If there is a list of greatest teams to ever finish with two non-wins, these teams both belong on it. Both were a couple plays from undefeated.

Illinois in 1985 had a season that sounds more typical for MSU: They beat the Buckeyes and tied Michigan but got obliterated by Iowa and lost to a couple of mediocre teams.

Nebraska's two losses in 1980 were by a combined total of eight points and the teams that beat them each finished 10-2 and ranked in the top-5.

SP+ includes 1 NC in its top 10 from the 80s.  I'm normally a stats guy, but in looking over some of their really highly-ranked teams, their formula seems to REALLY value beating the ever-loving shit out of average-and-worse teams.  What you do against fellow strong teams seems nearly meaningless, as long as you win some and lose some.

All that being said, I think OU's run from 85-87 was evidence that it's not just about the stats.  Matchup and talent level matter, obviously.  I hold talent level much higher than matchup, but whatever.

On this game, I think it would be badass to watch.  Nebraska shut down the run like few teams ever have.  Of course a Bo-led UM team wants to pound the ball, but I don't think they'd be able to.  The problem is that Harbaugh's 64% comp rate would have allowed the Wolverines to move the ball and score.
Nebraska had a great option game, but 2 of UM's best players were on the d-line.  They weren't just gap-stoppers, but penetrators.  I think Messerschmidt & Hammerstein would retard the Husker run attack just enough.

so, is this tourney to pick which team would win in a game on the field, or which team you think was the better team overall?

I hadn't looked at the matchup for a game on the field.  I just looked at season resumes.

difficult to matchup different teams from different seasons - in the same decade isn't so bad, but.........

matching 97 Nebraska vs 97 Michigan is fun, but a team from 1980 and 1989 could be problematic

besides, my love of the Huskers and my strong dislike of Michigan wasn't going to allow for enough logic to sway my vote

When they're not far apart in terms of years, it's easy to imagine them playing.  OL weren't any bigger in 1985 than in 1980.

I like the idea of Whoa Nellie deciding it.

Anyone else got a better idea???

Sorry, dinner and other business delayed my game-playing.
.
Halftime:
6  '80 Nebraska
3  '85 Michigan
.
N:  Quinn:  3-3 for 68 yds
Redwine:  6 car, 57 yds
Craig:  5 car, 5 yds
Franklin:  7 car, 6 yds
.
UM:  Harbaugh:  8-11 for 95 yds
Morris:  8 car, 25 yds
Wilcher:  6 car, 19 yds
Jokisch:  2 rec, 43 yds
.
Definitely a low-scoring game between 2 teams that stop the run and insist on running, themselves.  The Huskers were able to drive to the 10 of Michigan, taking advantage of a short field, but were stymied on 3 straight runs.

Final score:
6  Nebraska '80
3  Michigan '85
-------------------------------
We set offensive football back a few decades, guys.  That's what happens when you can't run on someone, but keep running it.  Both teams did this.
It was actually a good, close game, but Nebraska should have won by more.  They had 4 drives begin in UM territory, but came away with only 3 points (a missed FG, 2 turnover on downs).  The Nebraska defense was stout, holding UM to under 100 yds rushing and picking off 3 Harbaugh passes.
Jarvis Redwine managed to rush for 101 yards, but couldn't find the end zone.  Quinn was efficient throwing the ball, but I was playing passive - not being either team - and letting their run/pass ratios determine the play-calling.  If I had played as both teams, I would have passed more with Nebraska and tried more outside runs with Michigan.  Quinn didn't do anything on the ground.
The main thing was field position, as Nebraska won that battle easily - UM always seemed to have 70 yards to go.  Although on one drive, Nebraska started at its own 2 and got into FG position (missed it).  Otherwise, they had a short field much of the time, just couldn't punch it in.  Both defense shined (obviously).
