Title: Games You Plan On Attending This Fall 2022
Post by: CatsbyAZ on June 13, 2022, 10:52:25 AM
With rising airfare/hotel costs cutting into my willingness to travel (already cancelled next month’s planned weekend trip to Chicago), we’ll see how many of the below plans I go through with:

Sept 10: Mississippi St @ Arizona?

Sept 24: Toledo @ San Diego State – Aztecs will move to new, smaller on-campus stadium from their previous home field once shared with the Chargers

Oct 8: Washington @ Arizona State – too many Scottsdale/Tempe buddies not to turn an ASU game as an excuse to visit

Oct 29: Arkansas @ Auburn – annual Auburn home game, will combine with visits to several museums in Montgomery

Nov 12 TCU @ Texas – finally the long awaited Longhorns home game; unfortunately, they might already be a middling team this late into the season, as the Horns were last year

Throw in maybe another Arizona or SD State home game along with a game in Vegas for either the conference championship or bowl, and we’ll see how many of these games can be gotten around to.

Honestly, probably none unless we decide to hit Gainesville or a Badger bowl game down here.

All Gopher home games except Rutgers.

The schedule re-rack did me no favors, moving the road games I want to go from easy trips to hard decisions.

Another group of friends is going to Madison Thanksgiving weekend and was pushing our group to go. My patience for the NFL level of alcohol-fueled stupidity that is Camp Randall ran out many years ago.

Zero, at this point.  I checked prices for the Oregon game, nope.  Prices for any decent opponent are over $200 for bad seats.

I usually do the Big Ten title game and thinking either/both of Ohio State @ Penn State and Ohio State @ Northwestern.

Games I'd like to see someday are OU at Nebraska and OSU @ PSU.  A night game at BR would be neat, something at West Point and UDubb.

You are not picking the right seats. Gotta be between the 40's, under the upper deck. Never had drunken issues there when I had my seats.

Already have my tickets to OSU-UM game.  Taking my wife to her first college football game and then driving up to Cleveland for the Browns-Bucs game the next day.

We bought season tickets to the Arizona Cardinals because my Boston wife wants to see the Pats-Cards and Bucs-Cards games here, it was cheaper than buying tickets for the season and sellng the extra games than buying individual tickets for the 2 games.

Anyone who has ever been to a game with me knows that I never drank before the games. Always waited until after, because I wanted to see and remember the game.

Try again. :)

Hmmm. Not sure. I used to work a lot of weekends, but might go to the odd game when a friend had a ticket.

Smattering of schools nearby, one mid-major is supposed to be a pretty good show.

If it's the school I think you're close to, they have a sweet logo.

No super spicy games on the schedule, and the move up might mean some lopsided games. Still, some good time outside in a beautiful part of the country is never bad.

Ooooo, that'll be fun.

I've been to one game in Oxford. Feel like it's a perfect 1-2 day kinda town. I was a cliche and did Ajax diner followed by some fancy ice cream and on the square and a trip to Square Books. Very tourist, but very, very good.

I've lived in Pittsburgh since 2006, and never been to a Pitt football game.  Granted neither have most people in Pittsburgh.

MSU played here like a month after I moved, and I had tickets, but then got the stomach flu.

Was supposed to sit in a suite for a game in 2008 (I think against Buffalo?), but they overbooked it.

Tried to buy tickets to the Notre Dame game in 2009, but even secondary market was insanely expensive

Was literally at the gate for 2015 against Virginia, and we decided to go watch games at the bar.

OT question:

Is Pittsburgh gonna be your permanent home base now? I seem to recall a time when you considered it a short-term thing. Maybe I'm not remembering correctly.

I just moved there for law school, but then I married a Pittsburgh girl, we bought a home here, then built a home here, and our older 2 are in school here.  So yeah, absent some sort of career move, I'm here

I average an ASU game about once every other year. ASU games are very ASU-centric. Meaning those at the game or following the Sun Devils locally are by extension tied to ASU in some way. It’s not like going to Indiana, Ohio or Michigan where everybody grows up rooting for a state school no matter their future or lack thereof with any particular university.

Do either of you make it elsewhere across the Phoenix sports scene? Cardinals, Suns, or Diamondbacks games; Baseball Spring Training, PGA Phoenix Open, NASCAR at PHX Raceway, Fiesta Bowl?

Bought season tickets for the Cardinals this year, so my wife can attend the Patriots and Bucs games and sell the rest.  Maybe go to another game or two.

