Title: #4 Michigan (2-0) vs. Hawaii (0-3) Post Game
Post by: Temp430 on September 12, 2022, 11:13:33 AM
Coach Harbaugh names J.J. McCarthy starting QB for the Connecticut game.  At the end of the day competition with McNamara wasn't even close.

anybody with a set of eye balls and watched them last year knew McCarthy was going to take over in 2022.

Harbaugh knew as well. He’s not stupid. Crazy weird af for sure. But not stupid. I suspect he did this whole dog and pony show to try and keep Cade from hitting the portal and that he’s trying everything he can behind the scenes to keep him for this year.

Cade = middling, average starter BUT as a backup option- he’d be maybe the best backup QB in the nation. That’s really what he is in my mind- a backup QB.

There's really no reason for him to enter the portal now right?  I assume he's already used his red-shirt year and could use the Covid year next year anyways for a new team.  So finish out the year as a backup and then enter the portal after the season.  Why quit on the team now, unless your feelings are hurt.

You'd think- but if he knows he's not starting anymore and his feelings are hurt maybe he wants to get a jump start on his new place. It's rare for guys to stick around these days in the era of the transfer portal.

I'd have already jumped if I was him

get moved into the new place, get to know the playbook, start practicing with the new program

his only hope at Michigan is there's a season ending injury

Get the graduate degree from Michigan this school year and then go somewhere else to get another one.

Cade should go to the Pac 10 or some other crappy conference where he's got a shot to look good.

Plus I don't think players should be allowed to transfer in-conference so easily like that. You want to transfer with the portal- knock yourself out- but if you want to transfer in-conference you should have to sit out a year.

He'd have a Ph.D. by the time he was done.

Dude, he could start at 3/4 of the Big Ten schools.

I disagree. I honestly don't think he's any good. He was just along for the ride last year. He kind of sucks actually.

Jake Butt breaking down film of JJ's first start. JJ has every tool in the arsenal you could possibly want in a QB. Elite arm talent in terms of velocity, accuracy, touch, and throwing off platform/on the move. Effortless motion, ball just explodes off his hand. He's a plus athlete for the position, sneaky fast. Dude has the chance to be pretty special provided Harbaugh doesn't ruin him.

Behind Stroud and O'Connell for sure.  Toss up with Thorne, Clifford, Tagovailoa, and MAYBE Morgan.  For sure over everyone else

I'd take Thorne, Clifford, Tua Jr, and Morgan over Cade without even having to think twice about it. As for the rest- well that says more about the rest of the leagues dire QB situations than it says about Cade being great or anything.

This year's Mertz (so far) is better than McNamara.

Mertz and McNamara about on par imo. Both kinda suck. Neither are terrible. Neither are that good. Mertz has way more physical talent and raw ability- but he also does a lot more stupid sh*t and probably isn't as accurate. BUT to be fair- Cade doesn't really take many chances- he's captain check down- and he doesn't attempt as many down the field throws- which probably skews what seems like his accuracy a bit. It's easy to be accurate on throws that travel less than 10 yards in the air- Cade is accurate on those- further 20+ in the air? Cade struggles- wet noodle arm for ya and all.
