The interesting thing, to me, is how few of these programs are still in the hunt, year in and out.  We could include PSU, Oklahoma, along with Bama/UGA and perhaps Michigan.  Ohio State is not to be found.  I suppose it's a sign that a period of excellence can turn into a disaster, or mediocrity, fairly often.

If we go back further, it gets more interesting, perhaps.  Many of these NCs were won by Blue Bloods, even if they have faded some today.  We have a Syracuse, Michigan State twice, Pitt, Minny and Ole Miss, Arky,  and the rest are BBs.  Whatever fun one can have with the NCs claimed by Bama, they do show up rather consistently.

AP and coaches polls are the ones I acknowledge during this period.  BCS automatically received the coaches' #1 vote which is what legitimized it.

1979 is a year when it would have been difficult to pick the field even for an 8-team playoff.  In the pre-bowl poll:

Texas was #11 and had great wins over #5 OU and #8 Houston but they also lost to #6 Arkansas and to a mediocre aTm team.

As it turned out:
