Title: 2018 Big Ten Baseball
Post by: ELA on February 17, 2018, 10:47:51 PM
The high here on Tuesday is 74 and meaningful baseball is happening.  Praise the Lord!

Hopes?  Expectations?  MSUs ace looks like the future pro he was expected to be.  Rest of the team looks rough.  Not sure how good Fresno State is supposed to be, but MSU is starting down an 0-3 start.

Tempe, Ariz. – Leading 4-3 after six innings, the Nebraska baseball team (1-0) scored four runs in the seventh inning on its way to an 8-3 win over UC Riverside in the season opener at Tempe Diablo Stadium on Friday evening.

Senior right-hander Luis Alvarado, making his first career start, struck out a career-high nine batters in 4.2 innings. Junior righty Matt Waldron earned the win with 1.1 innings, while junior righty Robbie Palkert earned the save in 3.0 shutout innings.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TEMPE, Ariz. — Nebraska wore down the ace of a Pac-12 team for three runs in the middle innings and five pitchers combined to stifle Washington State in an 8-3 victory Saturday afternoon to start a doubleheader.

The Cornhuskers (2-1) then lost their second game 8-1 to UC Riverside at Tempe Diablo Stadium. NU wraps up the weekend Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against Washington State.

OSU starts out 3-1 in the Snowbird Classic. A sweep of Milwaukee, and a split with Canisius.

Two games against each the Utes and the Beavers next week, in the Big Ten-Pac 12 Challenge.

Got swept at Fresno.  Positives?  3 of the 4 losses we're by 1.  Real problem is the last couple years MSU did surprisingly well non conference, then collapsed in Big Ten play.  Now they aren't even putting themselves in position non conference.

Defending BTN tournament champion Iowa starts 3-0 with one win over Oakland, and two wins over Old Dominion.
I don't follow this sport at the college level carefully, but I thought Iowa lost some good pitchers to graduation and MLB draft.

Iowa has come back from decades of less than mediocrity after ISU and UNI gave up scholarship baseball, and after Iowa hired a very good head baseball coach, Rick Heller. He is in approximately his 4th or 5th season.

Iowa is now 5-1. Had a 14-6 defeat to Ball State.

Plays D-III Cornell College 2-27-2018 in Iowa City. Global warming allows February baseball in Iowa.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Tyler Cropley's two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning sent the University of Iowa baseball team to an 8-6 victory over Oakland on Saturday afternoon at the Sunshine State Classic Series.
NEW ORLEANS -- Junior Cole McDonald pitched seven strong innings to lead the University of Iowa baseball team to an 8-2 victory over New Orleans on Sunday in its All-State Sugar Bowl Baseball Classic finale.
Iowa's offense spotted McDonald an early 4-0 lead, plating two runs in the first and second innings. Senior Tyler Cropley had a two-run double in the first, hitting a line drive to left center field to knock in Robert Neustrom and Kyle Crowl.

Iowa is up to 8-2. I think the level of competition they played so far has not been very high.

Their goal as a program under Coach Rick Heller is to make it back to the College World Series for the 1st time since 1972; it is an achievable goal. Probably will not happen this year.

2013 Indiana, and 1984 Michigan, are the latest Big Ten teams to make it. I was looking at the CWS history, and in the 1950s and 60s the Big Ten won six CWS Championships.

Wichita, Kan. – The Nebraska baseball team (6-5) handed Wichita State its first loss of the season in a 10-9 victory in 10 innings at Eck Stadium on a windy Sunday afternoon. In its last 15 Sunday games, Nebraska is 14-0-1, dating back to the 2016 season.

The Huskers trailed 7-2 after four innings, but battled back before Jesse Wilkening’s go-ahead home run in the 10th inning. NU faced a 9-7 deficit in the ninth inning before Zac Repinski smashed a two-run homer to send the game to extra innings.

Screw the Shockers, I'll never forgive them for 1989.

This past weekend Northwestern came to Austin and took the first game of the series on Friday 6-2.  But the Horns bounced back with 3 consecutive wins (10-7, 16-3, and 12-1) to close out the series.

Stanford's coming to Austin this weekend for 4-game series and I should be able to make 2 or 3 of them.  Good times.

Nebraska lost its first home opener in 40 years (that seems impossible, not sure if they loaded up on Doane or something) in dropping 14-8 to Cal Poly.  They made up for it by beating them, 4-0, 22-3, and 13-2 to close the weekend series.

Senior right-hander Luis Alvarado earned Big Ten Pitcher-of-the-Week honors on Monday.

Alvarado, a Puerto Rico native, threw 7.0 scoreless innings to earn the win against Cal Poly on Friday. He allowed only five hits and one walk, while striking out eight Mustangs, one shy of his career high.

Alvarado, a Preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA, has 28 strikeouts this season, which ranks second in the Big Ten, behind Indiana’s Jonathan Stiever (32). Alvarado is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA in four starts this season.

Computer rankings agree.
Right now the conference looks a little upside down.  Maryland and Michigan are having REALLY disappointing seasons, and MSU seems to have bottomed out.  But OSU is back, and Rutgers looks to be fielding their best team.
Northwestern and Penn State are well behind the rest of the conference, but MSU, UM and Maryland make up the group immediately in front of them.

Anyone who is anyone who is anyone that I ever played with or against was either drafted or went south.  Period.  There is ZERO baseball heritage at PSU, even with the fact they play in that nice stadium (they share with the A level Spikes) and recruiting territory isn't fertile remotely.  Can't be good in everything, and PSU just isn't in townball.

It is nice to see that other schools in the conference do carry the torch a bit tho.  I still think the midwest is a good place for talent and some of those kids are staying home.

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska baseball team (13-10, 1-1 Big Ten) evened the series against Minnesota with a 8-2 win over the Golden Gophers at Hawks Field on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Scott Schreiber smashed two home runs as part of a 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs and three runs scored. Schreiber now has a team-high six home runs this season and 32 homers for his career, two shy of joining Nebraska’s top-10 career home runs list. Saturday was the fifth multi-home run game of Schreiber’s career, including his two-home run effort against Northern Colorado on March 14.

Junior righty Matt Waldron made his fourth start of the season and threw 7.0 innings, giving up two runs (one earned run) and recorded five strikeouts. Reliever Paul Tillotson tossed 2.0 scoreless innings and allowed only one hit, while recording one strikeout.

The Huskers and Gophers conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT). The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

Here is a hopeful sign. Iowa defeats ranked Illinois in Game 1 of their series after going 1-1 against ranked Indiana.

These limited results start to suggest the Big Ten remains well-behind most of the rest of the country in this sport.

Iowa appears to be a good Big Ten team having gone 2-1 against the two highest ranked Big Ten teams, Indiana (11th) and Illinois (25th). Meanwhile Iowa couldn't compete with baseball semi-powerful teams Missouri State and UNLV, going 0-4 against those schools, neither of which are in the Top 25.

Conference has improved quite a bit over the past 6-7 years, but this year certainly appears to be a step back.  In baseball I wouldn't read too much into a 2-1 record as evidence of anything though.

Florida plays a spaced-out 3-game series each year vs FSU.  One game early, then one in Jacksonville mid-year, and a third game later on.  After sweeping the Noles last year and the year before, Florida has won the first 2 this year.  If you include the 2016 Super Regional, which UF took 2/3, the Gators have beaten the Noles 10 of the last 11 times.

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska baseball team (22-23, 6-10 Big Ten) won the rubber match against Maryland, 5-2, at Hawks Field on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Matt Warren earned the win after going a season-high 6.2 shutout innings. He recorded four strikeouts, while allowing five hits and one walk. Paul Tillotson made a relief appearance of 0.2 inning before Jake Hohensee notched his team-high 11th save in 1.2 innings of work.

Nebraska turned four double plays during the game and for the second consecutive game, didn’t commit any errors. The two teams were scoreless through three innings before Nebraska scored one run in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Scott Schreiber continued his torrid pace with a solo home run to right field. It marked his second home run of the weekend, his 18th of the season and the 44th of his career to put him in a tie for fourth on NU’s career chart with Alex Gordon.

Iowa took 2 out of 3 from 17th ranked Okie State this weekend.
It's been an odd year. Iowa played the top teams in the Big Ten, and stands 9-7 in conference play. The next two weekends are against bottom feeders, so the conference record should improve.
Winning the Okie State series should get Iowa off the bubble for the tournament selection if they follow through the next two weeks and take care of business..

Nebraska’s baseball season ended Saturday with a win over Illinois that still left the Huskers several games short of qualifying for the Big Ten tournament. At 24-28, NU had its worst record since the John Sanders era, which ended in 1997.

The five-year look back on Nebraska’s performance in the Big Ten suggests the Huskers are among the better teams in the league, but not the best, or even in the top three. Here are the Big Ten winning percentages (conference games only) since 2014:

Indiana (.652), Illinois (.627), Minnesota (.612), Michigan (.602), Iowa (.585), Nebraska (.573), *Maryland (.537), Michigan State (.496), Purdue (.359), Northwestern (.345), *Rutgers (.319), Penn State (.256),

*Four years instead of five.

Make it three years, and Nebraska ties for fourth:

Minnesota (.721), Indiana (.629), Michigan (.606), Nebraska (.571), Iowa (.571), Maryland (.521), Ohio State (.518), Illinois (.500).

NU is among the top half of teams in the Big Ten. But it’s not the best over five years — that’s Indiana. And it isn’t the best over three years — that, by some margin, is Minnesota. Nebraska’s three-year and five-year Big Ten winning percentages are slightly worse than its winning percentage over the whole seven years NU has been in the Big Ten (.581).

That means the Huskers — relative to the rest of the Big Ten — are slightly worse off than they were when they entered the league, coming off three straight years of missing the tournament for the Big 12, which was a far better league than the Big Ten.

The Big Ten has improved. Nebraska probably has, too, but not quite at the rate of its conference peers.

Of the nine conference titles won since 2014 — five regular season, four tournament titles — Nebraska has one. Minnesota and Indiana have two, while Illinois, Iowa, Ohio State and Michigan each have one along with Nebraska. Seven teams have won Big Ten title of some kind over the past five years.

So the Husker baseball team is right where it started when it joined the league. A little better than average — in the Big Ten.

Title: Re: 2018 Big Ten Baseball

Interesting analysis, Fearless.  Thanks.

Funny, those numbers might lead one to believe that Maryland is perennial good team.  But the truth is that those five years are by far the best five years in Maryland baseball history (it includes two regional titles).  Before that, they were never very good.  It doesn't help that, like Nebraska, they came from a much better league.

The Terps really hit a wall this year after replacing the departing manager (to Virginia Tech) with the third base coach.  With largely the same core of players, last year's NCAA qualifiers left an astronomical number of runners on base and finished under .500.  If he's still around next year, he's got to find a way to fix it.

Nebraska had been as good as ever in the 2000s, but they've dropped off, and the Big Ten is MUCH better than it was a decade ago.  It's not a power league at all, but it's typically not a one bid league either.  MSU had a year in like 2010ish where they won the regular season title, and made it to the conference tourney final, before losing to Illinois, and still didn't get an at large.  That wouldn't happen today.

Should have...
I don't disagree that the BIG is improving in baseball.   It has.  It is now producing multiple teams into the tourney.   That is a significant  improvement from say 15-20 years ago.

I still will say the BIG12 was a tougher baseball conference when UNL left  compared to the BIG today.   I don't think UNL has improved.  UNL continues to slide.

I'm fairly certain, on this (old) board even, I predicted Nebraska baseball would regress by joining the B1G.   I'll admit I don't follow college baseball like I used to, especially when I was in school, but there's no way in hell they were/are going to recruit better by being the B1G.      Yes, the XII then and now is a much better league, so the drop of late is not good.  I admit not sure how much is recruiting, vs manager/coaches, as well as an improved B1G.

