Looks like O'Connell is off to an early lead, but it was a tough choice w/ Taulia.  I looked at their stats, and Aidan is just a little better.  He would probably have been a lot better if he were the full-time for the whole year as well instead of splitting time for a few games.

The distance between Stroud and O'Connell last year for #1 and #2 in Total QBR was smaller than the difference between O'Connell and #3 (Payton Thorne).

So arguably O'Connell as #2 is actually easier than Stroud at #1

Biased here for sure, but this is an easy pick.

O'Connell can play.  I've heard "system" QB thrown around.  Its unfounded.  Brohm does not run a gimmick that only works in college.  Purdue runs a modern Pro Offense.

O'Connell has developed a good understanding of that offense, as well as an ability to read the defense against it.

He's not as physically talented as Stroud or Tagovailoa.  Mentally he's at the top of the conference, at least equal to Stroud and above the rest.

Poor Tanner Morgan has been starting forever for Minnesota and can't even merit a spot in the top 5.  He has really fallen since making 2nd team all big ten in 2019.

Spencer Petras and Graham Mertz have been starting forever too I guess but nobody has ever thought of them as all Big Ten potential.

Still if Sean Clifford made your list,  there has got to be room for Tanner Morgan.

Tanner Morgan's stats for 2021:

149/250 for 2,044 yards, 10 TDs and 9 INTs.  59.6% completion percentage.

Sean Clifford's stats for 2021:

261/428 for 3,107 yards, 21 TDs and 8 INTs.  61% completion percentage.

I think it's pretty clear why he didn't make the cut.

OK, gotcha.  I guess this was based on 2021 stats only,  which I guess makes as much sense as any.  It's just weird to see a guy that's actually been named 2nd team all-big ten in the past not even get nominated for 2nd team all big ten this time.

But times change, and you are probably right, nobody was going to vote for Tanner Morgan anyway.  so nevermind.

Last season and the Covid season.

Mertz started off like crazy against Illinois in his first start. Then he got Covid and has not been the same. Probably a coincidence. Last year PC was the HC, OC and QB coach. Anyway, changes have been made and I think it's really going to help the QB room.

This year he is the HC.

Bobby Engram is the OC.

Keller Chryst is the QB coach (not on the field). From the UW bio:

Chryst played quarterback for three seasons at Stanford, going 11-2 as a starter for the Cardinal, before playing a graduate transfer season at Tennessee in 2018. He was named a captain at both schools and received the team’s “My All” award during his season with the Volunteers.

A two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree, Chryst graduated from Stanford in 2018 with a degree in Science, Technology and Society.

He is the son of longtime NFL coach Geep Chryst and the nephew of Badgers head coach Paul Chryst.

I wouldn't say that it's solely based on the 2021 season, but more on the outlook of how they will play in 2022.  I fear that Tanner Morgan's big year in 2019 was more of a product of 2 NFL WRs more than his own ability.  He seemed to regress a lot after those guys moved on.  I did vote for him last year as a preseason All Big Ten QB ahead of the unknown guys, but now that those guys are known and played much better than him, it is hard to move him back up there.  It's a pretty good group of QBs this year, so these kinds of things can happen.

For example, if Penix had stayed at Indiana, I don't think he would be getting any votes for the preseason all Big Ten QB, despite having a very nice 2020 season.  He was bad last year and not trending in a good direction, while Taulia, Stroud and O'Connell have definitely stepped up.