Only been to one diamondbacks game this season.  Diamondbacks gave the Arizona Cystic Fibrosis Foundation a suite for the Reds-Diamonback game last week and since I am on the board for CFs annual golf Scramble, I was invited to attend.  Otherwise, I go on occasion if the Reds or the Red Sox are in town.

I haven't followed Pro Basketball since the days of Bird-Magic.  I went to a Celtic-Suns game a couple of years ago.  (Notice the Boston theme events, my wife loves her home town teams), but blah.

Haven't been to a spring training game in years.  If the Reds training camp wasn't clear across the valley I might consider going there, but it is over an hour drive from my house.

Never been to the drunken fest which is the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Only been to one NASCAR race at the Raceway, was my first and probably my last NASCAR race.  Just didn't relate to it.

Only been to the Fiesta Bowl when Ohio State has been in it.

When the Coyotes move to a more central location, I probably will attend a few games here and there.

I go to more spring training games than anything...not this year, of course.
I go to a handful of DBacks games.  No real interest in the Cards or Suns.  Had fun at the drag racing once, no interest in NASCAR or hockey, but I'd go to a hockey game.
ASU got Florida's QB from last year in the portal, so wearing my Florida cap will make SOME sense this fall.

I'm sure I've posted this before, but I've probably spent 60 days of my life in the Phoenix market but have never set foot in downtown Phoenix.  I've only been there for Fall League Baseball (really underrated if you like baseball), ASU game/wedding in Oct, Fiesta Bowls and many trips to Cactus Leagues games.

I keep forgetting about the Fall baseball league, mostly because once football season rolls around baseball for me is out of sight, out of mind. But it does go to show what a unique sports market PHX is. It’s a rather uncommitted, big event market that acts like an expansive buffet rather than a restaurant focused on hyping a particular cuisine.

You go to a Diamondbacks game and half the fans are there to see the opponent they grew up with, like the Cubs or the Phillies, and not enough of the Diamondbacks fans have deep enough roots in Phoenix to rally the way someone from Wisconsin is born into living and dying for the Packers. And it doesn’t help that part of the reason Phoenix’s pro teams don’t have a lot of native support is that the Phoenix pro teams don’t offer their area fans consistent quality.

I should probably root for the Glendale Desert Dogs since two of their big league affiliations – the Astros and Cardinals – are the two clubs from my adolescence of middle school in Texas and high school near St. Louis.

When the Braves first moved to Atlanta, it was pretty common that opposing fans would be more prevalent than Braves fans.  It took 20 years, and some success, for Atlantans to become Braves fans, and then with WTBS you had folks from Idaho rooting for them even when they were awful.

And they were awful for a time, and then went worst to first.  Now they are toast of the town.

Indeed, it was a clever move that looked rather silly at the time.  We could barely get Channel 19 on our TV, it was very grainy, UHF and all that.  The signal got better pretty soon after that as I recall.  Then cable happened, maybe before he bought the Braves.  Cable would have been a godsend in remote portions of the country.

Ted Turner's daughter lived in our building.  I've seen her unit.  It is interestingly decorated.

Tennessee's losing a few seats with their jumbotron installation.  It's weird that Neyland is now only 5th in capacity.

Texas recently remodeled the South Endzone, and reduced capacity in a shift away from general grandstands, and more toward luxury suites, loges, "experience terraces" and other stuff aimed at generating more revenue despite lower capacity.  Pretty common trend in stadiums these days, as administrators deal with declining attendance across all of college football.

Sept 10: Mississippi St @ Arizona
Sept 24: Toledo @ San Diego State
Oct 8: Washington @ Arizona State
Oct 29: Arkansas @ Auburn
Nov 12 TCU @ Texas

Going to use this thread as my own way of tallying total costs of attending college football games this year. Will include the bigger line item charges such as tickets, air fare, car rental, hotels. Will NOT include costs for beer bought for tailgates, meals, stadium concessions, etc. Depending on how many games I usually attend yearly (5 to 7) I’m guessing I spend $4k - $6k.

Yesterday bought 2 tickets to Toledo @ SD St for a total of $175. To answer how tix to a game between the MAC and MWC can cost over $80 a ticket, San Diego St upped their tickets prices by because of their newly constructed stadium (see below), which doubly serves the purpose of lowering the supply of seats.

Total Spent so far: $175

Never attended the games again or never tallied the total again?

My dad, brother, and I traveled to every (at the time 11, then 12, then 14) B1G stadium to watch the Buckeyes. I'm sure if I added it up the costs would be staggering but dad isn't around anymore so the memories are priceless.

