Title: IF you had the ear of a former Division 1A HC....
Post by: Drew4UTk on February 20, 2018, 05:05:55 PM
(....some habits are hard to break... yes, Div1A)

what would you ask them?

...... not a specific coach, mind you, but just general questions?

as an example and in no particular order (ignoring 'lead in' in other words) :

- do you recruit for your scheme or does your roster dictate your scheme?  How long does it take to make the transition from 'what you have' to 'what you want', and do players you've 'inherited' suffer?

- do coaches see the tiers fans see?  would you be comfortable calling up a prior recent national championship coach and expect to be given opportunity to talk?

- when you're bidding out for coordinators, what do you look for?  how much 'hands on' do you have with the way they coach or what they implement? is that something ironed out prior or is it a work in progress (and dependent/tied into the first question)?

- what type of expectations do you have of your team on a timeline? I've heard it said, depending on tier and past recruiting success (recruiting parts for your scheme) coupled with the back office's 'scheduling' of games now and in the future, that there are some seasons 'circled' where demands are made of you... can you elaborate on this process if it exists?

- what are the kinds of relationships you have with recruiting sources?  Do you have preferred HS's?  Do you rely on networks and those coaches approaching you?  Do you leverage Alum? how about present student assistants?

y'all see where i'm coming from?

What would you ask?

What is your 4th down philosophy as it relates to when to go for it, and when to punt, kick a FG?

This assumes I wouldn't lead with, why are you always punting on your opponent's side of the field on 4th down.

What are your thoughts on how Holding is enforced in the current game compared to years past? What impact does it have, if any?

Q: What did you do about "problem" kids in your program?

Problems could be as simple as being late to team meetings, on up through kids who committed violent acts against society.

The "problem" kid is either a 4th stringer or your star tailback. Difference?

Q: How did you handle a recruit who was a prima donna, with "involved" parents?

Q: If you were starting your coaching career today, which coaches would you want to work for, or which programs? Which conference?

Q: What are your thoughts about paying players, outside of the value of the education, cost of attendance and room/board/training?

I got a lot of questions.

You have to choose one:
No athletic scholarships or pay salaries to players in the revenue sports?

awesome, gentlemen!!!!

I've never done this before, and i'll be damned if i look like a total fool when it happens... the best way in my experience to avoid that is to be prepared....

and that is what this is... getting my shit together..

more on that later.

for now, the questions are:

hopefully more will be presented... from these questions, they'll need to be edited and the question attributed to who asked it (if you would, and if you've contributed, add your name, who your team is, and your location as in state)...

be brutal in the editing and commentary... for instance, the first question on this iteration is :

Quote
Q: No athletic scholarships or pay salaries to players in the revenue sports? by: SFBadger96, Wiscy fan from Ohio
A: I already know his answer to this... we discussed it before and he's all for paying players, retorting "it's time"... therefor we can reach in deeper into the question by possibly asking "Knowing how you feel about play for pay for the student athletes on your roster, it brings to mind that your position may not be isolated... Is this the case or is there at least marginally widespread support for paying the collegiate athlete in the coaching ranks?"....

dig in gents!!!!! let's make this thing ROCK!!!!!

Because attracting players is a recruiting process rather than a draft or other "equitable" method, there is a natural imbalance between power or "helmet" teams and the rest. How would you improve parity between schools and conferences?

Why is parity important? The so called helmet schools are helmet schools because they devoted the money, time and effort over a long periods of time to develop their current situation. I see nothing fair subsidizing mediocre johnny come latelys so as to level the field. If somebody can't compete they need to get out of the water.

True. Some schools devoted money, time and effort to football...
...others put Neil Armstrong and Eugene Cernan on the moon.
You could say Purdue embraced a different sort of helmet.

How much direct coaching did you do versus overseeing what your assistants did during practice?

How often did you interfere with how the DC or HC called plays?

Would you go to a freshman QB in the second half of an NC game if your started was playing reasonably well?

So... it's no longer IF you had the ear. Welcome to Coach Q.

How would you approach/address  the current 7-on-7 craze?
