasons than Texas A&M

That VT lead vanished quickly.

And that's inclusive of the Paul Wulff tenure.

Turned out they had a really good coach, then made the right hire that REALLY didn’t work.
And now I think they made the wrong hire.
-
I quit watching at half time.
-
you missed the good half
-
And we are back to garbage. It's a World Series night for sure
-
Saturday holds some promise for not being garbage. We're obviously getting to where "every game counts".
I was musing about how if my Dawgs don't make the playoffs, it will seem to many like a lost season, even if they play in a NY6. Fire Coach Smart!!!

Pac 12 with a nice offering tonight.

Might as well witness Midweek Garbage

USC is smoking Colorado.
UNLV and Fresno are in a dogfight.
-
Pretty sure Toledo clinched the Mac West this week.
The East is still up in the air, with Ohio in the drivers seat.
-
USC is smoking Colorado.
They're usually smoking something out there
-
Well yeah, but Colorado is the one that is supposed to be doing the smoking. Not getting smoked.
-
Maybe Colorado sucks because they are always stoned.
-
Colorado just SUCKS because they are colorado
they have a cow for a mascot

Some good stuff Tuesday night.
Ohio reached 9-3 by topping BG with a MAC East title on the line. Just remarkable how fast that Bobcats program has bounced back from the Solich departure.
Elsewhere, Ball State and Miami played for a bowl spot. Ball State went up 17-3 and seemed in position to rely on a good run game. Instead the RedHawks rallied with two TDs in the final 6:13.
No Wednesday games, which I think is normal, but can't recall. Soon enough it'll be Egg Bowl nonsense time and then a loaded and weird Friday, a day where I told family I'd spend time with them instead of being a football degenerate.
-
Speaking of midweek garbage football, Vikings-Patriots from the Viking Ship is the Thanksgiving nightcap.
I'd rather watch the Egg Bowl than Vikings-Patriots.
-
if Belichick blitzs Cousins every play, I won't be watching very long

The Vikings will be wearing their Primetime Purple uniforms for their Thanksgiving matchup against the Patriots on Thursday

was Frankie replaced by an assistant that was on his staff?
or did they go out and make a splash hire?
-
Can you make a splash hire in the MAC?

apparently a better splash than Frost to UNL

I love it having Thanksgiving Night to itself

Watching Florida/Florida State.
First, given my age it is weird to watch these two with one unranked and the other #16.
Second, these announcers are awful. Florida picked up a 3rd and long but it got called back due to a holding call against a Florida OL. It was a good call but an irrelevant hold because it was behind the play.
A couple plays later FSU stopped UF on a 4th and REALLY long but UF got the first down on a PO call. The PI was completely legit but the announcers were apoplectic. The one guy repeatedly said to let them play.
Ok, if we are going to let them play then don't call the holding or the PI. There are rules and both calls were legit.

I loved it when UT-A&M had Thanksgiving night to itself. Sadly those days are long past.
-
perhaps the SEC could fix that
-
perhaps the SEC could fix that
Maybe so. I suspect that ship has sailed, though.
The main thing keeping it on T-day proper all of those years, was the inertia of the tradition. Once that was gone, I think it' hard to go back. I mean, having a game on actual Thanksgiving Day is a huge pain in the ass in many ways. We just accepted it for all those years, because we valued the tradition.

yup, I'm not sure about getting recruits to the stadium on that evening, but the national TV audience with great ratings is always good for recruiting and promoting the product
-

As you'll probably recall, it was on T+1 for most of the early years of the B12, alternating the early/late timeslot with Nebraska-Colorado. The fans clamored to move it back to T-day night, and so we brought it back for a few years right before the ags left, but it wasn't the same. From a personal perspective, it made me realize just how difficult it was to navigate the entire day, trying to balance family time, with the game itself. Especially since we still ran at least a stripped-down version of the tailgate party for that game. And it was even more difficult when the game was in College Station, having to leave lunch early and traveling the 2 hours to reach Kyle Field. When I was a student and recent graduate, I didn't care as much about missing out on the family time. But now that I'm older, it matters more to me.
Anyway, I'd figure it out if they ever decided to move it back, but it does present its own unique challenges.
-
yup, as I'm older I don't go to the black friday husker game nearly as often
of course some of that is the product on the field, but......
-
In the 4th quarter after Ewers basically gave the game away with that ridiculous fumble-6, I'm not sure we threw the ball again. And surprise surprise-- it worked.
Moving this discussion from today's SOC thread to the proper thread for yesterday's games.
And, I was right. Here are Texas' offensive stats from the next play after Ewers' fumbled scoop-and-score for Baylor, through the end of the game, which was the final 13:30 of the 4th quarter:
22 plays
22 rushes
133 yards
14 points
TOP 10:43
That's just complete domination. 'Twas joyous to see.

We chatted a bit on the Purdue thread about this. My idea for these lesser bowl games is to treat them as developmental in nature. Play your starting lineup for next year, mostly. Sure, if a senior wants to play, accomodate him. Let's say this pushes your bowl loss rate from 50% to 70%, does it push some games next season from 50% to 55%?
I'd treat opt outs as a plus. Tell them they can come with the team and have fun and not play, or they can go "prepare" if they wish.
We know back in the day, bowl games were exhibitions anyway.

Gators got woodshedded by the Beavs 30-3,didn't see that coming. All the in state talent and no one seemingly wants to take the reigns,Noles,Gators,Canes he even UCF.Evidently FLA hit 40-yard field goal with 37 seconds left finally put the Gators on the scoreboard,
