Title: 2022 Volleyball Thread
Post by: MarqHusker on August 18, 2022, 01:05:56 AM
Might as well put this here. AVCA's preseason T25.  Notorious for backward looking and often ridiculed by geeks like me.    Two things stand out to me, who's putting UT outside of #3 on their ballot?  San Diego 25th is quite off.

MSU appears to be playing a VERY weak OOC slate this year, their first under the new coach.  So they could (should?) roll into conference play at like 10-1/9-2, and it won't mean much

Horns open Fri/Sat with a double-header against the Buckeyes in Columbus, and then a few days later face the Gophs at home.  Should be fun.  I love how in volleyball, the top teams are willing to schedule early OOC matches against one another.

Nebraska's match on Thursday, Sept. 1 against Loyola Marymount has moved up one hour to a 6 p.m. start time and will now be televised statewide by Nebraska Public Media.

The match was originally scheduled for a 7 p.m. start with no television broadcast. It will still be streamed on B1G+ (BTNPlus.com) and will be carried on the Huskers Radio Network affiliates, Huskers.com and the Huskers app.

The Huskers now have 19 televised matches this season with Nebraska Public Media able to carry five matches in addition to 12 on Big Ten Network, one on ESPNU and one on FS1.

Not picking on Texas but the portal is so evident in Volleyball at P5 level.   Five big ones for the Horns to compliment Eggleston, O'Neal and co.   I saw a list of P5 transfers and it is ginormous

Dropped the first set in the second match.  Sets in the first match were pretty hotly contested as well.  Won't be at all surprised to see these two face off again in the playoff.

Horns continue their B1G tour when Minnesota comes to Austin in a few days, should be some more close sets,

The NCAA volleyball season got underway Friday, and, as you would have expected, there were some surprises.

That did not include the top five teams in the AVCA preseason poll, as No. 1 Nebraska swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Tulsa; No. 2 Texas swept at No. 7 Ohio State as Logan Eggleston had 15 kills and the Longhorns hit .348; No. 3 Wisconsin swept at TCU; No 4 Louisville swept Northern Kentucky and South Dakota at South Dakota; and No. 5 Minnesota beat No. 16 Baylor in four.

But then things got unpredictable.

No. 6 Pittsburgh, playing at Texas A&M, lost in five to No. 25 San Diego. Also at A&M, the Aggies beat Hawai’i in five.

No. 8 Washington lost in four at unranked Arkansas.

No. 11 Kentucky was knocked off by Marquette, losing in five to the visiting Golden Eagles despite 28 kills from Adanna Rollins. Rollins started her career at Minnesota, went to Penn State, and is finishing at Kentucky.

No. 12 UCLA was stunned at Utah State, losing in four as the Bruins hit .076. Utah State, which also beat Cal Poly, defeated a ranked team for the first time in 12 years.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky vs. Wisconsin volleyball match on Friday, September 9 has been moved up an hour to a 6 p.m. ET start and will now be televised live on ESPNU, the Southeastern Conference announced Monday.

No changes need to be made to any previously-purchased tickets, as only the time is affected.

The match features the last two NCAA National Champions with Kentucky taking the title in 2020 followed by the Badgers in 2021. Kentucky played in Madison last year, dropping a tight 3-1 match to the Badgers.

Campbell vs. Indiana State, which was scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. ET start in the afternoon match has been moved up 90 minutes to a 3 p.m. ET start to accommodate the television broadcast.

Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook continues to utilize the nonconference slate to experiment.

Last season, that meant several losses but ultimately resulted in a national title match appearance. Now through four matches, NU has yet to use the exact same lineup and on Thursday even debuted a new offense.

Nebraska fans have become accustomed to the Huskers running a 5-1, meaning there is just the one setter playing all the way through the rotation. Against Loyola Marymount, Cook unveiled a 6-2.

