Both Nebraska and UW have some potentially serious injury issues on their hands to open the season.
Nebraska's setter and returning AA Kelly Hunter may not start the season this weekend (matches at Florida and vs Oregon).
UW's returning AA Molly Haggerty had back surgery over the summer and her status remains closely guarded to start the year. Some pretty broad speculation about this as usual on the webs. UW hosting the B1G v ACC challenge this weekend.
No worries.
You guys have the greatest setter to ever play the game, just waiting in the wings.Quote

MSU had a tourney in Florida, but will now only play one game and then return home. Now the standalone matchup with #2 Florida has also been rightfully cancelled.

I think the best rule change ever was awarding a point for a side out.Rally scoring was the best change to the game by a mile. Full credit goes to former Michigan State (and USC) HC Chuck Erbe. He lobbied for that (among other things, he was an eccentric guy) forever. The side out, play to 15 was indeed brutal. I can think of a couple of matches I attended in the mid 90s that were absolutely 3 hours plus. Even 3 set lopsided matches could drag. It was also ruinous for TV scheduling purposes.
When I was at OSU, a team had to be serving in order to score a point, and the games would just go on forever.
At multiple points in a set there would be like 5 side outs in a row; some with really long volleys.
It seemed like ten minutes would go by without either team being awarded a single point.
Good for stats, I suppose. But bad for just about everything else.
it's only the 15th of SeptemberYou're right.
You're right. All seasonal brews are Just in Time inventory. If you don't have it to the distributor by August, you run the risk of not getting it on the truck at all. That's why its a seasonal, not an actual October beer. You wait til October and as noted Utee has moved on to buying sixers (or more) of Winter Ales, as the existing inventory of Octoberfest brews sits in the discount rack getting old.
Shoulda started drinkin' Oktoberfest back in August. I'll try harder.
Y'all do know that Okotberfest starts in Munich tomorrow, right? The bulk of the festival occurs during September every year.well, I guess I won't move to Austin afterall
That said, no, I can't bring myself to go that dark and malty in Texas in August, even though that's when the Oktoberfest/Marzen beers first start showing up. I typically stick to the pilsners, hefes, witbiers, helles, and other lighter, brighter summer styles, until the thermometer dips below 90...

My friend who owns the Live Oak Brewery tells me that he can't sell the Oktoberfest after Halloween. People just don't buy it.
Middle blockers Briana Holman and Lauren Stivrins each recorded 10 kills and hit .500 to pace No. 10 Nebraska to a 25-22, 25-11, 25-16 sweep of Kansas State on Friday afternoon at the Omaha Challenge at Baxter Arena.Revenge!!! KSU beat Nebraska in the 2nd round of the tournament about five years ago, the only time Nebraska missed the regionals in decades.
Watching OSU take on Dayton in the Capital Centre tomorrow is going to be hilarious.A straight set victory over Dayton, in operation PacTheCap.
They probably could've found a local HS with a bigger gym.

Indeed they did. USC has had a up and down start, but that's a nice win, even if it was a home match. She wasn't interested? I don't think she plays competitively anymore.
Of a trivial matter. Long Beach St. is 1-9 and UCSB is 0-9 to start the season. Man, how two programs (LBSU has 3 NC's, and was the first ever to go undefeated) have turned to total dog crap. Since Misty May left LBSU it has been a steady decline. They tried to hire her to coach this season, after their long time HC finally retired.
Sparty won in 5 sets at Madison tonight. Minn the last undefeated B1G team. Gophers beat mich in 4 sets.MSU gets #1 Minnesota on Sunday, televised on ESPN. Could make for quite a weekend.
if two women's volleyball teams from the state of Nebraska can be in the top 10, then it stands to reason that UNL should be able to have one football team in the top 10ouch
I know we talked about this in some thread on the old board, but offspring of pro athletes rears its heads in vball too. Bob Lanier has a daughter playing USC vball. She's very pretty, and yes, like her old man, has huge feet. I see Jud Buechler's daughter is playing for UCLA (vb).Torri Dixon, daughter of Vikings all-everything OL David Dixon, was a unanimous All-American for the Gophers.

