Expanding the NC to a playoff
Expanding the playoff to a larger playoff
same result
more SEC vs SEC
more SEC national championships
****This is not an SEC-SEC-SEC thing. I'm not boasting or happy about it. I hate Georgia. I hate Bama. But you wanted it, and this is what happens.
Somehow....."I told you so" doesn't quite cut it.
-
Georgia an early 2.5 point favorite. Hmmmph.
-
You want expansion? Well, this is what you get without expansion. And we should assume it's the same with expansion. Because because. I told you so.
-
This is where the money pinged highest.
Not trying to be a jerk, but UM should have been ranked third.
Cincy won't bring the money to a NCG like any of the other three, and.... Both UGA load literal charter flights and travel.
The committee got what it sought in the beginning- the most financially advantageous match. They fed cincy to bama, and then would settle for either UGA or UM as their opponent. They'd never let the giants (read: $$$) play back to back and miss a chance on likely doubling the take.
An aside is I'm thinking this season may be the last for SEC teams as a NCG lock. The same thing happened before- it always does in the cycle...
Nebraska embarrassed both UF and UT in the nineties. Fans of either were certain they were good enough to compete just like UM was... they were wrong. However, ol Osborne is the root cause by my reckoning for the SEC explosion... the top of the SEC started locking up the perimeter on D disallowing the sweeps and option play that destroyed them when facing Nebraska. That triggered cascade across the SEC with imaginative Ds folks weren't wholly familiar with... the Joe Lee Dunn's of MSU (a 46), the RC Slocum 44 wrecking crew slipping into regular use... 43's bringing a TE proportioned DE while placing damn near LB size safeties with speed of regular safeties.. they ran on D until freakin Meyer showed up with spread options others tried to replicate. HUNH was a thorn as the components of Ds was specific- Satan complained and then joined in the forray himself... its shifting again, now, but I'm thinking it won't be focused on one conference for long, well, unless that conference tries to snatch possible contenders from others..... huh...
The two declining conferences are the PAC and the Big12... the ACC is sliding slower. The movement to HUNH is an equalizer and it'll be curious to see what rules are changed and whether it is to support it or cripple it- I see it as the triple option of this era and equalizer- all 11 D players should be capable to defend every inch of the field- whether power consolidated between tackles or deep post or flag routes breaking on the seam... it makes a roster of 30 talented players equal a roster of 90 3 4 and 5 stars. Small schools can manage that, especially with the portal.
I'll be surprised to see two SEC teams in the playoff next season... I won't be surprised to see at least one in the least.
-
Four teams recruit at a different level. It doesn't always align in a given year. We saw it with Clemson and OSU this year. But whichever of those 4 schools make the playoffs will continue to roll over anyone else.
At least with expansion, we can rebroaden the definition of a good season.
-
I dont care if they are the two best teams I hate rematches
-
I'm pleased. Cfp final tickets have dropped by 100s since halftime of the Orange Bowl. Now I have to figure out where to sit...
-
Same here, but the best 2 teams are the best 2 teams, same as 2011.
But this idea of expanding the playoff = NFL time........just think, if UGA and Bama played in the regular season, we could get a 3rd game between them! Yayyyyy!!!
-
Georgia an early 2.5 point favorite. Hmmmph.
give me Bama and the points all day long. Bryce Young was kind of meh vs Cincinnati. He's not going to play poorly two games in a row.
-
He didn't play poorly, he wasn't really needed.
-
After now seeing Georgia in person it does not surprise me that they open as a slight favorite despite being Handley beaten in their previous matchup.
They’re extremely solid everywhere including their kicking games and coverage teams.
Georgia is a “contain Bryce to Jamison” from winning it all in my opinion.
But to me there is absolutely no doubt that these are the two best teams, and they deserve to play for all the marbles. I actually look forward to seeing this chess match of a football game.
-
He didn't play poorly, he wasn't really needed.
Cincy had him in the blender a bit. Georgia may a want to take note. Certainly, they need to get way more pressure on him than in the first game
-
Isn't there an SEC board on this site?
-
The OP posts like an ornery housewife, with nagging "I told you so!" threads. Lol.
-
I don't know what you guys are talking about. The CFB season ends after the Rose Bowl tonight, right?
-
I don't know what you guys are talking about. The CFB season ends after the Rose Bowl tonight, right?
as far as tv ratings are concerned, it sure will.
this rematch might be the lowest rated final ever.
-
The other CG had decent ratings with UGA
-
Had UGA and UM taken different routes and landed in the Finals there would be more interest
-
Isn't there an SEC board on this site?
Just a board,gimme a board
-

