Title: Does size matter?
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on April 10, 2022, 11:20:50 PM
I was looking at what Dabo said about 40-50 programs separating into its own level of football and it made me wonder about school size.
We know about football success/history/results mattering a lot.
We know academics matter to varying degrees from conference to conference.
But what about school size?
.
Some nuggets:
Certain schools are looked down upon as tiny private schools....Wake Forest is the smallest among all P5 programs.  But among others in the bottom 10 are Notre Dame, Boston College, and Miami.
.
The B1G is BIG - only 2 schools have under 30K students and 4 have over 50K.
.
UCF....newly-added member to the...distressed Big 12...has 69K students (about the same as Ohio State and Texas A&M- most in the country).
.
The ACC's largest school (Florida State) would only be the 12-largest in the B1G.
.
The Big 12's four new members now comprise 4 of it's top 5 schools by size (only Texas Tech is as large).
.
Looking at the recent, most-successful program sizes:  Alabama 39K, Clemson 25K, OSU 68K, OU 29K.
.
Looking at the perpetual cellar-dwellers' sizes:  Vandy 13K, Duke 16K, Rutgers 50K, Kansas 28K, Oregon St & Wazzou both 31K.
.
What do you guys think?  Does it come into play at all for any of the decision-makers to include or exclude a school based on its size?

Northwestern and Stanford are pretty small and both have had success. I really don't think it matters.

For conference expansion I think it does matter but indirectly. What I think the decision makers care about there is not size of enrollment but size of fanbase.

Those two are obviously related but they are NOT one and the same.

For example, I know a lot of Ohio State fans in Ohio who either didn't go to college or went to one of Ohio's six MAC Schools or another school.

Obviously, the correlation is pretty weak here, but there is one to a smaller degree.

Size doesn't matter, but it doesn't hurt to be able to throw out a few high-end sports cars to compensate.  :67:
