Title: How good is UGA?
Post by: Cincydawg on November 03, 2021, 12:27:26 PM
The Clemson win doesn't look nearly as good now.  Their best wins are over Auburn and UK, they handled Florida because of some miscues making the score look gaudy.  Since game one, they have had comfortable leads at the half in nearly every game.

Have they been tested yet?  Is Bennett the answer at QB against an Alabama level D?  Stay tuned, they are 39 point favs over Mizzou, which seems outrageous to me, and will get a test in Knoxville the week after.  If they can beat UT they probably will get to 12-0.

I think UGA might have a generational defense and a pedestrian offense.  I have no idea how that will play against the great offenses.  I hope Daniels gets to play and makes them better.  The receivers are finally getting healthier so perhaps that will help as well. I love this d though, they seem united and have great morale, like you don't get to score, son. They are fun to watch. I remain worried and hopeful.

Yup.  I do like how Bennet can scoot though.

This is how I see UGA right now.

On Tennessee:
Plus:  45 points vs UK having the ball for under 14 minutes
Minus:  only had the ball under 14 minutes and thus the defense allowed 600+ yards
.
The '85 Bears' defense would suck if they were on the field 3/4 of every game.  Those poor Vols defenders are going to fall flat on their faces.

They are mostly to blame themselves.

Not sure they've ever heard of, or even considered, getting a 3rd down stop.

Someone should tell them .....that's how you get a breather.

I agree with the assessment of the D.  They are the truth.

But let's talk about this UK/UT game and what really happened that made UTs D so terrible.

It was a horribly called game.  UK was holding in a big way almost every single play.  They were called one time.  I'm taking three and four holds as the runner gashed the DLine.  UK should have been three and out at least a half a dozen times, and shut down after one first several more.  It was that bad.  It was as bad as I've ever seen it.

And just about the time I'm certain the office has dialed that one up and especially after a PI call extending a drive that was a split second of handsies where both players were guilty on UKs final drive- and literally a split second- they missed what I think was a blatant face masking on levis... then toss the flag on stoops... and because of which OT was avoided at the minimum and a loss was avoided most likely.

Insofar as the Ds production, I'm damn proud of them to stay in the game 90+ plays and not completely collapse even with the early and often demoralizing no calls.  Gents, it was THAT bad... and before it was over, UK has the same legit complaints.  When UT gets some depth, they'll be a competitor with this system.

But this thread is about UGA not UT...

The thing about a D like UGA has is they force a team, often by halftime, to resort to high risk plays, and as soon as they do?  They're there to exploit the risks and make those wins flow.  I'm guessing UT will be no different.  Early, UT may present an issue and there is a real chance they not only take the lead but also force some t/o's,  but, it won't last.  It'll last maybe a quarter.  The OLine is nowhere deep enough to hold out that UGA DLine.  Though Hooker is a good QB with a bit of scramble ability, he is no magician like Nix can be, nor is he a lightning bolt of titanium at the core- he's breakable and has been injured a couple times this season already.  I'll be surprised if he makes it to halftime and if he does it's because UTs tempo causes them less than 10 minute ToP and a stack of 3/out.

UGA can hang 31-55 on them.
UT is capable of 14-28...

My line would be UGA -14.5.  o/u at 66 or so... it'll be over by halftime most likely but it'll be an exciting half of football.

My thing about Tennessee is not the one game of 15 minutes of possession time, but that defense being out there for 90+ plays week after week isn't going to work.

One of the UGA radio talking heads said Kirby is playing a prevent offense, slowing down the game and not taking chances and that Daniels is getting ready to show how explosive the offense can be when the receivers get healthier and UGA needs them.  I don't know about all that but I love the term prevent offense.`

In the sense that moral victories have any merit, which they don't, but if they did a moral victory here would be UT hanging 35 on that UGA D.

I dont see that happening and I don't see UGA scoring less than 42, so... it'll have to be a moral victory.

The line right now sits at UGA by 20.5, with o/u at 55.  That is a 45-10 / 35-17 affair?  The collection of betters get it eerily right more times than not... and... that sounds about right to me on one hand- on the other I hope UT shocks UGA early and piles 14-21 in the first half.

One thing I can gather from this game with some level of certainty- whatever UT does it will be done in the first half.... after adjustments they will be locked up.

I think it will be close, maybe something like 41-31 ish.

I'd take that right now as a fan.

Talent usually wins over schemes, UGA has better players and I trust Kirby and Monken to exploit that.  UGA 38 UT 10.

I loved UT playing to get back in it instead of laying down.

Half right, almost.  I thought the Vols would score more, and they did leave some points on the field.

UGA has played no top 20 teams, if the rankings are as expected.

UT could have had at least 6 more but went for it on 4th... they were playing to get back in the game.  I like that.  Ol flat footed Joe the mile slinger relieving hooker late and connecting with that 52yd pass to Tillman and then producing exactly nothing afterward was typical of what UT would have been like this season had Hooker not taken over.  Guy has an arm but nothing between his ears and a big ol spaz button every defense he's faced has homed in on and smashed.

UT lost 14 key players to the portal last season when tater head got fired.  JG isn't counted among the 14 as "key", but left to wazu... he's been stinking it up out there too.  For what remained UT has done extremely well this season and I'm mighty proud of them.  They're at least two years out from getting any appreciable depth unless the portal is kind to them (and it might be with LSU and PSU, perhaps that other UT and maybe UF going up for parts soon).

I like this trajectory.
