Title: Wanted some help on all-time teams
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on May 21, 2022, 11:34:59 PM
Now, for this exercise, there's no pleasing everyone.  I know this.  But I'm making all-time teams for Whoa Nellie.
I wanted to post who I've put on these teams and my question for fans of these programs is:  HAVE I LEFT ANYONE OFF WHO MUST BE ON THE TEAM?

Not nitpicking between similar RBs, not going by NFL fame, etc.
Just tell me if I left someone off who 80% of fans of that team would insist should be on it.
Thanks.
.
Nebraska:
IBs - Rozier, Green, Phillips
WR/TEs - Morgan Jr, Bell, Rodgers, Fryar, J.Miller (TE), Anderson
.
UM
RBs - Wheatley, Thomas, Harmon, Hart
WR/TEs - Howard, Carter, Edwards, Mandich (TE), Manningham, Clancy (TE)
.
ND
RBs - Denson, Pinkett, Ferguson, Gipp
WR/TEs - Floyd, Tate, Gatewood, Brown, Eifert (TE), MacAfee (TE)
.
OU
RBs - S.Owens, Peterson, Washington, Sims
WR/TEs - Broyles, Clayton, Lamb, Hinton, Jackson (TE), T.Owens
.
OSU
RBs - Griffin, George, Cassady, QB
WR/TEs - Hill, Boston, Carter, Jenkins, Holmes, Galloway
.
I don't want these skill position guys to all be from the past 20 years.  I'm trying for variety while still getting the best guys in there.

not going to argue with Nebraska

Frosty Anderson??

80% of the fans today don't remember Frosty

Heck, they don't know Junior Miller or Johnny Mitchell

They'll take Frosty over the 25 guys with better stats but didn't stand out in such big-passing offenses.

I don't think I meant to do 2 TEs for ND....may sub in Rocket Ismail for Eifert.

I might take Calvin Jones over Green and maybe Johnny Mitchell at TE, but can't really say you're off on that group at all.

Yeah, Jones had better career numbers than Phillips, especially, but I feel like he's not held in as high regard (on the field).  I remember him and Derek Brown both doing big-time damage on defenses, though.
Mitchell was the other TE I thought about, but my customers probably prefer Junior.

I've got the big 10 helmet all-time teams done.  Working on the next 10 - Tenn, Fla, FSU, Miami, Aub, LSU,....ehh erm.....Iowa?  Warshingon?  Oregon?  Arkansas?
.
Hmmph.

I feel like everyone and their mothers could agree on the top 16 programs of all time are, in whatever order, but after those top 16......ick.  Clemson?  BYU?  UCLA?  There's definitely a drop-off after the top 16.  I don't think I previously realized that.

Anyway, on Tennessee.....it's tricky.  A few guys are left off because the played so far back and there aren't stats for them.  And then a lot of the name guys don't earn their way on.....no Jamal Lewis, no Alvin Harper or Carl Pickens.  No Willie Gault, even at returner.  And then at TE, Witten actually has crap stats, but he's kind of the choice by default.

No Dale Carter.  None of the Colquitts at punter.
.
It's lame, I guess.
.
The best thing UT has going for it is 3 guys who had 30+ sacks:  Reggie White, Derek Barnett, and Doug Atkins.  This has the highest sack rating of any team so far.

Guessing Peerless Price is there.

Going back to N. The reason I think Calvin Jones over Green, he was A. Faster B. My recall is high avg per carry. No doubt shared load with Brown.

Green isn't even on the chopping block - Phillips is.  Green's yards, ypc, and TDs are all appreciably better than Phillips'.

I'd take Green over Phillips, but most Husker fans are enamored with Phillips for some reason

I just wish Green would have come back for his senior season to set many career records''

didn't care much about Phillips coming back

If you really want old school, there is Chic Harley, the player that basically saved Ohio State Football.  Ohio State use to be referred to as "The House that Chic built"

The man who lead Ohio State's first victory over TTUN

I'm all for including the old-timey guys, but the stats just aren't there.  I wish college football people cared as much about stats as baseball fellows did back then.

Doesn't help that a typical QB line was 4-11-89-1-1.
Title: Re: Wanted some help on all-time teams
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on May 24, 2022, 11:02:22 PM
Yeah, but generally, it's a sliding scale of comp% and yards per attempt.  That's acceptable, if not preferable.

