Title: There's a little black spot on the sun today....
Post by: grillrat on August 21, 2017, 01:20:08 PM

Same old thing as 2024.   ;)

Stay safe out there.

The whole world's come undone, starin' up at the sun.

i stand in awe of the people capable of performing the mathematical madness that predicted and modeled the eclipse.

seriously.

i would be much more likely to believe some stranger off the street telling me "I was visited by an apparition last night who told me the moon was gonna....." than I would another stating "you see, I've performed the calculations and.... ".

i was in the 93% range... it is amazing how much light a sliver still casts.  never looked worse than it would if a storm was rolling in near twilight... other than that.... no big deal.

Me and some friends drove about 1 1/2 hours to see the total. A little further than we needed to, but didn't want to be part of the big crowds. Was about 100 people at the rec area we went to. A lady had a notebook and was having people sign where they were from. Was amazed at far people drove to get to BFE Nebraska.

I have a friend that drove up to Nebraska from Central Texas.  Texted me about how awesome it was a couple hours afterward.

I would love to have gone but it wasn't to be.  But in 2024 I'll be able to watch a total solar eclipse whilst floating in my swimming pool in my backyard.

We had a mix of sun and clouds in Indy, about 92% eclipse.  That star sure is a bright mfer.   I enjoyed the almost tinted dusk like feel to the light amongst the buildings downtown.   I guess it too is right in our wheelhouse in seven years.

me and the fam drove 4 hours to nashville to watch. very happy we did. kids were in awe, as was i. we also stopped by the rocket rest stop in huntsville on our way into nashville. it's just a saturn 1b, but still huge and very fun for the kids. my 3yo fell in love. can't wait to take him to the space and rocket center in huntsville.

I recently made a couple of trips to Biloxi passing by the rocket rest stop. I have it on my list to make a visit to the space in rocket center in Huntsville on one of my trips in that direction. If you do make it there in the near future, please post your impressions.

I flew from Phoenix to Denver, met up with my pops, aunt and uncle who also flew in, and rented a car that we drove to Laramie where we happen to have some family. From Laramie we drove towards Casper but found a nice spot off the road a bit south of Casper were we experienced about 79 seconds of totality. Let me tell you, words fall way short of being able to describe what I saw and the overall experience. Seeing a 360° sunset with ambient light similar to that of twilight but in the middle of the day was something else.

10/10, would do again.

You still have any family in Texico?  For the 2024 eclipse, FW is on the western edge of the path of totality, and Dallas is pretty close to the center line.

My dad still lives in Ft Worth but within a year or so he hopes to move to AZ where all of his kids and grandkids live.

Regardless, a trip to Texico for the 2024 eclipse is already on the agenda.

i used to go to the space camp as a kid. i haven't been since i was about 12, but it was amazing for a kid.

unless they've changed it quite a bit, it's really good. they have both the shuttle with boosters and exo tank and a saturn v full size models. they also have a saturn v broken down into sections and laying horizontal. plus 27 other rockets/missles on display.

there are a few 'simulator' rides, basically theme park rides. good for a little thrill.

inside they have several models of various space craft, most of which are hand on/climb in. they have an ISS area as well. plus all the history you can ask for.

i can't imagine what the new technology with tv/video has allowed them to add.

if your planning on going, i'd treat as a theme park day for a full day of activities/sight seeing. i'm not sure a 2 hour stop would do it justice.

We got 94% here in Raleigh.  The view through the shadow of the trees was coolest.  You could watch the crescent shapes moving in an annular pattern as time passed.  We did get dim, which was kinda neat and all but nothing close to darkness.

Thanks for the info. I may have to do that in the near future. My son is in the Air Force at Keesler AFB in Biloxi but is going to be stationed at Tyndall AFB in Panama City. From what I can tell, the best way to get there still takes me down I-65 passing right by Huntsville. I'm sure we will be visiting him once we start seeing snow flakes here up north.
