Well, certainly frostier up here. Finally, after an unseasonably warm week, it feels brisk. I'm sitting on my porch in a sweatshirt because it's 54 degrees, and the high is supposed to be 59 degrees. Man I've missed it. Not sure what I'm cooking today - I cooked a bunch yesterday - chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy along with brussel sprouts and sourdough.
The wife also wanted a fall cocktail, so I went to work on that. Found something called apple elixir on the internets, but basically reduced apple cider with cinnamon, allspice, and bl;ack pepper into a syrup. Then 1 part syrup, 2 parts apple brandy, 4 parts hard cider, plus a squeeze of lemon juice. Quite apple-y.

Yum. How do you “chicken fry a steak”. I had it at a restaurant and really liked it.

Buy some cube steaks, self rising flour, eggs, and buttermilk. Mix a couple eggs into 2 or 3 cups of buttermilk. Dry off steaks, then dredge in flour, then in buttermilk, then in flour. Let rest, then fry, and season with salt and pepper when they come out. After your done, pour off the grease, then pour back in about a quarter cup. Whisk in 3 tablespoons of flour. Then pour in 3 or 4 cups of milk and cook - season with salt and pepper or seasoned salt if you're feeling frisky. There's your gravy.

Thank you!

a lot of boring match ups on paper, which usually means that there will be an inordinate amount of upsets.
-
34 degrees outside, 63 degrees inside
haven't fired up the furnace yet this fall
high of 67 this afternoon so the house will warm up
Chicken fried steak sounds REALLY good this morning - Damn
with the chill, I'm putting a 4 & a half pound pork shoulder blade boston butt roast in the crockpot with some garlic, onion, taters and peppers.
will be ready after the Husker game and then a round of golf.
not many rounds of golf remaining this season - not many Husker games either
-
a VERY good day for Frosty to tip over the canoe!

My oldest daughter is going to her friend's quinceanera today. Are there expectations there? Can she just bring a card with a gift card or something? Not something I know anything about.

no help
got past that with two daughters w/o knowing anything

According to WIKI
A quinceañera (also fiesta de quinceañera, quince años, fiesta de quince años and quinces) is a celebration of a girl's 15th birthday. It has its cultural roots in Mexico (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico) and is widely celebrated by girls throughout Latin America (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_America). The girl celebrating her 15th birthday is a quinceañera (Spanish pronunciation: [kinseaˈɲeɾa] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Spanish); feminine form (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_(linguistics)) of "15-year-old"). In Spanish, and in Latin countries, the term quinceañera is reserved solely for the honoree; in English, primarily in the United States, the term is used to refer to the celebrations and honors surrounding the occasion.
Get her a gift card can't go wrong there.Like weddings they shouldn't be celebrated during football season no matter how cute they are

Picked up some (very expensive) beef short ribs to make today. Or maybe tomorrow. Might order out tonight. Not sure.

Love those- that was dinner last night.

It's the stress of getting up 1st to kick off this weekly SOC Thread.I use to get a few in so did BF & CD as I recall. But I ain't settin' the alarm clock on saturdays for the honor. But one more of these faux pas and I'll consider it :D.Thing is had you not spotted it might have squeeked by

My wife n kids fell asleep in the bed last night, leaving me a little sliver of mattress to eke out a few zZz's. My alarm is a kid's foot in my ribcage

Checking in from the East River Flats for yet another 11 AM start. Not much bucket tossing time today.
Beautiful day today. Cool start, but brilliant sunshine and a high of 60. Not so much here in the urban core, but frost on the pumpkins out in the MSP burbs.
No clue how this game is going to go.
-
what's on the griddle on the flats?
-
Picked up some (very expensive) beef short ribs to make today. Or maybe tomorrow. Might order out tonight. Not sure.
I saw our Costco had Wagyu beef short ribs yesterday. The most beautifully marbled beef short ribs I've ever seen. Cut into individual ribs at full length (~12" long). It was getting strangely dusty there in the Costco ;-)
Surprisingly only $12.99/lb.
-
This was last night's dinner. The asparagus at Costco was wimpy so my wife sauteed some shredded Brussels sprouts to go with the ribeye.
-
my pork roast was $1.47 per pound
it's in the crock
-
Someone brought some steaks for frying on the flattop. Breakfast tailgating is nice once, but not every game.
-
Today's going to be low-key. We're gonna go look at coffee tables and run a few errands, maybe get In & Out for lunch. Then the goal is to take the dog to The Dog Pawrk (a brewery), as long as it's not ridiculously hot.
We're doing a Zoom call with our good friends in NC and IN this evening, so we're just going to do Thai shrimp lettuce wraps for dinner. It's an easy quick meal to throw together, especially since I'll cook the shrimp this morning and then just chill them in the fridge until dinnertime. Gotta be flexible because the NC couple have two kids under 3, so they're kinda picking the schedule for the call lol.
Going to avoid the depressing football game if I can.

well, since over half the weight is bone... Only $30/lb for the rib meat
-
Bone is not half of the weight. We've been through this. ~???
-
I have to go to a wedding at 2. At least it doesn't interfere with the Florida game.
-
good day to do some Rose bush clean up. the IU tailgate is out, kids had a sleep over last night, and if you know anything about sleepovers, There's never been a successful sleep over in the history of mankind. (S+1 is a bust).
-
Heading to a wedding in Columbus, on the first real fall day of the season. Bah humbug
-
So many good games today. This is what my car must feel when bubbles are blown his way and he's too excited to pick which one to swat at.
Between my apartment and two different sports bars down the street I plan on catching stretches of the following games:
noon:
#12 OK State @ #25 Texas
Auburn @ #17 Arkansas
#20 Florida @ LSU (Org's job on the line?)
3:30PM:
#11 Kentucky @ #1 Georgia
4:30PM:
#13 Ole Miss @ Tennessee (high powered offense for first Neyland sellout in 4 years)
8:30PM:
UCLA @ Washington
10PM:
#18 Arizona State @ Utah (for control of the PAC 12)
-
Fro's getting married?
-
Ugh. Friends tell us they want the zoom at 4 PM PT. No, that doesn't screw up any of our plans for the day at all :96:
-
Fro's getting married?
Fro wouldn't schedule a wedding on a college football Saturday.

Just saw that Florida at LSU is an 11am game.
An 11 AM start at LSU is a crime against humanity.
-
it's just a misdemeanor on the East River Flats
-
Iirc LSU refuses to wear whites when they start early. At least there seems to be some history of that.
-
should simply refuse to kickoff at that time
stick it to the Man!!!

Man there's like 5 games at noon I want to watch

Northwestern and Minnesota are both up 7-0

Indiana came to play today. Always tough to play a desperate team on the road.
-
welp, that's ball game. Hell of a play by MSU LB on that pick 6.

Looks like the bad A Martinez today.
-
Scott Frost better start filling out his unemployment paperwork. Nebraska is making the Bad News Bears look like Super Bowl champs.
-
so far
tough duty with that O-line
-
Apparently clean, form tackles are now roughing the passer. 🙁
-
did he drive him into the ground with all his weight?
-
Nebraska OL looked good on that series
-
a few blocks help the offense
-
WHY IS FLORIDA PASSING EVERY DOWN?!?!
E Jones just tossed his third INT. LSU is missing 3 starting DL, they were run on for over 300 yds by Kentucky last week, and Florida’s ground game is dependable.
LSU ready to go up by two scores.
RUN THE BALL GATORS!!!
-
Ref was so busy throwing the flag he nearly missed that sick TD catch by CAB.
-
Just got back from the gym, showered, etc... What's the best game on the tube right now?
-
With my friends now shooting for 4 PM PT, that opens up our dinner options.
My wife bought me the Meat Illustrated cookbook to go along with the Vegetables Illustrated that I already owned. So picked through that, and since she goes to the grocery store on Sat mornings, we've pivoted.
Tonight will be Pepper-Crusted Pork Tenderloin with Asparagus and Balsamic Pan Sauce.
-
did he drive him into the ground with all his weight?
Not even a little
-
bullshit, then
bad call
-
Looks like the bad A Martinez today.
understatement
-
some bad luck there, williams with the pick, if he comes down normally, there's some yardage in the INT return
-
That was the worst interception I've ever seen thrown at any level of football. Hopefully Bad Tanner is done.
Short fields are the only way Nebraska was going to get back into this game, and there they go.
-
My wife n kids fell asleep in the bed last night, leaving me a little sliver of mattress to eke out a few zZz's. My alarm is a kid's foot in my ribcage

Adrian might wake up with short fields
-
Gophers managed to get out of that 3Q
-
That was nuts omg. Maybe Sparty should move Hunt to QB and Thorne to WR. LOL. Best catch of the day by the QB and best throw of the day by the TE.
-
Sparty breaks through
-
War Eagle 28 Pigs23
LSU 35 FLA28
-
Finally a long field for Nebraska
-
Bruce Feldman says LSU is targeting Mark Stoops, Lane Kiffin, and Mel Tucker to be their next head coach. Higher ups on the inside at LSU are really high on Mel Tucker apparently according to Feldman.
-
Now let's take 7 minutes off the clock on this drive.
-
3 and out!!!
-
Indiana not quitting. Fighting back hard. But I don't think that was a TD.
-
Trying to understand definitions...
What's going on in Baton Rouge... That's Twelving, right?
-
right
-
Yes good game. MSU offensive coordinator figured out how to call plays to take advantage of IUs total focus on stopping walker.
-
Adrian does it AGAIN!!!!
-
that was a pretty bad 2 pt call.
-
If day it
Adrian does it AGAIN!!!!
I'd say it worked out

well F it, let's go golfing, Dude
Corngrats to the Gophers

Pokes taking down the Horns
-
this MSU-IU game is insane. Neither team wants to win it seems like. MSU could've put the nail in the coffin with a FG, and Thorne throws a pick in the endzone.
-
NU does the B1G West a solid, taking down Rutger (lost their S today).
-

