I found that interesting.  He lists the teams with a "chance" of winning the NC in 2017:

Alabama’s 80 percent is the highest I’ve seen since I began publishing this piece. But it’s not a surprise when Nick Saban is literally convincing top-100 players to grayshirt (https://www.sbnation.com/college-football-recruiting/2017/2/1/14456310/jarez-parks-alabama-national-signing-day-2017).

• Ohio State is a a clear No. 2, six percentage points ahead of everyone else, but still nine behind the Tide.

• Though they have had different levels of success of late, due to coaching, LSUand Florida State are typically the teams mentioned after the Tide and Buckeyes when the discussion of the most impressive roster comes up.

• Kirby Smart inherited a good Georgia roster from Mark Richt, but his first two classes are humming at 74 percent, while Richt’s final two were at 53. It’s not yet known if Smart can coach, but Georgia’s talent is being upgraded.

• Perhaps the only surprise of the 10 is Notre Dame, and I’ll be interested to see how their talented upperclassmen perform this season. The Irish went 4-8 in 2016, but were one of the least lucky teams in the country (https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2017/5/9/15552022/notre-dame-football-2017-preview-schedule-roster).

They were each on the list of teams that have a chance in those years.


It doesn't narrow it down past ten.

I've read that metric in the past


heck, give you and I a chance to pick a list of ten teams each pre-season and we would do pretty well

Yup.  I think today a decent list would just be the top ten in the polls.


You might flavor that with something on recruiting, but a great recruiting class last year is not going to help as much as one 2-3 years ago obviously.


It's interesting to review I think. 


Three of the final four are likely in the top ten preseason polls and one is likely in the second ten.

I'm a big believer in recruiting rankings- but not for all positions. For example, I put only some stock into rankings for QB's, and as far as OL goes- I put next to zero stock in the recruit rankings for OL. OL recruiting is a complete crapshoot.

I think for the most part WR, RB, CB, and DL are accurate. Those positions are for the most part just pure athlete/raw talent/instinct. I mean anybody can look at a Clowney or Bosa or Rashan Gary and be like that's a 5* DL. Doesn't take a rocket scientist.

I remember reading years ago that OL is the position that traditionally performs the best on the Wonderlic test during NFL prep. I think OL and QB are the positions that require the most understanding of the game. For the OL, you are part of a 5-person team that needs to understand assignments, understand the defense, etc. And obviously QB requires understanding how to read the coverages and make mental decisions far more than physical decisions.