Cook said his team started working on the new system Monday and started to really like it Tuesday. With a 6-2, you need to have a pair of setters to constantly rotate in. The setters only play in the back row. Once one is set to rotate into the front, a right side subs in with the other setter filling into the back row for the next three rotations.

The two setters getting the nod were Nicklin Hames and Anni Evans. Cook said after the match that he isn't done with the 5-1 or using Kennedi Orr.

As for a big advantage, the 6-2 results in keeping bigger players in the front row. That meant multiple triple blocks for Big Red, with all three players 6'4" or taller.

The No. 2 Huskers stayed perfect at 4-0 on the season by sweeping the Lions 25-17, 16, 17.

It would seem the 6-2 worked for the hitters with six getting at least nine swings.

LINCOLN, Neb. —
Creighton University expects to set a record with the Bluejays host the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a much-anticipated volleyball showdown Wednesday at CHI Health Center Arena.

Creighton, ranked 17th in the nation faces No. 2. Nebraska at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 7th.

As of Monday, more than 14,000 tickets were already out according to Creighton University. So the match likely will set a record for the largest regular-season volleyball-only crowd in NCAA history.

"For the state, this is a celebration of two nationally-ranked volleyball programs," said Nebraska head coach John Cook. "Volleyball is a state treasure here and it's a great example for all the young kids playing, all the high school teams playing, just to see how important volleyball is here."

Creighton enters the match with a record of 5-1. The Huskers are undefeated and has failed to lose a set so far this season.

CHI Health Center Omaha played host to history and a fantastic volleyball match on Wednesday night as 15,797 fans in both red and blue watched No. 2 Nebraska outlast No. 17 Creighton in five sets.

The attendance figure shattered the previous NCAA record for a regular-season volleyball-only match of 14,022 set between the same two teams in the same building back in 2018. That match also went five sets.

The Cornhuskers (6-0) took down the Bluejays (5-2) 25-18, 25-23, 25-27, 17-25, 15-9 to improve to 21-0 in the in-state rivalry.

Running a 6-2 for the third straight match, Nebraska out-hit Creighton .244 to .202 behind a monster match from sophomore opposite hitter Whitney Lauenstein. She finished with a career-high 25 kills on .385 hitting.

fun match.  Lauenstein seems to have emerged out of the 3 sophomores, though Krause no slouch.   Batenhorst has some ab injury.   Still weird watching the 6-2 offense.  I get it, but with any offense, lots of tradeoffs running it.    Think its been 20 years since a team won the title running primarily a 6-2 offense.

snooty vball guy note:  a six-two is an offense where the setter is always in the back row of the rotation (meaning they cannot attack or dump) and you will always have three hitting options in the front, with two OH and your middle, meaning you're going to play two different setters during the match.  Setter A plays three rotations, subs out for a new OH in the front, and the OH on front right, subs out for Setter B.  You do this when you (seem) to have at least 4 'pin' outside hitters.....or you're not totally sold on your setter.   In this instance, Nebraska has 4+ OHs.    We'll see how it goes.    Cook loves to tinker in Aug/Sept.

Setters too.  Can be tough on hitters w two different setters.   Also noteworthy,  Nebraska really has 3 setters here, and they are all struggling to sync up with Hord in the middle to date.  Still, offensively, Nebraska is light years ahead of last seasons offensive play, which was statistically their worst in 35 years.

I went to the final match in St Johns and they had to stop the game for about five minutes when a bat got loose. So Geoff Carlston is chasing this thing around with a towel the entire time, while male cheerleaders are trying to trap it in their megaphones unsuccessfully. Meanwhile the players are practically standing on their chairs, and there's girls screaming bloody murder all over the arena every time the bat flies by. Finally a student manager snatched it out of the air on a slide out of a dead sprint, to a thunderous applause.

Great historical venue, but it was time to shut her down.

I heard two things from folks at the match.
1. Players, fans said it was freezing.
2.  Absolutely no home court advantage.