That's her M.O.
-
I pulled the trigger on seats today. After plummeting since halftime of the Orange Bowl through early today, I suspect tickets will begin to rise during the week, before coming back down again late weekend. I'd bet walk in the door price will be under whatever the stated face value is for the upper level. Not sure market will get as soft as Bama v Clemson at Santa Clara when nobody wanted to go. Very challenging to actually get the breakdown of 'face' for this game. Definitely a tiered range, about $475 to about $1000, based on what I know was face for LSU/Clem
-
I'd wait until 30 minutes before kick
and be willing to walk to the nearest bar to watch if I didn't get a decent price

BCS and College Football Playoff Ratings History - Sports Media Watch (https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/college-football-playoff-ratings-bcs/)
The first UGA-BAMA NC game had the second highest ratings of any CFP championship game, behind only OSU-Oregon, the first one.
-
That wasn't a rematch.
Is Metchie going to play in this game or not?
-
Metchie had an ACL tear, he's out.
-
Based on the SECCG, that's a substantial boon for UGA.
-
Any WR is going to have a great game if you don't bother trying to cover him.
-
Big Georgia fan edge on the streets of Indy. Same inside Lucas oil. Never seen fans pile in so early. 20 degree weather will do that.
-
I had totally forgotten about this until today.
-
I had totally forgotten about this until today.
College's football epic quest to make people lose all interest in its championship
-
Nice to warm up .
-
I had totally forgotten about this until today.
So did i - heard the local sports reporter mention it at the end of the broadcast.Figures the SEC finally comes North to play in BIG weather and it's inside and against each other
-
Oh, is that tonight?
Sorry, I've gotta wash my hair.
-
College football could absolutely just own one more Saturday of year and have a whole big thing. I know TV execs and being nice to the NFL and all that, but for the life of me I can't understand how college football just puts their biggest game of the year on a weeknight opposite Kenan and Bob (Hearts) Abishola.
-
I have been looking forward to it.
Yes- rematch and SEC and all that clatter. But it’s CFB and I love CFB, and these are the two best teams.
Should be a good one.
-

Same.
-
It still Blows they don't put it on Friday Nites
-
Monday Night Football is usually very good for me
-
Runza's and Bloody Mary's?
-
Iowa Pork chops and Bud Heavy
a Runza sounds good, too late for a Bloody
-
I don't want either team to win.
-
Same.
Yup. But I agree. Nothing is less college football than playing on Monday night in mid January in an NFL stadium.
Now that the NFL playoffs are a week later, why can't they do it on Saturday night?
-
I don't want either team to win.
Georgia has strong early 2000s Red Sox energy. When Boston tried to brand itself as the lovable underdog against the Yankees. When really they were just the unsuccessful version of the Yankees. I want a good game, but it's not like this is some true underdog against Alabama. It's just Alabama vs. less successful Alabama.
-
Why is there a mandatory bizarre computer-generated thing in every big game?
-
why can't they do it on Saturday night?
Yup there are folks that still have to work on tuesdays but the choads in suits think tough stay up .Why not a Fri/Sat and secure that - just a swampy morass of meh.
-
Ugh, that looked bad. Should have opted out
-
No!! Not Jamo. Looks like an ACL
-

Friday doesn't work for a nation wide broadcast. Because you have to put it on at 9 ET. Saturday IS college football, and now that there is no NFL playoffs this weekend anymore, it seems doable
-
He's walking pretty normally.....hope he can come back. Want both teams at as full strength as possible.

