Title: Stream of Consciousness 2022-09-17
Post by: 847badgerfan on September 17, 2022, 08:13:12 AM
Good morning!!

A few nice games today leading up to the bloodbath in Columbus next weekend.

Lots of eyeballs will be looking to Lincoln, at least for a half or so. I'll be watching from a safe distance.

The cream of the crop is after dark. Looking forward to those games as two of the B1G powers travel to opposite sides of the country. MSU at Washington and PSU at Auburn.

My guys play Jerry's (Kill) kids.

Chicken Parm tonight. I'm meeting a friend for lunch so that's handled.

What's going on in your world?

I posted about this in another thread. I could not get the filet from the butcher - sold out. Possibly getting more today but I didn't want to chance it.

So, I'll make it next weekend.

Yep, I love pretty much all blue cheese varietals. One of the best ways to eat it (other than by itself) is to top a filet mignon, on top of a perfectly cooked beet.

I make a sauce with the cheese, cream, cracked pepper and finely grated garlic and shallots.

Plate the beet, top it with the meat, and then the sauce.

This might happen tomorrow. No. It WILL happen tomorrow.

Chicken Parm? What time should I be over?

I almost went to that Columbus game, but scheduling pushed back that trip to October. Not too busted up.

Started today with some light insomnia, but it got me moving in time for a slightly leisurely 6.5-mile run (my speed has been improving, which is welcome). The humidity dropped this week, which is good, but it's given me a sinus-related sour throat that I can't kick. Think I should make a grocery run before kickoff, but breakfast is the last of some leftover Indian food.

Probably gonna serve at the end of the 3:30's ??

Not sure. That would be a helluva drive at high speeds though.

Probably rain check that one too.

I'm gonna try to keep an eye on the Cal-ND game today. An ND win would be the first for the new coach (0-3).

Not sure Cal has the offense to score much on that ND defense, which looks really good. I think the key will be Cal's defense stuffing the ND offense, which is now on QB2.

Headed to the lake today, I'll be back in time for the UT game at 7 and the Ags-Miami game at 8.

We're going to eat at a restaurant on the water, pricey but good. Fusion of Tex-Mex and Hawaiian.

I don't recall a guard ever stepping on the tackle's foot next to him, causing an easy sack before.  Hmmph.

USCe can give UGA fits sometimes, but with 5 defensive starters out, I'm watching the old Big 8 matchup.  Nebraska's QB keeps getting sacked.  He should try something different.

Ya went there a few times used to go down the road to Riverside on the corner of Sprague & E.River Rd(252).Kind of flat no frills fairly long with plenty of rough. Shame they are both gone now but I haven't been swinginging the clubs for quite some time either.A contractor friend who'll I'll be seeing later built a beautiful home off of Snell think it sold for like 650,000 a year ago. That was 20 yrs back though then not long after he got divorced :o. He said he could build it but not afford to buy it. then 3-4 yrs ago he hit the ohio lottery for 350,000 - after taxes he got a little over 200,000. Unfortunately he had leukemia on/off but had been holding his own

Always be wary of judging how it'll go from the opening drive.  Those are the scripted plays they run over and over during the week.  Once they go off-script, they reveal themselves.

Scolding hot take here: Michigan would be a legit national title contender this year if David Ojabo & Dax Hill returned for 1 more year and Xavier Worthy was allowed to enroll early and never transferred to Texas.

Dax Hill would’ve just made their secondary that much better. They have nice depth guys at pass rush but no true stud- which is concerning- Ojabo would’ve given them that elite edge rusher.

Xavier Worthy with their other weapons on offense and JJ pulling the trigger- holy chit.

Seems like little things- but those are 3 ELITE guys- which added to this years team would just have made this team FILTHY.

Purdue has a defensive lineman named Nic Caraway? As is the Nick Carraway who spent a riotous summer on Long Island?

Never mind, but going into halftime @ Syracuse with the 9-3 lead, the coaching adjustments are really playing out between these two underrated teams. For as strong as Purdue's front seven is, Syracuse's is improved and playing well enough for coach Brohm to lean toward looking for offense through the air where the Boilermakers size is a big advantage. O'Connor is a big guy who early on found success finding big targets Durham and Johnson downfield, until Syracuse's secondary tightened up. Good home crowd in the dome.

