I hope CJH learned a lesson Saturday... you can never play not to lose else you're most likely going to.

Milking the clock on the last possession was a bad plan.  Play like you did all game... if they'd lost, that would be ALL on the coach.

Hooker carried that team almost exclusively.

The UF coach is a tool.  He won't be their long.

I was surprised to see the UF coach get so ... animated with the refs.  I know little about him, but that wasn't a good look IMHO.

I think the first thing he HAS to do is top ten recruiting.  If he can't and stays 15-20, they will continue to be an 8-4 or 9-3 kind of program and he won't last.  That of course is true for every upper level aspiring program in the SEC.  You might stumble into a one hit wonder and then fade, but as we see at LSU that doesn't last either.

I don't understand what you mean by that last sentence.  Please clarify.

I liked Napier at Lafayette and find myself hoping he does well in spite of him being the Florida coach.  I only got to check in occasionally on the UF/UT game so I missed whatever antics are being referred to.  I recorded it and hope to find time to watch in full.  We play both in the next few weeks and I like to know how bad we're going to lose.

so after a bit of settling down and better review of the game, my takeaways:

there was two major concerns which i've already spoke of- and that was CJH's playing not to lose by milking the clock and sitting on the ball the last possession.  That would have been catastrophic if UF could have came back.  This series is mired with weird endings- every time it's close UF gets some magic.. it's usually from the refs but this time it was witchcraft I'm pretty sure.  It almost worked.  Those cajun's know witchcraft far better than those swamp dwellers of Florida, so... "Play to Win and how you got there, Coach".

the second concern of value is that friggin' prevent- which is just another flavor of playing not to lose.  I get it--- "don't let them behind you" --- but, dude, the QB can be rattled with pursuit and if the play gets broken the likelihood of a completion downfield is single digit.... don't give them freakin yards!  this ties into a sub concern about the secondary and one player in particular- #12... UF was 'picking' on him no matter which position he aligned be it wide out or slot.  he's targeted as the weakest link, and though he has the physical abilities he obviously hasn't been baptized into the system yet...  er- uh- at least i hope it's not the system.  it's hard to tell, and, the gators may have just caught him in quicksand and were exploiting it... if that is the case the DC should have spotted it quicker than I did and rotated positions..

we may actually learn something about not only UT but the rest of the teams by the time UT lands in death valley.   the only thing to gather about UT will be via proxy, as some of their opponents will reveal where they are.  It's been said a team that can score 56+ is a good team... well... UT is good on O, then.. But the two teams with a pulse UT has played have both taken them to the wire.... the issue is, both of those teams have history with UT, and that cloud hampers visibility on actual stuff that matters.

Speaking of Death Valley, never let it be said that LSU fans can't be paranoid with the best of them.  But, hey, it's not paranoia when they're really out to get you.

"We" are none too happy about the game being put at 11:00.  That is a crime against humanity.  Only the 11th morning game ever played in Tiger Stadium, and at least one of those was moved due to an incoming hurricane where evacuation was recommended later that evening.  (App. St. in 2008, iirc, was played at like 9 in the morning so everybody could get home, pack up, and leave the area).

"We" are also noticing that Tennessee has the week off while we're playing a night game at Auburn, followed by a morning game vs. UT.  So UT gets a whole week off, we don't even get a full week between games.  Some of "us" think the tilt is in, the SEC wants an undefeated UT facing off against an undefeated Bama and are doing whatever little things they can think of to help it happen.

"I" generally don't ascribe to malice what can be explained with incompetence, and in that spirit, I doubt the conference is that clever, nor do I think they'd use whatever pull they have with the networks to make that happen, although I DO think the front office wants Bama/UT both undefeated and top 10.

It still doesn't matter to me.  Day games suck, they're not our tradition, and the SEC has gone to bat for every team in this league to help them with this's and that's, except us.  Not once have they lifted a finger in any request or difference of intent.

Tennessee is probably a significantly better team than us and god knows what kind of shape we'll be in after a trip to the Plains, but I am pretty sure of one thing:  the players, no matter where they're from, seem to imbibe and embody the culture of the program.  I think the whole thing, the players, coaches, admin, fans, all of it, are gonna be pissed and spitting venom when UT comes to town.  Good luck with that.  This isn't a vintage LSU squad but there's enough there to be dangerous if things break the right way.

Yeah, they really do take their night games that seriously.  We hate everything about CBS, their dumbazz 2:30 slot, and the fact that they keep using their night option at Alabama and not Baton Rouge.  Screw everything about it.  If Kelly is as good a coach as he's supposed to be, he'll find a way to convince the players that UT did this to them, and payback comes out of their backside.

