Title: Biggest blowouts for your school
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on February 20, 2018, 09:18:28 PM
Both wins and losses - the "holy sh*t" outcomes you wouldn't have envisioned going either way.
I'm limiting it to 1970 - two platoon football, integrated, etc.

And not just random games - I'm looking for ranked vs ranked games that everyone thought would be competitive, but turned into ugly curb-stomps.....

Florida
1982 - #20 Florida vs #3 Georgia - LOST 44-0

1990 - #9 Florida @ #5 Tennessee - LOST 45-3
1990 - #15 Florida vs #4 Auburn - WON 48-7

1993 - #8 Florida vs #3 West Virginia (Sugar Bowl) - WON 41-7

1995 - #2 Florida vs #1 Nebraska (Fiesta Bowl) - LOST 62-24

1996 - #1 Florida vs #12 LSU - WON 56-13
1996 - #1 Florida vs #16 Auburn - WON 51-10
1996 - #3 Florida vs #1 FSU (Sugar Bowl) - WON 52-20

2001 - #2 Florida vs #21 Miss State - WON 52-0
2001 - #4 Florida @ #14 S.Carolina (game I attended) - WON 54-17
2001 - #5 Florida vs #6 Maryland (Orange Bowl) - WON 56-23

2002 - #6 Florida vs #1 Miami - LOST 41-16

2006 - #2 Florida vs #1 Ohio St (NCG) - WON 41-14

2008 - #2 Florida @ #24 S.Carolina - WON 56-6

2015 - #19 Florida vs #17 Michigan (Citrus Bowl) - LOST 41-7

2016 - #15 Florida vs #1 Alabama (SECCG) - LOST 54-16

I intended this to be a "bigtime blowouts" thread, about when P5 teams scored 70+ or something.  But early on in the research, it got boring - everyone has 70 point games against New Mexico State or Pacific or Whoever Tech.

I then whittled it down to P5 vs P5, but again, there's tons of them.  Bama curb-stomping some random Cal team in the 70s or whatever.  Yawn.

So to shrink the pool or tighten the confines of the source material, I thought, "why not just look at ranked vs ranked" and do it by school?

So that's what I got.  There's many more 30-0 type beatdowns I excluded.  Plenty of sideways games where one team was ranked and the other wasn't.  But for a list that can be digested, incorporating a few decades of scores, this is what I ended up with.

There was a year in the 90s where Florida beat LSU 58-3 in Death Valley.  A decade later, now even, that's a holy sh*t score....but back then, LSU stunk.  So who cares, right?

That one year Miami beat ND like 58-7.  Ohhh, it's Notre Daaaaaame.  So?  They stunk that year.  The Canes thrashing #3 Texas in the Cotton Bowl in 1990 is much more noteworthy, 30 years after the fact.

I'll go through and post some other school's "wow" games, but everyone should do some of their own.

I'll go with the thread title instead of whatever in the hell you are doing.

Ohio State's biggest blowout win was 128-0 vs Oberlin. Which is awesome. I hate that school more than any other in the State.

I have no idea what OSU's biggest blowout loss was, and couldn't google it easily. I'd have to comb through their media guide.

Here's a site that has every schools biggest blowout win. Both all time, as well as the last 50 years.

https://www.allmysportsteamssuck.com/2016/08/18/the-biggest-blowout-victory-in-every-college-football-teams-history-last-50-years/ (https://www.allmysportsteamssuck.com/2016/08/18/the-biggest-blowout-victory-in-every-college-football-teams-history-last-50-years/)

Ohio State's biggest in the last 50 years was 76-0 against Florida A&M in 2013. That was a game that Kenny Guiton started because Braxton Miller was injured. Smooth Jazz tied a school record for TD passes in a game, all in the first half. Cardale Jones played the entire second half, iirc.

Also a ref wound up throwing a pretty mean block for an OSU running back.

Both were in the top 15 when MSU lost 48-3 at OSU last year.

My guess for win was going to be 1998 against a top 10 Notre Dame team.  MSU scored on 5 of their first 6 possessions, plus a Julian Peterson pick 6 to go up 42-3 with about 10 minutes left before halftime, but ND outscored MSU 20-3 over the remaining 40 game minutes.  I'll still say 22 points is their biggest MOV over a ranked team in a long time.

Found 2 MOVs larger than 22 against ranked teams.  35-0 win over #11 ND back in 1952.  27-3 over #16 Indiana to clinch a Rose Bowl in 1987.

I'm just going to go with a few memorable ones...

2004: Purdue 41, Notre Dame 16. This was Orton's senior year, and Purdue just hounded the hell out of Brady Quinn all day long. Quinn was a good QB when he had protection, but tended to fold under pressure, and Purdue brought the heat. The memorable point was Purdue backed up on their own 3, Orton throws a fade to Taylor Stubblefield on the right sideline (whose defender falls down during the catch) and rolls 97 yards for the TD. It was just one of those days for ND.

2008: Purdue 62, Indiana 10. Joe Tiller's final game, and Curtis Painter's final game. The team wanted to send them out in style, and did so with an utter dismantling of Indiana. This wasn't a "ranked vs ranked" game. In fact, it was two 3-win teams facing off (Purdue improving to 4-8, Indiana finishing 3-9). But it's a rivalry, and even when both teams aren't that good, you still want to destroy your opponent.

2003: Michigan 30, Purdue 3. This was an unexpected beat-down. In 2003 Purdue was quite good, with a solid running game, elite defense, and ranked #10 in the country at 6-1 coming into the game. Purdue was expected to be competitive. I was at a fraternity brother's wedding, and was hanging out in the basement of a church listening to the game on the radio with the groomsmen. We all had such high hopes, and were almost stunned by the way Michigan just bullied us on both sides of the ball all day long. Much like my fraternity brother's marriage, this one wasn't right from the start.

So, UGA beat Troy 66-0 for past 50 years, not really that bad a blow out in comparison.

I guess I'm happier about that.

Beating Tennessee this year 41-0 felt like a blowout.

My first Purdue football game as a student:  1992 home game against Cal.  Cal was coming off a 10-2 season and finishing ranked 8th in the AP poll.  They lost a lot to graduation, but still came in ranked 17th.

Purdue just kicked the stuffing out of them.  Halftime score was 38-3 and they let off the gas in the second half to finish 41-14.  The goal posts were ripped down in celebration.  Much booze was consumed.

That was also one of those games where a rabbit got onto the field and proceeded to run back and forth from end-zone to end-zone.  The rabbit had more yardage than Cal did that day.

Now, it turns out, Cal sucked that year and finished only 4-7, but it was one of those completely unexpected blowouts that this thread was looking for.

Alright, OSU's biggest blowout loss appears to be an 86-0 setback to the Wolverines in 1902. That was the year that the OAC was formed, with the Buckeyes as a founding member.

The 128-0 victory over Oberlin was in 1916, which was Chic Harley's freshman campaign. OSU went undefeated and untied, en route to their first ever Big Ten Title.

Alright, OSU's biggest blowout loss appears to be an 86-0 setback to the Wolverines in 1902.
The amazing thing about that to me is that the 86-0 win over Ohio State wasn't even among Michigan's top three wins that year.  They beat:
They also shutout Indiana, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Chicago, and Oberlin.  Case and Minnesota did manage to put points on the board against Fielding Yost's "point-a-minute" squad but not enough to win.  Michigan finished 11-0 outscoring their opponents 644-12.

The previous year they outscored their opponents 550-0 with the closest game being a 21-0 win in Columbus over the Buckeyes (Hey, at least we did better than their other 10 opponents!)  The following year they outscored their opponents 565-6 with the only points allowed being six points to Minnesota in a 6-6 tie (the Gophers were really good back then).

I remember the Badgers getting spanked by OOC teams in the 80's and 90's. Miami, Colorado, Syracuse.

I was at the 1989 Miami game, and participated in the "we scored first!" chant. It was a 51-3 final. I think Jimmie let his foot off the gas too.