Oh I love it. But they've already exceeded the total number of legitimate points scored in that game, before halftime.

This game. Well, it exists.

Uga fans w a big edge in stands. Bennet needs to make a play. Or get a to. Bama Wr core disarray.
-
The NFL puts all sorts of spectacle around its Super Bowl to make it entertaining even if the game blows. College just take the money and goes to bed at halftime.

Katy Perry and her Broken Mirror robot dog don't do it for ya?

Justin Guarini back pitching Dr. Pepper and reminding you you weren't actually that sick of Fansville ads

What do the upper decks look like? It's all dark on TV.
-
Bennett has been shaky all night. He just got called for grounding when he wasn’t under pressure.
Big turnover for UGA.
-
Katy Perry and her Broken Mirror robot dog don't do it for ya?
We would have been better served with Katy Perry just talking about college football
-
Katy Perry would have been a good get 10 or 15 years ago.

I'd still sweep her chimney.

Dirty old 'Fro.
-
What a goofy play
-
I just got through texting my buddy that Bennett is going to make a critical mistake. He has been living dangerously all night. Extremely loose with the ball all night.
-
I don't see how that call is correct on any level
-
Katy Perry would have been a good get 10 or 15 years ago.
She did a live Super Bowl halftime, what, like 6 years ago? Now she's doing a pretaped music video for college football?
-
Bryce Young might be the weakest Heisman winner since Jason White, but that's a Heisman throw
-
And for all the crap refs get I thought those were both great calls in real time. I thought the ball was coming out of Bennett’s hand and then the recovery in bounds. Great officiating.

Great response by Bennett. He has been bad tonight but that was a nice drive.
-
Ud is full, yes dark. Mostly uga. 70% uga in here.

I'm not sure Alabama has enough offense without their best two receivers
-
Tension I haven't felt in a stadium since the '95 OB. Uga fans really on edge here.

Ohio State's WRs stepped up in the Rose
not going to shed a tear for Bammer

I'm a INDY homer no doubt, but this is a bomb of a site, certainly better than LA next year

I think Alabama could beat Utah

I'm guessing the numbers would have said to take the penalty on the extra point and go for the game ending two point conversion

Uga fans stunned. Can't believe it is real.

The Dawgs are barking

Bama really missed their receivers tonight. They left some plays on the field.

Cinci is pouring some bubbly somewhere - good on him

Huh?
What more should he have done?

Their main dude - the only 1 of their big 3 to play, had 350 yards. You're joking, right?

I don't bet. I was explaining why UGA was favored. There are reasons.

Congrats Georgia - long time a’coming!

Feels like Saban genuinely respects Kirby more than any other former assistant, other than perhaps, oddly, Bobby Williams

Uga fans stunned. Can't believe it is real.
I remember that feeling in Miami for Osborne's first

According to Mdot guess this makes UM no2 :06:

Well, I don’t feel sorry for them or anything but if they got housed like Ohio St did I wouldn’t be bringing it up. In a close game where I saw Bama receivers not making plays that were there I thought it was worth a mention.
-
so, firing Mark Richt worked out

This is gross.

yup, no one likes the SEC

When your interior line is gutted and chance at chip shots also, well kinda of wears things down

We ran out of Food Network shows to watch, and the 4th quarter was a bigger draw than House Hunters episodes on demand. So I did actually watch some of the game.
Disinterestedly, as I didn't give a rat's ass which SEC team would end up winning.

Woof

Saban sounded a little different after this one. I don't think he retires, but if he does, I wouldn't be totally shocked

I gotta say I don’t understand this mindset. I don’t give a rat’s ass who wins any sporting event I watch that doesn’t involve WVU, but I like watching good teams play when something is on the line.
-
That was not my preferred outcome. But I have like two UGA fan friends, and one is very happy.

That was worth the price I paid for the ticket. Helps to be able to drove home in less than 30min to my own bed.

So... best out of three then?
This game proved nothing.