But in many cases, it's that the stats simply don't exist.  That's what bothers me.  Tennessee had a badass RB back in like 1939 and in every blurb about him, it says he STILL has the all-time rushing TDs mark for the Vols.  That's amazing!  But are there ANY sources with number of carries?  Yardage?  No.  Not on stat sites, not in UT's media guide, nowhere.

For ND, I simply cannot include Ismail in their receiving group, but I'm replacing Eifert with Jim Seymour.
With all things equal, I'm including a variety of eras.

No you're right.  Washington misses the list, it's just when that dude was hot he was unstoppable.  He didn't get hot that often.  .... but when he did...

Doesn't help that a typical QB line was 4-11-89-1-1.

Which is why passer rating is awful, it very much overvalues completion percentage at the expense of ypa, not translating to an era (particularly in the NFL) when guys complete passes at an unfathomable rate to past generations.

I think Kirk Cousins is top 10 all-time in NFL passer rating, lol

He's in the group of players like Lawrence Phillips in my mind that just seemed like grown men on the field.  Other guys that come to mind like that were OU TE Gresham, USC S Taylor Mays, OU RB Adrian Peterson, UF LB Javon Kearse, etc.  Whether they were merely very good or all-time great, they just looked fully-developed compared to everyone else.

The top 4 FSU QBs All-Time, chosen by me, all have surnames beginning with W.
Ward
Winston
Weinke
Weldon
.
On another note, does anyone have anything to share about Gary Huff?  Early 70s FSU QB.

yeah, I'm going to have to just go off my eye test....Adrian Peterson is one of the very greatest RB's to ever touch a football.

that's what happens when you play for 17 years and stay relatively healthy lol. Crazy thing about Frank Gore is he didn't get to play much even though he was the best RB on the roster at Miami bc he tore his ACL twice in college. To have the long successful NFL career he did after that....kinda nuts.

I presume these passing yards include the 7 yard screen pass a runner breaks for 70, right?

YAC

I liked that stat relating to yards per attempt.

Some reasons no one has ordered '82 OU:
they went 'only' 8-4
their QBs threw 1 TD and 12 INT
neither the offense nor the defense was elite
lost bowl game to ASU
.
I bet if I offer it and post about it, they'll be some takers.

1982 in Lincoln..................

Nebraska wrapped up its second straight Big Eight title and Orange Bowl bid with a fiercely contested, 28-24 win over Oklahoma before its 124th consecutive sellout and a national television audience — but not until defensive end Scott Strasburger’s interception in the final half-minute left killed a last-gasp Sooner effort.

The Huskers trailed, 10-7, early in the second period but put together seven-play touchdown drives of 78 and 62 yards capped by 2- and 14-yard runs by fullback Doug Wilkening to take a 21-10 halftime lead.

OU and freshman sensation Marcus Dupree weren’t finished, though, as Dupree accounted for more than half of his game-high 149 rushing yards when he sprinted 86 yards to score on the third play of the second half, bringing the Sooners within 21-17.

The teams traded long TD drives in the third quarter, then the Sooners were stymied twice inside the Husker 35 in the final period before Strasburger’s interception sealed their fate.

H’MAX NOTES: Strasburger intercepted the ball at the Oklahoma 23 and returned it to the OU 1 with 26 seconds remaining. Fans rushed the field, resulting in a 15-yard penalty against Nebraska. See video. … The goalposts came down, and a number of people were injured in the chaos, including four who were treated at Lincoln General Hospital. … During the third quarter, a UNL police sergeant was taken to the hospital after being struck in the back of the neck by a frozen orange.

Hey @Cincydawg (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=870) I put Leonard Pope at TE for the UGA All-Time team.  Out of Shannon Mitchell, Clarence Kay, Ben Watson.....or the new guy from this year, who would you pick?

I experienced some compelling evidence for my hatred of UGA.....prepping my first order of all 16 all-time teams, everything is done, I'm ready to put it all in the shipping envelope, but I count them up to be safe......15 teams.  15?!?  Seriously??
I lay them all out - who am I missing?  Who am I missing??  Georgia!!!  Okay, okay, I'll print them out real quick.......no all-time UGA file.
.
I HADN'T EVEN CREATED THE TEAM.
Talk about deep-seeded.

I don't "hate" Florida, they aren't worth such passion.  I have a strong dislike for Eastern Michigan though.