4100 in attendance, I know this is a popular road trip for Nebraska fans. @MSU, @UM.  If I wasn't coaching our final weekend I would have gone up with my girls.

Nebraska setting looked mostly crisp for first time in awhile.

This might be an all time low for BIG setters. After about a zillion years of between 1-5 elite setters in the league.  It would surprise me if any BIG Setter made an AA team this season.  NW setter might be best I've watched to date.

Nebraska volleyball is back at No. 1.

The latest AVCA Coaches Poll saw the Huskers receive 48 first-place votes to retake the top spot. NU was last No. 1 in the preseason poll before being overtaken by Texas and Louisville.

But both the Longhorns and Cardinals were tripped up last week. Meanwhile, Nebraska has won 11 straight, sweeping the last six opponents.

Nebraska's next opponent, Wisconsin, is ranked No. 5.

The Nebraska volleyball program announced its top-ranked recruiting class according to PrepVolleyball.com on National Letter of Intent Signing Day on Wednesday.

Head Coach John Cook and the Huskers secured the signings of five prospects, all ranked in the top 13 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com. The 2023 signing class includes outside hitter Harper Murray (No. 2 overall), setter Bergen Reilly (No. 4 overall), libero Laney Choboy (No. 5 overall), opposite hitter Caroline Jurevicius (No. 7 overall) and middle blocker Andi Jackson (No. 13 overall).

Led by assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Jaylen Reyes, the Huskers have now signed the No. 1 class twice in the last three years, and they had the second-ranked class last year.

"The class of 2023 is a special class," Cook said. "We fill our needs at every position, and they all have very high-level international experience representing the USA. The bonds they formed on those teams have run deep and they all plan to start school in January. All five of them are also exceptional students. We have been inspired being around them as they have big goals and they 'Dream Big'. This group of athletes are super competitive, fun to watch, and they will raise the level of our gym. I want to thank Kelly Hunter and Jaylen Reyes for their hard work on this class, along with all the people at Nebraska who work with our program. This is why we say, 'There is No Place Like Nebraska.'"

All five signees will enroll at Nebraska in January, and all five have been chosen to play in the 2022 Under Armour All-America Game. The signing class already has experience playing with each other and with current Huskers. Choboy, Jackson, Murray and Reilly all played on the U.S. Girls U19 Team that won gold at the Pan American Cup this summer in Tulsa, Okla. Reilly was the tournament MVP and Best Setter, while Murray was the Best Spiker and Choboy was the Best Receiver. Nebraska freshman Maggie Mendelson was also on the team, giving the Huskers five of the 13 roster spots.

Following a disappointing loss at Ohio State, Nebraska didn’t suffer a hangover on Friday night.

Nebraska (23-3, 15-2) took care of business on the road with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-14 sweep over the Hawkeyes in front of a crowd of 3,987 fans at the Xtream Arena.

While Nebraska was cruising to another sweep, they received good news from the other side of the conference as Maryland upset No. 5 Ohio State in four sets. The Terrapins recorded 16 blocks and limited OSU to hitting .153. National player of the week Emily Londot finished with 10 kills and 15 errors for the Buckeyes.

The loss by the Buckeyes drops them into a second-place tie with NU, a game behind Wisconsin. The Huskers control their destiny in the Big Ten title race with home matches against No. 19 Purdue, No. 3 Wisconsin and No. 9 Minnesota remaining.

The road ahead won’t be easy, and Cook said Ohio State’s loss shows that there are no off nights in the Big Ten.

looks like San Diego got short straw on the top 4 seeds.   I'm not surprised, they had a pretty good case.

B1G with only six bids (UW/N/Minn/tOSU/PSU/Purdue).   Every time it looked like IU, Maryland, or NW looked tourney worthy, they fell short.   Wonder what will happen with Michigan's Rosen (who took a med leave late).    Nebraska leaking oil lineup issues with Knuckles finished w ACL, setter injuries/inconsistency and then Whitney going out with an illness past week.

Hard to pick against UT but that's why they play.

super chalky sweet 16 next week, only one '4' seed got beat (that being Creighton which sadly couldn't overcome the loss of its setter, lost to Auburn in 5, then UH took down Auburn).   Luvl took out Purdue today.  I'm not certain of this, but UH might the only team never to reach the sweet sixteen before, don't think they have.      Of trivial note, Nebraska extended its unbeaten streak vs KU to 88 by sweeping Kansas in the second round.   Chalk almost never holds through 2nd weekend, I'd bet UT, Stanford (would love to see SD pull it out),  UF, and Louisville.

Austin
Texas v Marquette
tOSU v Minnesota

Palo Alto
San Diego v Kentucky
Houston v Stanford

Madison
Wisconsin v Penn St
Florida v Pitt

Louisville
Nebraska v Oregon
Louisville v Baylor

Badgers volleyball survived another tough one with PSU. Second straight time those two have gone to five sets. This team is gutsy--they've shown they can play through adversity. Good thing; it ain't getting any easier...

This tournament has been so, so good so far (unless you're a fan of a team that's knocked out, I guess). These last few rounds should be stellar.

Other than the Badgers, really curious to see how San Diego fares against Stanford. Impressive win over Kentucky, but now they get the big kids.

Also really interested to see Texas tilt with Ohio State. The Big Ten has looked really good in this tournament and Ohio State is rolling. But...Texas.

Some A+ matches today, topped off by San Diego reaching its first ever FF, upsetting Stanford 15-9 in the 5th set.    I think SD deserved that 1 seed.  Either way they move on to Omaha, along with Texas, Louisville and Pittsburgh.

Acc guaranteed to make the Finals for first time ever.  I hate to admit this but I think Big Ten was not as fabulous as people think this season.

Louisville grinded out a 5 set win at home vs Oregon.
Ducks with high entertainment this weekend.

Texas handled Ohio St in 4 sets.   I still think UT is team to beat.
Pittsburgh wins at Wisconsin.  Btw,  UW needs to do something with the lighting at the Field House.   Looks like a dungeon on TV.

I'll pull for Louisville and or San Diego.

Tom Shatel asked John Cook how he felt about two of his former Huskers — Kayla Caffey and Keonilei Akana — making the Final Four with Texas. He didn’t want to talk about it.

“(Terry) Pettit said I should wear my USD shirt because I went to school there,” Cook said of San Diego, Texas’ semi final opponent.

There is legit discussion around Pittsburgh about the volleyball team.  It's a pro sports town, and aside from when Pitt was a consistent basketball contender for like a decade, they only pay attention to any Pitt sports (including football) when they are a national story.  I think this would parallel any Pitt football or basketball coverage in the past decade.
Title: Re: 2022 Volleyball Thread

After a error prone first set,  Texas simply had too many options AND something we simply haven't seen from UT in high leverage matches,  competent  high quality serve receive.   Fleck and Halter did a great job stepping in to take serves pretty much all night.  Philips and Skinner were dominant against SD block.   Eggleston was a no show for the first half of the match, but Texas with too much offense (and block). SD very formidable but not so good in transition.

Pitt v UL was pretty entertaining, even with a train wreck 5th set for Pitt.   Don't see 15-2 much anymore, not in rally scoring.   I remember N beat Wisconsin 15-1 in a final back in side out scoring, but not in rally.   UL blocked everything in sight.  Chaussee and the serving by Louisville was superb.

Yeah that first set was pretty sloppy, but SR cleaned up a lot in this match compared to most of the rest of the season (and most past seasons).

Every team at this level can win, this final match should be fun to watch.

