Title: #4 Michigan (6-0, 3-0) at Indiana (3-3, 1-2) Postgame
Post by: Temp430 on October 03, 2022, 08:06:35 AM
The game is at Noon EDT this Saturday and on Fox.  Michigan is favored by 21.5 points in this game.  Indiana has given Michigan some trouble recently, beating the Wolverines the last time they played in Bloomington 21-38.  So, Michigan better not look past the Hoosiers and get trapped with Penn State on the slate Oct. 15th.  Michigan players potentially out due to injury include TE All, backup QB McNamare, WR Wilson, and LB Hill-Green.

Michigan by as many points as they want. The right side of the Hoosier O-line is a turnstile. I just hope the IU QBs are able to walk out of the stadium after the game.

would love to see Michigan work in Andrel Anthony and Donovan Edwards into the passing game this game and really try to get it clicking before they have to take on Penn State at home. JJ made a big jump in Week 1 to Week 2 of B1G play, I was impressed how he went on the road into a hostile environment vs a very good defense and didn't try to force passes or play that hero-ball crap and run around behind the LOS unnecessarily thinking he has to make every play some amazing play like he did vs Maryland the week before. He passed the test in my eyes- JJ didn't put the ball in harms way vs Iowa at all- and that's a defense that THRIVES on QB mistakes. He did have the one fumble- but on rewatch I can't blame him 100% for that play- Trente Jones the new starting RT absolutely played like horseshit on that play- he tried to go inside and double team an Iowa DT with Zinter and he completely left the Iowa edge rusher unblocked and gave him a free hit on the QB- and that dude ran full speed, completely unblocked and absolutely blew up JJ. Can't do that. Jones has been having pass protection gaffes all season to be honest- and if he doesn't clean that up he needs to hit the bench.

JJ leads the nation in completion percentage at 78.5%, he's 5th in the nation in yards per attempt, he's 5th in the nation in NFL QB Rating at 186.9, and he's 12th in the nation in ESPN QBR. He worked on not playing hero ball and protecting the ball week 1 to week 2. Now he's got to work on hitting his go routes- he's missed 4 that were surefire TD's where his WR's just burnt the DBs crispy on go routes and were wide open- 3 vs Maryland and 1 vs Iowa. He cleans that aspect of his game up and starts getting the timing down with his receivers their offense will go to the next level.

Michigan has yet to scratch the surface of where this offense can go. JJ needs to continue to improve and start connecting on his go routes and they need to work Andrel Anthony and Donovan Edwards into the passing game and get starting TE Erick All back and this offense could really just take off into the stratosphere.

those go deep routes have an affect on the defense even if JJ doesn't connect

when the D coaches and the safeties see that WR behind them and open, it puts the fear of God in them all.

true. but if he connects on just 50% of those- those games probably turn into blowouts. He can't keep going 0-fer on those. He's going to have to start connecting on around half of them if you want to beat the better teams...aka PSU/OSU.

Does everyone here think Harbaugh is probably the best offensive mind in all of football?

Lolwut? You back on the sauce grandpa? Tell ya what he’s no Kirby Smart when it comes to offense. Sheesh that guy is good.

The CTE scatterbrained Autistic Booger Eater is god awful when it comes to offensive football. He’s offensive to offense.

Ryan Day is the best offensive mind in college football. And I don’t think it’s particularly close. Lincoln Riley probably 2nd and Sark 3rd.

can't troll a troll brah.

And frankly, I don't even know where gramps is getting off on that...I've been a harsh Harbaugh critic for oh-ever.

ANYTHING that Michigan will EVER accomplish on offense in Harbaugh's entire tenure will be in spite of him- not because of him. Dude is an aspergers booger eating freak from outer-space who has zero clue when it comes to modern offense. Less than zero actually. He's Bo 2.0- except Bo probably didn't have CTE and eat his own Boogers.

don't know about that. he's definitely the #1 weirdo in CFB. don't think that one is particularly close. Kirby seems like the #1 dildo in CFB though. Not sure that one is close either.

Lmao. I will say...he looks like Bill Walsh compared to the Ferentz fam. It's a crime against humanity- the offenses that the Ferentz' make the great people of Iowa have to watch.

couple of plays that highlight just why they had to make that switch to McCarthy and live with his growing pains. Need to see him get better and improve this week vs Indiana. I feel like the only person that can hold McCarthy back from budding into a star is his head coach.

That's an incredible throw...threading the needle between two defenders...that's an NFL throw folks. He has elite arm talent. That "hole shot" type throw is probably 9 out of 10 in terms of difficulty. Not a lot of college QB's can make that throw. Cade simply put, can't make that throw.

That was a bad low snap and broken play and Iowa had an unblocked free rusher and JJ makes the defender miss with his legs, rolls out and throws a dime to the back of the end zone on the run with a little scramble drill with Donovan Edwards for the touchdown. Cade simply put, isn't making that play.

he throws that out route to the sideline better than any QB that I have seen at Michigan since at least Chad Henne. That's where you can really see a QB's arm strength and ball placement. Kid has a freaking gun for an arm and the ball explodes off his hand, his throwing mechanics are excellent and effortless, when he isn't sloppy with his footwork he really just makes difficult throws look easy.

The Detroit News reports Caden Kolesar is out for the season with a knee injury.

In addition, long snapper William Wagner is also out for the season.  All in all a big blow to special teams.

#4 Michigan Wolverines (2-0, 5-0) at Indiana Hoosiers (1-1, 3-2)
NOON - Bloomington, IN - FOX
Michigan went into a building they've had all sorts of issues in last week, and handled business with ease.  The next road trip is a little different.  The Hoosiers won at home in 2020, breaking an 11 game Michigan winning streak in the building, dating back to 1987.  Prior to that, you have to go back to the 50's.  The Indiana win over Illinois seems more and more fluky with each passing week.  I think Tom Allen, if he was being honest, is glad that game is behind him.  The Hoosiers seem to be fading with each week.  Nebraska couldn't stop anyone, particularly on the ground, and the Huskers shut Indiana down, holding them to just 67 rushing yards on under 3 ypc, while nearly doubling their number of sacks (from 4 to 7) on the season.  The second half was even worse, with 7 drives, totaling 61 yards, on 2.1 ypp, with three 3 and outs.  Indiana needs to jump out quickly.  Michigan has had no trouble doing that, scoring on their first drive in both Big Ten wins, taking 7-0 leads before the first commercial.  Their problem has been going into cruise control after that.  Not that Maryland or Iowa ever REALLY threatened them, but they made things more annoying for themselves than they probably needed to.  We wondered if Iowa could much it up enough to be a problem, and they couldn't.  Iowa is the ultimate muck team, and is more talented than Indiana, so the Hoosiers need things to get even sloppier, and aren't nearly Hawkeye level at doing it.  Connor Bazelak will push the ball down the field, so that's the one thing he might be able to threaten Michigan with that Iowa couldn't.  They can't drive on Michigan, but, unlike Iowa, their offense isn't totally reliant it.  Problem is without any semblance of a running game, if Indiana can't force Michigan's safeties to come down, those deep routes won't be there either.
MICHIGAN 35, INDIANA 16

Michigan played a sloppy game on offense and special teams. It was not pretty. The penalties were atrocious as well. Think they'll fix the special teams gaffes and clean up the penalties- but I am seriously concerned about that offense. Yikes.

Michigan defense is rounding into form. Mike Sainistril should NOT be as good as he is at nickel- it's seriously impressive. His instincts, ball skills, and football IQ appear to be off the charts. Eyabi Okie is looking like an absolute steal in the transfer portal. He's been coming alive the past 3 weeks- and he just got to Michigan like a week before the season started- you can definitely see why he was an OMERG FIVE STARZ and the #3 player overall in his class when he signed with Bama. Mike Morris continues to impress and has really improved since last year and is looking like an NFL draft pick at edge. Jaylen Harrell had a really good game setting the edge vs the run and a couple nice pressures. Mazi Smith was a monster in the middle- he's playing himself into being an NFL draft pick every week. What continues to surprise is the play of some true freshman- Mason Graham at DE/DT, DE/EDGE Derrick Moore, and NT Kenneth Grant making plays. Moore kinda makes sense- he was a high 4*, top 50 overall player as a recruit and was the MVP of that HS All-Star Under Armour All-American game. Graham was a 4* but ranked in the mid 250s and Grant was only a 3*. This has been like 3 weeks in a row vs B1G opponents that their pass rush has just absolutely taken over games in the 2nd half. Still wish Chris Hinton had stuck around to give them more depth inside and my lord if Ojabo had stuck around their pass rush rotation would've been scary good. Kinda crazy that Braiden McGregor- a top 100 overall player as a HS recruit and once upon a time OMG FIVE STARZ before he had a nasty injury which causes him to miss his SR year of HS seems to have been passed over by Eyabi Okie who just got here a week before the season and by Derrick Moore- a true frosh. Was expecting a lot more from McGregor- even though he did get a sack to put the nail in the coffin on Indiana- he's been getting less and less snaps at edge Okie and Moore have been getting more and more.

JJ McCarthy in 5 starts….

78.3% pass completion, 1,152 passing yards, 9 TD vs 1 INT, and 1 rush TD.

Can’t complain as he’s been very efficient but it seems like they’re just trying to make him a souped up Cade McNamara and not really unleashing him or unlocking the offense. It’s kinda annoying. You’d think they’d be taking more down field shots and actually using his legs more.

unleash an inexperienced guy and the INTs might go up while completion percentage probably goes down

use his legs and fumbles go up and getting shoulders banged up if not worse injuries goes way up

save him for PSU and OSU and real threats

Michigan's defensive line which was my largest concern is getting better.    On offense pass protection was very good, the running game with Corum was very good and OK with Edwards.  The referees in this game were the worse I've seen from a Big Ten squad.  Worse than the O'Neill crew in years past.

was discussing college football with a an O-lineman that played for the Hawkeyes years ago and a season or two with the GB PAckers before an injury.

I asked him and his brother what they though of the decline in O-line play overall in college football and the NFL.  They agreed overall.

They also mentioned that Michigan's O-line was pretty good

JJ responded after throwing that pick, didn't turtle up and falter in a one score game on the road. Great sign for a young QB.