Losing Van Horn (while hardly a shocker, as he went for a top tier baseball job, and had his own state ties) no doubt didn't help.   I was just thrilled they finally moved on from John Saunders as he was milquetoast to say the least at the end of his 20 yr run.   Anderson didn't really leave Nebraska's program on a high note upon leaving the XII.  They were in the cellar at least twice.

DVH was an excellent baseball coach, losing him was definitely a major blow to Nebraska.  I haven't followed Nebraska baseball since the move, but did enjoy playing y'all in the B12.

I could guess that the move hasn't helped recruiting and has likely harmed it, but that's based on no evidence at all.

MSU-Indiana game has been interesting.  MSU had 10 hits, and drew 3 walks through 6, but only had 5 runs to show through it.  Hoosiers kept getting out of it.  Indiana had on baserunner, a walk, and had no hits.  But it was only 5-0

Since then, it has totally flipped.  MSU has only had one baserunner since, via walk.  Indiana has had all kinds of runners in scoring position and can't get key hits.  5-2 going to the 9th.

Could be worse,  You could be like Michigan and have a loss because you walked a guy who stole second because that ball 4 was actually thrown behind the catcher, and then since third base wasn't manned, he proceeded to go all the way to third.  One RBI later.....

Eh, that was a tie game, it's not like they were tasting victory.  MSU was up 5-0 and rolling, and was still up 5-2 with 2 outs in the 9th.  Plus, not an elimination game for UM, and they are already in the NCAA tourney either way.

Florida is the overall #1 seed, despite losing 6 of the last 7.  Injuries to our ace and catcher probably were taken into account.  Both will be able to play, going forward.

Indiana will be at our regional here in Austin.  Looks like they've got a couple of very good pitchers, the best of which I'd expect they'll throw in their first game against the Aggies so I don't imagine we'll see him if Texas and Indiana meet.

We'll probably try to open with our #4/5 pitchers and some relievers, to set up our normal weekend rotation for later in the regional.  Bats were pretty dead in our B12 tournament games, that's my biggest concern heading into NCAA tournament play.

Gonna be fun, I love NCAA tournament time!

Seemed like a bit of a reach, but they should be able to sign him below slot value, but above where he was projected (6th-7th round) and use the extra money to sign the high school outfielder they took later, where signability was supposedly an issue.

Yeah, I think you have your total pool you can use, with suggested slot value.  So to sign a guy for way over slot, you have to sign a guy for way under.  So to free up the money to do that, they draft a kid in the 3rd, who is projected lower, but who they value somewhat higher, and then sign him for under slot, but still above what he would have gotten had he fallen to where he was expected, then you can use your unused money to sign someone else (in this case their 2nd round OF pick) for above slot value.
I think it was part of two CBAs ago where picks were holding teams hostage, with the legitimate option to go back to school, and small market teams were forced to pass on the best available players due to signability issues.

Anyway, Horns win game3 against Tennessee Tech and advance to the College World Series, back home in Omaha.

Well they just signed the HS OF for double his slot value to keep him from going to San Diego, so the money has to come from somewhere.
My guess is Clemens doesn't get 3rd round money, but gets more than 6th/7th round money, and the Tigers reached to take a kid in the 3rd, they wanted in the 5th, still saved enough money to sign the high school kid, and all parties make out.
To pull that off you have to find a kid you already have rated above consensus, and then take him even higher than you want him.  Seems like that's what they did with Clemens.  And so far in this tourney the kid ain't disappointing.  I'm excited to have him in the fold.

CWS Pairings:

Bracket 1:
Oregon State vs North Carolina
Mississippi State vs Washington

Bracket 2:
Arkansas vs Texas
Florida vs Texas Tech

Double-elimination within each bracket, with the winners of each meeting in a best-of-3 in the WS.

I preferred the old 48-team field with 8 regionals of 6 teams each in a double-elimination tournament.  It made for a VERY festive near-week of college baseball, with so many fans from different teams all coming to one place.

You also had a true double-elimination tournament in Omaha which I prefer slightly (except for a few years when it was double-elimination until the final game, and a team coming out of the loser's bracket could beat a team that hadn't lost a single game, and "win" the championship, like stoopid Wichita State did to Texas in 1989.  Bastages.  But I digresss...)

