Jimbo Fisher delivered a fiery rebuttal to Alabama football coach Nick Saban's comments from Wednesday night that Texas A&M "bought every player" in its vaunted 2022 recruiting class, calling Saban's comments "despicable" numerous times in a quickly assembled 9½-minute news conference.
Fisher, who was visibly angry, said there was no truth to Saban's accusations.
"We never bought anybody," the Texas A&M coach said. "No rules are broken. Nothing was done wrong. It's a shame that you've got to sit here and defend 17-year-old kids and families and Texas A&M. Because we do things right. We're always going to do things right. We're always going to be here. We're doing a heck of a job."
Fisher seethed, obviously taking Saban's comments personally. And while he didn't name Saban, Fisher's response was similarly personal.
"It's despicable that a reputable head coach can come out and say this when he doesn't get his way," Fisher said. "The narcissist in him doesn't allow those things to happen. It's ridiculous when he's not on top."
Texas A&M signed five five-star prospects in the 2022 ESPN300, with 20 of them ranked in the top 150. The class is widely considered the top-rated group in the modern era of recruiting rankings. Fisher, who served as Saban's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at LSU from 2000 to 2004, cast accusations of his own against Saban.
"Some people think they're God," Fisher said. "Go dig into how God did his deal. You may find out ... a lot of things you don't want to know. We build him up to be the czar of football. Go dig into his past, or anybody's that's ever coached with him. You can find out anything you want to find out, what he does and how he does it. It's despicable."
Saban said Wednesday night that Alabama players made $3 million "doing it the right way" last year and that only 25 players were able to leverage name, image and likeness opportunities.

Remember, NIL was forced. On the ncaa by certain states. California led the way as I recall. They didn’t want to do it, but state law trumps ncaa rules.
My guess is that Saban/Alabama can’t compete in the new age of NIL, so he threw the players/programs that can under the bus.

Saban looks so petty and childishly vindictive in all of this. Trying to accuse the one other SEC who beat Alabama on the field and on the recruiting trial of cheating (even though Bama was in an arms race to pay Pitt transfer Jordan Addison) is all in bad faith. And good for Jimbo for taking Saban’s low blows as a chance to publicly push back. Saban deserves the PR heat.

I look at this whole thing differently.
Saban mastered a certain situation, and just like any powerful entity, wants the status quo to remain.
NIL turned things on it's head.
But Saban used very specific wording: "I don't know if we'll be able to sustain that in the future..." This is in regards to his program's not doing what he's saying A&M's program did. That means he still got the 2nd-best class in the country without stooping to whatever tactics he's accusing A&M of doing. So imagine next year when Alabama starts cranking it up and doing what the Aggies are doing.

I'm afraid that A&M did something akin to wearing headgear in a boxing match and Alabama knocked everyone else out while not wearing headgear. Saban is shrugging here and saying, "okay, I guess we'll wear headgear, too" and they're going to dominate even more than they previously have.

The old 25-man scholarship limit rule per football recruiting cycle has been tossed to the curb for at least the next two years by the Division I Council, and Husker assistant coach Bill Busch is like many in the profession who sees that as beneficial.
"The one thing they finally started to figure out a little bit is where you end the ridiculous 25 initials (scholarships)," Busch was saying this week during an interview with Husker247 about an array of recruiting topics and stories. "You have 85 and that's your number. If you have to sign 40, you can sign 40, but you're still at 85. That's even for everybody. That's an even playground. That's why a lot of schools would get upside down and they could never get back to their 85 and it was like they were always on probation. Because they would be 34 under and they only had 25 to sign, so now it's like you're under probation."
Chris Hummer of 247Sports did a deep dive on this topic this week laying out the main impact points of this rule change, which previously kept your limit to 25 scholarship players you could bring in each cycle. Hummer offered up Kansas as one of the most extreme examples of a program that was absolutely buried by the 25-class limit, with KU down to 39 scholarship players in 2014 and still having never reached 85 from that point to this day under Lance Leipold.

Saban committed a cardinal sin; he told the truth. Everybody from Lane Kiffin to Steve Spurrier to Ivan Masiel to Kirby Smart know it and have spoken or written about it. Does anybody here believe Saban was wrong? I guess it is common practice for a team that hasn't won a NC since 1939 and had an 8-4 record to have the best recruiting class in history.
Also of note is Saban did not accuse anybody of cheating although I believe the toothless NCAA prohibits NIL contracts as recruiting tactics. He accuse A&M of buying their recruiting class which they did.

Well... they kinda just did.
Top limit is still 85, but if a team loses, say, 50 scholarship players to graduation, transfer, early NFL, they can now go out and replace them with 50 the next cycle instead of waiting for the scholarship to expire.
We thought they'd zig with this mess involving the portal and NIL, but I'll be damned if they didn't just zag, doubling down, and centering power on the stakeholders damn near exclusively.

My figuring is st satan has long owned the rulebook, knowing every in and out, and leveraged it for all it was worth. And now the rules have drastically changed and he realizes bama isn't the king anymore, as success and "promise" of millions is trumped by actual millions with a quickness.... and its just simple to realize, bama ain't near as deep as some schools when it comes to support.

Coach Quarless is actually a member of this site though I don't think he's ever logged in.. he has entertaining and enlightening stories of the now heavyweights of coaching and their tactics and strategies. It would be awesome for him to chime in and share his thoughts.

I agree. Which is why I don't understand what his end goal is here. To piss off recruits who might be deciding between the long term payoff of going to Alabama vs. the short term payoff of getting that NIL at Texas A&M?