These first 2 statements don't jive, and the below statement, I don't believe is true either.

they keep using their night option at Alabama and not Baton Rouge.

How much are start times determined by the networks?

I think near exclusively by draft.  And the network has locked in time slots.

You didn't really explain what doesn't "jive," but on all accounts, I don't know what else to tell you.  LSU fans do not like day games, it's certainly not their tradition, and the other statements are a matter of record.

How much are start times determined by the networks?

Nearly completely.  As utee94 has explained, the networks have tiered rights to air conference games.  In our case, CBS has the Tier 1 option--they get the first pick, and it's going to air at 2:30 and there's nothing that can be done about that once a game is selected.  They have one double header per year, meaning they air an evening game in addition to the afternoon slot.  ESPN has the Tier 2 rights, and may air morning, afternoon, or evening slots, and this includes their entire family of networks, including the SEC-N.  They've been pretty decent in the past to allow LSU games to be in their night slots, which makes it all the more bizarre they selected Tennessee/LSU to go in the morning slot.  UT is a top ten team and that often further merits at least afternoon slots, if not evening ones.  The Big Ten is an exception here, as they seem to play a lot of their games in the morning, no matter their ranking.  Michigan, for example, never played a night game before 2011.  They can be a hot team and play at 11 a.m. and they're happy with that.  Tier 3 rights have more or less gone away since the advent of the SEC network, BTN, etc.

The conferences have a likely very small amount of pull to use with the networks to have them pick games at times schools would prefer.  Nobody much cares for the most part, other than us, and as far as I know it's rare for the SEC to work with a network to make sure a game is at a certain time.

The noon start for us is more palatable than the 11 AM start in the CTZ.

We don't have time to get all the jambalaya, pots of etouffee, brisket and ribs, etc. ready for an 11:00 a.m. kickoff.  We don't even get up from the Friday night hangover til noon.

I almost got to go to a game at Neyland when I was a kid and my dad was living in Knoxville for a time.  Still haven't been.  LSU is a great tailgating scene and everybody should take in a game there at some point.  What you want to do is wander from tent to tent and tell the people there that you've never been to an LSU game and you've heard the food is better here than other places and you're not sure that you believe that, because the food is really good at the other places you've been.  They'll leap into action and stuff you full of the best they have to offer, trying to impress you with their culinary art.  If that doesn't do the trick for you, or you're just greedy and gluttonous, just move on to the next tent and repeat the process.

Oh, and there's a stadium there, where teams will be playing a football game, if that sort of things interests you.

We use to have some Cajuns contract in where I worked. Their cooking was excellent. A lot of nights all of us bought the supplies and let them do their thing.

You said this is only the 11th morning game in Tiger Stadium history, and then complained that the SEC goes to bat for everyone but you guys.

If someone wasn't going to bat for you, you'd have played a hell of a lot more 11 AM games than 11 in your history, like the rest of the SEC.

So yeah, that don't jive.

As for the rest, the part where CBS picks night games at Bama but not LSU, is the craziest bit of amnesia I can recall.  Looked it up to be factual......EVERY GAME in Baton Rouge against Bama has been a CBS night game in the last 12 years with the exception of 2010.

So yes, a matter of record indeed.

2010 - LSU 2:30 CBS
2011 - Bama 7 PM CBS
2012 - LSU 7 PM CBS
2013 - Bama 7 PM CBS
2014 - LSU 7 PM CBS
2015 - Bama 7 PM CBS
2016 - LSU 7 PM CBS
2017 - Bama 7 PM CBS
2018 - LSU 7 PM CBS
2019 - Bama 2:30 CBS
2020 - LSU 7 PM CBS
2021 -Bama ESPN 6 PM

I should clarify I'm not just talking about football time slots.  There is a ton in the basketball and baseball department that the SEC has really irritated us with over the years.  And I'm not just referring to the Alabama game in football.  CBS has caused us to play a lot more day games than we used to.  People like to say that's just what happens when you're a good team, CBS will pick you up more often.  To which the attitude is generally "Don't care.  Day games suck.  11 a.m. games are an abomination."  CBS holds most of the power in it's time slot, obviously, but there is wiggle room, and it's unknown if the conference requested accommodations if anything could be helped.  Nobody has ever cared to try, despite (supposedly) requests from the AD's office.

As far as football, CBS' schedule in 2011 must've scarred me, where we had 0 conference night games at home due to them.  The fans were royally pissed.  I didn't realize 12, 14, and 16 were on CBS.  I do remember them being played at night.

Where'd you get that info?  There's some other things I'd like to check but I don't know of a database that tracks networks and time slots for years gone by.

I had to look up box scores from ESPN.
