I have no idea what to make of this game. I don't think I'd be surprised with any outcome. Close win by either team. Blowout by either team.
It'll probably end up as something horrifying like Texas being up by 4 TDs in the 4th quarter and still losing. But maybe not.
-
Horns open as a 5 point favorite. Sure, I guess, why not.
Both teams have plenty of talent. Both teams have suspect coaching on one or more sides of the ball.
But when these two teams play, throw out the record books!
-
I usually do a separate thread for the haiku and taunting, but I don't know if this year's game is worthy of a second thread, so I'll just put it here:

Edit: Hmmmm, I can't get an animated gif to play. Ah well, par for the season.
-
Yeah, tough game to call, mainly because these are some schizophrenic teams.
OU's defense looked really nice for a few weeks, and then has faltered back to every problem they ever had under Riley. Texas is still having the head-scratching ups and downs they've exhibited for about 10 years through 3 or 4 coaches.
I don't think I ever recall OU taking a beating like that from TCU. Did K-State beat them twice, or is that just who this Sooner team is? Either way, I expect the Sooners to put in a good showing against UT...I don't think hangovers or looking ahead affects a game like that.
I only watched with half an eye because we were playing at the same time, but Card looked good. Ewers is....possibly unnecessary?....for this game??
-
Card did okay. He is still noticeably limping pretty badly by the end of the game each week.
I'd feel pretty confident if we had Ewers, though admittedly that optimism is based on VERY little observation, just one game against a cupcake, and a little over a quarter against a legitimately good P5 team.
So I don't know if Ewers is "unnecessary" or not. I'd rather have him to start the game but if he's still hurting enough that it would affect his play then it could be a net negative. I don't suspect we'll know until gametime, Sark certainly seems to like to keep such things close to the vest.
Texas' defense played a bit more like they did against Alabama, rather than their poor play against UTSA and Texas Tech. Very inconsistent, just no way at all to predict any kind of trend.
-
I don't know why Texas is only a 5-point favorite. I'd make it more like 15.
I have no expectation of a Sooner victory, but stranger things have happened. A 1-4 Texas beat the Sooners in 2015. And John Blake's Sooners beat Texas in 1996.
Were I Steve Sarkesian (Heaven forbid), I would not start Ewers. He's probably not necessary and a reinjury might put him out for the rest of the season.
-
So, Kansas and K State are 2-0, each, in conference, and OU is 0-2 and Texas a mere 1-1.
I feel like the universe has shifted.

If I were to start Ewers it wouldnt be against OU for various reasons unless of course hes 100% which doesnt look likely

the universe almost shifted against the dogs last Saturday
-
Yes it nearly did.
-
Hudson Card managed his game plan very well on Saturday. He still is conflicted between abandoning the pocket and stepping up into it, which leads to him sort of "double spinning" into sacks. He only did this twice. He overthrew Worthy once, but then hit him in stride the next time.
Ewers has a different game plan. There are more technical, aggressive passes in his book that more fully utilize Texas' weapons. If he's comfortable and practicing at a fearless level, you play him. If he's still feeling effects, or he's not confident, then playing the QB that the receivers have worked with for a month is an easy decision.

Come on man, SEC shorts don't belong on the TX-OU thread, at least not for another year or two.
-
I'm surprised how well they do after a few years, most are quite entertaining. And silly.
Texas a 4 pt fav? Huh.
-
Texas has has won 9 of the last 10 meetings when both teams are unranked.
-
It's Texas all the way. There is definitely something wrong with OU under these coaches. Either that or Lincoln Riley really left the cupboard bare. Maybe both.
-
And now, as is tradition, some sooner haiku:
first down, second down
sing boomer sooner again
third down, fourth down, punt
-
Texas trees bend north
Their resistance is futile
Oklahoma sucks

Hark, the distant sound
Mobile homes being loaded
Toothless invasion

Pity the dentist

Bankruptcy looms near

I just wanted to interrupt this thread to mention General Booty. A legit name. Texas had Major. OU upped him with the General.
-
Shoot, now we gotta go find a kid named "President" or "Emperor" or something.
-
when is the last time neither was ranked?
-
One article I read said it was 1998. That was Mack Brown's first year at Texas, and I believe John Blake's last year at OU.
Texas won that game 34-3 and went on to a pretty nice year, finishing 9-3 and ranked #15.