Come on I’ll give Michigan State some credit. They did the same thing Michigan did last week, went on the road to play a desperate team that was punching above its weight and found a way to win.
-
They just said that Purdue has more wins as an unranked team over a top 2 team than any other team in history.
Spoilermakers, indeed.

Interception!
And not by Iowa!

Of course both these teams have scoreboard on tOSU so maybe Meteor Strike

Looks like Purdue is solving the QB problem by playing all 3 QBs. Bold strategy, but I like it!

The Gators are Twelving! This is so embarrassing. LSU has 200+ yards running a simple counter play. Over and over.
WHERE were the obvious defensive adjustments?!?!
It’s almost as though the Counter play, when called by LSU, disappeared Florida’s LBs like vaporized genies. For an LSU OL that’s direly lacking experience, somehow they picked up every downfield assignment. But I guess if you’re OC is calling the EXACT SAME RUN every snap the learning curve won’t be that steep.
This is a real stain on Mullen and staff to not implement any defensive adjustments against LSU’s very one-dimensional approach.
Meanwhile, take Harsin and his staff at Auburn. In response to getting run out of their home stadium by Georgia last Saturday, they clearly circled the horses and decided on a game plan that set Nix up to succeed. They go into a ranked opponent’s stadium and call a determined game plan and manage the clock to their advantage. That’s how coaching is supposed to work.
-

No relation.

-
PSU bailed out Iowa so......,TD Spoilers, that may be a bridge too far for Fernetz or could get called back
-
Oh boy. That's either 4th and goal from the 1 inch line or a touchback.
-
Uh...fumble
-
not sure that's a TD- not sure there's enough to overturn it though. close call.
-
I think by rule it's a touchback
-
HUGE break for Iowa. WOW.
-
WOW,
what a BS rule lucky break
-
Kirk Ferentz must have a voodoo doll and pray to Satan. I've never seen one program pull so much pure luck out of their asses than his Iowa teams.

Karlaftis is a BEAST. He was SO close to coming to Michigan. MY GOD him and Aidan Hutchinson together would be illegal.

Well Brohm's boys going to get it back

Kirk Ferentz must have a voodoo doll and pray to Satan. I've never seen one program pull so much pure luck out of their asses than his Iowa teams.
Naw he'll always choke with enough leash

Purdue scores here this game is over. 17 points in less than a QTR to play just too big of a gap for a team like Iowa with no offense to come back from.
-
YUP,can only go to the wishing well so much
-
Going back to the touchback, what a bullshit rule. That obviously needs changed. A fucking turnover in that situation is ridiculous. Offense should get the ball back at previous LOS, at the very least

yup. I was pissed when he didn't come to Michigan. They were the leader early. Then looked like Ohio State- and thank god he picked Purdue instead of Ohio State. Can you imagine Ohio State with ANOTHER elite WR? Jesus.
-
Well that was stupid

nothing to review- he CLEARLY did not get that.

Boo Birds are going down

3rd and inches and you're in the shotgun 8 yards off the LOS. Get your ass under center!

Not for me....we don't know how to blow them out. After last year and this one, forget it. They could be 0-7 and we'd be #1 and it'd be a one-possession game.

How surprising was it to watch Sark and Kwiatkowski play two high safeties in the Longhorns secondary while down one score late in the 4th needing to stop the Cowboy's ground game?
Washington Huskies fans didn't take kindly to Sark nabbing away Kwiatkowski from Seattle, but maybe they're OK with it now.

Having a Folsom Field incident here at Rocky Top following a very questionable 4th down spot which was lousy and against Tennessee.
Kiffin about nailed with a golf ball.

Stay, classy, Vols.
Tennessee gains 23 yards on 4th and 24 with a minute to go, down 5 to Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin.
Fans start throwing shit out onto the field, hitting players, coaches and their own cheerleaders.
Delay going on 17+ minutes now.
Take your loss, UTK. You should be used to them by now.

Wow......Milton in bc Hooker got hurt. Film at 11.
On the last play of the game, he meekly scrambles and runs out of bounds.......HILARIOUS

He did put a good ball out there the previous snap but that was quite a sad quiet fart to end a 4 and a half plus hour game. 175 snaps or so.