Does Rutgers do ANYTHING well in this conference? You mean other than ignite the passions of NYC residents?
Does Rutgers do ANYTHING well in this conference?Ha, I had to check.
That's pretty sad.I had to go look this up. Appears they have beaten a few opponents this year out of conference?
The worst NCAA VB team that I have ever seen at any level has got to be Wilmington.
They joined the OAC in 2001, and have only won one OAC match ever since. And that was clear back in 2008.
The gap between Wilmington and the second worst OAC team in any given year is so vast, that it tends to be a bench-clearing straight sets beat down.
Even when they have a decent player or two on their roster, it's not enough to overcome the sheer ineptitude that permeates every other aspect of their VB program.
They schedule down in the non-conference portion of the schedule with a bunch of two-year JuCos and Regional campuses that aren't even good by 2-year community college standards, and they still drop the lion's share of those games.
They suck at Football too, so I'm not sure why there were ever even added. It certainly wasn't for their TV market.
I had to go look this up. Appears they have beaten a few opponents this year out of conference?Ha, yeah. They are 1-1 against UC Clearmont, which is a 2-year branch campus of Cincinnati; a step below JuCo.
Wilmington? They lost to Earlham for God's sakes, in a Quaker battle. (My in-laws alma mater). I just peeked at their team website. One of the pics is of an attempted block, and one of the MBs barely has her hands over the net. That's not a good sign.Yeah, the talent gap between D1 and D3 is actually pretty amazing.
Re: Rutgers, the only P5 program that might be as poor at vball right now as Rutgers would be Clemson. UVA is also in a very low spot lately. Collectively the three of those are likely RPI 200+ easily. As a general matter, and this really isn't news. The eastern part of the U.S. (I don't include Ohio or Michigan in the 'east') is very weak at volleyball. The only schools to make a FF would be Penn St., Florida and FSU (once).
I'm sure there's a big gap between I and III. I would posit that there's still a pretty big gap between high I-A and lower I-A. If you went back twenty years ago, it would be a rare season to not see the entire Top 10 in the AVCA in the Sweet 16 of the Tournament, and likely all 8 of the Elite 8. It was such a top heavy game, but at least it has smoothed out a bit, where there are absolutely a lot more than 30 competitive programs and the tournament isn't always 'chalk.'The 1A and III gap is large in any sport. Perhaps the only one that intermingles talent to some extent is baseball. I played D3 baseball and played in a summer league with D1 players. I also know a few D3 guys who got drafted.

No, Texas beat Nebraska last year at the FF, not this year. Meanwhile Texas just managed to rally down 2-0 at last place K-State to win in 5 (15-11). The XII is really bad. UT needs a setter, what else is new.glad to know the Huskers are better than the Horns at something.......

--------------------------------It turns out that Otterbein is the host site for that entire portion of the bracket.
If they win one this year, they will likely face Ohio Northern for the third time in the next round. They beat ONU in 5 on the road during the Regular Season, the two teams shared the Regular Season OAC Title, and Otterbein beat them in straight sets in the Final game of the OAC Tourney.
The winner of that game would likely have to face Wittenberg, the best team in the State and one of the top teams in the Nation.

Hunter Atherton and the Huskers host Maryland on Wednesday at 6 p.m. on BTN
The vball coach at tOSU is a senior auditor at an Accounting Firm?Hey now.
the Fighting Frankie's from Ohio looked very strong tonightDamn impressive for a volleyball game.

There is no 'tiebreaker' in VB, so even though N won at Penn State, a shared 19-1 record, would mean a shared title.well, that's BS
I seem to recall a Big Ten Tourney as well, but in googling around and perusing the record book, I can't seem to find any evidence to support that recollection. If they had one, it hasn't been for a very long time. Some smaller ones have them, others do not. It seems to be a pure function of the scheduling, and # of teams/matches. The sport is very cost conscious, so that's the chief reason it was always voted down in a lot of leagues. Plus, who is hosting it, who gets those rights, how many teams. Do they reduce the conf schedule?
It looks like it was initially a single round robin. Then a double round robin (H & A) that went from full to partial as the Conference expanded.
Now that they are up to 14 teams, might as well go back to a single round robin, with a Conference Tourney.
Maybe play a second game against a fixed rival or three for 14 or 16 total Conference games before the Tourney.

Do they reduce the conf schedule?Yeah, I could have sworn they had one until like 5-6 years ago, but I looked back, and at least going back to 2001-02 they didn't.
The 20 match schedule of course is still unbalanced, many of the same challenges as the hoops league.
Yeah, Varsity Big Ten VB officially became a thing in 1981.The tradition that Cook continues to build began in 1978,
Probably existed solely as a club sport before that.
Yeah, the whole Junior class has suffered season ending injuries, including the starting setter.
Iowa knocks off Ohio State. Buckeyes decimated by injuries this year, though I'm sure they'll find a way to beat Nebraska somehow again this Friday, Nebraska can't beat tOSU lately (1-3).
Hunter Atherton just served for the win in a very competitive 1st setTraitor!
Huskers 25 Buckettes 23
GO BIG RED!
Ray Ray's Hog Pit any good?Indeed it is.

On Friday night on Pac 12 you can catch Purdue v Utah (watch Cutting jump over everybody for Purdue)Damn TV networks putting on the sports that get better ratings.
BTN I'm sure is showing hoops.
I doubt volleyball gets many eyeballs at all. I suspect they only get 1/2 million viewers for the FF. I just like poking fun at BTN Olympic sports coverage vs Pac 12 network. Pac 12 network may have its problems, but covering volleyball isn't one of them. The only thing that legitimately irks me is the love for women's hoops (and softball) vs other events that I would rather watch. Me first type complaining to be sure.I've never taken the time to dig into it, but I've noticed that MSU women's basketball coverage on BTN always seems to line up with men's. That I wonder if they schedule their men's games, and then if that school has a women's game the day before or the day after, BTN picks it up. That it's out of convenience more than anything.
To their credit they have indeed made (nearly all) vball matches available on BTN+ and their streaming is fair to above average, even though I'm not all that excited about watching streaming video on a device. This is where I would love Nebraska public television. They have such great production for volleyball matches.I get to see all of the UT volleyball games, and well produced, too. You should get your own school network, I highly recommend it! :)
it wouldn't surprise me to see, NET, a network for a state of less than 2 million get better ratings tonight for volleyball than the LHNlulz
just one reason Nebraska volleyball turns a profit
Round two results and moving on to the Sweet Sixteen. 6 B1G teams to the SW16. Pac with 5. SEC 3.Sure would have preferred to stay at home this round rather than be on the road in Palo Alto, but I think Texas can win through here. Won't be easy that's for sure.
Michigan State wins in Omaha vs #9 Creighton in four sets. Pretty convincing win.
They will play Illinois which upset #8 U-Dub in five sets in Seatlle
#1 Penn State dropped another set, but beats Pitt in 4
Missouri upsets #16 Wichita State in 4 sets.
#3 Stanford cruises to Sweet 16, and will play equally rested Wisconsin, which swept #14 Iowa St.
#11 Utah will face #6 Texas (Utah took out Purdue Friday, UT beat NCSt)
#5 Nebraska swept Wazzu in 3, and will face Colorado, which blasted #12 Baylor
#13 BYU handled Oregon in 3, and will face #4Kentucky which survived a 2-0 deficit to win in 5 sets vs instate foe Western Kentucky. They were awfully close to gagging the host regional to Nebraska.
#2 Florida handled the Canes in 4, and will host #15 UCLA, which beat my dark horse Cal Poly in 4 sets.
#10 USC rallied to beat San Diego in 5 sets, and will face #7 Minnesota which ground out No Iowa in 4 sets.
BYU got lucky, I think, at the end of the 3rd, with the girls hand hitting the net, apparently the ball must have been down (out) which ends the play before the net touch. They didn't have audio on at the bar I was watching. Both the announcers and I agree with you, but apparently they couldn't conclusively determine if it was her hand or her braid. Seemed clear to me.
man does Colorado rely on Alexa Smith. 17 attacks in the first set. That's a huge number.she's getting a workout
MSU looks all kinds of out of sorts this afternoonAdvanced to get eliminated tomorrow. Joy.
Well alrighty then. But only after I have Tanya Harding pay Kelly Hunter a visit.
I guess I'm pullin' for the Huskers now.
head to head is the first tie breakerNo way.
already decided
Msu has the talent to win this. Psu is in everybody's head in the B1G except Nebraska for some reason.Nope
Psu is gonna serve all match at the msu fr.libero. if she can receive ok, Michigan St. Can make this a match. Gotta slow down Haleigh and serve aggressively which they know how to do.
I just watched that 4th set of Ill v MSU, I thought they botched a close deflection call that cost Msu match point at 27. Autumn Bailey then dominated w a kill and wicked ace to win it. Bailey, a Marquette transfer btw.
No way.it's about the wins
Penn State's loss to Nebraska was a better loss than Nebraska's loss to Wisconsin. (https://s3media.247sports.com/Uploads/Smilies/stir.gif)
I think Stanford wins it all.agree

Set 2 and 4 might be the best I've seen UNL play all year. Florida has athletes and size. They were a tough matchup. UNL was just on fire and extremely focused.crazy how well they played the 4th set. Take away the huge mental blunders of a bad rotation and an in the net error and it's even more impressive
Perhaps that's the new efficiency in volleyball.much talk about pass and serve
yup, it's only women's sport, but... it is a national championship for the B1GIt's a national championship for the Huskers.

PSU vs UNL 0-2the most impressive stat of the season
PSU vs Everyone else 33-0
Wow, you guys are really into volleyball.Where on the rez were you? I lived and taught in Gallup, NM for a couple years. My oldest son was born there. I spent a lot of weekends out in some gym or community center on the rez playing basketball. I about broke my ankle in the Window Rock Civic Center in one of those tournaments.
Quick story - in one of my early years on the Navajo Rez as a teacher, we had a staff volleyball game. It was in the gym, and everyone's warming up and stuff, and I take my shoes and socks off and play barefoot.
Everyone looked at me weird, and I realized growing up in FL that I had almost exclusively played beach volleyball my whole life - thus the no shoes thing. I just shrugged and played barefoot the whole game without incident.
Funny what we're used to, without considering it. Another example of this was when a group of us went out to dinner, and this guy from Indiana and I both had crab legs. Maybe 10 minutes into getting our plates, I had eaten all my crab and the remains were in a neat stack on my plate as he was struggling with his 2nd leg. I hadn't seen his struggling, but he looked at me like I was a magician, lol. I helped him out the rest of the way, getting the big, full morsels out.
-DCVB followed up their Conference Title by winning another one... this time in Basketball.
And most importantly, my HS alma matter Dublin Coffman advances to their fourth straight Ohio D1 Final Four.
Their current coach is on an 11 year run that has seen 11 straight Conference Titles, 11 straight Sweet 16s, 6 total Final Fours, and 4 State Championship Game appearances.
It appears Hunter Atherton is bound for UNC.Nice. The transfer taints her career just enough to allow Buckeye legend Nikki Cisco (11) to maintain the distinction of having the best College VB career of any player from my hometown.