I've never been to Norman, but I assume this is a picture of their downtown luxury high-rise condominiums:

geez, no wonder there's tornado damage in the Okie State

I wonder if Cousin Freddy will stop by? He used to, around TX-OU time...

Bevo scared UGA
And the Horns won
Maybe he can scare OU sooner than later
And repeat the result.

Pete was the QB during my years at Texas. We lost to a lot of teams during that era, but not OU.
-
better to be lucky than good
-
Gonna miss this game d/t "grownup stuff."
These are dark times.
-
Someone said about this game: a resistable force meets a movable object.
The FEI, S&P+ and F+ rankings still really like the Longhorns and Sooners right now. It's a top 10 matchup according to the F+
-
Well despite all of our problems this year, I do think Texas would be undefeated right now if Ewers hadn't been injured.
I'm not asserting Texas is top-10 worthy, just making a comment on our schedule so far to date.
-
Undefeated with a win over Bama would get you in the top ten every day.
-
Undefeated with a win over Bama would get you in the top ten every day.
Sure, but there are plenty of undeserving teams ranked in the top 10 every week, especially in the first half of the season.
I think Texas with a healthy QB#1 wins, instead of loses, two games that had a combined deficit of 4 points. But that doesn't change the fact that the defense is still very poor, and is downright awful in the second half, while the offensive play-calling also goes super-conservative in the second half and blows leads and endangers the team.
Texas could lose any remaining game on the schedule, due to the above flaws.
-
Deserves got nuthin to do with it.
-
That can certainly be your view, but that's the lens through which I'm looking when I speak, which is why I specifically and deliberately used the phrase "top-10 worthy."
-
Regardless, I'll be surprised, and delighted, if Texas manages to win this game. Goodness knows we could use some good fortune for a change.
-
I don't know who is top ten worthy, only who is top ten ranked. Texas would be as worthy in my view as anyone else in the top ten. But they aren't there.

Meh.
Texas sucks and kills conferences. OU stands for truth, justice, and the American Way.
The line is up to 7, based on the belief that Ewers will start and Gabriel won't, I suppose.
It could be close. Seemingly bad matchups in the RRS have been closer than anyone suspected, and even upsets.
Texas could win big. If it's close and low-scoring, OU might pull an upset.
EDIT: I'm 24 hours late on the line. Apparently it went up to 9.5 yesterday and is now back down to 7.5.
-
This seems fairly common in rivalry matchups, I think I'd take to dog in every one of them.

The biggest upset in the series is OU's OT win in 1996.
After that, the next 8 or 9-biggest upsets are all by Texas.
For the last 10 or so games, OU has typically been the favorite, and typically Texas has outperformed expectations.
It's a streaky series. Only one example of WLWLW (or LWLWL)--2012-2016.

why do Okies say y'all?
asking for a friend
I'll wait
-
Why doesn't Texas fall into the Gulf of Mexico?
Because Oklahoma sucks.
-
gotta like Venebles balls, but on the (3rd) 4th down try on the drive, his right guard acts like he's pass blocking on a run play that needs 2 yards
they just don't make O-linemen like they used too
-
Texas all over OU.
OU just looks disheveled.
-
I understand that the Horn's defense has a history of collapse in the 2nd half, but I don't think the Sooner's D will ever hold up
this game is over
-
Ok
-
Ask Sark if he can try for 77-0. Asking for a friend.
-
amazing what a difference having your 1st string QB makes
OU sure missed theirs

That's true, but the problems are much greater than just missing the starting QB.
Congrats to Texas. That was an ass-kicking that could have been even worse.

Thanks. We'll need it.

I am all astonishment.
Me too.
Texas played well overall, but it's clear this isn't the Sooners of old.
Best of luck the rest of the season C-Dubb.
