Title: 2022 Michigan State Offseason Thread
Post by: ELA on January 04, 2022, 12:20:38 PM
Speedy Nailor announces he will not take advantage of the free COVID year to return for a 6th season.  Not a bad last memory with the one handed catch and run in the Peach Bowl.

He went out in the first half of the Michigan game, so we had the comeback against Michigan, and our final 4 games without him, until the Peach Bowl, so if Reed comes back, I still feel ok.

And Reed confirmed he will be back.  Kind of surprised by that one

Also, on the coaching side:

Florida hired our RB coach away, as TE coach and director of recruiting.  MSU replaced him by bringing back Effraim Reed, who was an analyst in 2020, but left to be RB coach at Georgia Southern.

USC tired to poach the OL coach, but MSU apparently used the increased assistant pool to retain him

LT Jarrett Horst announces he is taking advantage of the free COVID year to come back to MSU.  Much needed, OL was looking really, really young next year.  Probably still need to find at least 1, possibly two transfers.  We saw how the OL looked in the Peach Bowl missing three starters (including Horst), and that's about what the starting five would have been going into next year

Way too early projection.....how many wins would you guess MSU is good for next year?

Well, considering I said 4-8 this year, I'm perhaps not the best judge.

The schedule certainly gets harder.  We got 2 of the big 3 in the East at home last year, so that flips to 2 of 3 on the road next year, with the one home being against OSU, which I would say we are an underdog, no matter where it is played.  While home field probably swings who is favored against UM/PSU.

Then our big OOC opponent goes from @Miami to @Washington.  On paper, pretty even, but that environment in Miami was a neutral crowd at best.  There were A LOT of MSU fans there, and not a ton of home fans.  Seattle is a tougher venue, and Big Ten teams historically struggle with those Pac 12 road games.

Then for crossover opponents, we flip Purdue, Nebraska, Northwestern; for Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois.

I'll say we open 2-0 against WMU and Akron; split the road games at Washington and Illinois (3-1); lose 3 of 4 of OSU, UW, @Michigan, @PSU (4-4); then finish 3-1 against Minnesota, Rutgers, Indiana, @Maryland.

So give me 7-5 right now

Sounds fair, but I'll bet one cfb51.com-buck MSU ends better than that.

MSU hired the DL coach that Von Miller, TJ Watt and Rashan Gary hired to be their private coach for the draft. Maybe a good recruiting move, but seems like if he was a good DL coach, someone would have hired him sooner. Von Miller was like 6 years ago

Well, this means little to anyone outside the MSU sphere, but he was the most trusted, rational, insider, and ducked out to be with his family.  Broke radio silence for this

Sounds like MSU might not play a true spring game due to lack of OL.  None of the 4 signees enrolled early, and apparently only 7 scholarship linemen are actually practicing

Injuries?

Yes, and I think they only had 10 scholarship OL to start with, with the other 4 coming in the fall

4 of MSU's 9 scholarship OL on campus this spring are out with injuries.  Probably good they are not doing a Green-White game

I assume you can get by with walk-ons, though it won't look pretty on TV

Running the drills looked bad enough.  Hopefully local media spins it as the defensive line being ahead of schedule