I was at the 1988 Michigan game the year prior, and I don't think Bo let his foot off the gas in a 62-14 final.

30 years is a long time ago though, so I could be misremembering, but I'm pretty sure Bo liked to run it up on UW given what happened during his interview there.

If Purdue managed that, even for one season, I think it would be the most fun football season of my entire life.

Losses:
First, the Ohio State games:
2014 Big Ten Championship: #6 Ohio State vs. #11 Wisconsin: 59-0. Ouch.
1975 #1 Ohio State vs. unranked Wisconsin: 56-0
1979 #6 Ohio State vs. unranked Wisconsin: 59-0

Then some others:
1988 #19 Michigan vs. unranked Wisconsin: 62-14
1989 #3 Miami vs. unranked (and bad) Wisconsin: 51-3
1995 #13 Colorado vs. #21 Wisconsin: 43-7
1997 #17 Syracuse vs. #24 Wisconsin: 34-0 (I remember those last two all too well--both were season openers).

Wins:
1962: #8 Wisconsin vs. #1 Northwestern: 37-6

Then the Nebraska games:
2012 Big Ten Championship: unranked Wisconsin vs. #12 Nebraska: 70-31
2011: #7 Wisconsin vs. #8 Nebraska: 48-17
2014: #22 Wisconsin vs. #11 Nebraska: 59-24

1999 was good for these wins:
unranked Wisconsin at #12 Ohio State: 42-17 (turned out Ohio State was having a bad season, but a win like that at the Horseshoe doesn't come around very often--especially after going down 17-0).
#16 Wisconsin vs. #11 Michigan State: 40-10
#18 Wisconsin vs. Indiana: 59-0
#9 Wisconsin vs. Iowa: 41-3 (seeing as how Iowa is our biggest natural rival--since Minnesota hasn't been that good recently, this was a really big deal).

As was 2010:
yeah, it's Indiana, but still: #6 Wisconsin: 83-20
#5 Wisconsin vs. Northwestern: 70-23

I was at that 1999 Iowa game (and all the others, including OSU..), and that was probably the most emotional game I was ever at. The Dayne Game. Unreal atmosphere.

last time bama lost by 30+ was 1998 @ arky.

kinda the antithesis of this thread, but cool stat going on right now, bama hasn't lost by more than 14 since 2006 (uf by 15) (160 games).

rolltidefan, a game I almost included was Florida's 1991 win over Bama (35-0).  I think it really told everyone in the conference that Spurrier was legit.

But Bama beat UF 31-3 maybe 10 years later - the game where Bama's tiny (but good) WR destroyed his leg.

Ranked vs Ranked blowouts?  Hmm. Without looking them up there are a few that come to mind.

2016- Oklahoma drubbed us 56-28.  Went to this one.  Cold, pouring snow.   WVU actually sorta halfway made this a game briefly in the 4th quarter only for OU to open it up again.
2012- K State 52   WVU 14.  To this day the only game I’ve ever left before the 4th quarter started.
2012 Orange Bowl- WVU 70. Clemson 33

2011- LSU 47  WVU 21.
2008 Fiesta Bowl- WVU 48  Oklahoma 28.  Is this a blowout?  Idk.  It was certainly an unexpected outcome.  My bias probably makes me include this one.
2007- WVU 66  UConn 21.  Went to this one too.  As I leaving the stadium there was such an atmosphere of celebration because this win elevated WVU to #2 in the BCS.  I turned to my friend and said Pitt should just forfeit the next week.  Of course, the next week we lost 13-9 in one of the biggest upsets in recent college football history.

2004 Gator Bowl- Maryland 41 WVU 7- There was a stretch where Fridge owned Rod.  This was a rematch of a regular season game where Maryland smoked WVU as well.

OAF already covered Florida trouncing WVU in the Sugar Bowl.  There may be others that I’m not remembering.

lost by 17 to the Sooners in 2000 while the Sooners were #3
1971 the Huskers beat Bear's Tide by 32 in the Orange - Tide finished #4 that season behind the 3 Big 8 programs