It proved as much as any other championship game. As CFB fans we aren’t used to rematches but with all the CCG and expanded playoffs we better get used to them.

Have to be a round robin with LSU

Well, the best team won in Atlanta, and now the best team won in Indy. So the best team won twice, but it was not the same team.
All that matters is when you win???

And that’s how it is in every other sport. Georgetown beat Villanova twice in 1985 but got beat in the title game. Same with Oklahoma and Kansas in 1988. There obviously are a ton of examples of rematches in the NFL, but we readily accept those teams as champions.
I’ve always enjoyed the unique way CFB picked a champion but everyone else kept clamoring for playoffs so here we are. When you win does matter now.

It's mostly SEC fatigue, added to the fact that having your national championship on a Monday night a week and a half after New Year's (the traditional end of CFB) doesn't really draw me all that much.
I'd have tuned in from the start if either Cincinnati or Michigan had made it, because there's at least some novelty there. But watching a Georgia team that got their teeth kicked in 6 weeks ago play the same team that did them a solid curbie, just didn't get me excited.
-
Betcha Tuscaloosa could be seen from the international space station last nite

I was actually kind of intrigued by the storyline. UGA has been on the verge of getting over the hump for several years now and Bama, more than any other team, has stood in their way. I wanted to see if they could finally kick the door down. Glad they did.
I probably would have been less intrigued by Bama-Clemson again.
-
Fans often are less interested in a contest with teams not in their region.
I think betting is a large part in why the NFL and NBA stay fairly popular.
-
I had a lot of juice for it around New Years, but the delay, and the Monday night, just makes the game feel like nothing. I feel this way every year, and my team has been in it a couple times.
-
It's not that it's region it's repetition,Advertisers prolly weren't happy with ESPiN,at least over the air there would have been more eyeballs.Who wants to pay to see that shit - not the masses
-
I see ratings for the semis were off by a fair bit.
-

For the NFL, fantasy football is a HUGE part of it... Granted in some sense that may also be called betting, as most play in leagues where there are prizes at the least, and more often cash winnings.
Without fantasy football, the NFL would end up with a giant drop in popularity.
-
I dunno, those guys were already fans watching when they became hooked to FF and would prolly keep watching regardless
-
Saban's record when I'm in the stadium is 2-3.

Fantasy football is much bigger than just traditional football fans. The number of people playing in fairly casual (family/friends/coworkers) leagues who may only be watching games because they're playing fantasy football is probably larger than you'd expect.
-
Saban's record when I'm in the stadium is 2-3.
1-2 here

Yes perhaps CFB will consider ABC (or OTA Networks) instead, ratings still would have been down but OTA fans still might have dialed in - at least for the 2nd half.

I'm not sure how much it would change.
The Venn Diagram of people who simultaneously care enough about college football that they'd tune in for the final, but NOT enough about college football that they can't justify a cable/streaming plan that has ESPN, has little overlap IMHO.
-
I know quite a few people dropped cable because of the companies unchecked greed even some of the streaming services have spiked. They how ever told me they would have watched the game, some pubbed it.Advertisers aren't hamstrung by cable - they'll follow the viewing eyeballs

