We did, and it's a nice OS exercise.  And not that easy beyond some obvious ones.

QB - Aaron Murray I think.
RB - Nick Chubb
RB2 - Todd Gurley
WR - AJ Green
WR - George Pickens
TE - Bowers (I am amazed with this player)

Defensive players, I could just take the 2021 team, maybe sub in David Pollack and Greg Blue (safety).

Is this just favorites, or actually best?

Because I think you gotta put Kendricks at No. 1. You also gotta put Garrett Graham in ahead of Ferguson. (Jacob Pedersen is kinda borderline, as he was a very good receiver, but maybe not as much a blocker)

WR: Lee Evans, jared Abbrederis

HM: Nick Toon, Brandon Williams, Chris Chambers, Quintez Cephus, maybe Lee DeRamus?

I thought about Graham. I will add him into the HM on my post.

DeRamus for sure. I'll also add Jonathon Orr. How about Donald Hayes and Errickson?

I'm definitely in on the first two, and probably Orr.

Orr was so weird. Awesome numbers as a freshman for a kinda so-so offense given the play-makers. Then 294 yards in those middle years, 20 total catches. Then Stocco ascends and a nice 688 as the No. 2 WR to close out.

Skipped Orr and Hayes, but added Luke Swan.

Solid one. Very small window of contributing, but quite strong.

I think we've hashed out Cephus vs. Abby, but just an agree to disagree spot there.

so 30 years would be 1991 to 2021?

I’ll go….

QB - Drew Henson
RB - Tyrone Wheatley
RB - Mike Hart
WR - Braylon Edwards
WR - Desmond Howard
WR - David Terrell
TE  - Jake Butt
LT - Jake Long
LG - Steve Hutchinson
C - David Baas
RG - Jon Jansen
RT - Jeff Backus

DL - Aidan Hutchinson
DL - LaMarr Woolley
DL - Brandon Graham
DL -  Glen Steele
LB - Jarrett Irons
LB - Devin Bush
LB - David Harris
CB - Charles Woodson
CB - Ty Law
NB - Marlin Jackson
S -  Ernest Shazor
S - Dax Hill

that pass rush and secondary is filthy. Hutchinson, Woodley, and Graham all elite pass rushers. Not sure teams would even be able to complete a pass on Woodson & Law with Marlin Jackson as your 3rd corner lol.

That OL and WR crew real nice too. Big time twin towers with Braylon & DT and Desmond Howard in the slot to carve everyone to pieces. That OL would open holes you could drive a truck through. Wheatley got that 4.3 speed in a 230 pound body and Hart just the jack of all trades do it all who can move the chains and has a nose for the end zone.

That sounds a bit like your comparison of UM and UGA in their bowl game.  Of course, in any hypothetical, they'd be up against all stars from another program.

So, maybe that other team could pass and run a bit too.

I think if you took an all time offense from an Ohio State or USC or Texas, you'd probably have a pretty good quarterback on said team.

And some good WRs as well.

I went most talented, not best numbers or best overall career. Henson was an adonis that would've been the #1 overall pick had he just stuck to football. That one year he started- he was phenomenal

Michigan played a ball control pro style offense- none of their QB's were putting up big #'s back in the 80s, 90s, or 2000s. You clearly never watched the guy play if you didn't think he was phenomenal. I want to say he completed 62% for 18 TD's vs 4 INT's and ran for 3-4 more TD's in 9 games his final year at Michigan. He was 6'4, 230 with a ridiculous arm and ran 4.6's. Dude was closest thing to Elway college football had seen since Elway.

The All Star team from 30 years is going to look awesome on either side of the ball for any major program.  I'm sure they would all vanquish "Vandy", but in this hypothetical, they should be compared, to the extent possible, with other All Star teams.  Sure, the defense is going to look incredible, but it would be facing incredible offenses, with folks by Vince Young or Joe Burrough leading them.  It stands to reason such an offense would find ways to score, maybe even more than 11 points.

A few thoughts on the last batch of UW people

Strong agrees (from the new stuff): Martin, a damn truck from a strong group. When Bill Rentmeester is squeezed out, that's impressive.
Guards are good

Modest disagreement, but probably a matter of taste:
We went over the Cephus-Abby stuff
I would put Wagner over Ryan Ramczyk. I think Ramczyk was a better pass blocker, but I think Wagner was just mean as all hell in the run game. The fact Ramczyk played one year, and it's probably the worst UW running season of the modern era, I'd dock him for that, but it's a perfectly good choice (Carimi gets docked for his NFL work, unfairly, though his work before his last year was only just OK)

Main disagree
I love Owen Daniels, but he's not the best TE they've had in this era (he was quite good). Lance Kendricks is No. 1. Just a hellacious blocker, super mobile, and an explosive receiver. I think Fum was the best overall pure receiver at the position, while Backum was the most explosive.

In the 30 years since Kent Graham it is difficult to come up with many QBs that were worse. Steve Bellisari? Justin Zwick? Joe Bauserman?

I can tell you little about the man other than he was a senior that year. And he was on Ohio State, which was just 8-4.

There will probably be fewer moving forward, with the 3/4 and the NG playing only 1/2 of the snaps in favor of a 5th DB.

92-21

offense - 11 personnel set

qb - mac jones - tua and young both got heavy consideration, and after next season young might take over, but mac was so efficient. tua injuries put me off him. that's my 3 deep, though. mac, young, tua.

rb - najee harris - shaun alexander, ingram, trent, and henry all got major consideration, but imo, najee is best all around bama back ever. alexander and henry would fill out the 3 deep.

te - oj howard - fairly easy pick here.

wr - smitty - this is gonna be tough to narrow down to just 3 wr's. but smitty was best of them all, so he's #1.

wr - julio - most freakish and would have loved to see him in a modern style offense.

wr - waddle - needed an electric, shifty type to complement the big target and speed options. cooper, ridley, jeudy, david palmer, prothro, freddie milons, and antonio carter were all considered. to get a 2 deep, for 6 wr rotation, i'd go with 3 above, plus cooper, juedy, and palmer.

lt - chris samuels - lot of good players here, but samuels was probably the best from this time frame. back up would be jonah williams.

lg - chance warmack - best guard for bama ever maybe. backup evan mathis.

c - ryan kelley - had tough choice between him and either dickerson or caldwell. all were really good. but kelley did it over multiple seasons and maybe a bit of recency bias. those other 2 is pickem for backup, though i lean dickerson.

rg - barrett jones - probably the most decorated bama player ever, one of cfb top decorated players ever. dude had a ridiculous career. also provides a ton of versatility, being all sec at guard twice and center his sr year. also started at tackle one season. backup is mike johnson

rt - fluker - just a huge mauler that was good in pass pro too. backup andre smith.

defense - 3-4 base

de - john copeland - one of the bookend de's on the 92 team, copeland was consensus aa. backup is ashawn robinson.

dt - marcel dareus - dude was a freak up the middle. back up daron payne, with heavy rotation. gonna get really good pass rush up middle with those 2, and not much if any run stopping ability lost either.

de - jonathan allen - mix between dt/de, just could play. eric curry, the other half of the 92 bookends, is backup.

sam lb - hightower - underrated lb for bama fans, one of my favorites. back up, keith mccants.

mike lb - cj mosley - dude could take your head off and still cover the pass. back up rueben foster.

will lb - demeco ryans - one of the few bright spots from pre-saban 00's, guy was a stud. back up, rolando mclain.

jack lb - will anderson - easiest pick on the list. broke/set ncaa records last season, hopefully just adds to that this year. will go down as top 2-3 lb/de's in bama history, right next to derrick thomas (who just missed this list by couple years). back up saleem rasheed or derrick pope. or mack wilson.

cb - antonio langham - all world cb from 92 team. backup dre kirkpatrick.

fs - minkah - can play anywhere along back line, but fs was my fav position for him. back up george teague.

ss - roman harper - another rare bright spot pre-saban 00s. back up mark barron, hootie jones, or landon collins.

cb - dee milliner. could go with dre kirk here, but i like dee. backup marlon humphrey.

star - eddie jackson - when needing to go to a nickle d. back up javier arenas.

p - jk scott.

k - reichard.

kr/pr - arenas and/or prothro. backup, freddie milons and/or kenyon drake.

Interesting. I’d probably have them both over James, just because his dominance was so short.

Schofield is a guy who wouldn’t stand out at top two, but shout out to him. Hard worker and nice kid. Shame that knee limited his career.

That'd be a good team.

Weisman worked out at the gym I used to go to, before it got locked down for Covid.

Good guy.

Cool, Weisman was always one of my favorite players.  He started out at FB and got converted to Halfback due to injuries to Iowa's other RB's.  Then ended up starting at HB for 3 years.

When Weisman was healthy he could actually show some surprising speed bursting through a hole,  and was pretty dependable at always picking up that extra yard needed for that first down.  He must have incredible strength I am guessing even still today when he works out at the gym.  Too bad he  always got worn down by the end of season but he legit was Iowa's best option at RB at that time.

His final stats were not too shabby either.  2602 yards total, 4.3 ypc.  32 TD's

Definitely a beast in the gym, and did not skip leg days.

airbhg liked him cause he wasn't really a rb, but a fb in disguise.

It's amazing to think about. The Angry Iowa Running Back Hating God (AIRBHG) cursed many a RB over the years.

Just leading up to the game when Weisman finally took over as starter in early 2012,  the previous starters and back-ups from 2010-2012 left because

One guy got his girlfriend pregnant and dropped out as a sophomore.
One guy got a career ending ACL injury as a sophomore
One guy failed a drug test and had academic problems and transferred as a sophomore
One guy got accused of rape, the girl ended up dropping the charges, but his career at Iowa was still over, and he transferred out as a sophomore.
Another guy had frequent injuries but finally made it back to starting in 2015
Another guy had academic problems and transferred after his freshman year.

This would be a fruitful exercise of program strength/depth through the eras to do a 5th-team all-time team.
It would be a big job, actually mapping out your top 4 teams of all-time first, then who is next one up?
.
I think the QB quality across programs would vary wildly.  Some school's 5th-best were all-american caliber guys and other's were Joe Schmoe.
.
Plus, they wouldn't all be super-teams.  That's a prediction, but I think we'd be surprised how weak the 5th-best-DE pair-ever winds up being for some programs.

This is kinda why I'm listing honorable mentions. Probably gonna stop at third team.