It's good stuff.  When im coaching the little ones that's the #1 thing, keep cool and never react.  It's often kids first taste of really competing.  The body language is such a tell.  Points come fast and they have to learn to immediately move on to the next no matter the highs and lows.  Let the parents lose their minds in the bleachers.   I also (try) to have the kids ignore the fans and specifically their parents.   So hard, they want approval and or that crutch.  Sometimes I wish they were banned from watching.  They are nervous wrecks.

Texas really looked unstoppable tonight.  Louisville just outmatched.  Looked like we might see a 4th set there, UT transition and block were terrific.    If you've watched UT over the years we all know what the difference makers were....the three little ladies in the back row, primarily Fleck and Halter.   Eggleston undisputed best player in country

Louisville a very worthy #2.   I felt only they or Stanford could take down UT in this field.

Transfer portal huge part of the WVB game.  Skinner now has two Championships w two teams at two positions.    The whole FF had at least 15 portal transfer players.

The Transfer Portal gets credit for that title.

They had like 6 or 7 of them.

Last season, Wisconsin one-upped Nebraska and Creighton by hosting Florida at the Kohl Center to break the NCAA’s regular season single-match attendance record at 16,833.

Nebraska saw Wisconsin’s raise and is countering by going all-in: the Huskers will host Omaha for a match at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, August. 30, with a 7 p.m. CT scheduled start time.

Division II in-state schools Nebraska-Kearney and Wayne State will play opening act with an exhibition game at 4:30 p.m., and a concert featuring a performance artist to be named later will follow the Huskers and Mavericks in what the athletic department is calling “Volleyball Day in Nebraska.”

“This is going to be a special day for the sport of volleyball in this state,” Nebraska head coach John Cook said in a release. “At Nebraska we’re always aiming to ‘Dream Big’ and raise the bar, and there can’t be a much bigger way to do that than to play a match outdoors in a 90,000-seat football stadium. We’re excited that we’re going to be able to include three other local schools as well to make it a statewide celebration. A Nebraska volleyball ticket is one of the hardest tickets in town to get, so we’re pumped that this match will give so many more fans an opportunity to come watch us play and be part of a historic day.”

Nebraska and Creighton set a new regular season attendance record at CHI Health Center Omaha early last season before the Badgers and Gators broke it less than two weeks later. Now, Nebraska is planning to raise the bar even further. Nebraska and Wisconsin currently share the all-time attendance record with 18,755 fans at the Final Four in Columbus, Ohio, in 2021.

The Big Ten Network will televise the Nebraska-Omaha match. Tickets — good for both matches plus the concert — will go on sale to Nebraska volleyball season-ticket holders on Tuesday, April 25, and will cost $25 for adults and $5 for children. They will be separate from season-ticket packages. Tickets for the general public will go on sale on April 26.

“This is going to be a fantastic celebration of volleyball in the state of Nebraska,” Nebraska Vice Chancellor, Director of Athletics Trev Alberts said in the release. “Our Husker program has long been a source of pride throughout the state, and we are also proud that the success of Nebraska volleyball has played a large role in the exponential growth of the sport in Nebraska. We know our great fan base will embrace Volleyball Day in Nebraska and turn out in full force for this historic event. Go Big Red!”

Nebraska went 26-6 last season and fell in the Regional Semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament. Omaha went 20-11 last season including 14-4 in Summit League play under Coach Matt Buttermore, who has led the Mavericks to back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since making the transition to Division I in 2011.

UNK finished the 2022 season at 28-6 and ranked 15th in the final AVCA Division II Coaches Poll. The Lopers have made 23 straight NCAA Tournaments with national runner-up finishes in 2005 and 2019. Wayne State went 30-3 last season including the program’s first conference title in the NSIC. The Wildcats finished fourth in the final coaches poll.

The Memorial Stadium match will take place during the second week of the season; the Huskers will open play with a home tournament at the Devaney Center Aug. 25-27.

LINCOLN, Neb. (NU Athletic Communications) - The Volleyball Day in Nebraska outdoor event in Memorial Stadium sold out on Thursday morning, the third day tickets were on sale to the public.

Approximately 82,900 tickets were claimed between the season-ticket holder on-sale on Tuesday and the general public on-sale on Wednesday and Thursday. Approximately 17,900 of the tickets were claimed in the season-ticket holder on-sale on Tuesday and the rest on Wednesday and Thursday. That number does not include field-level seating or indoor club seating.

Nebraska will host Omaha at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30 in a regular-season match in Memorial Stadium. As part of a local doubleheader celebrating the impact of volleyball on the state, Nebraska-Kearney will play Wayne State in an exhibition match at 4:30 p.m.

”Nebraska fans never cease to amaze me,” Nebraska Vice Chancellor, Director of Athletics Trev Alberts said. “We knew the interest in this match would be extremely high, but to sell out Memorial Stadium is truly remarkable. I’ve heard lots of talk about breaking the NCAA volleyball attendance record, but given the incredible demand for this event we want to explore every avenue to see if it’s possible to challenge the record for the most attended women’s sporting event in this country. We are truly grateful!”

”There is No Place Like Nebraska. What more can you say?” Nebraska Head Coach John Cook said. “We knew there was a lot of interest in this event based on the reaction we’ve had the last couple of months traveling around the state and the country. But to sell out more than 80,000 tickets already? It’s unreal. Our team was already pumped up about Volleyball Day in Nebraska, but now I can’t even imagine how excited they are going to be for this. It’s epic.”

The record crowd for any NCAA volleyball match is 18,755 when Nebraska played Wisconsin on Dec. 18, 2021, in the NCAA Championship at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The largest NCAA volleyball regular-season crowd is 16,833 when Wisconsin hosted Florida at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis., on Sept. 16, 2022.

The largest crowd to attend a women’s sporting event in the USA was 90,185 for the 1999 Women’s World Cup Final between USA and China at Rose Bowl Stadium. That remained as a world record until 91,553 surpassed it when Barcelona played Real Madrid in Spain in a UEFA Women’s Champions League match on March 30, 2022.

Based on years living in Lincoln, during August.
50% chance hot humid and windy.
15% severe weather particularly that 4-6 pm window.

Should be quite the spectacle.  I'd expect higher ace % anticipating wind wreaking havoc with serve receive on floats

The Nebraska Volleyball team locked down the future of its setter position with a commitment from one of the top-ranked 2025 prospects in Campbell Flynn.

Attending Mercy High School in the suburbs of Detroit, Flynn is the top-rated setter in the 2025 class and is the third straight No. 1 setter to commit to Nebraska, joining Kennedi Orr and Bergen Reilly who are currently on the Nebraska roster. Flynn is set to replace Orr after she graduates following the 2024 season while Reilly will be a junior entering 2025. According to PrepDig, Flynn is the No. 5-ranked overall prospect.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The University of Nebraska-Lincoln announced that it will not have in-person classes on Nebraska Volleyball Day.

In an email sent to students on Wednesday, Chancellor Rodney Bennett said he’s declaring Aug. 30 an “instructional continuity day.”

This means the academic spaces on all campuses will be closed to all activities not connected directly to the events at Memorial Stadium.

UNL officials ask students to check with their professors on if they’ll be holding remote classes that day.

“This will be a historic day for UNL,” Bennett wrote in the email. “It is an incredible opportunity to celebrate Nebraska’s rich volleyball tradition and to show the world how Husker Nation stands up in support of our student-athletes.”

Bennett also said most buildings will be available via NCard only on that day, though libraries will remain open.

Employees who already have a parking permit and will be working on campus that day need to reserve a spot online at no cost. Additional spaces will be available for anyone attending the event. Those will cost $10.

The festivities get underway at 4:30 p.m., when UNK takes on Wayne State. That match will be followed by Nebraska and UNO at 7 p.m.

Both matches will be played at Memorial Stadium.

Scotty McCreery is set to perform to cap the night.