Totally understand and agree. Those people definitely exist.
I got rid of traditional cable/satellite (forgot which I was on at the time) as soon as SlingTV came out and had ESPN, because it was $20/month. I made the deliberate choice that I'd get ENOUGH of the college football and basketball content I needed, and chose to forgo BTN at the time. I'd be in a similar group to what you describe in that I'd be likely to watch BTN content IF it were available on ESPN or OTA, but it wasn't important enough to justify a $100+ cable/satellite subscription 12 months out of the year for a few games.
Likewise there are people who have decided that sports, if they're not OTA, aren't important enough to justify a cable/satellite or live TV streaming service. Especially when you look at Hulu Live TV which was initially $39.99/mo when I joined, and is now $69.99/mo (now includes Disney+ and ESPN+ BTW, which it didn't then, but you now cannot get a plan w/o those). Prices keep going up...
I'm just saying it's a sliding scale. Die hard college football fans find it hard to ditch ESPN...
ESPN is just way too much of the available content, especially for fans of non-helmet teams that don't regularly get featured on Big Nude Saturday or the primetime ABC game. 9 of OSU's 12 games were on Fox or ABC, with only three on FS1 or BTN, and those were the Tulsa, Akron, and Rutgers games that weren't expected to be competitive anyway. Purdue had 4 of 12 games OTA, @ND (on NBC) and then games against top-10 Iowa, MSU, and OSU on ABC. Of the remainder, only one was even on an ESPN network, and that was ESPN2. Purdue had 4 on BTN, two on FS1, and one on CBSSN. For a Purdue fan, the only games OTA were the ones we were predicted to lose by significant margins.
So respectfully, if you're mainly talking to OSU fans, things are a little different for y'all. You can forgo cable/streaming in favor of OTA because your team is regularly featured on OTA networks. For the rest of us... Not so much.
-

FWIW, I'm in both circles. Although part of that may be explained by this:
Totally understand and agree. Those people definitely exist.

I may go back to some form of Cable/Satellite but it is actually more about Basketball for me than Football. There are two main considerations:
First, when I initially cut the cord I was single and childless. It would have cost me something like $100/mo to get a cable package with BTN and I figured I'd rather spend that money on a few trips a month to the bar when Ohio State Basketball was on ESPN or BTN. Now I am married with two kids (plus another on the way) so even in a non-COVID world trips to the bar to watch a weeknight basketball game are not going to happen.
Second, for football you covered it pretty well from my perspective. There are only a few games a year not OTA for me and for those few I can either skip it (because my team is generally favored by 20+ in these games) or go somewhere. it is only once a week and on a weekend so watching with my brother or FIL is reasonable.
Basketball is the much bigger problem for me. Just this week:
- Ohio State is at Wisconsin on Thursday at 7pm, on ESPN2
- Ohio State hosts Penn State on Sunday at noon on BTN
In my single/childless days I'd have had dinner Thursday night at a local bar to catch the Wisconsin game and had lunch Sunday at a local bar to catch the Penn State game. Now . . . I'm going to try to get the ESPN ap through my in-laws Satellite subscription to work to get the Wisconsin game on my tablet but that may or may not work and Sunday I'm not sure. I'll try to schedule a visit to the in-laws house to catch that one.
-
The other thing is Disney isn't just worried about eyeballs on the game, they are looking across the spectrum.
So if the game is on ABC, what is on ESPN? Yet another alternate broadcast of the game? Bowling? Almost every sports fan is just going to watch ABC, nobody is going to watch ESPN, and people who don't care about sports are going to find something else to do.
I initially turned it to ABC, before remembering, and The Bachelor was on. So now you can also retain the people who don't care about sports, rather than just punting ESPN for those very few people who care, but not enough to have a cable/streaming package that includes ESPN
-
Yes, the keys here are incremental viewers and, since Disney controls what is effectively a portfolio, total viewers.
So the title game pulled in 22.6M viewers and The Bachelor drew 3.1M.
If the title game had been on ABC, would it have gotten 25.7M viewers or more?
More refined analysis, would the title game on ABC in addition to something random on ESPN, have drawn 25.7M viewers or more?
That's the question to ask, when trying to gauge whether or not the decision to put the title game on ESPN rather than a national broadcast OTA channel, was the correct one.

I'm just saying it's a sliding scale. Die hard college football fans find it hard to ditch ESPN...
So respectfully, if you're mainly talking to OSU fans, things are a little different for y'all. You can forgo cable/streaming in favor of OTA because your team is regularly featured on OTA networks. For the rest of us... Not so much.
Good Post,I'm die hard but when the cable bill is getting bumped up into the sphere of essentials -groceries,utilities and such they get this

My mind set is to break or make reasonable - if everyone dropped them even for a month or two, guess what they'd realize? Just can't justify even though i can afford.Much better places to put coin than into those C*********'s coffers
