Title: WLOCP and World Series
Post by: EastAthens on October 29, 2021, 05:04:51 PM
Braves Nation is enormous, going from Tobacco Road to Music City to the Mississippi Delta to Northern Florida  Cheering with UNC fans, Bama fans, FSU fans, Clemson fans, UT fans, Auburn fans and of course UGA and Tech and all the rest is really fun.  The city feels different during a World Series and I like it.
GO BRAVES!

Dawgs 31-10 in Jax.

They sounded loud last night on TV, it was hoppin'.  I hope you're right about the UGA game obviously, I'm very worried.

History and all that, I'd be delighted with 26-20.

I did not think the Braves could go nearly this far, and now Morton is out, though I hear he can pitch with a broken leg pretty well.

Florida did show some chinks in the Dawg defense armor.  They moved the ball pretty well overall and played well on defense, UGA couldn't finish in  the red zone as well as they could have.  The first drive was disappointing indeed (missed FG after grounding penalty).

I remain curious about the QB situation there.  Mizzou is next and they could probably win with me playing QB, but Tenn is showing some life.

The dawgs look overrated to me. The d is great but we need Daniels back.  Those were terrible interceptions yesterday.  Alabama, OSU and OU will score a bare minimum of 28 on us and UGA does not look capable of that with Bennett.  Those guys won't gift us like the Gators did.

My top 4:
1  OU
2. OSU
3. Ala
4. UGA

And go Braves!

I'm unimpressed with Oklahoma even now, though they are better than they were, as is Ohio State.  It won't take much to start Daniels, if he really would make a significant difference.  I think UGA can beat most teams without him, but we may well need him against elite teams, and I suspect we'll see him.

Mizzou should be a comfortable win.  I'd probably start Daniels and give him a lot of reps this week.

I'm still meh on Ohio State.  Disclaimer:  I've only watched their Oregon game and last night's PSU game.  Maybe that's not enough, but PSU was really able to frustrate them on defense, and that would only get worse against UGA.  I'm not convinced that OSU is a great enough offense to hit 28 or make the Dawg D sweat.  They are a good offense.  I don't see the same level of unstoppable that could put 28-35 on a D like that, though.

I don't have OSU ahead of UGA in a power ranking.

As usual, I could be wrong.

*************************************************************************************

....watching UGA play defense just makes me sad.  I love great defense but it mostly serves to remind me that my favorite team used to be perennially great on defense.

...although UGA's defense reminds me more of Alabama's great units, stylistically, than LSU's.

I think this UGA D is more parallel to Bama's great units, perhaps there is some similarity in coaching there.

And five stars.  Jordan Davis in the middle makes a difference and there is a lot of speed at LB.

Stars don't move me much.  You either can play at an elite level or you can't.

Stars matter as a collective, not in any one specific player.  But they matter, which is why the best coaches work like hell to get the most stars they can.  It's part of being a great HC.

Sure, but 5 stars was the point under consideration.  It's obviously anecdotal, but an inordinate amount of LSU's 5 stars over the past, say, 15 years I followed recruiting wound up doing not much.  Seems easily more than half.  OTOH, most of the team's studs have come from the 3 and 4 star ranks, and I'll put them with any 5 star UGA or Alabama has had.  The NFL certainly does.

The correlation between 5 stars and who gets drafted on Day One is pretty high.

And teams who recruit well tend to populate the top ten year after year in college.

Kirby was asked about recruiting at the press conference after the game and what he said was pretty interesting. He said you cannot outcoach talent, that recruiting cost him time away from his family but it was that important and that it was 25% assessment, 50% talent and 25% coaching.

That's fine, but we do it with a bunch of 4 stars and quite a few 3's.

We've had our fair share of 5 stars, but the list is quite long in that small group of Tigers that didn't live up to it.

Right, but you're ignoring the TONS of 3* guys that don't do shit.....because you don't expect them to.  Career backups, SR fill-ins when no one else is that good to start, etc.

Quite a few 4s do very well in CFB obviously, it's a matter of a correlation between that and stars.  Some 2 star guys do well.  The UGA QB had zero stars.  He's "adequate" it seems, has some capabilities like with his feet that are useful and runs the offense.  Their five star guy has been on the bench, though I expect that to evolve.

Folks look at the outliers and ignore the trends.  Recruiting is sine qua non.

Off the top of my head, LSU probably signs less than 50% 3 star guys, though I would have to check that.  I imagine the 4 and 5 stars make up over 50% of the signatures.  So it's a smaller group to begin with and sure, some of them do little, but a fair number of them have been major contributors, if not outright stars.  The percentage may be higher of ones who don't do much than ones who play like they deserved more stars, but that just goes to my point that I don't care about stars.  You can either play at an elite level or you can't.

I don't know how it goes at most schools, but at LSU the number of 5 stars who wound up with 2 star careers is surprisingly long.  Not all of them of course.....you have your Patrick Petersons and Leonard Fournettes, but man, for every one of those there's at least one more that's like "Oh yeah....I forgot about him....we had high expectations and then never heard from him again."

The majority of the revolving door of LSU greats who go on to NFL careers has come from the 4 star ranks.  Guys that you would think would've been no-brainers for 5 stars, but weren't.

2021 College Football Team Talent Composite (247sports.com) (https://247sports.com/Season/2021-Football/CollegeTeamTalentComposite/)

This says LSU has 6 five stars on the roster this year and 43 fours and 26 threes.  So half threes is about right, this is cummulative.