Entertaining game at the garage dome in Syracuse.

After Purdue takes a 15-10 lead with an earlier fourth quarter TD drive (failed 2-pt), Syracuse dinks and dunks it to about midfield until Purdue forces a 4th down. On 4th and short Syracuse scores on a short reception and long run down the wide open sideline by WR Oronde Gadsen II (yes, son of the former Dolphins WR) for an 18-5 lead after Syracuse convert the 2-pt.

With the ball back deep on their side of the field, O'Connell, blown back by a blitz, flings an errant pass right into the hands of a Syracuse DL who trots untouched into the end zone.

Purdue with the ball, 7:00 left at their 45, down 25-15.

UCLA survives South Alabama 32-31 with a last second FG in front of dozens of home fans. I once again, dating back to UCLA's Karl Dorrell tenure, overrated the Bruins.

Speaking of Karl Dorrell, whoever (847b) said in the Minnesota-Colorado thread that the Buffaloes might not even score is on their way to being right; coming out of halftime the Gophers are up 35-0.

Meanwhile, the Cal-Notre Dame game in South Bend feels more like watching one of those pre-Christmas bowls with the Irish wearing alternate jerseys and the gameplay running at the lower gear of teams who aren't quite sure they'd rather be in their dorms. But the crowd, wow - an 0-2 Notre Dame is hosting a middling Pac 12 program and the stadium is completely packed (take notes UCLA!).

Notre Dame up 24-17 w/ 2:44 left in the game, playing with a lot of spirit but the Irish offense is so limited.

3:30 window has been GOOD.

Tulane getting super aggressive to secure the upset was great.

Cal didn't beat ND, but did enough to fill the Irish fans with all sorts of dread.

Wisconsin is murdering this terrible NMSU team. Nice to see the backups get some burn.

Me too.  Going on the road to face an SEC team is awesome.  MSU on the road tonight against a PAC team is good too, especially if they can win. When Minnesota scheduled Colorado- it was probably a decent matchup.  Same with OSU/ND.

Honestly I try to watch Michigan for a few minutes today as well as Wisconsin, but both were unlikable as it looked like they were playing high school teams.

well let’s be realistic- Loading up with cupcakes like Michigan did is actually a very smart play. It impresses the voters and the fans in the media, helps you in the rankings, helps insulate your stat sheet, gives you tons of experience for your less experience players, and keeps your best players from getting injured while giving them tuneups. There really is no downside.

Okay, Exhibit A on how to take a statistic and THINK you're using it, but it falling apart.

Miss State going for it on 4th and 1 repeatedly in the first half, including at their own 20.
The statistics say you should almost always go for it.  Great.  MSU seems to be employing this idea......and running the same play every time!
.
Here's a hint:  the math only works out IF YOU DON'T RUN THE SAME PLAY EVERY TIME

I didn’t realize how poor his pocket presence was until watching someone else against the same defense that had decent pocket presence. Sucks to see him get hurt, but also think he’s been lucky he stayed healthy this long.

Washington's Michael Penix stuffed on a 4th-and-goal QB sneak up the middle on Michigan State's 2. The play call is a complete misreading of Michigan State's defense and how, after playing unprepared for most of the 1st quarter, they were settling in and starting to frustrate the Huskies at the LOS.

As I type that Michigan State's RB stumbles on his own OL out of the backfield for a Safety. 9-0 Washington leads but Michigan State appears to be playing with regained focus, especially on defense.

edit: 22-0 Washington 2nd Q, an embarrassing showing for the Spartans

Arky reminds me a lot of those Wisconsin teams back in the day, just tough on the LOS, and well coached.  A&M may win, but I favor Arky fairly close, like 31-23.

hush or I'll send your post to your wife
Ha!  She's watched her team all season long, she knows what they look like this year.  Ain't nothin' I could criticize that she wouldn't agree with 100%, and with 10x more emotion.