Heh, never tallied it again.  I had season tix for about 25 years counting my student years.  Finally let them go 4 or 5 seasons ago.

And no doubt the time spent with your dad is priceless.  No way to account for that financially.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - United Airlines is adding more flights to help college football fans travel this upcoming season.

United Airlines is adding direct flights from Lincoln to Detroit, Michigan ahead of Nebraska playing at Michigan on Nov. 12, as well as flying bigger planes from Lincoln to Iowa ahead of the Huskers playing Iowa on Nov. 25.

A round-trip flight from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Lincoln is being added on Sept. 16 when the Huskers take on University of Oklahoma on Sept. 17 at Memorial Stadium.

Huskers will have their season opener with Northwestern at the Aer Lingus Classic in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday, Aug. 27.

The airline is adding more than 120 flights for more than 45 of the season’s biggest games and using larger aircrafts to help more fans get in on the action.

According to a recent survey of the airline’s loyalty customers, more than 80 percent of avid college football fans are likely to fly to see a game this season.

If you click on a team's schedule on ESPN, after date, opponent, time, and TV they list a link for "tickets available from". Ie, this is basically for the worst possible ticket in the stadium. For tOSU this year:

Northwestern seems strangely high and Wisconsin strangely low but other than that it is about what you would expect.

Beggars can't be choosers.  Simple solution was to have season tickets wherever you liked, but you're too cheap for that, so just go git r done.

With rising airfare/hotel costs cutting into my willingness to travel, we’ll see how many of the below plans I go through with:

...

Nov 12 TCU @ Texas – finally the long awaited Longhorns home game; unfortunately, they might already be a middling team this late into the season, as the Horns were last year

Likely no long awaited Texas Longhorns trip. Work stuck me on a November project, but there might still be hope if I go anyways.

I tried moving my trip to the Longhorns' mid-October game Vs Iowa State, but with Austin City Limits going full swing that weekend, airfare is astronomical, even for flights into San Antonio. And forget hotels. Austin's amenities weren't even this pricey when I went to last October's F1 Race.

Still it's a big bucket list item to knock off a game in Austin; for as many college football games as I've attended, and for someone who spent part of childhood in Texas, I'm deficient on games in Texas.

If both teams have reasonably decent records at that point, then TCU@Texas should be a fun atmosphere.

Well, looks like a buddy has extra tickets so I'll be going to the Texas-Alabama game. I'm expecting a blowout but it should be a fun atmosphere for the first 10 or 15 minutes.

wondering if the guy that gave Texas that lone #1 vote has money on the Horns vs Bama

Probably not since that was a misprint.  There were 66 #1 votes listed on that poll.  There are 65 coaches that vote in the poll.

Nice to see you here. Say hello to IB.

I know.  We suck for not posting in forever.  I need to make it a point to frequent here more often as I always enjoyed the discussions, just so damn busy with work and 2 kids in youth sports (those won't last forever) and in the summer time enjoying the hell out of our pool :-)

I gather from a reply in the thread you've relocated to FL now?

Yep, we moved down here very early in the Covid lockdowns and never went back. So about 2.5 years now, I guess.

I imagine a lot of folks bet on Texas over Bama with points.

I don't know the spread, I presume it's 20ish, I'd bet on Texas myself if I had to bet.

Going to use this thread as my own way of tallying total costs of attending college football games this year.

Total Spent so far: $454

October 8 plans for Washington @ Arizona State are set:

40 yd line tix: $125

Rental Car – driving from California to Arizona for the weekend: $372

Previous trips + Tempe trip $454 + $497

Total Spent so far: $951

Previous trips + Tempe trip $454 + $497

Total Spent so far: $951

To include three additional trips since early October:

4. Auburn Vs Arkansas:

Tix: $0 thanks to an Auburn booster hosting me to her tailgate every year

Airfare to/from Atlanta: $350; Rental Car: $235; Hotel: $0 (used Hilton Honors points)

5. Arizona Vs Arizona State (Territorial Cup):

Tix: $40 – already crashing in Tucson for Thanksgiving

6. Las Vegas Bowl Florida Vs Oregon State (upcoming):

Tix: $225; Hotel: $0 (using Hilton Honors points)

Total Spent + Auburn Trip + Territorial Cup + Las Vegas Bowl

$951 + $585 + $40 + $225 = $1801

There you have it. A total cost of $1800 is not nearly as much as I expected.

Even gas and concessions is included it’s less than $2200. That's about as much as I totaled in a single weekend last year hosting a trip to Ames for the Iowa-Iowa State rivalry.