But with the current format, there's at least some nice symmetry.  The regional is a 4-team double elimination tournament, the super is a best of 3 series, and then the sequence repeats with a 4-team double-elimination tournament in your side of the bracket in Omaha, capped off with a final best of 3 series for the championship.

Pretty much all of the changes have been made to package it better for TV, so whether I like it or not, I must live with it.

Of the 5 or 6 times I went to Rosenblatt for the CWS, I don't think there was a time, where there wasn't a conversation, about who was playing who, and when the next day.  The format was not that simple to follow.   I didn't really care, I was there just to be there and enjoy the scene.    I'm not sure if its the same vibe at TDA park, but CWS is a fantastic event to attend, IMO much better than NCAA Hoops Tournament which remains convention like.

Did you ever get to attend one of the old 6-team regionals?  Preferably with your own favorite school hosting?  You might be too young, they killed that format in 1998.
It was really, really special.  Way more fun than a 4-team regional.

Just the 'old' CWS format, which as I noted was perfectly fine, merely hard to explain.

Florida's good enough to do it, but I'd think the pitching rotation has got to be stretching thin at this point?  Your 1 and 2 are as good as any in the country (probably better than any in the country), but Kowar pitched a lot against Texas.  Maybe Singer could come back in a potential game 2?

MSU has been fun to watch, good for them pulling it together after all their troubles this season.  Oregon State has some grit, but I think the Bulldogs have more at this point.  Should be a fun final couple days of bracket play.

I always find the 2-for-1 games fascinating. Does the team that’s down have the arms? Does the one that’s up throw it’s best first to try to ice it, hold off looking ahead a little bit? Can an offensive surge in a big spot swing it?

The team in the winner's bracket generally has the luxury of throwing its 3rd weekend starter, and should definitely do so, because then its rotation is set up once again for the best-of-3 in the final series.  The team in the loser's bracket is most likely already burned, being forced to throw a midweek starter in game 4, and then scrape together some kind of Johnny All-Staff if they're able to take it to Game 5.
Of course, that all assumes you have a legitimate 3rd weekend starter.  In the case of  Texas this season, we didn't even have a legitimate Friday or Saturday guy, mush less a Sunday starter, which is why I'm proud of how well the team played down the stretch.  It really had no business being in Omaha this year, but we actually get our two best pitchers back from injury next year, plus all of these role-players that stepped up late in the year.  The Longhorns are going to be a much better baseball team next year.

All the more remarkable after having 3 first round pitchers drafted the last two years.....Sully's a helluva recruiter and pitching guru.  He hasn't shied away from pitching the 'other' guy rather than pushing Singer up a day for a big game this year, so we'll see if that holds in Omaha.

Turns out college beisbol can be even less predictable than college football.

I was right about that OSU-MSU game having drama, although it didn't really materialize until the bottom of the 9th.  That was exciting.

I think the final series will be pretty great, both are complete teams and as always a lot will depend on how well the starting pitching rotation sets up.  Arkansas will definitely have an advantage there.  But I won't count out the Beavs just yet.

While I haven't lived in NE since Van Horn was the HC at Nebraska, I never sensed any animus in his departure for Arkansas.  He took the program to heights they had never been, and its not like he left for Texas (or some other XII rival).  That's his home/alma mater.  Nebraska fans are smart enough to recognize why that would make sense, look no further than the gridiron.

And now, winner takes all.  Gonna miss college baseball season, but that's the way it goes.

Looking like the pigs probably should have just gone ahead and caught that pop up last night.

Man, now that game3 was a drubbing.  I think Oregon State and Florida were the best teams all season, that probably should have been the final, but Arkansas had a great season and put it together at the right time.

That freshman pitcher for OSU was absolutely unbelievable all tourney long, the single best pitching performance I've ever watched at the CWS, even better than Huston Street which is saying something.

I thought Florida would certainly win it all. But it is baseball. Winning streaks sometimes overwhelm. I suspect that happened here.

Yeah, with baseball you can't get too upset about it.  All you can do is get to Omaha as often as possible.