ESPN is reporting Ed O is finished at LSU after the season. Aranda would win at LSU imo.

thought they might. Utes are tough at home- especially at night.

Milton absolutely sucks at playing football. Kind of a HUGE indictment on Jim Harbaugh that he was so all-in on this kid and made him his personal pet project.
-
Coach O apparently out at LSU, and lots of Mel Tucker smoke
-
And to think this wouldn’t be the first time LSU looked the way of East Lansing for a new coach. 22 years ago.
-
Coach O apparently out at LSU, and lots of Mel Tucker smoke
Yup, believe I said that in here a few pages ago. Bruce Feldman was on the Fox Gameday rip-off show yesterday saying that LSU was targeting three guys- and that the one guy that people inside of LSU were really high on was Mel Tucker.
Will he leave before he even really gets started at MSU? Hard to say, but no doubt that LSU is a better job from access to talent standpoint. Just way more top level in-state HS recruiting talent in Louisiana than there is in Michigan and there is no other bigger brand in-state to have to fight those recruits over.
People can bring up having to face Alabama in the SEC West division all the way want- which is true that's always going to be tough as long as Saban is there- but it's not exactly like the B1G East is a walk in the park with Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan as well.
-
Don't forget about Texas and OU now, too. If you go to coach LSU, you WANT to have a sexy schedule, not an easy one.
LSU could have OU, Texas, Alabama, Auburn, and Florida ANNUALLY (depending what happens, cross-division).
-
I think it depends on what he wants. If he wants to stay in college, I wouldn't blame him for going to LSU. I think he winds up in the NFL in a couple years, and I don't think jumping to LSU helps him there.
Gun to my head, I'd say he's at MSU for another two years, then takes an NFL job
-
If you go to coach LSU, you WANT to have a sexy schedule, not an easy one.
Many heads across the B1G West just exploded.
They will complain about a difficult crossover schedule, even though they are in one of the easiest divisions to dominate in all of P5.

Yes. Man doesn't have a great track record of sticking around just to stick around.
Plus, he's done relatively little thus far in his head coaching career, so if someone backs up the money truck to you, you probably take it and go to a job with a higher ceiling.
-
Don't forget about Texas and OU now, too. If you go to coach LSU, you WANT to have a sexy schedule, not an easy one.
LSU could have OU, Texas, Alabama, Auburn, and Florida ANNUALLY (depending what happens, cross-division).
All of this makes this places even more of revolving door cash machines for coaches. It's a great deal for them.

I'm sure the linemen are going to be REAL motivated now Bert

I can't imagine being a coach and saying that
-
Correct, they're not professionals the tongue that he wagged in Fayetville is popping out of that piehole again
-
I don't have an issue with this approach by Bret. ILL is not a good team. The challenge has been laid out. Nobody's job is safe. Either elevate your play or you are gone. This is what new coaches do when they take over a program that sucks. Some players buy in while other players leave. If any of the players have a problem with it, then they can leave.

I'm here for honest coaches.
I also assume he's telling his kids to shape the eff up

I mean...think about what he's saying now. He's not saying they haven't put in the work or whatever - he's saying the roster sucks, and no coach could win with these guys he has on the team. Which hey, may be true, I don't know. But it certainly is a nihilistic way to frame your job to the rest of the country.

“I don’t believe we have a player in the two-deep that they’ve recruited here over the last three years that is really significantly doing anything for us in the playing department,”
I read that as "please step up in the playing department" as much as, "Lord I was left with some humps." Like those kids, if they're not untalented enough, should be able to earn that time. Lord knows, the rest of the roster isn't doing much of that.
-
Fat Bret ate his lineman's motivation.
-
Not a good look.
-
IMHO,if Bert was so concerned about a solid roster he would have never bolted Madison for his 30 pieces of silver. I read it like Sam,again these guys aren't getting paid.Get more flies with honey.........I would have said we're gonna let her rip, have fun and see where that takes us.The team was getting pounded on the field they didn't need to hear it from their so called leader.
-
I just read it like "hey man, us sucking isn't my fault"
-
he should have said this before the season started so these kids could have jumped in the portal
saying it in the press 7 weeks in is BS
-
It is a curious tactic.
Apples and oranges a bit I can't imagine how this would have gone had I made these statements about my 3rd and 4th grade vball team this season. No height, some total weaklings. You find a way, to seek out inefficiency and arbitrage opportunities. You can't blast your toolbox like this.
-
not finding an Illinois depth chart, I know Bert didn't put one out before the Husker game week zero
but, it was a topic of discussion how many upperclassmen were in the lineup - a bunch of 5th and 6th year guys
not sure how the starters have evolved with the losing, but throwing the older guys under the bus after they decided to stick around after the coaching change is crap
-
Guessing as many as 40 players hit the portal.
